The definitive British sitcom is almost certainly Are You BeingServed?, which depicts the squabbles, misadventures, and flirtationsof the staff of Grace Brothers department store. The show was originallyconceived as a vehicle for an irreverent junior salesman named Mr. Lucas(Trevor Bannister), but it soon became clear that mocking a socialhierarchy isn't half as funny as taking it all too seriously. The showreally revolves around Mrs. Slocombe (Mollie Sugden), whose wildlychanging hair color and mercurial moods terrorize the rest of the staff, and cheerful but sly Mr. Humphries (the effervescent John Inman), one ofthe first gay characters on television treated with dignity--or at leastno more indignity than anyone else (the show makes some noise about notbeing sure if Mr. Humphries is gay or not, but no one in the audience willhave any question). But the rest of the cast is superb as well: FrankThornton as the elegant but leering floorwalker Capt. Peacock, WendyRichard as the sexy, impish Miss Brahms, Arthur Brough as cantankerous Mr.Grainger (who, sadly, died after the fifth season; other characters took hisposition on the sales staff, but never quite matched up), and NicholasSmith as the self-serving but incompetent manager Mr. Rumbold form a comicensemble that has rarely been equaled.

These characters, written withaffection and played with superb comic dash, endlessly jockey for statusand salary while simultaneously creating an alternative family (the corestructure for any sitcom on either side of the Atlantic). Are You BeingServed? deserves its devoted fan base, who will revel in thiscomprehensive 14-DVD box set (which includes specials about Inman, Sugden, and Richard, as well as other extras). --Bret Fetzer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This one is GREAT!
This is the best collection of scenery I've ever seen!
Do yourself a favor and get one for ALL your friends!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Set!
This 4 DVD set of "America's Most Scenic Drives" is a great addition to any nature enthusiast's collection. If you want to know what America has to offer in this area, you will find it all, including some breathtaking and amazing scenery that you might not've thought of as being in America. To imagine that all of this can easily be accessible by a drive, you will be thrilled to know that you too can cruise these very same scenic roads of America.
Although it would've been nice to watch these DVD's with no narration, it does help to explain what it is that you are looking at, which is quite helpful (Although the narrator's voice does get a little annoying at times).

The fourth bonus DVD is great also, showing timeless American culture and landscapes accompanied by great classic music. A great bonus.

If you are looking to plan a road trip, or to just see where things are in America, this is a great DVD set, and should not be passed up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate $ Value In Scenery
This DVD is quite spectacular. The company who released this is Questar. I was not impresed by their picture quality on a diffrent DVD of "Yosemite" that was an old film. I was leary about purchasing anything again from Questar Inc. untill I decided to buy this DVD."America's Most Scenic Drives" is a great value and I highly suggest those who like scenery with great picture quality to add this on to your collection. This film was produced from a Reader's Digest Collection. THE BEST FEATURE ABOUT THIS DVD IS that it is over 5 HOURS LONG on 4 discs and also includes the ABSOLUTE BEST TRIBUTE ON AMERICA I HAVE EVER SEEN. It is titled "America The Beautiful". Walt Disney did his own 360* format (one of a kind) for Disneyland back in the early 70's. This IS NOT the Disney version at first I was hoping for but Reader's Diget's version is even better than Disney's version. The picture quality is outstanding and top notch next to IMAX production high-definition. This seperate DVD (in the same set) is worth the price alone. "American The Beautiful" features amazing scenery of all the states, includes all our major cities, culture representations along with the absolute best of all America's theme songs representing each state. Such classics are in Dolby 5.1. Includes "New York, New York", "Oaklahoma", "Shenandoah", "This Land Is Our Land", "Take Me Out To The Ball Game", "Old Kentucky Home", "OOl' Man River", "Spirit Of New Orleans", "Chicago", "California Here I Come", John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High", and "America The Beautiful".You cannot get a better value on any scenery DVD out there. Over 5 hours long and the bonus hour long DVD of "America The Beautiful" is a must see!!I have a widescreen 65" projection tv and sometimes have troubles with picture quality when I buy some DVDs because I can see so much. For those with widescreen tv's or big projection tv's, DO NOT be discouraged that this DVD is in full screen format. The picture quality is outstanding! If I was an IMAX producer, I would go to the peoepl who made this version of "America The Beautiful" and see about getting it up on an IMAX screen in IMAX format. Simply amazing!Buy this DVD if you want top notch scenery! This company could've released "AMerica The Beautiful" seperate for the same price. The value you get on this DVD is the best I've seen yet! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 out of 4 are Excellent; Those 3 are worth the price alone!
Three out of these four DVDs are excellent! This is probably the nicest series of Bible stories available. The photography is beautiful, as well as the costumes, props and sets; the acting of the main characters is superb, likeable and believable; and the scripts usually stay very close to the actual Bible verses.

