This OAV (original animation video) adventure brings back all the characters from the sprawling broadcast series--even ones who were killed. When Miaka, Tomahome (who now lives in the real world), Keisuke, and Tetsuya go visit the grave of Takikio, the one-time priestess of Genbu, Tomahome mysteriously vanishes back into Universe of the Four Gods. Miaka and Yui join him there, causing the Warriors of Suzaku and Seiryu to reassemble. Their reappearance has been arranged by Tenkuo, the former master of the evil Nagako, who hopes to rule the alternate world. Yui summons all four Gods to seal him away and prevent any further contact between the two worlds--which also means Miaka and Tomahome must separate. The secondary characters remain more entertaining than the whiny Miaka, especially sorcerer-in-training Chichiri and mountain bandit Tasuki. Viewers should watch the broadcast series before the OAVs, or they'll be hopelessly lost. Each episode is followed by an omake, or extra: a chapter of "Fûshigi Yûgi Rest and Relaxation Bus Trip: The Tale of the Forbidden Women's Hot Spring Resort," an offbeat farce that features the characters as themselves and as actors playing those roles. It provides a welcome break from the turgid melodrama of the main episodes, much the way Kyogen comedies are traditionally performed with Noh tragedies in the Japanese theater. Genki Yoshimura's script exhibits some chronological problems. When Tomahome arrived in Konan in episode 1, 50 years had passed since the battle at the end of the broadcast series, and Hotohori's grandson was emperor. When Tomahome and Miaka visit Konan in episode 5, only two years have elapsed and Hotohori's infant son occupies the throne. However, these inconsistencies are not likely to trouble fans of this mawkish magical-girl series. Much of the final episode, which is nearly twice as long as the others, is spent on a convoluted subplot involving Tomahome and Taka appearing in the same time and place when they're the same person. As a result, there's little time for the final battle. Perhaps it shouldn't feel too decisive: Miaka's final words to the remaining six Warriors of Suzaku, "I know we'll meet again," suggest that further sequels may already be in the works. Rated 16 and up for nudity, sexual situations, attempted rape, suggested incest, and violence. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great continuation to an awesome anime series!
I'm a huge fan of Fushigi Yuugi. If you are too, you should get this OVA boxed set!

The Fushigi Yuugi OVAs take place a bit after where the original series takes off. The first three episodes on this DVD are from OVA I, which is simply an anime-only filler to explain how Taka (Tamahome) made his way into Miaka's world. The next six episodes are from OVA II, which in my opinion, is great. It contains many new enemies and many new surprises.

My personal favorite episode on this DVD is the 8th episode (which is OVA II episode 5). It focuses on my favorite character, Chichiri. In it, you learn all about his past, and he winds up fighting someone very familiar to him...I won't spoil it, so if you want to know, buy the DVD!

This DVD is packed with action, adventure, fighting, and romance (No, I'm never going to get over that super cute Tasuki/Chichiri scene in OVA II eppy 5...heh heh heh...). If you're a fan of the series, you should get this DVD! You won't be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Confusing Beginning, Satisfying End (?)
Of all the anime series I have seen, Fushigi Yuugi is simply the best. The plot is great, and the series ended well, but the OAVs are definitely a good ending to the ... well... ending. For those who haven't seen the 52 episode series, you will be very confused, so you should probably see those first. (^.~)

I admit that the first three OAV episodes are REALLY confusing, and a lot of people may not like them at all (Sad to say, I was one of those people). The villain just came out of NOWHERE. I didn't get that. But don't be dispirited! The other six episodes make up for the first three, I assure you!

Also, a very wonderful part of the OAVs are the "in-betweeners." This are "mini-episodes" about the characters that give you a good laugh between episodes that don't give you much of one. So, basically, you still get comedy, even when the plot doesn't provide it! A very good thing it is, trust me.

As some of you may have guessed from earlier episodes, Tasuki develops a love for Miaka. ( ...interesting...) The seishi falls for the priestess, despite Miaka's love for Tamahome, who is now Taka. While Taka struggles with his two sides (Taka & Tamahome), Tasuki tries to win over Miaka ... but sorry, can't tell you what happens!

Also, Chichiri's old friend (you know, the one that stole his girlfriend ...;.;), Hikou, returns. The ninth episode leaves it open for another sequel (hopefully there will be one!), that's the reason for "End(?)."

Saying anything else would probably spoil the story, so I won't. My last statement to all you faithful Fushigi Yuugi fans is this: Don't be disappointed by the first three OAV episodes; ultimately, the OAVs are worth every cent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Correction on the Editorial
"Genki Yoshimura's script exhibits some chronological problems. However, these inconsistencies are not likely to trouble fans of this mawkish magical-girl series."

Actually, the Konan that Tamahome arrived in (50 years passed) was an illusion. So there is no such inconsistency. Maybe a bit hard to follow, but there was no such mistake made.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a disappointment
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Apparently, the people who made this OVA never heard that expression.

I adored the original Fushigi Yugi series and thought the ending was perfect, so this OVA needed something really special about it for me to put it in high regards, and I'm sorry to say that didn't happen. However, I should point out that apparently Charles Solomon failed to watch the entire series, as it is explained why the chronological idiosyncracies exist.

I actually gave up on watching the OVAs about four episodes in because I was so BORED by them and went to do something else for a while. I did come back later that day hoping for a payoff similar to the one given to fans who stick with the original series. It never came.

I didn't care about the villains, and the story focuses on Tamahome, who, as I've stated in other reviews, does not have a personality. You cannot build a story around a character who doesn't have a personality (not a good one, anyway, as this OVA proves).

The best things about the OVA are the little comedic pieces at the end of each episode, rewards, if you will, for those who actually manage to make it through an episode without giving up. The ones where the Suzaku Seven and the Seiryu Seven take charter buses to a hot spring have some side-splittingly hilarious moments. The pieces that parody scenes from the episode they follow contained some jokes I didn't understand, and I'd imagine most who doesn't live in Japan probably wouldn't get them either, but still provided a good laugh nonetheless.

