JFK: A Presidency Revealed delves unflinchingly into the presidencyof John F. Kennedy, examining the political crises, social unrest, andpersonal intricacies that marked his administration. What makes thisthree-part series stand out is its willingness to admit Kennedy'sfaults--in particular his troubled marriage, his infidelities, hisillnesses, and his sometimes-excessive use of painkillers to cope with thepain of his bad back--as well as the missteps of his presidency, providinga strikingly balanced and human portrait of this all-too-often-mythologized president. Particularly revelatory is how the inexperiencethat resulted in the bungled Bay of Pigs operation led, in turn, to a farmore skilled and careful handing of the Cuban missile crisis, in which theworld came closer to nuclear war than ever before and perhaps ever since.A wealth of film, video, photographs, and previously unreleased secretrecordings provide new insights into Kennedy's political and personal life(Kennedy was, as this documentary makes clear, the first president toreally use the media to achieve his goals, launching an entirely newpolitical forum).

Accompanying JFK: A Presidency Revealed are twoepisodes of A&E's Biography series--one a considerably morehero-worshipping profile of Kennedy that nonetheless provides worthwhilebackground information about his childhood and early career; the other aprofile of JFK's father Joe P. Kennedy that explores the drive andambition that set the entire Kennedy family on its political path. All inall, a valuable and informative document. --Bret Fetzer ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars JFK LIVES
JFK -- A PRESIDENCY REVEALED (A&E) is the most comprehensive filmed legacy of JFK. Two-discs (over 300 minutes plus extras) feature new interviews with highly placed insiders in the CIA and JFK's administration. Also Soviet footage of the sole super-power summit and never-before-heard recordings from Robert Kennedy and the White House. Two bonus documentaries examine JFK's personal life and that of his father, Joseph Kennedy, Sr.

Amazing how much of JFK's life is on film and how it is interpreted in retrospect. Was he a great president? No. But his wit, style and martyrdom transcend his moral weaknesses.

This well-made, fascinating documenary will hold your attention and provoke thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Presidency Revealed
JFK: A Presidency Revealed is a great documentary on the Kennedy Years. Its airing and subsequent release was part of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of President Kennedy's assassination.
The program features interviews with historians, members of JFK's staff and cabinet, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and many others. Even though it does follow the same pattern as other documentaries and books on President Kennedy, it adds new insight from new documents and medical records. The set features the program, plus bonus features of A&E documentaries on the Kennedy family. This is a fascinating show. Watch it, and then read Robert Dallek's An Unfinished Life.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's left a void, and here's why
This is remarkable piece of work. The only way to do justice to this complex, bright, sensitive and fascinating man is to paint him in the full, giving us the three dimensional image. This documentary does just that, and Kennedy himself would want no less. It enables the viewer to reach back to a rapidly fading time, and feel the void that his passing has left. Like everyone else, he had his human failings and foibles, but these fall into insignificance when compared to his understanding of the human condition and the great movements of history.
You can see at the end of the third part where the bystanders during the anniversary celebrations in Berlin well-up at the sound of his voice delivering his speech from a tape to the modern crowd after 40 years of silence.
What comes through most, however, from this piece of work is his happy courage in the face of great personal adversity. This is the reason why we refuse to forget him and fight to keep him fresh in our minds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best JFK documentary ever...
This outstanding documentary is the most recent, and probably the most accurate, portrait of JFK's dramatic and controversial Presidency. Created by the History Channel and aired in November 2003 to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of JFK's assassination, this documentary offers many new insights into JFK's life and political career. Most of this story will seem familiar (perhaps too familiar) to any Kennedy buff - we follow JFK from his brilliant inaugaral speech in January 1961 through the many crises of his "thousand days" in office - the Bay of Pigs disaster in early 1961, the disastrous summit meeting with Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev in Austria, his brilliant trip to Paris with his wife Jackie, the Berlin Wall crisis, the civil rights battles in the South, and of course the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 and the subsequent easing of tensions with the Soviets in 1963. However, if this were all the DVD offered then it would be rather dull to most of those who have studied the Kennedys. In my opinion this documentary stands out for four reasons: 1)It is more objective and realistic than most previous JFK documentaries, which were either "hatchet jobs" that portrayed JFK as a modern-day Caligula or Nero, or admiring "lovefests" which insisted upon seeing Kennedy as the shining knight of a modern "Camelot". This documentary views JFK as neither a heroic saint nor a perverted devil, but rather as a deeply flawed and complicated fellow whose administrative and foreign-policy inexperience often get him into trouble, but whose genuine political skills and flexibility combine to save him when the trouble comes. JFK is also shown as a man who learns from his mistakes and rarely makes the same mistake twice. 2)This documentary offers new medical records (complete with interviews with a medical doctor) which clearly prove that JFK suffered from terrible medical problems which almost certainly would have prevented him from becoming President in today's political climate. Back problems, adrenal problems, severe allergies - you name it, JFK probably had it. To stay alive he took dozens of pills each day, and even then his horrific back troubles led him to turn to dangerous "quack" doctors such as Dr. Max Jacobsen ("Dr. Feelgood"), who frequently injected a powerful concotion of amphetamines and illegal drugs into his back - injections which might eventually have killed him. Although another person interviewed for this documentary, History Professor Robert Dallek, argues that JFK should be commended for the tremendous willpower he showed in overcoming his physical problems, it is also true that JFK was playing a dangerous game by hiding his infirmities from the public, and that it probably would have caught up with him in a second term. 3)This documentary offers dozens of interviews with people who knew JFK well - from former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara to journalists Ben Bradlee and Hugh Sidey. And some of these people (who are now in the twilight of their lives) offer some surprisingly candid observations on JFK not heard previously. Sidey, who admires JFK, nonetheless strongly critizes his behavior with women and argues that his womanizing would have been exposed in a second term and led to his resignation. McNamara specifically points out for the first time the mistakes that were made in areas such as Vietnam and Cuba which led to trouble for JFK and his advisors. 4)And, finally, while this documentary does look at JFK's womanizing, it doesn't allow these gossipy stories to overshadow the major legacies (good and bad) of his presidency. Overall, this is a superb documentary (one of the History Channel's best efforts in recent years, IMO), and is a worthy addition to any Kennedy buff's collection. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change of Opinion
I have just finished watching JFK: A Presidency Revealed. I am ashamed to admit that I did not care for JFK because I thought this man was one who would have loved to have seen us in a war. From this documentory, I have discovered it was the Joint Chiefs of Staff who wanted us there.