Genesis is the only stinker in this set. It is nothing like the other 3. The Genesis DVD has nice photography, but it does NOT act out the Bible scenes like the other three movies do! Genesis just narrates a reading of the book of Genesis, while showing contemporary desert people going about their daily lives.

If you are undecided about buying the whole set, then I would suggest buying at least one of these separately. "Jeremiah" is my favorite, and it really captures the attitude of a humble prophet being persecuted by the wayward Israelites. "Esther" is probably the most accurately told of these three good movies. It is a pretty clear storytelling, where the other movies sometimes change the order of events (but still portray the overall message accurately). "Solomon" covers the biggest chunk of Scripture, retelling many scenes of the life of Solomon and what Solomon wrote in the Bible.

I would rate the Genesis movie with 1 star, for being so misleading as to its content. But the other 3 films, Esther, Solomon, and Jeremiah are all 5 star movies! Even with the useless Genesis, the price of this DVD set is still a bit cheaper to buy the three good movies here, at one price, than to buy them one at a time.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's ok
I just recently purchased this movie from Amazon.com, and they flashed up a message that the NTSC format may not be playable in Australia. Well, it is playable! All modern VCR's sold in Australia can play (and some can record) NTSC tapes. I have found this very useful as 'Solomon' and the other movies in this series have never been released in Australia.
'Solomon' is a solid, well acted drama (what do you expect, with Ben Cross taking the leading part). I found the first part of the movie quite entertaining, with plenty of action, as old King David's reign comes to an end and two brothers compete for the throne.
With the sequences dealing with the building of the Temple, I felt that little respect was paid to the holiness of the dwelling place of God, or of the Ark of the Covenant. Solomon treated the Holy of Holies with triviality. The inside of the temple walls were covered with gold, so the makers of the set should have paid more attention to detail.
Overall, the movie is well done, with a bit of laid back humour, especially when Solomon greets all his children after a hard day at the 'office'. If you like Biblical dramas, this is worth getting, provided you allow for a bit of 'licence'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Bible movies
Now I have to say that 3 of these movies are absolutly great, but the genesis one is a stinker! Esther, Jeremiah and Soloman are all dramatisations of the Biblical stories with great actors who put in brilliant performances. Genesis is a bunch of weird looking guys just walking around with a boring narration. And the narration does not even match what is on screen half the time. If Ed Wood did a Biblical epic it would look like Genesis!

Ok, glad I got that off my chest. Buy the box set, use Genesis for a frisbee!

5-0 out of 5 stars God made him strong, women made him weak
A romanticized but quite accurate account of what is written in I Kings and II Chronicles, this made-for-television film is exceptional and boasts a brilliant international cast and fabulous settings.
Filmed in Quarzazate, Morocco, the landscapes are wonderful, and the buildings and set decoration, in warm amber shades, are a visual delight, enhanced by the cinematography of Raffaele Mertes. The terrific score by Patrick Williams also adds much to the atmosphere.

The section devoted to the Queen of Sheba has been embelished, but Viveca A. Fox is ravishing as the queen, and it makes for great drama.
The emphasis on this part is to show Solomon's destructive tendencies; women were his weakness, and the rationalizations for his behavior his undoing. From Adam to modern history, it's a common story, but in the case of Solomon, what he gave up for his weakness was God's mighty blessing, and the inheritance he would leave his heirs.

Ben Cross ("Chariots of Fire") as this complex character is marvelous, and he is surrounded by a superb supporting cast. Though it's hard to take the nordic air from Max von Sydow (who in 1965 played Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told"), he is nevertheless an aging giant of a man as King David, and France's great Anouk Aimee plays Solomon's mother Bathsheba with vigor, as she holds on to the reins of power with tenacity.
Other notable performances come from David Suchet (who was so good in the 1998 "The Perfect Murder") as Joab, Ivan Kaye as Solomon's half-brother Adonijah, and Richard Dillane as the laborer who ultimately rules ten of the twelve tribes, Jeroboam. Even the smallest parts are believable, which reflects on the excellent direction by Roger Young.
This is a Bible epic well worth owning for repeated viewing; some of it is poetic, some of it action-packed, often inspiring and thought provoking, and always fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate
Overall these are very accurate. I would like to point out, that many biblical scholars believe that Solomon did in fact marry the queen of Sheba. This is based on the history of the nation of Sheba (aka Ethiopia) and although the Bible dosen't explicitly say that they were married, there is nothing in Scripture that would contradict it. In fact the people of the Ethiopian nation were followers of the Jewish faith, that is why the Ethiopian enuch in Acts is reading from the Old Testament. According to the history of that country Solomon and the queen had a son and he sent priests and Levites to train him in the faith. This isn't somthing that the films makers made up.

