My first tape...Callanetics. Great sculpting workout, but no cardio. The immediate first thought...Tae Bo. I have a lot of friends who sang the praises of Billy Blanks, but I had yet to see myself what cardio kickboxing was all about. I bought the DVD version (1) because it was actually cheaper than the tapes and (2) had all the tapes rolled up into one slim package that would probably last longer anyway. I did what the instructions told me and did the introductory workout first. This teaches you the basics of the moves he likes to incorporate into the routines. Although I feel that he could have explained some of the positions better (i.e., when you do the roundhouse kicks, turn the foot you're standing on OUT...it will help twist your hips down so you can lift your leg as high as possible while working out your gluteal muscles...he doesn't emphasize this, just tells you to keep your hand on your hip and kick to the side), you find out his workout is relatively simple in technique. However, he warns you that he CAN and WILL make it more PHYSICALLY difficult as you progress. I then advanced to the basics workout. Being an avid runner and gym rat, I found this to be a pretty decent workout. Built up a respectable sweat and felt empowered...just pictured kicking ex-boyfriends in the face. :) Plus, I surprised myself with how fierce I can feel...really lets out stress and remains fun. The advanced workout...whoa. Not for the faint of heart. 45 minutes of cardio with many many many fast sequences of kicks and jabs that will make you feel like a puppet being yanked in eight different directions...it's great. :) Then, the floor work...you probably have never done so many doggy-lifts in your life! Killer! :) I highly recommend this DVD!

I thought it was great because it did get my heart rate up, although not like a challenging cycle class, but I knew I was burning calories. I also discovered a couple of muscles that must not be getting a good workout from the other activities. All in all, it was fun and a good way for me to mix things up from my regular weekly routine. Yes, the music is a little repetitive and the people counting to eight constantly can be a little irritating, but I also think you can find something wrong with every single video you do, so whatever. It did it's job- good workout.

It is not for the beginner as there is virtually no instruction, yet the pace is slower than instructional at times. And it is certainly not for the advanced as you will ultimately fast forward this DVD as I had to. I even popped in the VHS tape of the 1997 workout afterword just to get a good ab workout. The entire Flex DVD is very repetitive and in the five years since his original VHS Tae-Bo beginner tape, the only thing that has changed is that his side kick Sherry has blond ringlets and a fake tan. Stick with the original Tae-Bo series if you are looking for a good workout.
And then there's the brain dead formatting. This production of Goodtimes Entertainment (www.goodtimes.com) doesn't even take advantage of the fundamental features of a DVD! There is only one item on the menu: "Play." What's the point of that? It may as well just start playing. Better yet, how about a few more menu choices, like scene selection. Hello?! The 45 minute program isn't broken down into chapters at all, so the Skip Ahead button doesn't work. (You can't even use the Skip Back button to restart at the beginning.) This is supposed to be a DVD that we'll wear out watching over and over, yet they expect us to sit through the introduction every time. If it were up to me, I would have put in at least 4 chapter breaks: intro, warm-up, workout, cool-down, and credits. ( I don't need to be reminded how to warm up, and would rather do that while watching CNN, then skip straight to the workout.) I bought "Flex" in a 3-pack with "Flex Express" and "Cardio." Cardio isn't as bad content-wise, but it's not compelling either, and it still suffers the same poor production quality.

Video two focuses more on the legs. One irritating thing is that he keeps saying in what I perceive as the hardest part of the workout that this is just the basic video. It's not very encouraging. I do like how Billy reminds you to focus and you'll get through it. I have damaged cartilage in my right knee from years of dancing, so I look for videos that are entertaining, mentally stimulating, but provide as little impact as possible. Video two strains my knee, so I have only done it five times and prefer video one, given visible improvements in my abdominals and posture after just three weeks.
As an instructor, Billy Blanks is very likeable and extremely enthusiastic. However, his counting is not always accurate, and he frequently completes an uneven number of sets from one side of the body to the other. These tapes would be good for those who like simple kickboxing routines focused mainly on punches and which include some toning in addition to cardio.

