Genesis is the only stinker in this set. It is nothing like the other 3. The Genesis DVD has nice photography, but it does NOT act out the Bible scenes like the other three movies do! Genesis just narrates a reading of the book of Genesis, while showing contemporary desert people going about their daily lives. If you are undecided about buying the whole set, then I would suggest buying at least one of these separately. "Jeremiah" is my favorite, and it really captures the attitude of a humble prophet being persecuted by the wayward Israelites. "Esther" is probably the most accurately told of these three good movies. It is a pretty clear storytelling, where the other movies sometimes change the order of events (but still portray the overall message accurately). "Solomon" covers the biggest chunk of Scripture, retelling many scenes of the life of Solomon and what Solomon wrote in the Bible. I would rate the Genesis movie with 1 star, for being so misleading as to its content. But the other 3 films, Esther, Solomon, and Jeremiah are all 5 star movies! Even with the useless Genesis, the price of this DVD set is still a bit cheaper to buy the three good movies here, at one price, than to buy them one at a time.
Ok, glad I got that off my chest. Buy the box set, use Genesis for a frisbee!
The section devoted to the Queen of Sheba has been embelished, but Viveca A. Fox is ravishing as the queen, and it makes for great drama. Ben Cross ("Chariots of Fire") as this complex character is marvelous, and he is surrounded by a superb supporting cast. Though it's hard to take the nordic air from Max von Sydow (who in 1965 played Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told"), he is nevertheless an aging giant of a man as King David, and France's great Anouk Aimee plays Solomon's mother Bathsheba with vigor, as she holds on to the reins of power with tenacity.
Esther and Jeremiah are also very accurate, but I thought that Genesis was a little slow. It is mainly narative. After the story of the Creation it could have been acted out. ... Read more

A few examples: 1) The narrator says that slavery was "unknown to the New World," and even rather slyly gives the listener the impression (without actually saying so) that slavery might have existed in Europe only, and nowhere else. This is a howler. Amerindians kidnapped and enslaved each other continually, all over the New World. Ditto for Africa and Asia. Actually, at that time, Europe was just about the only place in the world that people had ever questioned the morality of slavery. Before the Europeans invented the crazy idea of individual liberty, slavery was the worldwide norm. 2) The script makes the Christian defeat of the tyrannical Emperor Montezuma out to be an unmitigated tragedy for the happy-go-lucky Amerindians of a utopian indigenous Mexico; though the neighbors of the Aztecs, who took Cortes' side, apparently didn't see it that way. Not revealed is the fact that Montezuma's boys used to collect conquered peoples like human taxes, in order to rip out their still-beating hearts and throw them, spraying blood, down the steps of their temples, at the rate of about a thousand innocent victims a year. Nice. Pisarro was as bad as can be, but Cortes's case isn't that simple. The noble pagans did eat each other, too, by the way, just for the record. Though they lived in such desperate squalor and chronic hunger you can hardly blame them. The truth is, I have to admit that Christianity almost looks wonderful, when you compare it to the grisly, savage sort of stuff it happened to replace, at least in most of the Western hemishpere. But you wouldn't guess that from watching this "documentary."

Amazon.com Narrated by Susan Sarandon, Mythos is Campbell's final work captured on tape while on an academic lecture circuit in the last years of his life. Campbell looks lively and wonderfully at ease in the familiar classroom setting discussing his life's passion. Those enchanted by what The Power of Myth introduced will be deeply satisfied with the epic, academic content of Mythos. --Rob Bracco Reviews (4)

