2-0 out of 5 stars You won't even recognize half of these characters
12 discs featuring cartoons from the following shows:

Popeye
Tom & Jerry
Betty Boop
Three Stooges
Little Audrey
Little Lulu
Heckle and Jeckle
Molly Moo Cow
Toonerville Trolley
Mutt & Jeff
Baby Huey

I had never even heard of half of these cartoons, most of which I was only familiar with from the Harvey digest magazines I read as a kid. It appears that a lot of these episodes and cartoons have never even been released, with good reason: they're just not very funny.

Unless you remember all of these characters and want to revisit them, I would avoid this collection. The only real cartoon worth seeing on this set is Tom and Jerry. ... Read more

Toy Story
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked aboutlate into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces-- we smile at the spell it puts us under and are refreshed, and nary a word needsto be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "moviemagic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer-animationfeature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Storylooks intriguing, reawakening the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts(namely Knickknack and Tin Toy) illustrate not only a technicalbrilliance but also a great sense of humor--one in which the pun is alwaysintended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animatorsecond, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney. Lasseter's story isuniversal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? CowboyWoody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm theother toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--thebirthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger BuzzLightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has acrucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy.Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercialfor the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores withperfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and WallaceShawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar® for"the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possiblethe first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie isgreat.

A Bug's Life
There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came upwith the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their secondfeature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye, but Pixar's targetis so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible.Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998(Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced byDavid Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colonyunfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (leadby Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentallydestroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers, he decides to look forhelp ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis- Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--ahearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunatelythey are just traveling performers afraid of conflict. As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired.Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybug, JoeRanft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick bug, andMichael McShane as a pair of unintelligible pillbugs. The scene-stealer isAtta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big sweetspot for Flik. More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug'sLife still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise of the villain. However, the film--a giant worldwide hit--will be remembered for its mostcreative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-actioncomedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes arecontained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history rightalong with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandyinvasion in Saving Private Ryan.

Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar conjure up anotherentertainment for all ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angleworthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as wefind out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but alsoa rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takesWoody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's othertoys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative andsmile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story. Although the toyslook the same as in the 1995 feature, Pixar shows how much technology hasadvanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, andtwo action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot forkids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, andinspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight asCowgirl Jessie). But, as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakersare storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily betranslated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever.Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. that two otheroutstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, PrincessMononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pixar masterpieces.
All right. I admit it. In my eyes, Pixar can do no wrong. They're four for four as far as I'm concerned.

This 3-pack includes full-screen and letter-boxed versions of their first 3 full-length features: Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Toy Story 2. It doesn't include tons of bonus material like you'd get in a full-blowen collectors's edition, but unless you're a hard-core enthusiast, you probably won't miss anything.

The movies themselves, are magnificent.

The story telling is first rate. Like what one would expect from classical Disney work, they're entertaining to both kids and adults. A bit of everything: engaging stories, clever humor, heart-felt moments, a bit of action and suspense, and characters that you get attached to.

And Pixar is the benchmark against which all other computer animation is measured. Meanwhile, Pixar manages a artful balance between the realism of computer animation and the expressiveness found in cel animation.

I look forward to the next boxed set, of Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, and whatever they have next up their sleeves.

5-0 out of 5 stars few bells and whistles, but a great value!
I was a little bit skeptical about this great buy, but it's true. You get three great Pixar movies in DVD format for a great price. On each disc you can choose widescreen or fullscreen viewing, you can get English captions, there are sneak peeks and outtakes, and each has an extra cartoon: Toy Story carries the entertaining short "Tin Toy" (with a remarkably horrid looking infant); Toy Story 2 contains a Luxo, Jr. cartoon; and A Bug's Life has "Geri's Game".

As another reviewer has stated, if it is the special features you crave then this is not the collection for you; however, if you just want to watch the films and don't care about the extras, this is a remarkable value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three of the Best Cartoons Ever
These three movies are three of the best cartoons ever made. The first Toy Story began Pixar's move into the mainstream and it was a groundbreaker. A Bug's Life will feel a bit more like a children's story compared with the Toy Storys, but, though it may be Pixar's worst, it is better than all of Disney's modern cartoons with the exception of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. Toy Story 2 is Pixar's best (Finding Nemo a close second). I've never laughed as hard as I had throughout the story. The comedic moments were perfectly timed. The references to other movies were perfect. And as the movie progressed, the more you laughed. Not only that, but it also had an actual serious message, with a moment in the middle that made you think rather than just laugh.