I have changed my opinion of JFK, after the fact. Truly this was a great President! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have been more than it was
Purchased this out of curiosity as to what it might reveal from a historical footage point of view. Was mildly disappointed in that it was a brief documentary with a British narrator best left for a museum exhibit. Considering the Vatican is in possession of footage from the time of Leo XIII as well as that of Pius XI and possibly something of the other two neglected popes:Pius X and Benedict XV, the slight treatment given is somewhat disquieting. Nonetheless the footage of Pius XII is interesting in regards to his coronation, and the enthusiasm he had for riding around on the sedia gestatoria (portable throne). John XXIII was portrayed in a warm light and gives an idea of what he was like. Paul VI came off a little cold. It would've been nice to have full soundbites sans narration with perhaps a subtitle of translation so that the popes could be heard in their own voices. John Paul I was glossed over a little too much. There could've been more shown in regards to the "smiling Pope". All of the announcements of election also could've been shown. A DVD would be the perfect medium for this. It felt somewhat rushed and slightly low budget. Still for collectors, enthusiasts and historians, not to mention the curious, this is an interesting trinket for your viewing pleasure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pope John Paul II: His Biography & Tridentine Mass
This video was done by an amateur, both in the video editing and audio editing. The sound was awful with the background music too loud. The video was narrated by someone who wasn't very professional.

I thought that the Tridentine Mass would have had John Paul II preciding over it. But it was just some priest from California.

I was very disappointed in this set. It's something I wouldn't bother to watch again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pope John Paul II - The Movie
This movie was extremely inspirational. I so enjoyed it! It covers a full span of the Holy Father's life from boyhood to adulthood. The story line shows the Pope's humaness, his intellect, and his great love of God. It also revealed the struggles and strength of the Polish people during World War II. I have recommended it to friends who have equally enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Pope-eye the Savior's man!
Many people today think of John Paul II as some sort of well-intentioned preachy old-timer set in his church's archaic ways, with little, if nothing, relevant to say in our present troubled times. As this movie shows, they couldn't be more wrong! We're talking about a bigger-than-life hero here, if ever there was one!

Albert Finney is astounding in the role of a Polish working class priest witnessing first hand the worst atrocities of the XX century, and putting his own life on the line in order to stop and ammend them. I don't know if Finney ever recieved any award for this perfomance, but I do know John Paul II will go down in history not only as a great pope, but as an example of what being human means!

You don't have to be a Catholic to apreciate this, nor to watch the movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Forgot I was watching Albert Finny, he became Karol Wojtyla
I really forgot I was watching an actor, both young Karol and the man Karol, the acting was so well done by all. Patrick Stewart as an antagonist was superb. One can not help but feel the emotions that Karol felt as his character is formed by the experiences of his life, from the loss of his mother at an early age and his father as a young man, the ocupation by the Germans, the plight of the Jewish families that led him to risk his life for them. Also his meeting with a mentor who intoduces him to St. John of the Cross, he became a Secular Carmelite as a result and the Carmelite St. John of the Cross was to influence his life right up to the present day. It was his dealings with the Communists, as Bishop of Cracow, that gave such hope to the Polish people. An example was at Nowa Huta. This is the story of a man who was formed by the experiences of his life which brought him to the understanding of the true meaning of love. Not the passive kind, but the love that acts to restore the dignity of the human being. It shows his ability to be empathic with the suffering of everyone. It reveals his capacity to understand all sides and to mediate well, which is part of what got him elected to the highest position in the church. It also shows his astute mind and strong-willed commiment to his principles in dealings with the Communists and others. Keep your kleenex handy, you will feel this story very deeply. ... Read more