Amazon.com Nukes in Space: Rainbow Bombs Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero Reviews (9)
Nukes In Space has some startling footage of atmospheric nuclear testing which resulted in rainbow auroras and electromagnetic disturbances. It also dives into the space race and how it was connected to the nuclear arms race, very interesting stuff. Atomic Journeys is pretty cool too, but just not quite as exciting. The movie returns to ground zero at several different nuclear sites, and then proceeds to dive into the history of the site. Both Nukes In Space and Atomic Journeys have great DVD extras as well. All in all, this set contain 3 great documentaries with some truly spectacular and frightening footage. All 3 DVDs are presented wonderfully- from the way cool DVD menus to all the extras they packed on, Goldhil Home Media and Peter Kuran have presented a wonderful addition to anyones DVD collection.
1. Trinity & Beyond Trinity & Beyond documents the history of the A-Bomb tests from Atomic Journeys visits numerous US & a few Soviet Test sites and there is plenty of footage of explosions at each site. Nukes In Space deals with among others the Rainbow series of space atom tests - some of which knocked out communications (and worse) in the USA for many hours afterwards. This collection would have gotten five stars from me but for a couple of minor niggles. 1. Particularly in Trinity & Beyond, the DVD could have done with being an extra half-hour longer to allow longer footage of the various A/H-Bomb tests. As it stands some of the sequences appear very hurried. For instance, the footage of the first H-Bomb test (Ivy Mike) is butchered to hell and the superb original soundtrack is ruined, which IMO spoils some of the most spectacular footage of a nuclear test ever shot. And on occasions the original footage of some tests has been dubbed with CGI enhancements which don't enhance but detract from the viewing experience. 2. There is a heavy USA bias and at times a slightly nauseating USA patriotism portrayed in the DVDs. Understandable I suppose considering they are made in the USA! But don't let these gripes put you off buying. This is on the whole a well-made, informative and strangely compelling set of DVDs which contain a lot of atom test footage that has never been shown elsewhere. The collection comes highly recommended!
I live in England and had heard of these DVDs but was never able to find them. I finally found them... and ordered them. Boy was it worth it. The images of the detonations are spectacular, beautiful, and absolutely terrifying. Couple this with superb narration, research, and extra features, and you have probably the best all-round documentary on the history, science and politics of nuclear warfare around.
The material shown on all the discs is remarkably clear, well defined, and visually impressive. The audio for all programs are in Dolby 5.1 surround sound and, believe me, will give your home theater system a serious workout. Each disc also contains a large amount of special features that make this set a very worthwhile value. Trinity And Beyond is the starting point of it all. You are treated to the inside story of our atomic program from it's infant stages at the Trinity site in Alamagordo, New Mexico and continuing on to designing, making, and producing hydrogen thermonuclear weapons. The footage of hydrogen bomb testing in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific ocean is truly astonishing and disturbing both at the same time. Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero is probably the most outstanding of the lot showing dozens of bomb detonations in startling detail. Much footage is relegated to the Nevada Test Site which was openly known in those days to conduct such tests. What wasn't widely known to the public is that subterranean detonations were also performed in Mississippi and Alaska and some other areas. This footage is featured also and is quite unbelievable. One subterranean detonation in Alaska was so large (incredible footage here), it permanently changed the landscape of the surrounding area. Lastly, we have Nukes in Space: The Rainbow Bombs. This is the least interesting of the 3 discs but still has good material to offer. You are shown nuclear detonations, performed by the U.S. and Russia, in our upper atmosphere. Whatever the intentions were by our scientists, this was probably not the best of locations to test atomic weapons especially considering the bombs affected radiation belts around our planet. Pretty scary. If you're interested in the entire history of our atomic program from start to finish, look no farther than here. This is the premier collection that won't ever be matched. Highly recommended to everyone. ... Read more

Questar adds a minimum of "packaging." The slip case holding the set is flimsy weight paperboard and they have "pumped up" the musical entry to each disk, but inside this wrapper, all is as it should be. Questar includes "special features": Rick's "travel tips" segment from the first series is repeated on each disk; a couple of "extras" are not from the Rick Steves series but are well-narrated and very finely photographed items from a generic series. Most "extra" segments are ones that were originally included in the main programs from each series but no harm is done--Questar's order of presenting the material is logical. Each destination is given high-quality treatment: there are no "lesser" destinations since Rick selects ones he has visited and revisited...and continues to enjoy. The material on Turkey, for example, was a real surprise--we discovered a rich and varied set of attractions beginning with Greco-Roman remnants. The scenery is spectacular. Rick and fellow travel-writer, Steve Smith, provide thoughtful, well-written commentary and the whole series illustrates the educational value of open-minded travel to a variety of cultures. You get 20 hours of quality programming (discounting repeats of the travel tips), so the pricing is still reasonable, just as entertainment. If you make use of Rick's insights and tips on places to stay, the set is invaluable.
DVD 1 is The British Isles - visits Ireland, W. Ireland, Dublin, Belfast, Great Britian, London, Edinburgh, N. Wales, Cotswold & Bath. All have extra features not included in the main part and also Rick's back door travel tips. It's very scenic and informative for travel planmning or just arm chair travel. These DVD's are a wealth of information, knowledge and adventure. Each DVD is divided into segments so you can take a break after each part. The how to section gives tips on money exchange rates, language, places to stay, eat, tourist centers, car rental, packing, plus a whole lot more. This set is worth the price and I personally loved it.

