The format is that each tape, with one exception, presents five American Presidents lumped together thematically: (1) "Family Ties" looks at those men born to the office: John Quincy Adams, Benjamin Harrison, Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy; (2) "Happenstance" looks at most of Vice-Presidents who became "accidental" Presidents: John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur and Harry Truman; (3) "An Independent Cast of Mind" covers John Adams, Zachary Taylor, Rutherford B. Hayes and Jimmy Carter; (4) "The Professional Politician" covers Martin Van Buren, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln and Lyndon Johnson; (5) "The American Way" features Thomas Jefferson, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and Ronald Reagan; (6) "The World Stage" looks at internationalist presidents: James Monroe, William McKinley, Woodrow Wilson and George Bush; (7)"The Heroic Posture" looks at the war hero Presidents: George Washington, William Henry Harrison, Ulysses Grant and Dwight Eisenhower; (8) "Compromise Choices" examine the administrations of Franklin Pierce, James Garfield, Warren Harding and Gerald Ford; (9) "Expanding Power" covers the imperial presidencies of Andrew Jackson, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Richard Nixon; and (10) "The Balance of "Power" finishes off the series with James Madison, James K. Polk, William Taft and Bill Clinton. It is impossible not to look at this arrangement and not see some obvious liabilities. LBJ does not get dismissed as an "accidental" President while Jefferson ends up representing the "American Way" more than an "Independent Cast of Mind." Putting Jefferson, Coolidge, Hoover, and Reagan in the same category seems rather forced. But this is just quibbling because once you decide not to proceed chronologically through the Presidents it is always going to be open to debate. This format at least sets up some comparisons and contrasts that would engender classroom debate (or you can feel free to quibble in the sanctuary of your own mind). Each program is narrated by Hugh Sidney, who has been the White House correspondent for Time magazine for as long as I can remember. Harvard scholar Richard Neustadt offers up academic preachments on each President, having interviewed most of the living Presidents for their own insights. Whenever possible the actual voices of the Presidents are used, while for the others John Glenn, Walter Cronkite, Morley Safer, Norman Schwarzkopf, and a host of others provide the voices (Bob Dole is Hoover and Colin Powell is Taft). Obviously this series is a godsend for history teachers who can pick and choose particular Presidents to show their class. For example, showing a class the segment on Hoover before getting to the Depression, FDR and the New Deal, would be quite beneficial. I would also think the segments on Buchanan, Cleveland and Ford would be particularly useful. I feel less secure recommending the segments on the more important Presidents since I have to think most textbooks will cover pretty much the same point. "The American President" series helps best when it fills in the gaps of your standard American history textbook. But if that is what you are teaching, then you should certainly invest some time going through this series and seeing what could work for you and your cherubs.
There are criticisms though. The first is that the presentation of Eisenhower is far, far more critical than positive and Eisenhower was a much better President than Neustadt would have us believe. Perhaps his opinion is skewed because he worked for Harry Truman and carries too much bias into his review. Secondly, in a couple of situations, Presidents are placed in the wrong category. JFK's placement in the "Family Ties" category comes to mind since all of the other Presidents in that segment were related to a previous President and JFK is the only one there who was not related to a previous President (had they waited a couple of years to release this, George W. Bush would be an obvious inclusion in this category). Thirdly, Neustadt reveals outright hypocrisy in his views of Nixon and Clinton. In the Nixon segment he claims Nixon's Watergate actions were "unforgivable" while he then gives Bill Clinton a COMPLETE WHITEWASH. This is absolutely inexcusable on Neustadt's part and it harms the integrity of the video series. Still even with those criticisms, I still recommend "The American President" though watch out for Mr. Neustadt's partisan bias (which he only reveals on some Presidents, not all).
"Who were the U.S. presidents? What did they accomplish? What qualities defined them, both as public figures and private men? In this made-for-PBS documentary series, brilliantly adapted from the acclaimed book The American President, these questions and others related to the presidents are answered with rare insight and intimacy". Imagine offering something as a complete history of the Presidency. Does time stand still just because this DVD has been released? I much prefer an individual approach, representing only one President at a time. Not only does this enable a "series" to be updated in a consistent manner, but much more information can be included on each President, creating a much clearer picture of his success/failure while in office. This DVD offers nothing but "Political Fluff". The approach this DVD takes is the equivalent of me claiming to have written the definitive history of the personal computer, ending that history in the year 2000. ... Read more

Amazon.com The five segments focus on a variety of topics, including the initial scattering of Irish people throughout Europe; the forging of an Irish identity throughout the world; the role of women in the expansion of Irish culture and the improvement of Ireland's native economy; the history of Irish Catholic and Protestant populations at home and abroad; and the often startling contrast between the Ireland of myth and memory and modern Ireland as it continues to keep pace with an ever-changing world. Overall, this is an epic account, filled with great pride and great sadness, with horrible crises and magnificent achievements. It's perhaps a bit too dry to achieve any kind of mainstream appeal, but this series should be considered essential viewing for anyone seeking to appreciate the fullness of Irish history and the place of Irish culture in the gene pool of humanity. --Jeff Shannon