Esther and Jeremiah are also very accurate, but I thought that Genesis was a little slow. It is mainly narative. After the story of the Creation it could have been acted out. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars One-Sided Christianity
After sitting through 4 hours of this narrative of Christianity, I felt that much of this story was distorted. Christianity was presented as some tyrannical force bent on destroying its enemies throughout history. While I don't discount the many factual accounts of brutality presented, I also fail to see balance in the presentation. Where does it show the positive values of Christianity in sustaining people's lives during plagues, wars, etc? Where does it present the millions of good works performed by Christians throughout history? These films are all blood and gore and violence and death. This is only one side of the Christian story. Is Mother Theresa even mentioned? No. Also I would like to know who was behind the production of this show. How can I discern the biasses of the individuals who produced it? Who are they? And what was their motive for the show? It certainly does not present Christianity in a positive light at all. One might even call it anti-Christian. If anyone knows who selected the facts and organized this narration, I would appreciate hearing from him/her. Len Bazelak, Sarasota, Fl

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring Your Own Opinions With You
I love DVD's and I love documentaries. This is my favorite DVD of all time. A great peace of work. FYI, I am a Christian.
I realise they only have time to cover each topic once and give one point of view on it. I think they did a great job considering they are covering 2000 years of a religion.
If anyone takes this as a "liberal" view of things, I don't agree. There is no hidden agenda here. I appreciate humans giving a human perspective on things. It was nice not to see a fire and brimstone session.
This is not the word of God. It is a documenary by humans. If you remember that, you will appreciate the work and effort.
This is as good as a documentary can get.
I have a feeling many people bought this looking for some sort of divine inspiration or guidance and then they felt left down thus giving it bad reviews. Also, I think people don't like it when Christianity gets a bad rap (some of the past leaders made mistakes, let's face it, they were human). Just remember, it is a documentary, with human voices and flaws covering humans trying to find their way. It is sometimes beautiful to watch, sometimes horrible.
I thought the narration and music was excellent. I could not be more happy with a product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the price.
It's interesting to read that several reviewers seem to be a bit upset by this video. I find it extremely interesting and helpful, to the point that I have watched it over and over again.
It is intelligently done, especially considering the monumental task of covering two thousand years of history in such a short time. I didn't find it biased at all, and I'm sure that it is as accurate as any other such account could possibly be. I suppose I could understand why it might make fundamentalists a bit nervous.
I happen to be a devout Christian. Whenever anyone tells me that something is inaccurate or not what it should be, that's exactly when I take a look for myself, and indeed that has made my faith stronger, as has this video presentation.

2-0 out of 5 stars Political Correctness at its Worst
I'm not a Christian, but watching this unjust documentary was enough to make feel pity for their side of the case. Though truth be told, it's not as anti-Christian, as it is just childishly anti-Western.

A few examples:

1) The narrator says that slavery was "unknown to the New World," and even rather slyly gives the listener the impression (without actually saying so) that slavery might have existed in Europe only, and nowhere else. This is a howler. Amerindians kidnapped and enslaved each other continually, all over the New World. Ditto for Africa and Asia. Actually, at that time, Europe was just about the only place in the world that people had ever questioned the morality of slavery. Before the Europeans invented the crazy idea of individual liberty, slavery was the worldwide norm.

2) The script makes the Christian defeat of the tyrannical Emperor Montezuma out to be an unmitigated tragedy for the happy-go-lucky Amerindians of a utopian indigenous Mexico; though the neighbors of the Aztecs, who took Cortes' side, apparently didn't see it that way. Not revealed is the fact that Montezuma's boys used to collect conquered peoples like human taxes, in order to rip out their still-beating hearts and throw them, spraying blood, down the steps of their temples, at the rate of about a thousand innocent victims a year. Nice. Pisarro was as bad as can be, but Cortes's case isn't that simple.

The noble pagans did eat each other, too, by the way, just for the record. Though they lived in such desperate squalor and chronic hunger you can hardly blame them.

The truth is, I have to admit that Christianity almost looks wonderful, when you compare it to the grisly, savage sort of stuff it happened to replace, at least in most of the Western hemishpere. But you wouldn't guess that from watching this "documentary."

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not fair and balanced.
...this visual survey of Church history is one-sided and distorted. The "experts" are persons such as those associated with "The Jesus Seminar," who by a vote of the membership have decided that something like 60% - 70% of what is attributed to Jesus in the Gospels was not actually said by Jesus. As they go along, the "experts" profer cynical observations such as the Nicene Creed was formulated by a group of "clerical bureaucrats," and that the main objective of Saint Augustine (who wrote over 400 documents) was to motivate people to avoid the pitfalls of promiscuous sex which plagued his own misspent youth. (As someone who has read a few Augustinian texts, I can assure you there is a lot more to his theology than this particular issue). This production is definitely not a centrist view of the last 2,000 years. It is unfortunately quite inaccurate and biased. I would have to conclude those involved in this effort were more interested in grinding axes than in presenting the truth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD better than an actual lecture
There is so much information in this DVD that I am sorry for the actual persons at the lecture. The DVD is great because you can listen to it many times. Each time you pick up more and more and finally you realize what an incredible journey he takes you through. Robert is a wonderful lecturer, funny, happy, and has a lot to give. It is one of the definite best buys.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeable and quickly delivered
There is no doubt that Mr.Thurman has a vast knowledge of the subjects he lectures about (Tibet and Buddhism), but his information is delivered so excitedly that it is, at times, hard to follow. I found myself rewinding a lot just to let his words seep in. This DVD set is great for those who wish to expand their knowledge of both subjects, but the viewer should also have a pot of coffee handy in order to stay keen enough to follow Thurman's deeply detailed lecture on the history of Tibet and it's form of Buddhism. I would have gladly given this DVD 5 stars if only it were another two hours long, so Thurman could slow down and dive even deeper into his well of knowledge. ... Read more