Truly perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once, twice, three times a classic....
WOW, WOW , and WOW! Not one dud here. Beautiful work done by the artists who re-defined Disney. Pixar is a group of geniouses who dredge up the worst things in a human psyche and turn them into understandable, funny, and very real imaginary people. The future is pixar. And, Toy Story is their crowning achievement. There is no better way to review these than to simply say...everyone must own this three-pack!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
I love this bundle for my 3 yr old. He loves Buzz and this 3 pack gives him a choice of what to watch. Kids don't need any extras and it saves you money to buy the bundle. You get three great movies at one low price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this DVD set!
This is a great DVD set containing some of the best Rankin and Bass Christmas specials that I remember from childhood, on one disc there is Santa Claus Is Comin' Town and The Little Drummer Boy, I love both specials but my favorite is The Little Drummer, it's hard to keep a dry eye watching that story especially at the last scenes of the story. Another disc contains the very good classic Frosty The Snowman which is so cute and endearing and it also contains the sequel Frosty's Return which is not as good but still enjoyable. Well I admit that the first time I watched Frosty's Return on TV I didn't like it because it really has nothing to do with the original but I just watched it again and this time I gave it a chance and yes though I still don't think it's as good as the original I did allow myself to enjoy it in it's on right! It would've been nice though if they had also included Frosty's Winter Wonderland which was the first sequel to Frosty The Snowman. The last Disc just contains the fantastic Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer which is a classic and so adorable! It also has some nice extras like a trivia game, etc. So I have enjoyed watching the DVDs in this set and really have no major complaints, just would have liked Frosty's Winter Wonderland included. I do recommend this set it just adds to your Christmas joy. I got this set months ago for my birthday and waited til December to watch them and I'm glad I waited because it just makes it all the more special. In fact I just watched the Christmas specials in this set today.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection of Rankin/Bass Christmas Shows
This is probaly one of the greatest Christmas sets ever created. This collection features these originals: Ruldoph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Frosty Returns, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and the Little Drummer Boy.

The best place to start this set is to start with Rudolph. This disc features quite a few feature. You should start with the introduction by the creator, Arthur Rankin Jr. After that, go on to the show. After the show, you could go to the special features menu and choose to watch any of these features. There is an interactive trivia game. Also, you could see the alternate song "Fame and Fortune." Then there is the original T.V promo, Read Speak patend Audio Captions for the movie, & other golden book titles.

After Ruldoph, head for the Frosty disc. The best place to start is the introduction by Arthur Rankin Jr. Then play the shows. First there is the Frosty the Snowman, then watch Frosty Returns. Then go to the special features menu. Here, there are two features. The first is pencil tests from Frosty the Snowman. The second feature is more golden book titles.

The last disc begins with Santa Clause Is Coming To Town. This show is my favorite. After that, go to the Little Drummer Boy. This could all be done in four and one half hours.

This is a must for anybody that loves these shows. They are in excellent condition, especially sound. I give it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legendary
Just what I've been looking for and all bundled together. Can't ask for much better than that.

I think it really hits you when you're watching these shows with your young children and it hits you that you were in their position a while ago watching with your parents.

These are classics that'll never go away. Thanks for bundling them all up for me :)I wanted all 5 anyways. Just helps a little bit more.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Set!
Wow! Where to start? What a wonderful set! Well lets start with:

Santa Claus is Comin' To Town, an exciting look at how Santa began. Good to put on for young children to help answer those burning Santa questions. At some points, questions are actually asked by children about Santa, which are answered by the narrator Fred Astaire. I really like the character of BurgerMeister MeisterBurger who is one of the evil characters Santa must get past to be able to deliver his presents. The score is wonderful too, my fave being "Put one Foot in front of the Other".