Don't watch this OVA if you haven't watched all 52 Fushigi Yugi episodes. Besides the spoilers and the fact that you'll be hopelessly lost (heck, even people who saw the series will often find themselves scratching their heads in a state of "buh?"), it will give you a bad opinion of a great show.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fun For Anime Lovers!!
Begining of the Fushigi Yugi is easy to understand if your a true anime lover and is very exciting from the very begining to the end! To my opinion it is maybe one of the best animes anyone could hope to see. Full of comdey and action as well drama in a few scenes. But the best part is you will never now what happens nexts and it always suprises you. For anyone whos interest has my word for this is a 5 star anime you'll love forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What an extraordinary set of episodes
This set of 12 uncut Dragon Ball episodes really does aim to please. The General Blue Saga is one of the best sagas in Dragon Ball and there is a reason for this. It has incredibly fun to watch episodes detailing Goku, Bulma, and Krillin's adventures. They go into a pirates cave from long ago, search for treasure, and fight General Blue. There is even three episodes at the end of the saga which really stand out because they are when Goku comes to Penguin Village, Arale's town. Arale is a girl (robot really) from Akira's first successful manga, Dr. Slump. For people who have read the manga, this is a real treat.

Not to mention that getting 12 episodes for just over $30 dollars is an incredible deal. Don't pass up the oppurtunity to get this truly spectacular DVD set. The General Blue Saga is not one to be missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars First of the Second Third
In case you hadn't noticed, Funimation is releasing the second part of Dragon Ball last on DVD. First came the DVD's with Emperor Pilaf, the Tournament Saga, and the Red Ribbon Army, which made up the first (about) 1/3 of the series. Then came all those King Piccolo/Piccolo Jr. DVD's, which made up the last 1/3 of the series. Now comes the middle child of the Dragon Ball troika, starting with General Blue.
At the time the General Blue saga was originally being released, Funimation was still doing it on video. Round about the first Tien Shinhan tape, Funimation figured that DVD was the way to go and phased Dragon Ball VHS's off the market. For some reason, most of the General Blue episodes weren't released very widely on video, so most people (like me) didn't see them.
Which is a shame, because the General Blue episodes were some of the most fun of the series. An old pirate fortress full of traps and a killer robot. A squad of Red Ribbon soldiers who live to regret taking Master Roshi and Launch hostage. And Penguin Village, the whimsical setting of Akira Toriyama's first manga/anime series "Dr. Slump." As a coup de grace, "Dr. Slump's" central character, Arale, gets to headbutt nasty General Blue out of Goku's life forever.
Well, that's it for General Blue. Stay tuned for the Commander Red, Fortune Teller Baba, and Tien Shinhan Sagas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arjuna An Enviromentalist Anime
Arjuna is just one of those animes you really have to love unless you really hate enviromentalists and love pollution. <---lol I hope not too many people like pollution but anyways on to the review. Arjuna at 1st glance you can obviously tell its beautifully animated and the cg is great. What you don't get to see though is the excellent music done by none other than Yokko Kanno which for the anime beginners out there is the same person responsible for Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and Wolf's Rain (of course Arjuna!). Which also means the music is excellent it fits perfectly I found no flaws with the music at all. The storyline on the other hand is very complex and not for children who don't understand the complexities of everyday people who don't even notice everything they are doing to harm the Earth. This storyline is not for kids because there are some graphic images (whether you agree with me or not) of children starving to death, animals dieing, and other things I don't want to get into because it may ruin the story line. The other side to Arjuna though is the love story between Juna and Tokio her boyfriend. Its a very beautiful love story but with every love story there are challenges that they must go through that only strengthen the couple!

So I recommend this to everyone 16+ who cares about the enviroment and anyone who loves a good drama!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anime That Looks LIke a Moving Picture
Shoji Kawamori gets very personal in one of his most unique series yet. This anime legend created classics like "The Vision of Escaflowne" and "Macross", and teams up with Yoko Kanno again to create "Earth Maiden: Arjuna", a pioneer film to strike your senses at all levels. Taking place in the present day Tokyo, we watch an urban girl, Juna, as she wakes up to her surroundings and how much she is needed to act to protect the wellbeing of the planet she's taken for granted. When Juna realizes what it is she must do, she's endowed with the strength of the Earth to combat spiritual, snake-like destroyers born from human waste called the Raaja, but before she can even think of purifying the world she must first purify herself. Part environmentalist exposee, part romance, part coming-of-age story, Earth Maiden: Arjuna will dazzle your eyes, ears, mind, and spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Road Was Further Than I Thought"
Disaster strikes Japan - the Petrochemical Decomposing Bacteria (PDB) accidentally released by Juna and Tokio combines with the Raaja and proceeds to dissolve one of the underpinnings of modern civilization - plastics and similar products. The result is a complete loss of the country's support systems. Juna is stranded in New York City while her friends Tokio and Sayuri struggle for survival with no food, surrounded by the pollution released in the crisis.

Facing opposition from those who would prefer to see Japan quarantined and its people abandoned Jun rebels, and uses her powers to return to her home in full battle array. About to forcibly cleanse Japan, Juna finds herself facing an unexpected opponent. In the midst of her heroic effort she must confront a spiritual crisis that will change her forever.

Throughout this series there has been a tension between Shoji Kawamori's educational intentions and the flow of the story line. While the moments of ecological explanation are well done, they are a bit too pedantic for this watcher, perhaps because I have heard these lessons before. But the lessons are important, and the story line weaves these pieces together and provides a spiritual context as well. In these last two episodes, everything comes together and a compelling message is delivered perfectly.

This is a series that is perfect for its intended audience, those aged 13 and up. It depicts the typical problems of teenagers growing up in a flawed world with candor and honesty. It presumes that the watcher is comfortable with the minimal content present, which is completely innocuous when compared to what occurs in a typical TV advertisement.

Arjuna's message, to demonstrate the interconnectedness of all life is one that truly needs to be taught - repeatedly. This is a good family series that can provide the material for some excellent discussions. And I believe that most of us adults will benefit as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A quiet, beautiful series that should have been much longer.
Niea Under 7 is a series that seems to be trying to combine anime genres for laughs. You'll see elements of Maison Ikkoku, and Urusei Yatsura (LUM), two Rumiko Takahashi series, although she had nothing to do with this anime. I really think the alien element, was added initially as an audience hook. Much like in Kimagure Orange Road, where most of that story could have been told without some of the characters being ESP'ers. Niea could have just been a bratty friend, and not an annoying alien girl.

The series focus explores the life of a poor ronin girl, named Mayuko, seeking to make ends meet, and wondering how to approach the rest of the world, on a social level. I believe the presence of Niea, is a device to help get her, to come out of her shell. We see a character, much like a lot of young people who is diligent in school, honest, very hard working, with a misplaced sense of pride. Mayuko is also a character, who needs to be brought out of her shell. She's mistakenly seen by other students, as standoffish or arrogant, when she's really shy, and nervous in social situations.