Clocking in at 10 hours, Mythos presents the great educator Joseph Campbell's vision of humankind's "One Great Story." Since time immemorial, humans have been passing "life's lessons" from generation to generation through their particular society's theology and folklore, or mythologies. According to Campbell, by examining the world's diverse mythologies you will find therein universal themes that are applicable and speak directly to all humankind. In Mythos, Campbell dissects a wide range of the world's mythologies, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism. Rather than pointing out their superficial differences, he accentuates and embraces their similarities. It doesn't matter whether the myths are Greek, Indian, Egyptian, Native American, Judeo-Christian, or Arthurian in origin. Campbell explains it is their intrinsic themes that share a commonality: the trials of the hero, the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, the path to enlightenment, love, struggle, sacrifice, etc.

Narrated by Susan Sarandon, Mythos is Campbell's final work captured on tape while on an academic lecture circuit in the last years of his life. Campbell looks lively and wonderfully at ease in the familiar classroom setting discussing his life's passion. Those enchanted by what The Power of Myth introduced will be deeply satisfied with the epic, academic content of Mythos. --Rob Bracco ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I hate to do this but...
The reason for one star is that this is a randomly abbreviated version of what used to be available on 14-hour VHS series. The tapes showed all the lectures in their entirety - on this DVD we get odd selections here and there intertwined with comments read by Susan Sarandon seated on an uncomfortable sofa. This set omits _all_ the lectures on Western mythology.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a NON-Joseph Campbell foundation sponsored DVD
Although I would be the last person on earth to try and get someone not to buy a Joseph Campbell book, video or dvd, that is exactly what I am asking you to do. I have the video versions of both the eastern and western traditions. They are a welcome adition to my nearly complete collection of Campbell's work's. Yet I must tell you that this Wellspring DVD of Mythos is an unauthorized production. None of the money goes to the Joseph Campbell foundation as it would if it were an authorized production. The Joseph Campbell foundation sent emails to all their members to ask that they do not support piracy of jcf copyrited materials and not buy this DVD version. The Joseph Campbell foundation will be producing an authorized Mythos DVD set shortly.
Thank you, JMassey

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Joe
If you love Joseph Campbell - his gentle spirit - his charming wit - his extensive knowledge - this DVD is heaven (pun intended - see the last episode, on the Tibetan Book of the Dead). In Mythos you view taped lectures with some beautiful visual aids. That's it. There is no interviewer to interrupt him - you hear what Joe intended to say, his jokes and asides included. I love Joe's books, but I love even more to hear his voice and see his wonderful eyes. This DVD is worth watching again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very human look at our beliefs and ourselves
This is a collection of Joseph Campbell's lecture series prior to his death in 1987. It is a no-frills presentation with just the documented lectures of an extraordinary teacher and mind. He humanizes many difficult concepts from psychology to religion while taking you through the process of not only what various people believe, but also how they came to those beliefs. His lectures are inclusive of everything from Carl Jung's psychology to American Indian mysticism to the spectrum of Eastern philosophy. Campbells greatest contribution is that in his work he focused not on the differences between various religions and beliefs, but the fundamental similarities we all share.
The series is very well hosted by Susan Sarandon who prefaces each segment and gives you time to reflect on what it is you've just learned. The production value is limited; as I said this is a collection of documented lectures from the mid-80's with just Campbell on a stage or in front of a projected image. However, for anyone interested in a comprehensive and entertaining view of comparitive psychology and formation of belief systems, this is an exceptional series. ... Read more

Trinity and Beyond
In the salad days of nuclear-weapons testing, the United States detonated 331atomic, hydrogen, and thermonuclear bombs. Many of those explosions appear inTrinity and Beyond, which utilizes a lot of declassified footage, most ofit in color. Standouts include the United States' South Pacific detonation of anatom bomb 90 feet below the water to study the effects on a fleet of ships.Surprise, surprise, they sink! If that wasn't enough, the navy also loaded thedecks with sheep to study the effects of the blast on life forms. Surprise, surprise, they die! Glowing leg of lamb anyone? This film will alternately amuseand horrify you at the rampant irresponsibility of the Soviets and Americans intheir quest for nuclear domination. The Russians have the honor of havingdetonated the largest nuclear bomb ever at a whopping 58 megatons. The Hiroshimabomb was barely a kiloton. Of course, after the U.S. and Russia ceased theiractivities, the Chinese decided to get in on the act. But that's a differentstory for a different documentary. --Kristian St. Clair