The Little Drummer Boy, which is found on the same disc as Santa Claus is comin to Town is right up there with the tissue factor as another R/B special Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey. This story is about a little boy named Aaron who has had a huge tragedy in his life, bringing him to hate humans. His only friends, therefore, being a camel, donkey and lamb who dance to the beat of his drum. The strange foursome end up being a part of the very first Christmas on that very holy night.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, is probably most R/B fans favourite. The Story based on the song of the same name, follows Rudolph as he battles to gain respect, due to his bright red nose. He is joined by Hermey, one of Santas elves who wants to be a dentist, not an elf, and together decide to be "a couple of misfits". It is narrated by Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman and probably has the best set of songs as a whole out of all the other R/B specials. Plus with so many other great characters, Yukon Cornelious, Abominable, Clarice, Donner and Mrs Donner and of course Santa and Mrs Claus, you can't go wrong.

Frosty the Snowman, although animated and not claymation, is still one of my faves every year. Also based on the song of the same name it follows Frosty's adventures after his birth "Happy Birthday" by a group of school children. In particular, Karen, who gets quite good friends with Frosty and tries to help him from melting. My only complaint, which I think is the same as many, is that it isn't joined by Frosty's Winter Wonderland, the proper sequel. Instead it is joined by Frosty Returns. Now, this isn't a bad effort, but when you are a big fan of R/B and you watch this, it is very dissapointing. The animation is totally different to that of R/B, the characters are all different except for Frosty and when you know there is a great sequel out there, this just doesn't cut it. I probably will watch it very rarely.

I am from Australia, and for some reason, our tv stations stopped playing all these specials that I grew up on. I was really upset, even though now I am in my twenties. Fortunately I ended up finding these through internet search, which of course led me to Amazon. I am so happy that I have these(and others) and enjoy them so much. If you have never tried Rankin/Bass before, please do! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Evolution Begins
This 4-DVD collection consists the following four DVDs: 1. UnXpected Changes, 2. Xplosive Days, 3. X Marks the Spot and 4. Xposing the Truth. All 13 episodes from the first season of the X-MEN: EVOLUTION anmiation series were included. Many of these episodes were done with the aim of establishing the foundation for the X-Men story. Of course, the origins of different mutants are altered slightly from the comics, yet they're acceptable changes needed to be done for a primarily kids-oriented show.

The first few episodes introduced the core of PROFESSOR X's X-Men team. While CYCLOPS, JEAN GREY, STORM and WOLVERINE were already members of the team, the early episodes brought in the likes of NIGHTCRAWLER, SHADOW CAT, ROGUE and SPYKE. Spyke was never a comic character, but coincidentally, he has the powers of the comic character MARROW. The bad guys, like TOAD, AVALANCHE, THE BLOB and QUICKSILVER were also quickly introduced, with MYSTIQUE and MAGNETO secretly forming the BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS to counter Xavier's team.

There're plenty of comic references in the show. The creators of X-Men: Evolution took time to explain the various technical jargons associated with the X-Men. For example, in the episode STRATEGY X, viewers were introduced to the DANGER ROOM and the CEREBRO. In GRIM REMINDER, Wolverine gets a blast from his WEAPON X past. In THE CAULDRON, Magneto's base, known to many as the ASTEROID M, was mentioned. Also, several mutants who do not regularly appear in the show also get their first taste of action, for example, FORGE and HAVOK.

The special features of these DVDs are also interesting. The producers have took pains to include EPISODE INTRODUCTIONS for every single episode found in the DVDs. That means 13 whopping interviews detailing the "whys" and "hows" of the shows. Also included are the trailer to the DVDs, and the following documentaries: 1. The Evolution of X-Men, 2. The Art of X-Men, 3. Tales of X-Men and 4. The X-Men Unmasked.

All in all, this 4-DVDs pack will be a nice addition for X-Men lovers. If you've been following the show in Season 2 and 3, you should already know that the plot will thicken in the later episodes. This 4-pack will allow you to start collecting all the episodes sequentially. Apart from great story-telling and awesome artwork on the animation, the special features on the DVDs also make this 4-pack a worthwhile purchase. A+

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as some say, but not as great either
With the X-Men feature films and the hit Ultimate X-Men comic opening the world of X-Men to new fans, X-Men: Evolution takes the established characters fans have loved for years (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Shadowcat) and puts them as high school students living at Professor Xavier's mansion with Wolverine and Storm as grown up instructors, and a new character named Spyke is introduced as well (whose powers are distinctly similar to that of Marrow, a former X-Men member in the comics). Many longtime fans didn't find the series too likeable because of the way it is presented, and X-Men: Evolution doesn't hold a candle to the early 90's Fox show. Nightcrawler's characterization is terrible, and there's too much teenie bopper type mellow drama going on with high school kids. The animation is decent, but it's not as gritty as the Fox series. The later seasons however, in which beloved characters Gambit and Colossus are introduced (and they do battle with Apocalypse), are much better than the episodes contained on these discs, but all in all I'd stick with the Fox series anyday.