The alien plot has some interesting dynamics to it. The aliens have been there for years, and have integrated into society. There are apparently levels of aliens, the lowest of which is the Under 7 type like Niea, who lacks an antenna, and appears to be dirt poor. I think the aliens are a convenient method to show cultural class struggles, similar to the poor, and the rich elite of our everyday society.

This series is probably too quiet for hard-core mecha lovers. It's slow moving, and many of the plots are inconclusive, and often depressing. I would have liked to see the development of Mayuko, played out till its conclusion. She's an interesting, but often a very sad character. Still as anime comedy plots go, some are very original, and quite funny.

Those looking for a definitive ending will be disappointed. The DVDs are well packaged, with some interesting extras, and insights into the Japanese culture. This was produced by the same people who did, Serial Experiments: LAIN, but it does not have as confusing a story. While it lacks the wild humor of LUM, or other similar series, it makes up for it in depth of emotion. The character development is such, that you can often feel yourself in the same position, (or at least in sympathy) of the characters in their situations. A good watch if you like story over action.

5-0 out of 5 stars ....
Niea_7 is a fun, smile inducing anime that avoids being childish, w/ great voice acting (even the Eng. Dub is decent compared to the average) and nice animation. For the most part it's episodic, without any central plot, it's more like a sunny day with a light breeze at the lake type of anime. I fail to see how anyone couldn't like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like eating chicken soup on a cold night...
Niea_7 is essentially about folks who aren't perfect, who arent rich, who are barely getting by, who somehow seem to be optimistic and push on through lifes problems, even accepting it when things don't turn out so well.

I've seen this series two times already within the three month's I've owned it. I've recently been going through some personal problems, and so I decided to pull Niea out again for a third time. I've watched one episode each night before going to bed, and it's exactly the prescription I needed.

It makes me laugh, but also makes me realize that even with life's problems, we can all muddle our way through and even have a laugh at the things that make us human. To keep enjoying what you like to do no matter how tough life is.

Whether it's Kotomi's ruthlessness as she tries to keep the bathhouse afloat or Nenji's penchant for burning things. It's obvious that they both like their jobs and are happy to be doing what they are doing, even to the extreme.

Each character's purpose is clearly defined, even hilariously over-defined in some instances.

This is why Niea_7 is really Mayuko's story as she struggles to find her purpose in life when things seem piled up against her. She seems to just drift through life devoid of anything in her life that could make her forget her problems for awhile and make her happy.

This is what makes her sort of an outcast amongst her peers...and it takes the most unlikliest person to remind her of something she used to enjoy doing and get her motivated.

Niea_7 is definitely something to treasure. It'll put a smile on your face, make you laugh out loud and give a warm glow to your heart. ... Read more

American viewers know Genesis Climber Mospeada (1983) as one of thethree unrelated series combined to form Robotech, but it's beenunavailable in its original form. The program bombed when it aired in Japan (the toysdidn't even sell), but Robotech fans have kept its memory alive. In the original story, Stig Bernard is a dedicated officer in the force sentby the human colony on Mars to free Earth from the alien Inbit, who conqueredthe planet 33 years earlier. Stig survives the destruction of the space fleetand forges a group of freedom fighters out of the unlikely individuals heencounters: irrepressible Ray, tough-as-nails Houquet, whiny Mint, Jim themechanic, and transvestite singer Yellow. They bond as they destroy a seeminglyendless succession of Inbit mecha. The Refles, the ruler of Inbit, morphsthree warriors into human form. The females fall in love with Stig and Yellow;the male becomes a fanatic warrior, whom Stig dispatches in a climactic duel. Mospeada ends on a weak note: after 24 episodes of warfare, theRefles suddenly decides to lead her people to another planet where they can realize ahigher destiny. Unlike their previous rereleases of Robotech, ADV did the neededrestoration work for Mospeada: the colors are true, with no fading to pink.Although it's interesting to compare the original series with the familiarRobotech version, Genesis Climber Mospeada reveals just how farJapanese animation has developed in the intervening decades. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Different Experience.
I grew up with the Robotech Trilogy version of the Mospeada television series and didn't think I needed the unaltered, Japanese original. But, I must say it's like watching a completely new story. Not that there are many differences between the Robotech and the original show. It's all about a difference between what American audiences and Japanese audiences wanted from their television shows. The music and dialogue is different. The whole mood of the two series' are polar opposites in some respects. It's surprising how different the same show can atually be. ... Read more

Producers at Harmony Gold edited together Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross to create Robotech (1985), a landmark sci-fi adventure that helped to establish an audience for Japanese animation in America. In the final episodes of the Macross segment, the Lisa-Rick-Minmei romantic triangle plays out against the ongoing Earth-Zentraedi conflict and the machinations of rebel Zentraedi captain Khyron, which devastate much of the planet.

Intimations of a new threat posed by the distant Robotech Masters serve as a lead-in to the second part of the epic. A planned 65-episode fourth installment in the saga was never completed, but the first four episodes and some additional footage were combined into the feature Robotech II: The Sentinels, the final installment in the Robotech continuity. The supplemental "Elements of Robotechnology III" disc includes The Sentinels, a trailer for it prepared for the 1987 Toy Fair, and a rather self-serving commentary by writer-director Carl Macek. Members of Gen-X who grew up on Robotech will delight in retracing these romances and battles; it's a classic, of sorts. Viewers accustomed to the more rapid pacing, dynamic action, and sophisticated direction of recent anime will tire of the endless shilly-shallying. Unrated; suitable for ages 8 and up: Mild violence restricted to spaceship and robot battles. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Final Box of the Macross Saga
This box set contains the following. Robotech Vol. 5, Robotech Vol. 6 and Robotech Extra Disc 3. Since the first two discs can be bought seperately, my review will be on the extra disc.

This disc is focused on the Harmony Gold\Tatsuko studio's sequel to Robotech right after the Macross Saga ends called The Sentinals. Unlike Codename Robotech, the video quality here was extremely well. The audio commentary by Carl Macek is sadly a text he read from one of his books explaining the Sentinels. The rest of the extras center around the Sentinals. Inluding bios on all characters, mecha design sheets, character models and promotional film with additional footage. The only extra that seperates itself from the Sentinals is the two International Clips which both feature Minmei.

The Sentinals is the story of the surviving crew from Macross along with new ones that build the SDF-3 to establish piece negotiations with the Robotech Masters. While Rick contemplates getting married to Lisa, the Robotech Master's people are having some trouble when the Invid come searching for the Flower of Life.

Overall, great episodes, great extras, how can you argue? A must have for any anime fan.