Nukes in Space: Rainbow Bombs
Boasting material that was recently declassified, this documentary presents somestartling information about how the United States detonated a number of atomicbombs in space during a top-secret cold war weapons program. The history ofmilitary rockets is detailed, beginning with the Nazi V2 rockets that attackedEngland late in World War II. The problems encountered in America's cold warrocketry program are dramatically illustrated with a film montage of U.S.missiles spectacularly blowing up on their launch pads. After the Sovietslaunched Sputnik, America's resolve to be able to wage war in space stiffened, and test detonations of atomic weapons in space began. The effects of theselittle-known tests were bizarre and included electromagnetic disturbances thatblew fuses in Hawaii while creating beautiful, if dangerous, artificial aurorasthat gave the tests the nickname of the "Rainbow Bombs." Of particular interestin this documentary are tapes of White House meetings at which President John F.Kennedy and his top science and military advisers discussed the atomic tests inspace. The bomb detonations caused radiation problems in space, damagingfledgling communications satellites, and the government eventually called an endto the program. This is an entertaining and very informative look at a piece ofcold war history that seems like vintage science fiction, yet it's all real.--Robert J. McNamara

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bomb Set
This set of 3 documentaries is both visually stunning and very engaging. All 3 movies are very interesting, but i would say that Trinity And Beyond is the coolest of the bunch. It is a little more sweeping than the others, and covers a more broad amount of general information on the history of nuclear weapons. It also has the most actual bomb footage, and the DVD extras- like the 3D short movie on a Nevada test site, are fantastic.

Nukes In Space has some startling footage of atmospheric nuclear testing which resulted in rainbow auroras and electromagnetic disturbances. It also dives into the space race and how it was connected to the nuclear arms race, very interesting stuff. Atomic Journeys is pretty cool too, but just not quite as exciting. The movie returns to ground zero at several different nuclear sites, and then proceeds to dive into the history of the site. Both Nukes In Space and Atomic Journeys have great DVD extras as well.

All in all, this set contain 3 great documentaries with some truly spectacular and frightening footage. All 3 DVDs are presented wonderfully- from the way cool DVD menus to all the extras they packed on, Goldhil Home Media and Peter Kuran have presented a wonderful addition to anyones DVD collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars great documentary
I have only seen TRINITY AND BEYOND straight through recently enough. It is a great movie--fascinating. The background musical score by John Morgan and Bill Stromberg is especially dramatic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended!
If atomic bomb explosions fascinate you, then this is a must-have collection. There are three DVDs:

1. Trinity & Beyond
2. Atomic Journeys
3. Nukes in Space.

Trinity & Beyond documents the history of the A-Bomb tests from
July 16 1945 (Trinity test) to the last atmospheric Test (by China in 1964)

Atomic Journeys visits numerous US & a few Soviet Test sites and there is plenty of footage of explosions at each site.

Nukes In Space deals with among others the Rainbow series of space atom tests - some of which knocked out communications (and worse) in the USA for many hours afterwards.

This collection would have gotten five stars from me but for a couple of minor niggles.

1. Particularly in Trinity & Beyond, the DVD could have done with being an extra half-hour longer to allow longer footage of the various A/H-Bomb tests. As it stands some of the sequences appear very hurried. For instance, the footage of the first H-Bomb test (Ivy Mike) is butchered to hell and the superb original soundtrack is ruined, which IMO spoils some of the most spectacular footage of a nuclear test ever shot. And on occasions the original footage of some tests has been dubbed with CGI enhancements which don't enhance but detract from the viewing experience.

2. There is a heavy USA bias and at times a slightly nauseating USA patriotism portrayed in the DVDs. Understandable I suppose considering they are made in the USA!

But don't let these gripes put you off buying. This is on the whole a well-made, informative and strangely compelling set of DVDs which contain a lot of atom test footage that has never been shown elsewhere. The collection comes highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Viewing
This collection is essential viewing for anyone interested in this subject.

I live in England and had heard of these DVDs but was never able to find them. I finally found them... and ordered them. Boy was it worth it.

The images of the detonations are spectacular, beautiful, and absolutely terrifying. Couple this with superb narration, research, and extra features, and you have probably the best all-round documentary on the history, science and politics of nuclear warfare around.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive story of our atomic weapons program
In what is probably the most dramatic look ever at the U.S. atomic weapons program, the Atomic Bomb Collection is a stunning and oftentimes frightening realization of what man can create. Using declassified footage from government archives, you can now view material never shown or reported to the public.

The material shown on all the discs is remarkably clear, well defined, and visually impressive. The audio for all programs are in Dolby 5.1 surround sound and, believe me, will give your home theater system a serious workout. Each disc also contains a large amount of special features that make this set a very worthwhile value.