The first disc covers The Colosseum, Machu Pichu, Great Wall of China, The Kremlin, Palace of Versailles, The Statue of Liberty, The Eiffel Tower, Mount Rushmore, The Grand Canyon, The Serengeti, The Sahara Desert, Iguazu Falls, The Amazon River, Ayers Rock, and The Himalayas. The second disk covers mysterious and sacred places created by man over the centuries and is really fascinating. This disk includes Stonehenge, The Great Pyramids, Hagia Sophia, Borobudur, St. Peters Basilica (Cathedral), and the Taj Mahal. Also, at the end of the disc, you are treated to a bonus selection titled "Symphony of Wonders" which will show all different locations with a distinctive and very pleasing musical piece which is different for each location. When transported to these different places, you will receive the history of the site, how it was created, and all the knowledge that has been gleaned through the ages about these wonders. The sweeping photograpy and attractive music for each location is just gorgeous and keeps you asking for more as the collection proceeds. The narration during the programs is quite well done and very informative in how it is delivered and it does not drag on or create boredom to the viewer. Some bonuses of the DVD include the added program "Symphony of Wonders", a map showing all the wonders at the various points of the globe, and a very appealing 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound track that makes the discs so much more enjoyable. If you like history and landmarks and breathtaking beauty created by man and nature alike, you will find this set very much to your liking and with an excellent price to boot. Hopefully they will release more sets like this one being that there are so many more wonders in the world to experience.

Product Description Reviews (41)
The movie does have some drawbacks, and since most reviews have focused on the positives, I'm going to briefly mention a couple of negatives: (1) the casting of Mary is just downright poor. The women is way to old and appears more like a grandmother than a mother. After all, Mary was probably only 14-16 years older than Jesus and this puts a lot of things into historical context (albiet, probably not that important for this film); (2) Refering to miracles as such and not as "signs" misses an important point. The word "signs" pointed to something about Christ and John used the Greek equivalent for a reason. The greatest positive for this movie are the post-resurrection appearances. This film, unlike others, takes a good 20 minutes or so and focuses on the appearances of Jesus to his disciples after the crucifixion. I enjoyed these scences very much.
The film is well documented, and the producers are scholars in the subject matter. Further, the voice of Christopher Plummer gives an exemplary power to the narration. I frequently listen to the movie in the background while doing my work. It is well produced. The Gospel of John is the most preferred book in the Gospels. Other movies I recommend: "Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Greatest Story ever told."
In order to believe that Jesus is the Son of God we must posit three things. First, that he has perfect love for mankind. "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to suffer and die for our salvation." Jesus knew from the beginning that death on the cross was his mission and he accepted his mission to the end and forgave his enemies with some of his last words on the cross. Second, Jesus must be the most patient of men. He knows all things including the heart of man. He loved everyone in spite of what they might have done or might do in the future and he offered forgiveness to all right to the end when he said to the good thief that he would see him in paradise that very day. Third, Jesus is completey understanding. He loves uncondtionally and has the highest regard especially for sinners such as the prodigal son. Some might argue that what is required is for the sinner to turn to Jesus for forgiveness and that the scribes and pharisees are confirmed in their sin and are unable to repent. This point of view would be a Calvinistic interpretation of the Gospel and one not warranted by the film under discussion. For God to be God, God must be love and love does not condemn but seeks endlessly to forgive. God's love is so powerful and overwhelming (see The Hound of Heaven) that it is never possible to say that salvation is impossible for anyone. For this film to be accurate, Jesus must be completely without sin -- "one like us in all things but sin." To be strident in tone or impatient in action would be inappropriate for Jesus and the viewer must determine if the director properly demonstrates humility and love in all that Jesus says and does. "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes." Jesus saw rightly with his heart. The viewer must decide if the filmmakers are true to his vision. Highly recommended.