Note: Look for an Astro Boy and Godzilla toy box in Episode 35.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dramatic Conclusion...MUST OWN
The Robotech Legacy: Macross Saga Collection 3, a three disc collection, contains episodes 25 through 36 of the legendary anime series from the mid 1980s. The first two discs contain six episodes each. The third disc contains the "Exclusive DVD feature presentation" of "Robotech II: The Sentinels," the little seen feature film of the aborted "Season Two" of Robotech. It is only available if you purchase this boxed set. Out of all the releases, the special feature makes this 3rd Boxed Set Collection a MUST OWN!!!

Set in the 21st century, Robotech was the most popular of the Americanized Japanese anime series to hit American TV waves during the 1970s and 1980s. Known for its cutting edge animation, high tech battle scenes, futuristic weapons (planes, tanks, motorcyles that transform into robots), cool alien invaders, and realistic and compelling storylines, Robotech swept an entire generation and helped put Japanese Anime forever on the map of American pop culture.

Robotech's sweeping saga spanned three generations, weaving together three separate actual Japanese anime series. The basic story premise is that the earth became forever changed when a mysterious alien battleship crashed on earth. The people of the world, now knowing that they are not alone, end all wars and unite to assimilate the advanced technology and prepare for the inevitable alien invasion that is sure to come. Disc 3: Elements of Robotechnology III

This is the "Special DVD features" disc that contains all the DVD extras. Compared to the previous releases THIS IS THE GEM OF THE BUNCH. It is only purchasable with the Boxed Set. On this disc you'll find the following:

1. Feature Film: Robotech II: The Sentinels. MUST SEE, this is the "sequel" to the original 85 episode series picking up right after the Macross Saga. Find out what happens to Rick, Lisa, Minmei, Max, Miriya and all the rest. The story picks up 9 years after the last episode of the Macross Saga as the REF gets ready to depart for the Robotech Masters' Homeworld. It ties up all the lose storylines from all 3 generations.

2. Audio Commentary with Carl Macek: Another MUST LISTEN. Macek voice-overs the feature presentation once again offering insights not only into the storyline of Robotech, but also it's production as well as the animation world as well.

3. Robotech II: The Sentinels promo: 10 minute promo highlighting scenes from the aborted 65 episode Sentinels series.

4. Character and Mecha sheets from the Sentinels

5. Bios for characters from the Sentinels. Great background info revealing a lot of the storylines of what would have been...

Out of all the releases so far this is the MUST OWN. The Sentinels features on the E3 disc is a MUST HAVE for all true fans of the series as you'll see what would have been in store had the series continued into a second season.

Robotech is BY FAR one of THE BEST animation products EVER. If you've never seen Robotech, simply put YOU MUST. The action and the drama are compelling, clearly showing why Robotech became a pop culture icon. It is the series that forever put Japanese anime on the map in the US. If you did grow up with Robotech, give these a watch again. They're great for a trip down memory lane. Honestly, watching these episodes now I can honestly say that they are better than I remember. You can't lose!!!

MUST OWN!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Remastered DVDs Coming Soon. Do Not Buy this Set!
Robotech is the classic English translation of three Japanese cartoon series Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada. To say that the Robotech Saga was great does it no justice. Robotech is extraordinary. One of the first animes to make the jump from Japan to the US, Robotech brought animation to a whole new level in the US.

This isn't a cartoon with 30-minute essentially non-related episodes. The Robotech Saga melds 3 different Japanese cartoons into one storyline. Although I am not the biggest fan of Southern Cross or the 3rd Generation, the First generation, which encompasses the first 36 Episodes of Robotech is simply stellar. The storyline is robust, characters are amazingly developed, and the action is amazing. The animation may be a bit plain, but considering that Macross was first drawn 20 years ago, I would argue that it has withstood time quite well.

Although Robotech is a must-own for any fan of anime, DO NOT BUY THIS SET!!! ADV is coming out with a remastered version of Robotech on DVD which will include digitally remastered video, sound, and additional footage never before aired in the US. I unfortunately bought this set well before the announcement of the new set and was somewhat disappointed with the video and sound quality of these DVDs. In addition, most of the Bonus DVDs in these sets contain useless items, except for E3, which contains the Sentinels episodes. My recommendation would be to buy the E3 bonus disc separately and wait for the Remastered version to be released.

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice trip down memory lane
I just got Robotech legacy #3 and it's everything I expected and more. Makes me wish I was 16 again. In this age of Cartoon Network and MTV, "anything goes" but it's dissapointing how now more than ever, animation producers and writers are sticking to formula. Either that or they're jumping on "imitating the lastest hot anime" bandwagon. Call Carl Macek a butcher if you want but he had a good idea during a time when experimentation was actually encouraged. And it was an experiment that worked
The only thing I really am dissapointed about is some of the extras on the Sentinels tapes. The character bios, for example should have had extra screens. They covered Rick, Lisa and all the old carryover characters from Macross saga as expected as well as some of the new ones like Cabell and Rem, but they left out a lot of the new characters. Most notable are missing bios for important characters such as Dr. Lang, T.R. Edwards, Vince and Jean Grant, the Regent and Regiss, Tesla, and the Sentinels themselves.
The Sentinels audio commentary by Carl Macek was really nothing more than his "dry" reading of his Robotech Art 3 book. The first 4 chapters anyway. Mostly verbatim. Interesting but I thought a traditional running commentary on the video itself would have been more interesting as there was a plenthora of interesting stuff to analyze and discuss. The book material could have been an additional documentary style extra in and of itself. Better yet, why not just reprint the book for those who didn't get to buy it. There's probably money in it.
The oldest part of my almost 20 year old video collection is the Robotech episodes that I taped off TV back in 85-86. Unfortunately, on today's VCRs and TVs, they look really crappy. And I'm glad I've got Robotech Legacy's DVDs so I can retire those tapes (20 year old videotapes will die an ignoble death in 2003 VCRs after too long, so if you taped these shows off TV, get Robotech Legacy and let your old VHS tapes rest in peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic TV Series
Robotech has always been in my life. I don't remember ever watching Bert and Ernie or Mr. Rogers or anything like that as a child--I would just vaguely remember Lynn Minmei in her red Chinese dress. As a middle schooler, I thought I would grow up to be like Miriya and become an ace fighter pilot (Ha!). It's funny how things change, but now, as a college student, I appreciate not only the whole story but the love triangle in the story--especially Minmei, who always came across as an annoying little... But having experienced a love triangle of my own, I have come to sympathize (sp?) with her.
Anyway, the Robotech series is a classic that everyone should experience watching (even if you're like me and don't like Japanimation--Robotech is different!). These particular DVD's sadly bring the conclusion of one of the greatest stories of all time. Why is the story so great? Well, there's action, drama, comedy, romance, etc. There is also a great number of characters that the viewers come to care about, and each of them, with their own uniqueness, contribute to the greatness of the Macross story. The main character is Rick Hunter, who follows the footsteps of his best friend Roy Fokker and joins the Robotech forces against the 40 feet tall alien Zentradai that have come for the SDF-1 (a huge alien ship that the humans have transformed for their own protection). Rick Hunter falls in love with Lynn Minmei, who later becomes a famous entertainer, and forms a strong relationship with his commanding officer Lisa Hayes throughout the series. And then there is Max Sterling, the modest ace pilot of the SDF-1, who constantly out-manuevers Miriya, the Zentradai ace pilot of the elite Quadrono Squadron. (My favorite episode is "Farewell Big Brother" when they first combat each other).
I also commend the writers of Robotech for having such strong female characters, like Claudia, who is a solid rock to all around her.
Although the Sentinels return to some of the old Macross characters with new and interesting ones, I don't think it's as good as Macross. So it makes me sad everytime I watch the very last scene of Macross and hear Minmei's song bringing it all to a close...