Trinity And Beyond is the starting point of it all. You are treated to the inside story of our atomic program from it's infant stages at the Trinity site in Alamagordo, New Mexico and continuing on to designing, making, and producing hydrogen thermonuclear weapons. The footage of hydrogen bomb testing in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific ocean is truly astonishing and disturbing both at the same time.

Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero is probably the most outstanding of the lot showing dozens of bomb detonations in startling detail. Much footage is relegated to the Nevada Test Site which was openly known in those days to conduct such tests. What wasn't widely known to the public is that subterranean detonations were also performed in Mississippi and Alaska and some other areas. This footage is featured also and is quite unbelievable. One subterranean detonation in Alaska was so large (incredible footage here), it permanently changed the landscape of the surrounding area.

Lastly, we have Nukes in Space: The Rainbow Bombs. This is the least interesting of the 3 discs but still has good material to offer. You are shown nuclear detonations, performed by the U.S. and Russia, in our upper atmosphere. Whatever the intentions were by our scientists, this was probably not the best of locations to test atomic weapons especially considering the bombs affected radiation belts around our planet. Pretty scary.

If you're interested in the entire history of our atomic program from start to finish, look no farther than here. This is the premier collection that won't ever be matched. Highly recommended to everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Travel Planner and Souvenir Par Excellence!
My wife and I are very familiar with this series: we watched and taped many of the episodes on cable TV; we used the travel tips and "back door" attractions to plan our own travels and we revisit our tapes frequently, using them a souvenirs. The entire series is friendly, factual, educational and features fine cinematography. All of these virtues have been transferred to the digital medium and...no commercials or breaks for public television fund-raisers! The travel tips, culture, art and history, architecture and scenery are fine, just like the first time around! This time, you can stop the action and still get crisp images of art and architecture.

Questar adds a minimum of "packaging." The slip case holding the set is flimsy weight paperboard and they have "pumped up" the musical entry to each disk, but inside this wrapper, all is as it should be. Questar includes "special features": Rick's "travel tips" segment from the first series is repeated on each disk; a couple of "extras" are not from the Rick Steves series but are well-narrated and very finely photographed items from a generic series. Most "extra" segments are ones that were originally included in the main programs from each series but no harm is done--Questar's order of presenting the material is logical.

Each destination is given high-quality treatment: there are no "lesser" destinations since Rick selects ones he has visited and revisited...and continues to enjoy. The material on Turkey, for example, was a real surprise--we discovered a rich and varied set of attractions beginning with Greco-Roman remnants. The scenery is spectacular.

Rick and fellow travel-writer, Steve Smith, provide thoughtful, well-written commentary and the whole series illustrates the educational value of open-minded travel to a variety of cultures.

You get 20 hours of quality programming (discounting repeats of the travel tips), so the pricing is still reasonable, just as entertainment. If you make use of Rick's insights and tips on places to stay, the set is invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent videos
This is a great selection of Rick Steves shows on DVD, showing some of the msot famous European countries, there are six dvd, Rick Steves makes travel seem easier and exciting and also is interesting how he meets with the locals and explains places history and everything. he makes it fun like a friend is talking to you. This is great for any one who is going to travel or who wants to and is unable too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Rick Steves' Travels in Europe
The best of travels in Europe with Rick Steves is a 6 DVD set. Each DVD is about 3 1/2 hours long.

DVD 1 is The British Isles - visits Ireland, W. Ireland, Dublin, Belfast, Great Britian, London, Edinburgh, N. Wales, Cotswold & Bath.
#2 is Germany, Austria & Switzerland visits Munich, Bavaria, Berlin, Potsdam, Vienna, Danube, Salzburg, the Lake District, Berner Alps & Western Switzerland.

#6 is France visits Burgundy, Provence & the Loire Valley, Dordogne, the French Riviera, Paris, Normandy & Brittany.

All have extra features not included in the main part and also Rick's back door travel tips. It's very scenic and informative for travel planmning or just arm chair travel. These DVD's are a wealth of information, knowledge and adventure. Each DVD is divided into segments so you can take a break after each part. The how to section gives tips on money exchange rates, language, places to stay, eat, tourist centers, car rental, packing, plus a whole lot more. This set is worth the price and I personally loved it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Contents good, Video quality low
Contents were good as advertised, but video quality were real disappointment. I expected DVD level cinematic video quality, but in reality video quality is VHS level. This DVD series is very useful for a tourer who prepares for real travel, but not for a DVD viewer who hopes for DVD quality scenery experience. So be careful! ... Read more

Great American Scenic Railways. That title conjoured up an image for my wife and I that meant we were going to be getting our hands on something we, being a couple who have found we enjoy boat and rail sightseeing excursions, could put to good use as a vacation planning guide. How wrong we were. If, however, you're a rail-fan, Someone whose main focus is trains, train cars, yards, and rails, this set is probably a winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and majestic wonders
Great Wonders of the World is an excellent DVD set brought to us by Readers Digest who is known to publish excellent books and videos and is now in the DVD market. This 2 disc set covers 21 different locales throughout the globe showing man-made and nature-made wonders that are exquisite in so many ways.