Narrated by Danny Aiello, this series delves deep into the lives and personalities of the four main Rat Pack players: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford. Very little is given on Joey Bishop (the 5th member). Along with the rise and fall of these greats and all the troubles in between, we are also treated to some detailed background histories on Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, and Frank Sinatra and Hollywood legend Ava Gardner (Frank's 2nd wife). There's a bit to detail Peter Lawford's life and loves as well and how he gets wrapped up into the Kennedy family and a triangle with Frank. This series is filled with rare footage highlighting many points (and again lows) in each of their careers, and there are many great stories told in interview style by Angie Dickinson, Tony Curtis, Milton Berle, singer Keely Smith and many other legendary singers and actors. Mixed into these interviews are serious and sometimes comical stories on practical jokes, heated tensions, personal issues of the group and spotlights on others that traveled at times with the Rat Pack including mobster Sonny Dimato and Jimmy Durante. The 4 episodes do their best to keep things chronological; however, (and for obvious reasons) do jump around from time to time only to paint a nice solid picture of a story that may span years. The series in total seems to focus primarily on Sinatra, and interlaces his story with the others. All in all an excellent series though Joey Bishop gets the short end of the stick in this biography, but really....it is about Frank, Dean, and Sammy isn't it? However, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of any extras for a DVD. When this show was being produced, you know A&E had tons of more footage, interviews, and information they had to edit out for a hour long episode. With the amount of space on a DVD, they could have easily supplied a photo gallery, a snazzy interactive or animated menu, and I would have loved to seen some un-edited clips of some concerts or 'Summit' highlights, but alas, A&E Biography opted to do just a direct transfer of the VHS episodes to DVD....a shame. It would have been really nice if they included an episode of the Dean Martin show, or a Sinatra special or even filmographies of the Rat Pack players.
The first hour of the documentary shuttles back & forth between chronicling the rise of Las Vegas - the Rat Pack's playground, and the individual careers of each Rat Pack member. A&E spends generous time on each member - the turbulent highs & lows of Frank Sinatra, the easy-does-it success of Dean Martin, the desperate ascension of actor Peter Lawford, and most importantly, the barrier-breaking accomplishments of the multi-talented Sammy Davis, Jr. Only standup comic Joey Bishop is shy of biographical information (he is introduced much later in the documentary when Sinatra began assembling his "summit" crew). As usual with A&E biographies, there is a wealth of rare footage here. Utilizing countless film reels; summit performances, Peter Lawford sitcoms, Martin & Lewis television specials, etc. You see a rare glimpse into the performing life of each member. Also an A&E is custom is the absense of interviews with its biography subjects (everyone but Joey Bishop is dead anyway). Instead, we rely on the funny memories of many Rat Pack insiders & biographers to fill in the details, even though we'll never really get to know about the late-night parties Sinatra held in Las Vegas. Among its interviewees are Sammy Davis' mother, Rat Pack actors Janet Leigh, Tony Curtis and Angie Dickinson, as well as Rat Pack performers Sonny King, Keely Smith, Claude Trenier and Pat Cooper. Milton Berle and Jerry Lewis also provide insights (Lewis is particularly candid about the nature of the public's reception to "the Martin & Lewis magic" - regretfully taking much credit for their audience's delight). Other people interviewed include historians and even bartenders. If you want to see the source of all the magic and are short of patience to settle on HBO's film of the same name, this is your ticket. ... Read more

There are some misinterpretations in this DVD, as some of 2pacs comments come out as seeming racist and we all know he was not. Everybodies in the struggle whether black or white and he's said this many times its unfortunate they didn't include him saying that in the DVD because some parts could really aggrivate some fans. Although, I couldn't have asked for anything more in a DVD, except maybe some Audio made by Pac which is unfortunately missing. However over all this DVD is worth picking up. Thanks to QD3 and everyone involved for putting this together for us, the fans.

The presentation is rather dry, and the video footage can be somewhat repetitive. But if you're interested in early 20th-century European occultism and its contribution, however slight, to the rise of Nazi Germany, this is as good a source of information as there is, apart from Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke's book The Occult Roots of Nazism.
Well some would say they knew all about it and that, and this film is just a glossy version with stock footage. OK, find me a film on the subject that is not glossy and uses unique footage. If you really have more than a passing interest then it is book time, such as "The Occult Roots of Nazism" ISBN: 0814730604. For the most part this film covers more than the general public is interested in.
This is a difficult video to review because its premise is flawed from the get go: there is no occult associated with Hitler and there never was. The people chosen to be interviewed in this unintentionally amusing documentary are (...) of the first order. None are respected, noted or competent historians, they are pop writers who believe in errant nonsense. What types of nonsense, you ask? I shall tell you: they believe that when Hitler was a young man living in Vienna, he stumbled upon a spear located in a local museum. The spear infused the young artist with mythical and evil "powers." Yeah, right... and I was abucted yesterday by Martians and taken to outer space. Only the most gullible [viewer] could believe anything in this childish video. Errors of the most fundamental nature abound: Hitler did not emigrate to Munich in 1912, but in 1913; Dietrich Eckart did not die in 1945, Hitler did not meet Eva Braun in 1933... the list is endless. As a laugh this might be useful, as history it is unreliable and puerile in the extreme.