where silver suns have golden moons
each year has thirteen Junes
that's what must be for me

4-0 out of 5 stars Art Overcomes the Commonplace
Escaflowne: The Movie is an example of how individual producers and performers can overcome the limitations of a genre. The story, which varies greatly from that of the television series, actually features a degree of originality. Scenes involving the over-sized "robot" battle suits are kept to a bare minimum, thereby making what is seen of them much more effective. The voice work by the Japanese performers is among the best you will find in anime. The English track, as usual, hurts the film badly, as the rhythms of English simply do not fit with the rhythms of the film, particularly in this case.

There are visual moments in Escaflowne which also transcend the limitations of anime. It is true that the story is marred by the visual inclusion of the "cute" and decidedly comic-book minor characters that so often keep anime in the realm of children's films. And too much of it is rather static. But there are also scenes of great visual beauty and innovative technique. Somewhere inside the people who made this film is another Princess Mononoke.

Perhaps the best aspect of this film is its score: a full, richly-toned orchestral suite. The inclusion in this three-disc boxed set of a CD containing the score is a definite plus. The score of Escaflowne is, bar none, the best done for an anime film...and deserving of far more attention than it is likely to get.

The second disc is "exras"...some interviews with the three principal Japanese voice actors (fun but not very interesting, really); some moments with the producer, the composer, and the director (who seems almost unable to speak when he is around other people); and lots of details about design and planning and production that will be of enormous interest to anime devotees but are quite boring to everyone else.

In brief: Escaflowne is a superior anime with a brilliant score, and this boxed set of three discs is a good value.

5-0 out of 5 stars My thoughts on this movie
This movie is one of the best and i think its really original and the opening reminds me of the video at the beginning of onimusha 3 and i believe that this movie is way better than the series because the series is somewhat kiddish and really obsolete in the way that its a 26 epsiode children series and you basically get an overview of the entire series in just one movie which i think is a + and if you're a die hard fan of escaflowne you will apperciate this movie for what it is and i believe it some of the best anime out there and still isnt as korny as gundam is and i believe that gundam was derived by this series/movie either if you want you should buy one of the two the box set of the series or the movie i dont recommend the box set because no one want to spend 3 days just watching an entire series and then watching the movie and find out its same as the series only shorter but the storyline is almost the same the way that hitomi is taken from the mystic moon and sure some parts of the movie are a blur but it you ever get a chance to watch it you will learn to apperciate escaflowne for what it really is "THE BEST OF THE BEST"

4-0 out of 5 stars Not A Classic But Very Pleasant
* I picked up ESCAFLOWNE THE MOVIE (ETM) on a gamble, knowing nothing
about it ahead of time. I was expected from what I saw of it that it
was a fairly straightforward fantasy piece, and as it turned out, that
was precisely what it was.

ETM is the story of Hitomi, a discouraged and depressed Japanese
high-school student, who seems to be drifting somewhere near the
end of her rope when she runs into a mysterious stranger, who transports
her to the world of Gaea. There she finds herself involved in a war
between a gang of fighters, including the hotheaded young warrior
Lord Van, and a fairly traditional Evil Empire, led by the brutal
Lord Folken, who has a death wish literally as big as an entire planet.

Hitomi finds that she is actually the "Wing Goddess", who is linked
spiritually to the ultra-powerful "Escaflowne" battle armor -- think
a mecha based on mystical and not mechanical principles. In a series
of adventures with Lord Van, she must use her relationship with the
Escaflowne to guide the future of Gaea.

The story premise is straightfoward fantasy-novel stuff; the whole
"disaffected adolescent who is really a messiah or wotnot in an
alternate world" comes across as a bit comical, considering the way
it panders to the egotism of the reader or viewer, often disaffected
adolescents who wished there was more to their lives. However,
although the plot of ETM is somewhat by-the-numbers, it still snaps
along nicely and the movie never drags or insults the viewer's
intelligence. The characterizations come across as a bit sketchy,
but ETM covers a lot of ground in a short time and it would be hard
to do much more under the circumstances.

All that in itself would not amount to much of a recommendation for
ETM. However, although I was expecting something very run-of-the-mill
from this movie, from the outset I had to think: "This is very
nicely done!" The production values are very conscientious, with pretty
artwork, particularly of landscapes and skyscapes, backed up by a
sparkling soundtrack; beginning with Indian raga music, progressing
through various musical styles (including a techno-disco number) and
ending with what sounds perfectly like a country-pop romantic tune
-- sung in Japanese.

I definitely found ESCAFLOWNE THE MOVIE to be time well and pleasantly
spent. It's not actually topknotch -- the character designs tend to
come across as a little wooden and stereotypical, and it's somewhat
more gory and violent than makes sense, though I didn't have much of a
problem myself with the bloodshed. I doubt that anybody who doesn't
like fantasy will much care for it, and I couldn't claim it was a
really memorable film -- but it sure is pretty! I might try picking
up the anime series, which I understand has roughly the same
characters but a completely rearranged plot.