1-0 out of 5 stars Evolution
Evolution is a very poorly written/animated series that attempts to go off the bases of the first X-Men movie, which was virtually nothing like the comics many of us are used to. I found all of the XMen in high school boring and acting out of character. Not to mention they had half the XMen working for Magneto or weren't seen.
The '90's cartoon was much better, and actually followed most of the storylines. Don't waste your money on XMen Evolution.

5-0 out of 5 stars The series for X-men lovers
Let's face it. The oringinal X-men series is over. Now either we can go watch Spiderman or we can enjoy this show. Spyke is a new character who is Storm's nephew. He's a troublemaker who causes a lot of trouble. Nightcrawler is a joker in this one and Scott is too serious. Rouge after three episodes of wandering around finally joined the X-men. The brotherhood cast was pretty good including Toad, the Blob, Avalanche, and Quiksilver. Mystiche played the principal of there school and she wasn't good about giving the X-men any breaks. This season also brought up the fact of Kurt's past. The season ended with a huge two part battle against Magneto and the X-men. This was a good season and this collection is pretty good.

4-0 out of 5 stars New vs old
I loved the 90's Fox series. That being said, that show was awful. If I got the chance I would buy a box set, but the show was pretty bad. I suppose it's possible that in another ten years I'll look at X-Men Evolution and think it's no good, but for now I'll have to give it a thumbs up. I can understand some fans not liking Evolution because it messes with the story so much, Cyclops in Highschool, while Storm is an adult woman, with Multiple man at about 13 or 14. But if you think you can get past it, or if that doesn't bother you at all, I can promise you, it's worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater comes to DVD!
I love this Hello Kitty gift set! The cartoons are from the 1980's Hello Kitty tv series "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater," which are variations on popular fairy tales/movies. They feature Hello Kitty, My Melody, Tuxedo Sam, Chip, Catnip & Grinder, who are actors in the theatre.

Each DVD contains 5 fairy tales, and each fairy tale is about 10 minutes long and has its own unique take on the familiar stories. They are also changed to be less violent, nicer and more suited for children (water balloon fights instead of guns). This gift set contains all the episodes from the Furry Tale Theater series (that I know exist), except for "How ScrinChip Stole Christmas." (I am a little sad they left one out of the set!)

The quality of the DVD's are more like TV broadcast quality and this is the reason I've given it 4 stars instead of 5. I think they could've enhanced the quality before putting it onto DVD. I already owned the 2 Furry Tale Theater VHS's (Kitty and the Beast, The Wizard of Paws), so I already knew what to expect.

Each of the individual DVD's contained episodes I had not seen on the videos, so, I decided to get this gift set which has 2 extra DVD's not available for sale individually. I am not disappointed! I'm an adult Sanrio collector and I loved seeing these episodes, and I would feel good about letting my children see these too.

The following is the list of the episodes in each DVD:
"Hello Kitty Becomes a Princess" has Kitty and the Beast, Snow White Kitty and the One Dwarf, Sleeping Kitty, CinderKitty, and KittyLocks and the Three Bears.

"Hello Kitty Saves the Day" contains Grinder Genie and the Magic Lamp, Peter Penguin, Tar-Sam of the Jungle, Paws of the Round Table, and Crocodile Penguin.

"Hello Kitty Goes to the Movies" has The Wizard of Paws, K.T. the Kitty Terrestial, Kitty and the Kong, Cat Wars, and Paws- the Great White Dog-Shark.

The following two are the extra DVD's that come in this set:

"Hello Kitty Plays Pretend" contains The Phantom of the Theater, Frankencat, Catula, The Pawed Piper, and Rumpeldogskin.

