4-0 out of 5 stars Blaxploitation Cheese from Al Adamson!
Here's a slice of '70s Blaxpoitation cheese that manages to pack a sizeable wallop for its miniscule budget. Tough African-American detective Kicks Carter (Timothy Brown) is out to break up a pair of bottom-feeder crooks and stop a guns-for-drugs trade organized by a black mobster improbably named Guido. Along the way there's plenty of clumsily choreographed (and often poorly-lit) fight scenes and shoot-outs, a smattering of sex and nudity (like when Kicks makes sweet love to his TV reporter girlfriend Tanya Boyd), a fair amount of sleaze (like when a woman with a gambling problem is gang-raped by four sweaty redneck card sharps; the fact that this woman resembles a young version of "That '70s Show"'s Debra Jo Rupp only adds to the scene's nastiness) and stilted dialog so awkwardly peppered with jive talk it's obvious the script was written by white people. Still, schlock director Al Adamson is in peak form with this one, keeping the action moving and making sure to hit all the right buttons to please his audience--even including a little bit of lesbian action, again involving our hapless gambling addict. The cast also includes Adamson regulars Russ Tamblyn (who plays a bug-eyed, low-rent mobster named Ziggy) and aging blond bombshell (and Adamson's wife) Regina Carrol. The movie runs out of steam by the final ten minutes, but all in all, "Black Heat" is pretty hot. Just don't be fooled by the updated cover art on the DVD: "Black Heat" is a '70s movie through and through, from Timothy Brown's huge afro down to his crotch-molding, (...) tight jeans.

4-0 out of 5 stars "KICKIN'!"
Black Heat is not as hard to find as one might think. I was in Hollywood video browsing the action section and it jumped off the bottom shelf and kicked me in the shin. It hurt like a muther!

4-0 out of 5 stars So bad it's good!
Yet another pick from classic 1970s blaxploitation. It's definitely not Dolemite, but it had enough action to keep me occupied for all 96 minutes. This one's hard to find in regular video stores. Amazon is about the only place I know that even carries this film. A great addition! ... Read more

At the Jazz Band Ball features rare, archival film clips from1925 to 1933 that showcase a wonderful potpourri of musicians, bandleaders, singers, dancers, and entertainers that characterized the best of the HarlemRenaissance and the Jazz Age. The range of this collection represents early20th-century Americana, from the hometown charm of the Boswell sistersperforming the jazz-scat classic "Heebie Jeebies" to the Al Jolson-like anticsof Charly Wellman's take on "Alabamy Snow." Of course, jazz is the heartbeat ofthis pre-World War II time and it's manifested in many ways. There's the classical sophistication of Paul Whiteman's orchestra rendition of "My OhioHome" with the young trumpet pioneer Bix Beiderbecke, and the elegant andenduring Duke Ellington swinging like mad on "Old Man Blues" with baritonesaxophonist Harry Carney, and an imaginative medley consisting of "The DukeSpeaks Out," the evocative "Black Beauty," and Cotton Club Stomp" in which thelovely dancer Fredi Washington--and the innovative mirror shots--steal the show.