5-0 out of 5 stars although not as good as the series, still an awesome movie!
This movie is just simply amazing! No matter how many times I watch it, the opening fight scene with Van still leaves me breathless. But this movie can get just a tad bit confusing if you haven't seen the series, for example: Why Van has wings. So I would recommend watching the series first and then the movie. Any how, any Esca fan should own this movie. It really is a must see! ^_____^

5-0 out of 5 stars Opinions Shall Vary
okay, i need to get this across because this is probably the main factor on why some people say it's great and why some people say it just wasn't. The series, the vision of escaflowne, was in fact intended to be a shoujo (aimed at girls) anime. Me, being a guy, saw the vision of escaflowne and still loved it, along with a huge population of guy anime fans. Therefore, escaflowne: the movie was created and was intended to be more of a shounen (aimed at guys) anime. The outcome was great. I enjoyed this more than the vision of escalfowne for five main reasons: (1) Hitomi is literally depressed, and not perky and annoying as she is in the series. (2) There is no love triangle, or square, or whatever the hell you want to call that thing with van, hitomi, marlerna, allen, and merryl. (3) You get to see characters such as van and allen acually use those swords you always see them carrying around. (4) During fights you see blood used not as good as Samurai X but more accurate than the series. (5) The way the armors, such as escaflowne, are used is different from most mecha (giant robot) animes in the sense it acually draws the users blood. Although, the vision of escaflowne does have one element over the movie: the characters in series (if you don't count hitomi) have much more depth, my favorite character Fulken's personality is ruined in the movie but it is only an hour so they don't have time to put depth into too many characters. Well i just wanted to clear that up, so whether you're a guy or a girl i hope i helped in your decision. ... Read more

The romantic comedy Hand Maid May feels like pieces of Oh MyGoddess, Tenchi Muyo, El Hazard, and Steel AngelKurumi cobbled together. The premise is no more improbable, thecharacters no sillier, the holes in the plot no more egregious than in thosecomedies, but the elements never quite gel, and the show plays like a rerun, even on the first viewing. Kazuya is a computer nerd, trying to create asquid version of the famous robot-cat Doraemon. When a virus zaps his system,he inadvertently orders a Hyperdoll--a girl one-sixth normal size. May triesto perform a maid's duties despite her diminutive stature, and the inevitablemismatched attraction arises. When Kazuya can't pay the $1.45 million bill,May is repossessed by the Cyberdyne Corp. But a kindly robot offers toprovide him with a replacement--free of charge. A full-sized version of Mayappears and they pick up where they left off. But Kazuya's kindness attractsother beautiful Hyperdolls. The predictable contretemps include the jealousyof Nanbara, Kazuya's self-proclaimed best friend and worst enemy. Things takea weird turn when Kazuya's and Nanbara's descendants arrive from the futureand begin messing with the story line. The low-key romance is juxtaposed withjiggle shots and risqué jokes. The original series ran 10 episodes--apointless 11th OAV has been added--and the episodes stretched over threediscs. The fourth contains supplemental material. 5-0 out of 5 stars Consider this another keeper!
I had heard about this series when I got "I Dream of Mimi". It was made to sound rather...risque. Some were calling it Hentai. I figured that it couldn't be as risque as "Mimi" was.

Turns out I was right.

This was a sweet story. Some would say a bit predictable...
True...but no more so than in most superhero comics.

Almost all the characters were likeable (Sorry, Kotoro, you're a BIT too much over the top, even for an anime...), filled with life, convincing, and enjoyable to watch. The plotline, for the most part, was solid, as well.

However, I did think that the aforementioned plotline began to fragment a bit as it neared the conclusion, just when I was beginning to hope that everything would all come together and be answered. (Most specifically, time travel and causality regarding Kazuya/Kotaro and thier destinies). (I would've preferred the 11th episode to address these logical problems, rather than being the enjoyable 'filler' episode that it came off being, IMO.) Then again, that MAY be intentional on the creators' part, and it may all be resolved if they choose to do more episodes in the future. I DO hope they do so, as the characters all but BEG to be developed further...

The additional CD in this set was was enjoyable to read through, with behind-the-scenes info on the series, the characters, and the creators.

(I thought that Kotoro's 'music area' on disk #1 was cute, but unnecessary.)

The audio character snippits in the 4 DVD's were enjoyable. I'd love to put them as sounds on my computer.

All told, even with those few minor quibbles, I heartily believe I got my money's worth with this set. It's another gem for my growing anime collection and WELL worth the money, IMHO.

(One last question...If May, at a foot tall (Barbie-sized) costs $1,450,000...how much would the full-sized Sara, Mami, Kei or Rena be? $1 billion?)

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute series
Simply put, this series is good. It is a little short, but the pacing is nice and all of the characters are enjoyable. It has quite a bit of fan-service, though nothing just horrible. I'd recommend it to anyone really, seasoned anime watchers or someone new to it. It's a great box set and a good price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Less is More - Sadly, they don't agree.
I really wanted to like this series, and for the first few episodes I did. Saotome, Kasumi and May make for an enjoyable show. But once Kei, Mami, Rena, Sara, and the annoying Nambara get added to the mix, the show is just diluted beyond hope. It's a Tenchi / Hina formula that just doesn't work and too many characters are just plain annoying.

Not to give anything away, but later in the show things come together and wrap up rather well, if quite a bit stretched. The ending is quite nice. This series had a chance of being great, but it ends up simply sub par. If you really like Robo Girl series and Tenchi / Hina series, give it a shot. The first few and last few episodes are quite worth watching. Sadly, the middle is rather filler.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I expected, but a very good anime
I first watched this anime many years ago as a dub. And despite the many criticisms it recieved for the actors and actresses participating in the english dubbing, I thought they were pretty good. Yakumo's original english voice did a really good job and so did several others. This dvd dub doesn't have the same enthusiasm and same feel as the original dubbing, though Yakumo's english voice displayed great voice acting. I guess I didn't like this dubbing so much because I was so used to the original dubbing of the film and much of the dialogue was changed.

Anyways, on to my review...The video quality is not of the usual dvd quality seen in more recent dvd anime, due to the age of the film. However, the second disc, since it is newer, has better animation and artwork.

The story is pretty good and is one of my favorite anime of all time. However, the story seems unresolved in this dvd set and hopefully there will be future plans in continuing the story (I've heard rumors of a tv series of 3x3 eyes). The romance within the story is also well done. All in all, this anime classic should be watched by all anime fans. Despite all of the obstacles it had on its way to America, 3x3 eyes finally made its way here and hopefully many will come to appreciate this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little Known Anime Classic
3x3 has to be one of the virtually unknown classics of anime-and this DVD set has to be the best deal for a fan there is. Previously only the first 4 parts of the 7 were release on VHS, leaving 5&6 hard to find-while 7 never actually came out for the public (at least in America, I could be wrong else where.)