The Beginner Tape explains all the moves - I highly recommend watching this first. The Basic Tape is a great 30 minute workout, however there are a couple of minor goof ups: Billy seems to have trouble keeping the exercise counts consistent on each "side" when you're working out. In one spot, Billy starts a new movement before the complete 8-count from the previous move is completed (and his workout buddies in the background get confused). There is another point in the video where Billy tells you to work the "other side" but he promptly starts the exercise on the same side already done. And sometimes when switching to the "other leg" he doesn't do the exact same exercise after the switch. These problems are all minor, and I've come to anticipate them as I watch. Also, the Tae-Chi style cool-down session on the original Tae-bo tapes is better than the one on this tape. It's almost as if Billy runs out of time, and doesn't want to go over 30 minutes. This tape is ALL cardio. No floor work for legs, buns, or abs. The Advanced Tape is truly for individuals with a high fitness level. Although I seem to find that the original Advanced Tae-Bo tape gets me breathing and sweating a little harder than this "Live" version. Still, this is a killer workout, and not for the timid. I use ankle and wrist weights when doing the Basic Tape, but this one is killer all on its own. The cardio portion is followed by a grueling floor portion for legs, buns, and abs - and you will be watching the clock praying for time to speed up. I keep the VCR display counter on the screen during this tape so I can keep an eye on how long the torture will last! To be honest, I really don't use the 8-minute tape. I've watched it once, but 8 minutes of cardio, no matter how intense, is simply not enough to maintain a good fitness level. Sure - it's better than nothing, so if you're in a rush then pop this tape in. But you're better off committing to at least 30 minutes a day. Minor problems aside, this is certainly a workout video worthy to be added to your collection. I suggest getting the original set (where Billy claims he will "make you a Conquerer!), as well as this "Live" set, so that you can keep variety in your training. I find myself using the Beginning and Advanced tapes from both sets on a regular basis. I've enjoyed these tapes, and my wife and I have both enjoyed the results.
This particular set is a great set for Tae Bo fans or Tae Bo beginners. Although the instructional workout can be boring, you really need to watch and work along with it before doing your first workout. It will hopefully help you complete your workouts safely and effectively. The basic workout is a great workout that beginners will find challenging. Eventually you may be able to move to the advanced tape, but take your time and build your skills, confidence, and endurance first. The 8-minute workout is not really something you should use on its own. I would suggest doing the basic workout and the 8-minute workout back-to-back as you progress between basic and advanced. Just try out various ideas to see what is best for you. And don't get discouraged if even the basic is too tough for you to complete when you begin. Take your time and focus on completing the moves you make as cleanly as possible, work on good form. Approach Tae Bo with the a determinded and strong mind! You will feel great!
The Basic workout is the toughest basic Tae Bo I've encountered so far, but it is also the most interesting, as Billy includes a greater variety of punches and kicks as well as more punch-kick combinations. This workout begins with a 4-minute warmup and then moves right into punches, placing an emphasis on your waist during the moves. At one point, there is a particularly tough arms segment requiring you to hold up your arms for what seems like forever--my shoulders were screaming! The legwork is also challenging, as you will perform several different types of kicks--including front kicks, side kicks, back kicks, and roundhouse kicks--in several different combinations. Although a few of the combinations were a bit hard to follow, I really enjoyed the variations that Billy included in this workout. This workout also contains some static holds (about 1 minute), and it ends with an extremely quick 1-minute stretch; the entire program clocks in at 31 minutes. These Tae Bo videos are perfect for anyone looking for an interesting, varied kickboxing workout with a nice balance of punches, kicks, and combinations.
The instructional tape is good; when you do it right you feel the effects; the beginners is good advances on the instructional; the advances advances on the beginners and the instruction. Buy it, you won't be disappointed! ... Read more | |