There's also the "Empress of the Blues," Bessie Smith, with her sorrow-songversion of W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues." But Louis Armstrong, the firstmajor jazz improviser and vocalist, is the prince of this era, asevidenced by his down-home trumpet solos, stage charisma, and gravel-like vocals on "I Cover the Waterfront," the fast and furious "Dinah" (as seen on KenBurns's Jazz), and "Tiger Rag." Add the dapper Dorsey Bros. Band, the tap-dance wizardry of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and Ben Burnie's burning bigband treatment of the Harlem Globetrotters' theme "Sweet Georgia Brown" and youknow the exuberance and artistry of this brilliant chapter in American history.--Eugene Holley Jr. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag; For The True Devotee
A nice selection of rare material is undercut by the presentation here. Many films have been poorly framed so that people's heads are cropped - God, it's annoying, did no one look at this before it was released? Audio is generally as good as source material permits. As for the Bix clip - yep, there he (barely) is, in the brass section, FAKING his way through "My Ohio Home" (watch his fingering, it doesn't match the arrangement, and he stops playing before the rest of the section). So this is not the "only sound film document" of Bix playing - he ain't playing. There is no tray insert with any background info or even a track list, and nothing onscreen to indicate what you're watching, so you'll need to have the box handy. Nobody went out of their way to upgrade this for DVD, that's for sure. If you have the VHS, you don't need this. Four stars for material, docked one star for presentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Compliation-look for more
This is an excellent compilation of rare material, and it a must have for the great Boswell Sisters material, the shot of Bix in Whiteman's trumpet section (not soloing as the box says), the "dance contest" with Chick Webb's 1929 band (which released only 1 78), closeups of Duke's 1929 band-Wellman Braud, Sonny Greer, young Harry Carney and Johnny Hodges (soloing on soprano), Freddy Jenkins, Artie Whetsol, Cootie Williams...
Collectors should be warned that the version of St. Louis Blues with Bessie Smith is an edited, truncated version. So is the 1929 Duke Ellington material featuring Fredi Washington, great as all this stuff is. So for more, seek out the whole items, available on other collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Heart of Jazz
What would you rather watch to get a taste of German cabaret in the early '30s, Cabaret (1972) or The Blue Angel (1931)? If you answer the latter you may especially enjoy this interesting compilation that is less polished than many others, especially the big studio productions of later years.

I am especially charmed by two productions that might be at the bottom of others' lists--the dance hall performances by Tessie Maize and Ruby Darby. By modern standards, many of the dancers were too heavy and too unpolished to even point a camera at, but they let us see what an ordinary audience of their times could see, not only the numbers, but the unaffected intimacy of the piece, and their cheer and enengy.

This DVD is like discovering a treasure in a collector's attic. A must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXPERIENCE EXCELLENCE
You will watch this video over and over again and cry for more! Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding clips from the sunset of the golden age of jazz
I think this video is a must have for anyone interested in the 20's jazz world. The short but wonderful Boswell Sisters film is my favorite because I didn't know such a thing existed and I've been fascinated by their scratchy recordings for years. The films of Armstrong,Ellington, and Bessie Smith are the earliest (and only for Smith) examples of them on film.Of coures they are hot and it's the"20's Ellington sound "and LOUIS the soloist .Still I have to say it's only a faint glimmer of a world we can only view as a dream thats ended. The Ben Bernie and Tommy Christian bands are interesting examples of 20's band styles .The dancing varies from bad chorus line to totally amazing. Not every thing on this video is great or even good but if you can relate to it on its own terms its a peek through the veil to something wonderful. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good
If you're looking to hear Robert Johnson's songs, you should probably buy one of the awesome collections availible. As this legend and musical genius has now been dead for 65 years, I'm not sure what the other reviewers were looking for besides other people covering his songs, and talk about his life... that's all we have now. And of course the covers do not outdo him; that would be impossible. But there is some very thoughtful discussion on the life of Robert Johnson and the world he lived in. The discussion with a former classmate is touching, and the covers of his songs by those who knew him (Robert Lockwood Jr., Honeyboy Edwards)and by some of the new delta-blues talent such as Guy Davis, Roy Rogers and especially Alvin Youngblood Heart blew me away. Gov't Mule and Sonny Landreth do some awesome electric renditions of his work. The major let downs are the cuts into interviews and pointless displays of the rock n' roll hall of fame gathering, and also Bob Weir's performance, which is just plain bad. All in all, it is a good film, and it's nice to actually be able to watch people play his music, as we will never be able to see the real thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars HMMMMM HellhOund?
This movie was enjoyable, but not focused on the music of RJ other than as interpreted by others. I don't know where ol' Sam figured that there weren't "name" artists - Sonny Landreth, Gov't Mule, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Peter Green, Guy Davis, and Bob Weir/Rob Wasserman, JLW, Honeyboy.....the list goes on & on. Most performances were great in my opinion - Ian and Desmond are clueless. A considerable portion of the film consists of interviews with persons acquainted with RJ and at one point discusses a mysterious home video that possibly depicts him playing in the streets (wow do they get sidetracked here....). If u like blooz check it out!