The mini-series begins the saga of Yakumo, and his quest to make Pai, his demon-acquaintance, human. A strange bond develops between the two of them, binding them together through thick and thin. Their journey takes them to Hong Kong and back to Japan, where they finally become separated-how they get back together is a story in its own.

The animation is great is some places, and lacking in others-but the strange plot and crazy characters make up for it. The music might seem a tad familiar to any one who has seen Braveheart-you might even swear that the producers of Braveheart borrowed it from the anime :) 3x3 Eyes is, however, extremely gory, which is critical to plot. But the gore is well done, and a vital part of enjoying the anime, in my humble opinion. ;) The series is truly superb for any otaku or anime-fan, but perhaps a little too much for someone just getting started on their anime fix.

4-0 out of 5 stars 3X3 Eyes
This dvd is excellent. The only reson I only gave it four stars is because it leaves off just when the plot starts to fall into place.

1-0 out of 5 stars the cover is a lie
when i first bought this anime i thought i was buying something with good-looking anime (like on the cover) with a fun plot.boy was i wrong!the picture on the cover is so incredibly different than the drawings in the movie.pass this one up!the plot is fine actually, a boy trying to save a girl from a life she doesn't want by helping her find this magical statue.sounds cool right?wrong.not only did they somehow manage to ruin this cool sounding plot but you are totally disgusted by the characters and how they're drawn.please believe me when i say you do not want this dvd.(i only gave this dvd a star because you just can't give a movie with ten drawings a second no stars.that would be totally cruel.even if it did turn out to be a bad movie.)

4-0 out of 5 stars It was okay
The first four episodes were good and I happened to like them. (But I was kind-of angry that they got rid of some of the parts which I liked in the manga). But the last three, when Pai loses her memories, got me upset. They weren't good and because of them they made me stop liking the series. (of course, that didn't last when volume 7 of the manga came out). The story is a LOT better in the manga. What makes me wonder is why the producers only made 7 episodes when the story continues to get even better. (there are 40 volumes in the manga. That's a lot.) Since this was made in the late 80's or early 90's, don't expect the animation to be all that good. Some of the movement kind of bugged me and well... I didn't watch it in english, but I bet it was terrible. I think they should find better voice actors for anime, its starting to really piss me off. Anyway if you feel that you have to watch it, I recommend borrowing it from a friend or renting it to save money or better yet, is to get the manga. ... Read more

When bullied nerd Noboruattempts suicide, Onizuka saves his life, trashing the vice-principal's treasuredcar in the process. He breaks down the wall that divides Mizuki and herparents--figuratively and literally--and is rewarded with her panties. Each act ofkindness or courage wins a few more students to his side--and infuriates hisenemies.Although the animation is often crude, with distorted drawingssubstituting for changes of expression, GTO exerts a gross-out, slapstick appeal. It's a long way from To Sir, with Love. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Teacher Onizuka
I can say without a doubt that GTO is my favorite anime of all time. It tells the story of Eikichi Onizuka, an ex-biker and virgin, and his quest to become the greatest teacher alive. But to reach his goal he'll have to get by his proclaimed adversary the vice-principal, bullies, classroom terrorists, and the mob. All while trying to instill life lessons upon his students and find himself a girlfriend.

To me GTO has it all: a great story, excellent character development, life applicable lessons, and enough laughs to having you rolling on the floor. If you haven't picked this up you're doing yourself a great injustice.*HIGHLY RECOMMENDED*

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Series, Shame About the Dub.
I first caught this series on Internet TV in Japanese Sub.
I loved it so bought the box set.
The production quality of the set is good, though the extras are hit and miss - The outtakes (disk 5) are funny.
BUT, the dub is Awful, worth maybe 3 stars.
I've heard these actors in other series, where they are ok, but they don't suit GTO, with Onisuka being particularly bad in the dub.
Buy this and ignore the Dub, just watch the Sub. I'll be buying the next Box set on release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great series
I have to say this is one of the best anime series i have ever seen.I rented it with my expectations low but i was wrong. It really lets you see alot of japenese culture and food.I really suggest this series SO BUY IT NOW.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must buy!!!!!!!!!!!!
The greatest anime series ever is now in one box set with a fashionable T- shirt! What's not to like? A must buy for anyone of any age anywhere. I picked mine up at best buy for $66.99

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible ride!
I purchased all the DVDs individually. Each volume contains incredible stories taking you on a ride of laughs, paniced moments, frenzied 'what's gonna happen next?' and even a few tear jerkers! I think this is one of the most entertaining, diverse Anime series I have ever seen. The off-the-wall antics of Onizuka are something to behold! And the twists and turns in each story line keep you glued watching it! I highly recommend this! The first few ephisodes make him out to be a perve, and while he still kind of is, there's something captivating about him (that you'll discover if you keep watching).

The animation quality is pretty good (not as good as say .hack, but very well done). The characters supporting GTO are also diverse, entertaining, and... Well, the whole thing is a train wreck that you just HAVE TO WATCH! .... ... Read more

As the Sailor Moon TV episodes tend to be repetitive, the sustained stories in the features allow the artists to explore the familiar characters in a little more depth. In all three films, Serena and her friends Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina (Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto, and Minako in Japanese), aided by Darren (Mamoru), fight off aliens bent on destroying the world. In the R movie (1993), the villain is Fiore, who is held in thrall by the sinister Kisenian Flower. In the S movie (1994), Kaguya wants to encase the Earth in ice; Badiyanu kidnaps children and uses their "dream energy" to create a planet-engulfing black hole in Super S (1995). The two later films include "Outer Scouts" Michiru, Haruka, and Setsuna, a.k.a. Sailors Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto. R enjoys the best reputation among fans and has the most interesting story. Fiore treats Serena as a rival for Darren's affections, and the subtitles suggest the attachment is quite passionate; the dubbed version sounds tamer. A weird subplot in which Luna the cat falls in love with the kindhearted astronomer Kakeru throws the S movie out of kilter. Super S offers imaginative visuals, including elaborate CG effects and brightly colored backgrounds. All three films provide the broad humor, budding adolescent romance, magic, and affirmations of the power of friendship that Sailor Moon fans expect. Suggested 13 Up: Violence, brief nudity. The VHS editions are edited and are suitable for age 6 and up. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest show in the world crosses over
This Dream Box Set is truely Sailor Moon at its best. I loved all three movies, although it would not be very hard for a die hard fan like me!!!! The DVD version offers a whole lot of extra stuff, such as songs, images and info on characters but best of all it's got tranformation scenes!!!!! I love Sailor Mars' one so much, hasn't she got the best shoes? The storylines also allow the other scouts to shine a bit more but not too much because of the restrains of the time. If you're gonna spend your money wisely this year, buy this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST DEAL FOR THE MOVIES
Instead of purchasing each dvd why not just get this boxset version, it's exactly the same. Plus it comes with a box (thus calling it boxset =^_^=) to keep these sailor moon movies in place.