The first disc covers The Colosseum, Machu Pichu, Great Wall of China, The Kremlin, Palace of Versailles, The Statue of Liberty, The Eiffel Tower, Mount Rushmore, The Grand Canyon, The Serengeti, The Sahara Desert, Iguazu Falls, The Amazon River, Ayers Rock, and The Himalayas.

The second disk covers mysterious and sacred places created by man over the centuries and is really fascinating. This disk includes Stonehenge, The Great Pyramids, Hagia Sophia, Borobudur, St. Peters Basilica (Cathedral), and the Taj Mahal. Also, at the end of the disc, you are treated to a bonus selection titled "Symphony of Wonders" which will show all different locations with a distinctive and very pleasing musical piece which is different for each location.

When transported to these different places, you will receive the history of the site, how it was created, and all the knowledge that has been gleaned through the ages about these wonders. The sweeping photograpy and attractive music for each location is just gorgeous and keeps you asking for more as the collection proceeds. The narration during the programs is quite well done and very informative in how it is delivered and it does not drag on or create boredom to the viewer.

Some bonuses of the DVD include the added program "Symphony of Wonders", a map showing all the wonders at the various points of the globe, and a very appealing 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound track that makes the discs so much more enjoyable. If you like history and landmarks and breathtaking beauty created by man and nature alike, you will find this set very much to your liking and with an excellent price to boot. Hopefully they will release more sets like this one being that there are so many more wonders in the world to experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Wonders
This is a well done DVD featuring 21 of the world's greatest wonders, both natural and man made. Though the 21 wonders featured in this collection may not all be on everyone's Top 21 list, they are nonetheless all truly outstanding. The photography is first rate, and the narration is both informative and interesting. Not only are you shown pictures of each wonder, but you are given their history and origins, and are shown the various cultures that surround each of these. The musical accompaniment is also nicely done, with the music matching the cultures of the various regions. The bonus feature - Symphony of Wonders - is a nice feature. It is basically a summary of clips from the full DVDs set just to the music, no narration. It's especially good for Americans as it begins and ends with American scenes set to Patriotic music. Overall, a very nice collection well worth the price. ... Read more

Product Description

The Gospel of John, the best-loved of the four Gospels, vividly comes to life in a faithful and powerful dramatization of the Biblical text. The Gospel of John meticulously re-creates the era of Jesus during a tumultuous period that changed the course of history. Starring Henry Ian Cusick as Jesus, and narrated by Christopher Plummer, and with a cast of over 2500, The Gospel of John has been adapted for the screen, word for word, base on the American Bible Society's Good News Bible, by Emmy-nominated John Goldsmith and is directed by acclaimed British director Philip Saville. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Smart Portrayal of Jesus
This movie, based on one of the modern langauage versions of the Gospel of John is fairly accurate and nicly filmed. Christopher Plummer narrates and the actor portraying Jesus does a fine job. The strength of the movie is that while it is filmed on a limited budget, the director, Eric Till, is up to the task of trying to get everything he can out of the sets, sights, and people in the movie.

The movie does have some drawbacks, and since most reviews have focused on the positives, I'm going to briefly mention a couple of negatives: (1) the casting of Mary is just downright poor. The women is way to old and appears more like a grandmother than a mother. After all, Mary was probably only 14-16 years older than Jesus and this puts a lot of things into historical context (albiet, probably not that important for this film); (2) Refering to miracles as such and not as "signs" misses an important point. The word "signs" pointed to something about Christ and John used the Greek equivalent for a reason.

The greatest positive for this movie are the post-resurrection appearances. This film, unlike others, takes a good 20 minutes or so and focuses on the appearances of Jesus to his disciples after the crucifixion. I enjoyed these scences very much.
I recommend this film highly for anyone looking for a decent movie about the life of Christ.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
I believe this is one of the greatest evangelical tools present before us. I recommend it to everyone, and especially to those who are trying to discover the Good News about the life of Jesus.

The film is well documented, and the producers are scholars in the subject matter. Further, the voice of Christopher Plummer gives an exemplary power to the narration. I frequently listen to the movie in the background while doing my work. It is well produced. The Gospel of John is the most preferred book in the Gospels.

Other movies I recommend: "Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Greatest Story ever told."

4-0 out of 5 stars "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly."
The Gospel of John stays close to the original source material but strays from the original in the tone adopted by the director for some of the words Jesus speaks, particularly when dealing with various scribes and pharisees. Some moments do require righteous anger such as when Jesus drives the money changers from the temple. However, when Jesus speaks with the scribes and the pharisees who challenge him for healng on the Sabbath, we can expect him to take a tone more appropriate for his title as rabbi; that is, to point out the errors in the scribes understanding of what is required in the law and to gently lead them toward the truth knowing that argument is futile and beneath him.