This History Channel production provides an in-depth look at the Japanese attack on the American Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor on the fateful day of December 7, 1941. The documentary begins by providing a background to the eventual conflict in the Pacific, noting how Japan had been waging a war of conquest in China since the early 1930s. As a power struggle with the U.S. loomed on the horizon, the Japanese built a formidable navy marked by an innovative utilization of carrier-based aircraft. Special attention is given to Admiral Yamamoto, who had studied at Harvard and admired America but vigorously planned the assault on America's naval might. The attack on the morning of December 7 is explained tactically, and films shot at Pearl Harbor during the Sunday morning air raid, including shots of the massive explosion triggered by a bomb hit on the battleship USS Arizona, provide dramatic proof of how devastating the attack was. Personal stories of the battle are recalled in interviews with veterans from both sides. Various revisionist theories about how America had warning of the attack and sacrificed Pearl Harbor are quickly dismissed, and a closing segment focuses on Japanese and American veterans who have reconciled at a reunion (and some American vets who would have no part of that). An additional documentary provides a biography of Admiral Chester Nimitz, who rebuilt the U.S. Pacific fleet following Pearl Harbor, and a bonus program features brief biographies of other American commanders in the Pacific. --Robert J. 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic DVD
This DVD set is great. It has excellent footage of the attack on Pearl Harbor and there is interviews with people who survived the attack and there is even interviews with some Japenese fighter pilots who bombed the ships. It starts at 1939 when the USA decide not to enter The Second World War and goes through the attack on Pearl Harbor and ends at today showing the USS Arizona Memorial. The Set also has a bounus disc with a lot of Pearl Harbor facts as well. This is an amazing DVD and anyone who is interested in USA history should buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars WE ALL NEED TO KNOW OUR HISTORY.
No one seems to appreiate the fact that freedom is not free and everyone takes everything for granted in this country. There are people i've talked to from Europe who know more about our history than most Americans know. This doccumentary is about defeat, anger, determinatin, racism, hatred, triumph, and forgiveness. It really shows the story of pearl harbor(Not that I didn't already know I watch the history channel all the time) and shows all the sacrfices that were made by the American soldiers when Japan destroyed pearl harbor. We could learn allot from some of the Pearl Harbor survivors and the Japanese pilot's that no matter what you can forgive. The Japanese tried to kill them and they(well not all of them) were willing to forgive.

3-0 out of 5 stars War in the pacific
A good documentary, but with all of the Pearl Harbor documentary material out there, why did the creators choose to include a documentary DVD on Chester Nimitz? This set should have been called "War In The Pacific" or something. But, the history is accurate and the footage is good. I would recommend this. It would have been great if they had one DVD about the attack, one dvd about Kimmell, and one DVD about Yamamoto. That would have made this collection stand out from the others! History Channel, ARE YOU READING THIS?

3-0 out of 5 stars A little misleading
The first disc in this offering rates five stars for being an absolutely fantastic documentary. However, the second disc is about Admiral Nimitz and not about Pearl Harbor itself. Also, the bonus program offered is not "Blunders Of Pearl Harbor" but something about leaders of the Pacific theater, again, not about Pearl Harbor itself. I wanted a thorough documentary on Pearl Harbor, which I got on disc one. The second disc seems thrown in haphazardly. The item description, however, didn't mention the Nimitz material on the second disc and got the bonus program wrong entirely. I would've liked a more thorough, not to mention accurate, description before making my purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Familiar Stuff To A History Channel Viewer
But without a doubt, worth the money. Pearl Harbor will be big this summer with the release of Ben Afleck's big screen beefcake-fest of the same name, so it might inspire your kids to watch just some of the story behind the Hollywood treatment. Showing that wars don't just happen, it explains the steady build up of a world heading non-stop to global conflict. Seeing pictures of some of the survivors as young men and hearing their stories as told today, both Japanese and American, adds a very touching human element to a story that we all know the ending. Also, spending time on what happened on December 8 and shortly after helps fill in the picture of an isolationist nation thrust in a rage into a war. Disk Two offers a wonderful look at the man that was responsible for hold Japan at bay while America rebuilt in the Pacific, Chester Nimitz. Another bonus program,"America's Five Star Heros" is familiar, but no less enlightening. All in all, a great choice for the history buff. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME for fans of the books & artwork
If you are a Tolkien book geek you will love these dvd's! These documentaries are a bit dry, but the prolific shots of the Brothers Hildebrandt's artwork is a treat for any fan of their Middle Earth works. They step you through the books, relating Tolkien's influences at the time and drawing connections between his symbolism and imagery. This is a scholarly piece and not to be considered simply "entertaining." If your fandom does not extend far past the recent movies, you may not find these very interesting at all. BUT if you have been a fan forever (or recently, but are now obsessed with the Books) you will find it an excellent viewing. True geeks will probably not find a lot of "new" information inside, but the interviews and the detailed play-by-play will keep you watching anyhow.

In Summary: If you have read all of the books (not just the Trilogy) and have ever had to stop and drool at a brothers Hildebrandt coffee table book, this is a definite must see! If you loved the movies, but aren't up for a bunch of literary scholars sitting around gabbing, pass it by.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woo Hoo Tolkien
This is the coolest documentary about Tolkien I have seen. It gives all the parts of the great thing this man has done. Because of these dvd's I understand how much Tolkien has influnced the the modern world fantasy fiction. I was very happy with The Lord of the Rings disc, which introduced me to Uriah Heep, Yes, and Mostly Autumn. And thank you very much I am quiet happy with their music. It's worth it to watch these once to see Tolkien coolness and once more to see how much he has enlightened the world.

Overview:
The only selling point of this product is probably the several rarely seen video documentary and photos of Tolkien himself and his children. If you are a collector of these, you'll be happy with THE HOBBIT (and only with THE HOBBIT.)

Tolkien Biography:
As you can see from the content, the 5-minute Tolkien biography film is included in all 4 DVDs. It's not too bad; you get the authorities: Tom Shippey, Rayner Unwin, Humphrey Carpenter, and Father John Tolkien. You get to see some Tolkien photos, and hear what must have been said over and over again. So, it's really nothing new. This short film is basically a compilation of interviews that were taken years before, perhaps much earlier, because in the film these gentlemen still have much hair:) If you have the movie DVDs, they would appear much different.