3-0 out of 5 stars Neither Fish nor Fowl
If you are looking for a purely performance-oriented DVD, you will probably be disappointed by this disk. Having said this, however, there are some truly outstanding renditions of RJ classics on the disk that make it worth having. Among my favorites are an absolutely incendiary version of "Walkin' Blues" by the under-appreciated slide-master Sonny Landreth (this alone is worth the price of the disk, IMHO), an excellent interpretation of "If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day" by Rory Block and an unfortunately edited/intercut performance of "Love In Vain" by Keb' Mo'. There are also appearances by bigger name acts such as Warren Haynes & Gov't. Mule, Bob Weir and Peter Green/Nigel Watson (a very authentic, heartfelt performance of "Terraplane Blues", in keeping with PG's excellent recordings on "Hot Foot Powder" and the "Robert Johnson Songbook"). If you are really a fan of Robert Johnson, though, the real strength of this disk is the performances by RJ contemporaries such as Robert Lockwood Jr. and Honeyboy Edwards, which provide a real window on the past. While I have issues with the editing of the disk, especially the intercutting of performances with talking heads, on balance this is worthwhile addition for anyone who loves the music of Robert Johnson.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hellhounds on my Trail: Lost Scent
"Hellhounds on my Trail" is a disappointment. The legendary Robert Johnson, perhaps the greatest blues musician in the history of this country, is unseen and effectively unheard in this collage of generally mediocre performances by admirers and wannabes. In fact, the two weakest performances in the film are the opening and closing sequences. The only insight which comes through clearly here is the vast gulf in talent between Robert Johnson and his imitators.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor - except for Rory Block's performance
I agree with most of the other reviewers that this is a very weak production with lots of pretentious talk and some pretty poor musical performances which are heavily cut to make more room for chatter. However the couple of minutes where Rory Block sings "If I had Possession Over Judgement Day" are worth the entire price of this DVD. Don't buy the tape 'cos you'll have to sit through so much stuff you won't make it, but on the DVD you can go straight to Rory Block and never watch the rest. ... Read more

This second volume of raw and gritty More All Stars episodes from the early 1990s finds comedians Martin Lawrence and Joe Torry still on active duty as frequent hosts. (Between introducing up-and-coming, African American comics, Lawrence gets in some good licks about the psychological contrast between deranged white men and defeatist black men getting fired from their jobs.) The overall quality of the shows is a bit lower than Volume 1, but Steve Harvey hits a double with satiric observations about why blacks never hitch rides, Tony Brown strikes a nerve with a joke about ice-skating as a white pursuit, and Gerald Kelly delivers a clever penis plaint from his member's point-of-view. ("You tryin' to suffocate me with that thing?"). Speaking of which, the John and Lorena Bobbitt drama--fresh news at the time--figures prominently in the gags, though to uneven effect. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars subject matter very important, approach to material mixed...
My school career at the University of Washington has been filled with fascinating and important courses in Ethnic relations and studies. My focus has been on Latinos, Asian, and Indigenous groups.I only wish I had had more time to spend looking at African and African-American studies. Since Professor Gates is a notable professor of African-American studies I thought the series was definitely worth checking out.I was prepared to be educated, or at least enlightened.
Professor Henry Lous Gates, Jr. (or "Skip"---the name he uses when introducing himself to his subjects) took the education he had about his own culture and brought it with him into the field, as he focused on race relations in the south, and the MidWest, the divide between wealthy and poor blacks, and Hollywood's view of African-American performers in a business run predominantly by wealthy, old white men. When I use the word "education" in the context of Professor Gates, I am referring to his priviliged prospective of life in the United States. This man had opportunities that some poor whites, and other groups did not have access to.When he encounters poor, Black youth who have had to struggle to rise above the dangerous circumstances of drug and gang-related violence, as well as wealthy African-American entrepeneurs, he approaches both groups of people the same way.He wonders how success is made possible, and how others could've been anything BUT successful.