"Hello Kitty Tells Fairy Tales" has Robin Penguin, Hello Mother Goose, The Ugly Quackling, Pinocchio Penguin, and Little Red Bunny Hood. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The NOT-SO-SPECIAL Edition on DVD!
Arriving in today's post Disney's Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World SE on DVD was a surprise as I had forgotten I had ordered it. The cover is very nice and you can imagine how delighted I was (as a 24 year old male) to have a Belle compact mirror attached to it to add to the excitement.
The DVD loads up showing trailers for Finding Nemo, Stanley March 11th, Lion King SE, Sleeping Beauty SE (with no more news on a release date) as well as the Disney Princess toys/clothing trailer.

The nicely animated view of the castle acts at the animated dvd menu. The animation here features swallows oddly flying through falling snow?! Whatever, it's pretty and marked with SFX as well as a subtle underscoring musical narrative from the feature.
Bonus features include Belle's Delightful Dinner Game which actually transpires to a three screen static hide and seek game. Once completed a series of 8 questions to light eight candles results in footage from the feature of Belle and Beast eating dinner.
Disney's Song Collection is less of a collection as two unmemorable songs which can be played with onscreen lyrics. Yawn.
The truly spectacular thing here is the Enchanted Environment - it's an animated change of season taken from the very beginning of the original Beauty and the Beast - the bit with the parting trees and the waterfall. Birds fly, trees blow, snow falls, icicles form, dappled light penetrates through the forest and mists come and go. The music has a very relaxing non-synth sound and you can toggle between five soundtracks or just the SFX. It is probably the best feature of the disc. I love it.
As for the feature I am actually quite disgusted. The dust grains on the feature are too often and too bad for a DVD SPECIAL EDITION!!! I bought Fritz Lang's Metropolis made in 1927 which has a cleaner presentation. The additional CGI linking each tale really does no favours and merely highlights the varied quality - Belle looks disfigured sometimes due to a lack of continuity in her animation. 22 minutes are added and these are pretty good - again making the rest look inferior.
Sneak peeks allow you to view the aforementioned trailers as well as those for the future Kiki's Delivery Service, Stitch! The Movie and Tuck Everlasting. Nothing we haven't seen before.
Instructions: Angle the the free Belle mirror to catch the reflection of the DVD - to fool yourself into thinking this feature is twice what it it is - and then you'll feel you haven't wasted your money!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why?
Beauty And The Beast - Belle's Magical World is sooo bad its not even posible... how can they get a classic like Beauty And The Beast and turn it into this? the christmas one was bad but not nearly as bad as this... i really dont care if disney likes to make bad sequals and prequals and whatever... but what the heck is this? its not even a disney "sequal" cartoon... its a anime gone bad... its just sick i almost cried when i first saw it! how dare they do this? the cover was nice ...so 1 star for that and half a star for using the name " Beauty And The Beast" wich is a classic and will live on forever. i know its a sequal...or whatever it is, but i have seen plenty of disney sequals like (101 dalmations 2, lion king 2, Peter Pan 2...and little mermaid 2 "but not really") this one has no excuse... its unforgivable!

5-0 out of 5 stars love it
My kids don't watch this every day, because they love to watch all three parts. But they enjoy it, the animation in beautiful and the story lines have a lesson. I don't think you can go wrong with this one. I even love to watch them with my children.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not really a feature.
Many other reviewers have mentioned the lack of consistency between the segments of this "feature" movie. The reason is that "Belle's Magical World" is not really a feature. It is my understanding that three episodes were made for a possible Beauty and the Beast TV series. When it was decided not to go ahead with the idea, rather than bury the animation in the vaults forever, interstitial segments were made to try and cobble the whole thing together for a Direct-to-Video release. And it shows. Considering its origins, the effort is better than might have been expected. The same process was used for Cinderella II, which in my opinion is far worse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney's Done It Again!!! :^ )
I just read some of the reviews for this movie. I must disagree. This is a wonderful movie. It is wrong to be expectant of same or better results from the first movie. This isn't a part III. It's the third movie, but all on it's own. It is targeted for General Audiences of all ages, but mostly aimed towards children. It has a few "short stories". In my opinion, I think it is teaching things to it's young viewers, as well as older audiences of things we may overlook in everyday life. I really think it is worth every penny. I do recommend this movie very much. Please take a chance on it. There are so many new characters, which is a nice touch to it. Take care. ... Read more