Main films:
The main films in each DVD are like a walk-through summary of the book. You get 5 "Tolkien historians" explaining the
"significance" of why Tolkien wrote this or that. But this is ultimately boring and has nothing you've never heard of. (If you have the movie DVDs, you have heard enough. And if you have seen "Beyond the Movie" from National Geographic and hated those historians, then you'll hate these guys as well.)

The Hildebrandt Brothers:
The WORST thing about the DVDs is definitely the Hildebrant Brothers (some artists like Alan Lee) talking about their paintings. The interviews are taken indoor with the old brothers sitting next to each other on a couch, and when they talk they are just constantly interrupting each other (ie: "yeah, you know, yeah, right, you know?"), and all you get is just some annoying mindless rumbling!! Terribly conducted presentation.

Muisc of Middle-earth:
The less annoying material is the music performance by a band called "Mostly Autumn". It's mostly instrucmental, except for ROTK, inspired by Middle-earth, recorded live in a mini-concert in 2001 in London.

Conclusion:
Whether you are a newbie looking for insights, or a collector of Tolkien documentary, just get THE HOBBIT DVD and you'll be happy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars National Geographic Deserves More Credit
National Geographic is the best company for geography lovers like myself. National Geographic takes us in life-risking settings in real places all around the four corners of our world. A lot of children and adults still don't even know that there is a National Geographic. And to see that only one person reveiwed this exellent set of spellbounding places frightens me. People should take National Geographic more seriously and start respecting the people who make these features. For this collection, the camera angles inside the films are exellent. The cameramen and photographers are obviously professionals. If you want your child to start liking geography or learn something while watching television at the same time this is just for you. If you child dosn't like experiencing it by watching the movies they can learn by playing fun and educational games and quizes as special features. This is a must have collection. It is quite expensive, but it is worth the money.

Bring home this special three DVD collection featuring the Ancient Rome and the thrills of the Colosseum.Discs 1 and 2 feature the award-winning program Rome: Power & Glory. For over a thousand years, Rome was the center of the known world. One of the most glorious empires in history, she brought to her subjects a common language , shared culture, and - for some - wealth beyond imagination. But nothing lasts forever.War, barbarian attacks, and moral decay eventually took their toll and the empire slowly began to crumble. This six part series presents the complete history of Rome, from its primitive beginnings, to the height of its glory to its eventual decline, as well as its legacies today.Filmed in 10 countries, Rome: Power and Glory combines location footage of ancient monuments, detailed re-enactments, period art and writings, and insights from scholars and public figures to bring the ancient world to life. And Disc 3 features the hugely popular Gladiators: Bloodsport of the Colosseum. The Roman Colosseum was the setting for more terror, agony and horror than has ever been witnessed anywhere. Emperor Trajan gave one set of games that lasted 122 days, during which 11,000 people and 10,000 wild beasts were killed. Often the fresh blood of gladiators was used as a cure for epilepsy. It was also considered a good luck charm for brides-to-be to dip their combs in gladiator’s blood. Who were the gladiators? Where did they come from? How did they live? This fascinating video follows gladiators through their training, choice of costumes, weapons and style of combat to their rise to stardom and their inevitable violent death. So popular did some gladiators become that many Roman women were prepared to give anything to meet and be with the idol they worshiped. With beautifully shot footage of reenactors, Civil War Combatillustrates aspects of four particular Civil War battles that are rightfullyconsidered legendary. Filmed on location, the reenactors depict the violentmayhem of the hornet's nest at Shiloh, the valiant charge on the sunken road atAntietam, the carnage in the wheat field at Gettysburg, and the brutal fightingat Cold Harbor. Produced by the History Channel, the episodes all benefitfrom insightful appearances by historians as well as rangers from the NationalPark Service. The format of putting the focus on specific points of action inlarger battles allows for narratives about specific soldiers and commanders, inboth the Union and Confederate ranks, to develop. For instance, the segment onAntietam profiles commanders and individual soldiers from the Union's IrishBrigade and the Alabama regiment they charged during some of the most violentaction of the entire war. The Civil War reenactors provide a credible look athow the war must have appeared to participants (though purists will note thatsome of the reenactors appear too clean and too well fed to have been marchingbehind Robert E. Lee). The discussions of strategy and the importance of theevents depicted, combined with the uniformly excellent cinematography, make thisan entertaining and enlightening look at critical events of the Civil War. --Robert J. 3-0 out of 5 stars A unique approach to Civil War documentary
This series of four documentaries are different from most Civil War films in that they highlight specific points of four battles, whereas most documentaries are content simply to provide an overview of the battle itself. Because of this, each episode contains many little-known facts about the battles of Antietam, Cold Harbor, Shiloh, and Gettysburg. And, at an hour long (more or less), they are not excessively long.

The highlights from each of the battles are interesting, but probably only so for someone interested in the war. Watching an hour-long reenactment of the wheat field at Gettysburg is probably meaningless without at least some appreciation of what was happening at the other parts of the battle. Anyone who studies the Civil War closely will appreciate these little-known facts, but casual viewers may find it a bit much.

In addition to its narrow scope, these four documentaries are riddled with errors that should have been obvious to the folks at the History Channel. For example, saying General Grant was in charge of the Union Army at Gettysburg is just plain false, as any amateur historian should know. These erroes detract much from the reliability of the accounts.