Though, I think that education, building strong leaders for the future and young people growing into upstanding citizens in the community are all very important factors in this country, I kept feeling Gates lacked compassion for anyone who wasn't like him (i.e. Priviliged, upper-middle class, educated Blacks professionals).Though, I realize he wanted to understand how others "went wrong," for me his ignorance of the hardship others with less money and opportunity endure made the film rather biased and half-baked.However, this film is still worth viewing. In these times, I think that building awareness for the diversity of cultural, racial, and economic groups in the United States is vital in empowering the younger generations who will one day be running this country. ... Before Muhammad Ali, plenty of African American heavyweights boxed, but few did for the game (or for blacks) what Ali did. Ali was bold, outrageous, and controversial. His antics outside of the ring showed an often-hilarious flair for self-promotion, and his conversion to Islam and decision to avoid the Vietnam War only fueled the storm of controversy that surrounded him. The thing about Ali, though, was that he was good enough to get by with it; after all, it's hard to argue with success. In the ring, he showed a sheer prowess and technique that few before or since could approach (the bonus CD-ROM discusses the similarities and contrasts between Ali and the great Joe Louis).Outside the ring, Ali had a sharp mind, good looks, and the strength of his own convictions going for him. This DVD contains footage of Ali's 1964 fight in which he slaughtered Sonny Liston, the 1974 bout where his technique got the better of George Foreman and his fearsome punching power, and the brutal 1975 fight against Joe Frazier (all fights are shown in their entirety). There have been few heavyweight boxers who can compare favorably to Muhammad Ali, and this DVD should be in the collection of all those who consider themselves fans of the sport. --Jerry Renshaw ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a wonderful DVD if you've ever felt cheated by documentaries on Ali where you don't really see the entire fight. This DVD provides 3 of Ali's greatest fights from the very start of each fight to the post-fight banter that he always engaged in. What is particularly great about these 3 fights is that you see a slightly different phase of Ali's boxing style. From his young days with Liston to one of the infamous slugfests with Frazier to the incredible upset over Foreman.

The thing that struck me most was that by seeing the entire fight I ended up with a much different vision of the fight than I had gleaned from documentaries. His defeat of Foreman I felt was much more overwhelming than the impression I got from When We Were Kings for example. I never felt he was in trouble in this fight. Magical stuff.

There is also a nice 1 hr documentary that looks 80s-ish that follows him from his career start to his more dubious fights towards the end.