Each movie are from a specific season. "Promise of the Rose" was from the Sailor Moon R season. This is one of my favourite movie in the entire world because it shows the past of Mamoru (Darien) during his younger years. Very sweet =^v^=

Sailor Moon S - "Hearts in Ice" was a good movie too! If you've read the graphic novel by Mixx Sailor Moon 11, the movie is based on this section of the story. Luna is so pretty as a human. ^_~

Sailor Moon SuperS - "Black Dream Hole" involves a new friend that Chibiusa's makes. This movie really shows the loving relationship between Usagi and Chibiusa even though they may fight a lot they really love each other as a family (along with Mamoru) ;D

5-0 out of 5 stars I WANT THIS SET!
My review Is based only on the Vhs Pioneer Version. I have not had the pleasure of viewing these great movies in the uncut version yet. Actually, I am still working on getting the series in Japanese right now. I just want to say that based on the English version, these movies ROCK! All of them keep you on the emotional level that the series captured from the beginning. But, I have to say that the S movie is my favorite because for once you really get to see Luna open up. She is always trying to set an example for Serena, but this time, you get to share her tears and sadness. I just wish I could afford this set. Does nobody have this any cheaper!?!?!? Now that I am finally seeing some of the series the way it was really made, I want to see all in the Japanese version! I just have a question though. One review I read said the English dubbing is different from the dic version and makes Pluto sound like a little girl. How different is the dubbing exactly??? I leave Five Stars because I know this set will be great.

5-0 out of 5 stars watch out for the price!
I know that amazon usually does a really good job about making sure products are priced more cheaply than in stores, but I saw this product online yesterday and decided to check out a store at the mall to be sure it wasn't cheaper there...it was only $45.99!!! new, same product. I recommend the dvds to any sailor moon fan, i loved the second movie best out of them all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sailor Moon The Movies Dream Box Set
This Box Set is what but what is the difference between this one and the new one that was just released on 1/6/2004?

Hi Usagi-Chan I like your review and was just wanting to know if the season1 and 2 boxsets are in English or just Japanese and if they are only in Japanese are they worth the money for someone who only understands English and Does not want Subtitles. ... Read more

This long, involving anime series should provide a wonderful stepping stone for youngsters being weaned from Pokémon. Based partially on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water begins as Jean, a young French boy who builds airplanes, teams with his uncle to enter a flying competition at the 1899 World's Fair in Paris. It's there that the preteen Jean meets and immediately falls for the exotic Nadia, who leads an unhappy life as a circus performer. Jean turns protector when Nadia is chased by a trio of bumbling villains who are after the mysterious "blue water" in Nadia's necklace. Their pursuit leads to the open sea, where Jean and Nadia board an American battleship searching for a vengeful sea monster, ultimately revealed as Captain Nemo's submarine, Nautilus. This first series from Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) has some of the charm and rich detail of the films of Hayao Miyazaki (who "conceived" the story) but features cardboard villains that could be distant cousins of Pokémon's Team Rocket. Nadia, Secret of Blue Water stepped into the limelight in 2001, 11 years after its original production, thanks to myriad similarities to Disney's ambitious animated feature Atlantis: The Lost Empire, including period setting, design, characters, story, and a mystical blue necklace. This set delivers the first half of the series--39 episodes spanning 16 hours--which is far too long, as the story runs out of stream in the final third. Two CD soundtracks are also included. (Rated 12 and older for violence, but suitable for ages 7 to teens) --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best episodes of NADIA in a conveniently priced pacakge!
Combining elements of Jules Verne's 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA with Hayao Miyazaki's CASTLE IN THE SKY, this 39-part TV Anime series (which had originally been conceived, interestingly, by the man himself but produced by GAINAX) has proven to be a popular favorite with millions of fans since its initial 1990-1991 broadcast in Japan. In particular, Nadia, one of the most interesting (and occasionally annoying) characters ever to be realized, has shown up on the Japanese Animage polls as favorite Anime heroine, dethroning Miyazaki's NAUSICAA. Despite having an impressive fan base, NADIA: THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER has had little exposure to U.S. audiences, but ADV Films has recently released the entire TV show (plus the infamous, ill-fated theatrical version) to introduce this charming, involving, and sometimes traumatic fan favorite to budding Anime fans.

What makes NADIA: THE SECRET OF BLUE WATER so much fun are the characters that propel this action-adventure set in 1889 Europe. First off, I absolutely ADORE the main character, an endearing 14-year-old aspiring aviator named Jean; he displays an incredible depth of bravery, confidence, and brains -- he handles EVERYTHING by using his intelligence. He's also consistently sweet, honest, loyal, and compassionate -- probably the sort of Best Friend or Love Interest ANYONE would ever want to have. He treats everybody with kindness and respect, and, as such, everyone likes him, too. Actually, the primary reason why the show keeps us interested is BECAUSE of Jean.

Nadia herself, by contrast, is, as stated above, not always the most likable character in the show. She is the sort of girl who has her own share of problems and really has a lot of growing up to do. While Nadia is capable of showing goodness to her friends and finds herself falling in love with Jean, she does not know how to express herself to him. Nor does she know how to talk about her problems; she often reduces herself to fits of anger and frustration which, of course, damage her relationships (thankfully Jean is loving and patient enough to forgive her). Nadia has never had any experiences trusting anybody other than animals, and, as such, is socially inept. She's also, at times, frustratingly stubborn and impossible to reason with -- particularly when it comes to her rather shrewd opinions about eating meat, killing, and/or especially grown-ups. However, she DOES do a lot of things which show that she cares deeply about Jean throughout the show, and it is endearing to watch her self-centered, distrusting, suspicious, strong-willed nature slowly change as a result of her love for the boy.

The rest of the characters are richly created and developed. There's Marie, a cheerful and happy little girl who shares some of the best moments with Nadia's pet lion cub, King, as well as a howlingly funny trio of bandits who at first are enemies but later prove to be true friends