Despite these two setbacks, this is a noteworthy documentary, worth your time at least to check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Civil War battle history comes to life...
The premise with this History Channel series is to tell specific battle history while showing (through re-enactment) what the engagements really looked like...and this DVD set hits the ball right out of the park! Watching the battles at Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh and (my favorite) Cold Harbor on the actual battlefield is phenominal...it really adds so much to the narration that you actually get the "feel" of being right in the middle of the conflict. Each battle covers sufficient detail that the story of the "everyday" soldier gets told along with much "new" information that makes this DVD unique (for example...on the Fredricksburg episode, the little known story of the Confederate private who risks life and limb by going onto the battlefield to help the injured is a featured part of the story but these are details that I couldn't find in books from Foote, Catton or the excellent volume on Fredricksburg by George Rable). The narration also includes "expert" analysis from noted historians and authors (Gordon Rhea in the trenches at Cold Harbor...) that add additional perspective to the storyline. The battle stories are about 1 hour long and each stands on it's own so that you can stop at reasonable intervals without missing anything. Overall this is essential Civil War viewing for the historian but still presents itself well enough for the general viewer so that all viewers should get great enjoyment from watching...highest recommendation!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST CIVIL WAR DOCUMENTRY
Look this is a dvd that not only is boring and tells you words but it gives you the front seat in the battle scene the reanactment is very realistic with blood moans gunshots are acurate. It's the best buy if u don't want to fall and sleep and watch something good buy this and I am a Civil War historian who has studied the war for 10 years so I know what is accurate and what is not.

3-0 out of 5 stars so so
Not a particualarly interesting or information packed video set.
If you are a die hard historian of that era or particularly the civil war, then not much will dissuade you from getting it and you may learn something you didn't know. If you want to learn about the civil war in general and you aren't a scholar, stick to Ken Burns The Civil War.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic Content.
The blood is a little fake and the actors are certainly not professional, but their portrayal of these great battles is still a gripping tale with plenty of action. They bring to life many of officers and men who fought in the campaigns and you will find yourself getting wrapped up in their suffering and dying. Although they focus mainly on certain aspects of each battle and not the full scope of the conflict, the stories are good and well worth watching. I highly recommend the set to anyone interested in the history of our Civil War. ... Read more

This enthralling History Channel production looks at both the origins and current state of organized crime in Sicily, Russia, Colombia, India, and China. The series of five shows is thoroughly researched and beautifully put together, clearly elucidating the complex sociological roots that gave rise to today's cartels. Such fascinating topics as Russian prison tattoos and the ancient Indian Thug cult are discussed along the way. Though the producers don't shy away from pointing out governmental missteps that have inadvertently assisted in the rise of organized crime, the series comes down firmly on the side of law and order, and is careful to show the ruthlessness and brutality of the black market. The only hitches in the series come in the form of quick repetitions of information (that once followed commercial breaks), but these are only occasionally noticeable. Though densely informative, The World History of Organized Crime never becomes dull or dry--indeed, once you start watching it, it's almost impossible to stop. --Ali Davis ... Read more

This The Big Picture Box contains five IMAX documentaries:

The Discoverers
Originally filmed in IMAX format, The Discoverers features some astoundingly spectacular footage all centering around the act of discovery. The story of the great navigator Ferdinand Magellan's search for a passage tothe Pacific is presented with film of spectacular sunsets and scenery, and a visit to a re-creation of Sir Isaac Newton's laboratory while he refracts light with lamps and prisms is equally beautiful. The various vignettes, which range from a child and her father discovering paintings of bison painted on cave ceilings thousands of years ago to a scientist on a team analyzing data sent back from a probe sent to the planet Venus, don't proceed in a linear path. But that's the whole idea. The production was inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Discoverers by Daniel J. Boorstin, and the goal was to put the viewer alongside those who explore the unknown as they experience the joyous moments of discovery. There is some serious science presented in the course of the film, but fear not, it's all done in a highly entertaining manner. Simply sit back and immerseyourself in the utterly gorgeous cinematography. --Robert J. McNamara

The Living Sea
The films from IMAX have come to be known for their cutting-edge cinematography. They don't disappoint with The Living Sea, an Academy Award-nominated documentary exploring exotic marine locales. Using dizzying aerial and time-lapse footage, they provide underwater imagery usually accessible only while wearing fins and a mask. From heavy-surf Coast Guard drills off the coast of Oregon to jellyfish in Palau to North Atlantic humpback whales, veteran IMAX cameraman and director Greg MacGillivray takes viewers on a vivid journey into some of the world's most breathtaking environments and shows us some of the rarest and strangest marine life. Ten years from conception to finished product, this documentary's intended message is the importance of protecting the "world ocean" by displaying its wild beauty and diversity.