The quality is good visually given the limitations of the camera back when the fights were fought. I've seen clips that were in a horrible state but these were very clean. The audio is also bad at times (again limitations on the technology) but you can switch on the subtitles which help out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Memories of the golden era of heavyweight boxing
A truly tremendous compilation of Muhammad Ali's best fights. You will get the entire fights along with walk-ins, as well as pre- and after fight hoopla. The best thing is that the fights are shown with the original broadcasting commentary, so the excitement really makes you feel like actually being there back in the seventies. The only drawback of this DVD is the 60 min HBO documentary focusing on the entire career of Ali, where they show only short fight flicks with mixed over studio sounds and studio commentary. In my opinion, the overall quality of the DVD would have been better without the documentary. Sometimes, less is more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD value for all fight fans
Considering you're getting three full fights, PLUS a one hour biography, PLUS a reference CD-ROM, this is a great value. Perfect for all boxing fans, casual or serious. The "Rumble in the Jungle" fight happens to be my fave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Don't They Make Boxing DVD Sets?!
This is an okay dvd set, containing 3 of Ali's greatest fights, but I don't understand why they don't make complete sets of fights, including all of the fighter's bouts, undercards, pre and post fight coverage, everything. They continue to release redundant television shows in "season" box sets, so classic boxing matches should at least deserve the same treatment. All you can find are chopped up, terrible quality sets on auction sites. I'm not saying they should do this for every boxer who ever lived, but the greatest fighters of all time such as Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, George Foreman, Ali of course, Tyson, and Holyfield should make more than enough money to make it worth their while. A Tyson set especially would sell like hot cakes. I think that many people would love to see these fights brought back to their former glory, and it would be especially nice to see the harder to find fights, when these fighters were just starting their professional careers, in dvd quality to boot. Maybe one day they will come to their senses and give the public what it wants. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed with documentary
I own both 'When we were Kings' and 'Muhammad Ali: Greatest Fights (HBO)', I thought this DVD would complement my collection. It does not. The documentary does not show any of Ali's fights but gives you the fight summaries with the sound of the starting bell in the background. Ali's interviews are short (though some of them are rare footage). Two of Ali's greatest fights 'Rumble in the Jungle' and 'Thirller in Manilla' are treated like any other fight, with no emphasis on their importance in Ali's career. The summation in the ending is too abrupt and leaves a true Ali fan dissapointed with this short and commercially engineered documentary. ... Read more

A vibrantly presented and emotionally charged portrait of the dynamic African leader, this needed tighter narration to close informational gaps. For instance, there is very little mention of F.W. de Klerk, although as the corecipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (along with Nelson Mandela), he most certainly figured greatly in the peaceful passing of the political baton. It may leave you with a few questions but otherwise captures Mandela's remarkable spirit. It follows him from his early days and tribal education through his work with the African National Congress to his election as Africa's first black president. Produced by Jonathan Demme, this wisely includes poetry of Africa, as much a part of Mandela's story as his own inner strength. Watched with my teenager and found this to be a very nice review of Nelson Mandela's life. 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy It For Rudy Ray Moore!!!!!
If you're buying this film because you're a fan of Rudy Ray Moore, or you're expecting to watch another Dolemite film, skip it! This film can only be appreciated by kung fu film fans.

Shaolin Dolemite is comprised of footage that wasn't in the film released on DVD as 'Ninja The Final Duel'. Apparently the full length of 'Ninja The Final Duel' is supposed to run for over 10 hours!!! But only the edited version was released. 'Shaolin Dolemite' at least gets you an hour and a half closer (minus the Rudy Ray Moore footage) to having the full version.

So, like I said, DON'T BUY IT FOR RUDY RAY MOORE!!! Buy it if you are a fan of Robert Tai's films and you want to get more footage from 'Ninja The Final Duel' that isn't on the Crash Cinema DVD version of the film.

This movie is one of the worst I've ever seen. That's part of the fun. I'd seriously recommend watching it with a group of friends, shouting out snarky comments to the screen. Trust me, it's the only way to get through it, but it can be fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'd rather drink antifreeze
This movie was really painful to watch. Rudy Ray Moore was only in it for about four minutes alltogether. There was a "Davy Crocket" ninja, some gold robot dudes, and a topless ninja that actually attacked someone with her boobs. Incredibly stupid and a waste of time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid like your life depended on it
I don't actually own this film (Thank GOD!!) I did rent it however, and it stinks! Rudy Ray Moore is past his Dolemite prime in this one. The action part of it is slow and there is no recapturing the glory days. My suggestion is to stick to the orginal and not this cheap imitation to reap money from the Dolemite name.