In order to believe that Jesus is the Son of God we must posit three things. First, that he has perfect love for mankind. "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son to suffer and die for our salvation." Jesus knew from the beginning that death on the cross was his mission and he accepted his mission to the end and forgave his enemies with some of his last words on the cross.

Second, Jesus must be the most patient of men. He knows all things including the heart of man. He loved everyone in spite of what they might have done or might do in the future and he offered forgiveness to all right to the end when he said to the good thief that he would see him in paradise that very day.

Third, Jesus is completey understanding. He loves uncondtionally and has the highest regard especially for sinners such as the prodigal son. Some might argue that what is required is for the sinner to turn to Jesus for forgiveness and that the scribes and pharisees are confirmed in their sin and are unable to repent. This point of view would be a Calvinistic interpretation of the Gospel and one not warranted by the film under discussion. For God to be God, God must be love and love does not condemn but seeks endlessly to forgive. God's love is so powerful and overwhelming (see The Hound of Heaven) that it is never possible to say that salvation is impossible for anyone.

For this film to be accurate, Jesus must be completely without sin -- "one like us in all things but sin." To be strident in tone or impatient in action would be inappropriate for Jesus and the viewer must determine if the director properly demonstrates humility and love in all that Jesus says and does.

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eyes." Jesus saw rightly with his heart. The viewer must decide if the filmmakers are true to his vision. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL AND MOVING
WHAT A POWERFUL AND MOVING FILM. MADE IN 2003 IT HAD VIRTUALLY GONE UNNOTICED. THERE IS SOMETHING VERY PURE AND GENUINE ABOUT THIS FILM.THIS FILM DOESN'T INSULT THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE VIEWER AS THE MORE RECENT BIG BUDGET HOLLYWOOD FILM THAT DEPICTS THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST WITH ITS GRATUITOUS SCENES OF VIOLENCE. I RENTED THIS DVD AND VIEWED IT WITH MY YOUNG DAUGHTER, AND FELT THAT PEOPLE OF ANY AGE CAN FIND IT INSPIRING.

5-0 out of 5 stars A deeply moving masterpiece.
"The Gospel of John" is one of the best films I seen during the last few years. As a word-for-word interpretation of the gospel from the Good News Bible, TGOJ gives a faithful representation of the Gospel According to John. Henry Ian Cusick, I believe, is one of the best actors ever to play Jesus (ranking in the company of Robert Powell in "Jesus of Nazareth" and "The Passion of the Christ's" Jim Caviezel), and Christopher Plummer's narration is also powerful. I know it's been noted here before, but I'll go ahead and say it again anyway: TGOJ and "The Passion..." make great companion films to each other, with one film focusing on the crucifixion of Jesus and the hours leading up to it, while the other movie focusing on His life, teachings and ministry. Both movies are great, although I would have loved to have seen TGOJ get as much exposure as "The Passion." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Facts and/ or Faith, Don't Miss this !
This series available in dvd (along with Mysteries of the Bible-2-Pack) is the best, objective study of biblical history/archaelogical fact I've ever found. Years ago I bought the entire 3 sets on vhs and was spurred thereafter to search longingly for answers to biblical questionable events.I must repeat,if you're a truth searcher, don't miss this. Comment: the editorial review for this incorrectly describes Mysteries of the Bible-2-pack, giving the same review for both sets...it pays to check the customers reviews

5-0 out of 5 stars John Kay Steele Does Excellent in Portraying Christ!
I saw this on TBN, and i was just surprised that the Actor
that played Jesus Christ actually looked like Christ himself. I really
enjoyed this picture. From all the actors that i have seen
in the past, the one here, John Kay Steele, looks like Christ
even his performance was Magnificent-John Kay Steele played
the Character Beautifully-A Very loving, and Caring Christ...
it was just beautiful. I really would have enjoyed if John
Kay Steele would have played Christ Again in Mel Gibsons Film
The Passion-I think i got that Correct.
Any way, Phenomenal picture, recommend it to All who read this
message. In real life Christ cares for All, no matter the decade, the time
or place, or where one even comes from-Christ just cares/loves You Always & Forever!

1-0 out of 5 stars Jesus Christ Never Existed.
'Life of Jesus, Vol. 1-2' is a famous film some people have seen or at least heard about. Most people fail to realize all of that doesn't matter because Jesus Christ never existed!! Jesus Christ is a mythological figure the church has exploited for hundreds of years and now the film industry has for almost a hundred years. There is absolutely no archeological or historical evidence that Jesus Christ existed. Even if he did exist, it would be highly unlikely he would have received that kind of punishment.
It is a shame that con artists like these filmmakers are using this mythological figure to make millions of dollars. People have to start swaying away from the manipulations of the church and the filmmaking industry and start looking at the hard facts. Jesus Christ and his crucifixion never happened.