The Living Sea does an excellent job of showcasing the more visually satisfying aspects of the sea (standout footage includes schools of jellyfish performing a graceful migratory dance and a giant cuttlefish changing brilliant colors for the purpose of camouflage), although ultimately it fails to shed much light on the hows, whys, and urgency of marine conservation. However, despite the short running time (unfortunately characteristic of IMAX productions) and a soundtrack that only true Sting fans will fully appreciate, this film proves to be a remarkable treat for the eyes and is sure to elicit heartfelt oohs and aahs from anyone who loves the sea. --Ed Noble

Dolphins
Believe it or not, an IMAX film can make the transition to video perfectly well. It might not be three stories tall, but Dolphins is still a lovely, larger-than-life exploration of these strangely intelligent creatures. Visit the Bahamas, Argentina, and beyond to see different varieties (like the graceful duskies) play and hunt. Pierce Brosnan's narration and Sting's music fill the water with sound and add counterpoint to the dolphin's shrill cries; the film is an overwhelming experience even in the living room. Two short features follow the main attraction: see behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Dolphins as the enormous IMAX camera follows the sleek, gorgeous beasts, and learn some hard facts about marine science including how dolphins fit into their complex environment and why their numbers are at risk. Few nature films bear repeat viewing as well as this one--new details leap out at the audience each time. --Rob Lightner

Magic of Flight
Fly with the U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels demonstration squadron in the breathtaking documentary The Magic of Flight, which explains the basic principles of what enables airplanes (and birds) to fly, what creates lift, how planes maneuver, how planes land again. Going back to the Wright Brothers' experiments at Kitty Hawk, the documentary explores how the intrepid bicycle makers ruminated on the elements of flight for many an hour before even attempting to assemble their first aircraft. The Blue Angels put into action the discoveries made by the Wright Brothers, as they make their selections, train, and perform.

Pilots push their high-performance fighter planes through difficult but graceful maneuvers for amazed audiences, demonstrating where the state of the art really lies for 21st-century flying. For all the skills of the pilots, however, the most astonishing part of the video would have to be the camera work, with cameras mounted on the planes' bellies, noses, and cockpits to give an up-close view of what the machines are really capable of doing. Planes fly an arm's length apart during maneuvers where the slightest misstep would mean certain catastrophe. The Magic of Flight does indeed go a long way toward capturing the wonder of flying, with spectacular camera work, editing, and production. --Jerry Renshaw

Stormchasers
The power of tornadoes, hurricanes, hailstorms, and other severe weather serve as a reminder that, despite technological advances, there are elements of nature that still have us at their mercy. Stormchasers follows the meteorologists who put their lives in danger to chart and research severe storms. Scientists drive hundreds of miles per day to chase down tornadoes in the Midwest, lingering until the last possible second when they actually encounter a twister. Weather Service personnel send an airplane through the middle of Hurricane Emily, with everything that can be shaken loose inside the plane tethered down for the rough ride. The "making of" segment of Stormchasers documents the crew's hair-raising experiences as they placed themselves directly in the path of danger and doubted their own sanity for doing so. Interestingly, the filmmakers were forced to manufacture a monsoon when shooting in India; the results were convincing indeed. Originally shot in large format for IMAX theaters, Stormchasers gives the formation of menacing storms a beautifully lyrical quality and goes a long way toward explaining the weather phenomena that shape our lives. --Jerry Renshaw ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is Why I have a Home Theater System...
IMAX quality at its very best! These five masterpieces directed by MacGillivray are beautifully done documentaries that the whole family will certainly enjoy. The collection of DOLPHINS, THE LIVING SEA, THE MAGIC OF FLIGHT, STORMCHASERS, and THE DISCOVERERS provides something for everyone. If you enjoy nature, life and technology, you will love them all. Just as fabulous as each feature, each disc includes 'The Making of...' sequence that is as captivating than the feature itself! The many hours of filming to get the perfect shots are evident form the behind the scenes action. Many of the feature shots required technologic advances that had to be developed to capture the images. The commentary by Greg MacGillivray is both humorous and interesting. Other extras only add to the family value of this collection. I viewed this series on a 36 inch Sony 'WEGA' TV using the Onkyo DR-S2.0 DVD Receiver. DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound are both available on these discs. I have tried both and recommend the same, as there are differences in the audio. I have no particular preference as both are superior. The audio is simply spectacular with narrators like Selleck, Streep, Brosnan, and Holbrook. Especially spectacular is the music in The Living Sea that was provided by Sting. The music is worth playing alone!! The picture is 4:3 format with little artifact from the original film. While never being able to reproduce the Imax scale, these crisp, detailed images have more resoultion than you home screen can handle. A superior collection of extraordinary documentaries with many extras. Toddlers, teens, and adults will enjoy watching these discs and certainly these will be a treat on your home theater system.

5-0 out of 5 stars imax and dvd: AWESOME
Wow, this dvd is one of the greatest. I've always enjoyed imax movies and now i can watch them whenever i want on dvd. This dvd has five movies on it;"The Living Sea," "The Discoverers," "Stormchasers," "The Magic of Flight," and "Dolphins: The Ride." All of these movies are great, but my favorites are "The Living Sea," and "dolphins:the ride" The first, "the living seas" takes you on a tour through the ocean. Through stunning pictures and breath taking sound it shows you the world of those creatures that live under the sea. This movie is a true great, and one of the best imax films. My next favorite is "stormchasers" this movie takes you to the great plains and shows you the twister. It follows groups of ordinary people doing unordinary things, chasing tornados. And finally my last favorite is "dolpins: the ride" Ive always loved dolpins, but imax and the voice of pierce brosnan help make this documentary a true master piece. I highly recommend this dvd. It is truly wonderful and a great addition to your dvd collection. ... Read more

Several of rock and pop music's best and most important earlysongwriters, along with some stellar performers, are profiled on TheSongmakers Collection, a two-DVD set culled from five separate episodes ofthe A&E Network's Biography series. The centerpiece is "Hitmakers: TheTeens Who Stole Pop Music," a 90-minute documentary about the many writers whoworked side-by-side in New York's legendary Brill Building in the '50s and '60s.It's a fascinating story, featuring duos like Carole King and Gerry Goffin,Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, and Neil Sedaka andHoward Greenfield, nearly all of them Jewish kids from Brooklyn who were at easewriting classic tunes for black and white artists alike. The tale is told instandard documentary style, via interviews past and present, photos, extensivefilm footage, and, of course, lots of music.