4-0 out of 5 stars dolemite worst
this is agreat movie put does not live up to the rest of the dolmite classics.its good if you love dolmite bad if your a kung fu fan if you like kung fu movies buy anything Jim Kelly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blessing for Rudy Ray Fans
Personally, I don't think there's anything quite as compelling as a good documentary, and this is a really good documentary. I've been a Dolemite fan for ages, but I knew nothing about Rudy Ray's career before the '70s, like when he first introduced the Dolemite character, or that fifty years ago he was known as R&B singer Prince Dumar.
On the surface this video would seem to appeal mostly to hardcore Rudy Ray fans, but I think it has something to offer any fan of Blaxploitation or early R&B, or for that matter anybody who's into hip-hop culture or contemporary Black comedians.
This is a great video that deserves repeated viewings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rudy! You got my money!
Don't let him get yours. Keep your money. This was awful!

Much of this PBS documentary was filmed on the first federal holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr., when a number of his former associates as well as notable admirers gathered in Atlanta to commemorate his life. The interviews with former President Jimmy Carter, Congressman John Lewis, Bill Cosby, Jesse Jackson, Dick Gregory, Joan Baez, and Bishop Desmond Tutu are moving, but they are no match for the oratory of Dr. King himself.Thankfully, In Remembrance of Martin also makes use of a great amount of archival material, which includes news footage of Dr. King in the years when he was rising to the forefront of the civil rights movement. Dr. King is seen being fingerprinted after his arrest during the Montgomery bus boycott, making his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963, and accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.In addition to being a tribute to Dr. King and his legacy, the inclusion of news films of Klan rallies and violent scenes of police using fire hoses and clubs on peaceful demonstrators makes this video an introduction to the drama and passion of the entire civil rights movement.--Robert J. 4-0 out of 5 stars Foolish Is A Terrific Standup Showcase
Other reviewers have given this movie a hard time, but it is unwarranted. While it is true that the plot is a bit on the weak side, the whole purpose of the movie is to make you laugh. It succeeds admirably in this. Foolish is basically an Eddie Griffin comedy show intermingled with a movie. The movie itself is your standard fare. It was fun to see Marla Gibbs again and Master P made further strides, successfully I might add, to become a mainstream actor. The spot where Foolish really shines is the stand-up routines. Eddie Griffin is one of the best comics out there. It's unfortunate that he hasn't had more exposure. All of his material was fresh and funny. When he was onstage, I couldn't stop laughing! Only once during the film was I disappointed. This was when Griffin gave a monologue that Chris Rock originated in Bigger and Blacker. Even though it was a bit plagerized, this single flaw doesn't detract from the film, especially if you haven't seen Bigger and Blacker. Overall, I feel that you will ultimately be satisfied by this film if you keep your expectations in line. This film is not the outstanding plot-driven comedy you may be searching for, but if you are looking for some hilarious standup, Foolish will have you rolling!

1-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all.
This film is incredibly bad. If you have a taste for buffoonery and ghetto stereotypes, then "Foolish" will be your cup of tea. For the rest of us, stay wise and steer clear. This is 90 minutes of your life that you won't get back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Funny Funny!
This movie is funny trust me, the story line aint all that but the comedy is class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eddie Griffin ROXXX

The three lively, 1990s episodes of Def Comedy Jam on More All Stars, Vol. 1 find Martin Lawrence hosting two of the programs, though his duties include a funny bit about trying to put on a condom in the fog of early-morning sleepiness. ("Just go to work. I'll call you when I'm done.") The parade of brief appearances by working comics include Angela Means, who complains about the worried boyfriend who left her during the L.A. riots because her complexion was dangerously light. Cedric the Entertainer, in his impressionist mode, imagines Luther Vandross's soulful schoolboy days, while Alturo Shelton enlists several colleagues (and the one white guy in the audience) to recreate glory years of the Temptations. Lots to enjoy, but a real highlight is Tommy Chun's bewilderment over Ice Cube's taste in flannel shirts. ("How do you survive in South Central? Get a tank top!").--Tom Keogh ... Read more