The remaining programs, all about 40 minutes in length, concentrate onindividual artists or partners (inevitably, some of the same footage appearsseveral times). Singer Dionne Warwick, best known for her interpretations of Burt Bacharach-Hal David material(and maybe for the Psychic Friends Network), is profiled in Volume One. Thethree features in Volume Two focus on the life and loves of Bacharach, theclassically trained composer of so many pop standards; on Jerry Leiber and MikeStoller, dubbed "the fathers of rock & roll songwriting" for their work witheveryone from Big Mama Thornton and the Coasters to Elvis Presley and Peggy Lee;and on Bobby Darin, the ultra-versatile, swingin' talent who lived with theprescience of an early death due to heart problems (he died at 37). 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good stuff!
I bought this at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland this weekend. (It's the source, per this DVD, of Don Kirschner's greatest regret, that being that he hasn't been enshrined there. He should be, and would be if he was more popular amongst his peers, but I digress...)

The longest piece on this two-disc set has incisive comments by the greats of the Brill Building songwriters (Goffin and King, Greenwich and Barry, Weill and Mann, etc.), as well as rare comments from Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las and many others. It's in must-see territory.

The rest of the pieces on the discs are Biography-style (this being from A&E's Biography unit, after all) shows on Dionne Warwick, Bobby Darin, Burt Bacharach and Lieber & Stoller. All of them are well done, though not as incisive as the centerpiece.

A&E skimps on extras, and they do so here again. A shame, as with decent extras I'd give this one 5 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Appealing documentary series.
This two disc set, which has recently been reduced in price, contains four episodes from the A & E documentary series: "Ancient Mysteries - Myths and Legends", introduced and narrated by Leonard Nimoy.
All the four episodes are stereophonic and about 45~6 minutes in length, and as usual with A & E product, does not contain sub-titles.
The four episodes are:
Camelot ( 1995 - 45'56" ) Good, but with no mention of Avalon.
The Quest for the Holy Grail ( 1995 - 44'48" ) Good, and actually mentions the bloodline of Christ.
Atlantis: The Lost Civilization ( 1995 - 45'58" ) Very good, but glosses over Atlantis' predecessor Lemuria.
Dragons ( 1997 - 45'28" ) Okay + ; missed mentioning how something this supposedly large and heavier than air could fly... ( Internal gas chambers in their bodies similar to an internal hot air ballon, plus hollow bones to lessen weight ).

Great Blunders of WWII presents exactly that, the great errors of judgement that both the Allied and Axis forces made during the course of World War II. Broken down into 25-minute segments, this work covers some ofthe pivotal moments of the war, such as the Battle of Midway, Stalingrad, and the Battle of the Bulge, and how they contributed to the ultimate defeat of the Axis powers. History enthusiasts will already be familiar with the topics covered here, and the length of each segment hinders any in-depth exploration of the subjects, but the archival footage, some of it in color, is staggering. History Channel always produces great shows.. this one is excellent. However, I don't see why anyone would spend money to purchase this on DVD when it reruns so often on TV that you could easily record it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good way to learn WWII history
I learned a lot about World War II history by watching this series. The 2 DVD set consists of several programs that were created by the History Channel, and so each segment does have a definite "made for TV" feel to it. But each segment is also a nice easy-to-watch bitesize piece of history. I had hoped Netflix had this for rent, but since they didn't I ended up buying it. Unfortunately, it's the kind of thing I'll probably only watch once. But it's definitely entertaining and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars The story changes by coincidence.
A fantastic video which shows you what strange coincidence contributes to change to history of the world. Generals to privates - people at the right place at the right moment who fortunately made the correct interpretations of what they thought they new at historical moments. Everybody should watch these videos which shows us what could have happened if these persons have made other descicions.

I'm the One That I Want
This concert film becomes gripping, moving, and triumphantly funny when Margaret Cho stops with the "fag-hag" jokes and gets real in recounting her ill-fated sitcom and its devastating effects on her mental and physical well-being. In the spirit of Richard Pryor talking about his infamous freebasing accident in Live on the Sunset Strip and Julia Sweeney discussing caring for her cancer-stricken brother in God Said, "HA!", Cho's account of her ill-conceived 1994 ABC sitcom All American Girl is victorious, a "you go, girl" call to empowerment. Her happiness at finding mainstream acceptance was short-lived when the network expressed concerns about her weight. A desperately insecure Cho proceeded to lose 30 pounds in a month and wound up in the hospital with kidney failure. Even more humiliating was the special consultant hired to instruct her how to appear "more Asian." Cho recalls receiving a phone call after the show's premiere from an enraged Quentin Tarantino, her then-boyfriend, who screamed at her, "They took your voice!" The capper was when her show was cancelled to make room for The Drew Carey Show ("Because he's so thin," Cho asides). Drink, drugs, and promiscuous sex followed, until Cho gave herself a wake-up call. "I'm not going to die because I failed as someone else," she proclaims. "I'm going to succeed as myself." This is the one Cho's legion of devoted fans want. More sensitive viewers are advised to fast-forward through the raunchier bits.

Notorious C.H.O.
Margaret Cho is an NC-17 woman in a PG-13 world. Very, very little can be quoted from this concert film, as can be expected from a woman who, in the film's empowering conclusion, sounds the rallying cry to live "without restraint." Leave it to Cho to reference September 11 with a joke that is at once profane and respectful. Like Richard Pryor, the Korean-American outlaw comedian has found her niche with concert films that allow her the freedom to be her "actual self." She riffs unabashedly about relationships gone sour and relates her experiences as a sexual Captain Kirk, boldly going where she has never gone before. Notorious, yes, but not as accessible for the uninitiated as her last concert film, I'm the One That I Want, which recounted the rise and fall of her ill-fated sitcom. The faithful, though, won't pass up the chance for a private audience with the diva of the disenfranchised.

Revolution
Margaret Cho does not suffer well the by-now-clichéd expression, "Don't go there." As Cho remarks near the end of her characteristically passionate one-woman show, "I live there. I bought a house there." "There" for Margaret Cho is graphic descriptions of sexual acts, gay and straight, and bodily functions, impersonating a Bangkok sex-show barker, and other matters addressed in her singular frank and explicit style. Two hysterical rants that can be printed here involve being served an Asian Chicken Salad and all the reasons she will never be cast in a period film. Revolution is more fitfully paced than her previous concert films, but she saves the best, and her most righteous anger, for last, when she addresses negative body image, racism, and homophobia. Here, she drops the attitude and gets real. She may be preaching to the converted (a Cho audience is nothing but idolatry), but it is a powerful sermon. Viva Cho!--Donald Liebenson ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars a study in deterioration
it saddens me to see where this once edgy, fresh, new voice in comedy has come. by the time we reach the third film in this trilogy, 'cho revolution', ms. cho's comedy seems to have deteriorated to sophomoric sex talk, abusive expletives, and moments of incoherent ranting, which her audience seems to enjoy less and less as the evening wears on. ms. cho's attitude and humor seem to have grown meaner and angrier and less hopeful over the years. perhaps all the trials and tribulations upon which she built here earlier routines have finally taken their toll. and a women who speaks so often against racism, appears to have adopted the exaggerated, stereotypical mannerisms of the now all too familiar black, urban, 'no you di'n't' cliche. the last third of 'revolution' has a pathetic, apology-in-the-guise-of-justification air about it which only draws attention to the almost sophoclean fall of this once promising young star. i agree with ms. cho that artists must speak the truth. unfortunately, ms. cho's truth has not set her free. sad. very sad. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Amateurs DVD
This dvd had to have been made by amateurs. The commentary got old and there isn't anything new. I never watched each dvd to the end, so I'm not sure it improved.

Some good bits and pieces of information. Nothing you can't learn by just researching on the web or other books. I had to catch myself from falling asleep several times. Repeative as well. Don't waste your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Starts out okay...
...but then gets repetitive and boring. These DVDs feel as though they were made by amateurs. The commentary gets old quickly and there isn't much of anything new to be learnt. I never got to the end of the last DVD so I can't tell if it gets better as you near the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars This set should sleep with the fishes...
Brutal. And I thought Blair Witch Project was the ultimate in nauseum through poor production. There is some decent content in a few of these programs but the production and sound quality are so incredibly bad you'll grow disinterested quickly. During the piece on the Kennedy's involvement with the Mafia, they show the famous clip of the assassination and just as Kennedy is about to get shot, they block out his face (like they do on real life cop shows to protect the identity of the people involved) and insert a re-created scene and then back to more block out footage. Throw in the garbled Jimi Hendrixx music and it just doesn't get any worse. If your used to the slick production of A&E produced Mafia programs, you'll be extremely dissapointed. Don't waste your time. Throw in your worn copy of Goodfellas or the Godfather trilogy and enjoy! ... Read more

Where giant pyramids were a gateway to the afterlife. Where a king's ransom could buy an elaborate 70-day process that would guarantee the eternal preservation of your corpse. 2-0 out of 5 stars Creepy in a Bad Way
Why are cable documentaries so inferior to PBS documentaries?

Every aspect of this documentary is second-rate - from the soundtrack to the stock footage to the writing. In the first episode, mummy footage is non-stop and disgusting. Actor voice-overs of Egyptian cult texts are creepy, often poorly placed, and outright maddening. The writing wanders all over the place and jumbles up the history of ancient Egypt into a mass of hyperbole and useless trivia - it's practically impossible to follow as coherent history.

For teachers, do not buy this for your classes - no child or teenager with even the vaguest hint of ADD will want to watch this for more than 30 seconds.

After the first few screenings, I like to have documentaries as background noise while I'm doing busy work at home. I can't even stand 15 minutes of 'Mummies' as background noise. I've given it two stars because it has SOME value historically.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of an ancient culture
As its title suggests, this collection of four documentaries explores several aspects of the ancient civilization within the context of the Egyptian belief system.
That is not to imply that the scope is overly narrow, it gives a good overview of the culture and explains how the Egyptians obsession with the idea of eternity fueled their rituals of mummification, construction of the pyramids, building of the sphinx, and even the development of hieroglyphics.
The individual episodes may seem to not focus on their main subject and information in some episodes is repeated in others. But these are almost insignificant flaws in an otherwise fascinating documentary.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of the culture surrounding mummies
