5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Submarine 6 - Special Edition
Wow! What stunning animation, the fluid motion scenes are just the best (even by today's standards). Fabulous battle scenes that are genuinely exciting, and some very sad scene (bring a hanky). Some of the music has made it into my permanent mp3 collection as well ;-)

It's an eco story in the best tradition of Anime. The characters are very recognisable, but Anime is made up of such standard characters e.g. the embittered veteran, the naive young women, the mad scientist etc, but it's none- the- worse for this.

If you cannot appreciate how good a piece of work this is, then perhaps you need to stick to watching DragonBall Z.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good animation, and that's it
The main hype of "Blue Submarine No. 6", as far as I can tell, is the animation is glorious. Good animation, people say, and ground breaking at the time.

Well when I saw it all I could see was good animation. But good animation can't carry a series, that's why you have anime fanboys that run around saying indiscriminantly, "Well animation was good but storyline sucked." I'm not a fanboy, but seriously...the animation was good, and the storyline stunk.

We open with the world at a higher level because a mad scientist destroyed the ice caps and raised a navy of mutant fish-people. Sure, why not? The humans plan to launch an attack on their arctic base, but the fish navy catches them completely by surprise and attacks them a la Pearl Harbor. Huh? Wait a minute...don't they still have RADAR in the future? In fact, since its the future, wouldn't they have BETTER radar than we do now? Did the ocean's level drown out satellites too? Any way, our main hero - the cliche, unwilling type - gets seperated and hangs around with a fishgirl atop a whale as he blabs his life history. Five minutes later we're watching a pack of whales get killed like we're not supposed to care.

The finale of this series' problems comes when we watch the sharkman villain get struck by two tomahawk missiles...then comes back as if that was nothing. I was half expecting him to say in a British accent, "I got better!"

The series suffers from some other troubles. There's the classic anime cliche of introducing a character and then killing them off five minutes later, or worse yet cutting to a dramatic death scene of a character we've never seen before. In fact, so many of these characters are just archetypes or undeveloped that I really didn't care who wins or loses.

Overall, a big disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Sci-Fi Anime...
As mentioned in the title above this is one of the better Sci-fi anime's. This was shown on Cartoon Network's Toonami, but was editied for viloance and some toplessness... A decent story, Extras are good sence the storyline did not realy give us much info on the charactures. Only main complaint is that this series is a little TO SHORT! Still it is one of the better anime's and it gives one a good look at wars and humanity. Would recomend for some di-hard anime fans, but I digress that this series does not "rub everyone the right way". Keep the peace all!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but...
Well, I can agree with what all of the other people say-good series, some wierd parts. But, above it says the DVD's contain the edited version. They DON'T!!! I really wanted to show this to one of my friends, but I can't because of some choice parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the last time! it's an OVA not a miniseries!
i have, for too long heard anime fanatics say it is a miniseries because of it's four day run on toonami, which was ridiculously censored. if you want to see this great ova, then buy the dvd, but expect the worst cg since pilot candidate. if that doesnt bother you, go nuts. ... Read more

The look of the anime series Blue Submarine No. 6 is the place to start any description of it. The 1998 show uses more computer-generated3-D images than any series, yet the show looks like a video game. The plot, which also reminds one of a video game, is like a spinoff of Waterworld: in the near future, Earth's coastal cities are flooded, and an evil power, Zorndyke, has brought his minions to destroy the remaining humans. Earth's best weapon is a submarine fleet led by the supercool No. 6. Young Mayumi is an officer assigned to bring hotshot Tetsu back into the fold. The Travis Bickle-like Tetsu is more intrigued by learning about the faceless enemy--all that is known is their destructive tactics and elegant ships, intriguing combinations of beast and machine (a whale submarine, an insectlike tank). We discover just enough of the series' premise in this introductory 30-minute chapter, which is always watchable if never memorable. Rated 13 and older for violence and some nudity. --Doug Thomas ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, but not for beginners!
Blue Sub No. 6 is an incredible short anime series. You can read the synopsis above, so I won't reiterate...the animation, both cel and CG, is beautiful, and the story is intriguing, although somewhat difficult to follow. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who's just getting into anime, as the plotline and storytelling is definitely Japanese; it doesn't develop the same way an American animation or movie would (or even as most newer anime does), and if you're not familiar with the difference in style, it'll confuse you. (Especially since you have to buy four DVDs/videos to see it all, and if you're like me, that'll take a little time!) However, I highly recommend this series if you're an anime appreciater. Well, maybe you truly hardcore folks won't like it, and if you're into blood, power armor, or jiggling, this won't do for you, either. If you enjoy a good story, though, as I do, this is for you.

One of the best newer series I've seen of late, and I've been watching for a number of years. My only real complaint is the length-to-price ratio. Each disc is rather short for what you pay...but I was addicted enough after the first episode to shell out the cash for the other three!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dude!! This is totally the best!!!!!!!!!
I found this anime title on cartoon network when they ran it as a movie. They did a nice job editing and dubbing evan keeping the original names (that's a big surprise). The animation in this is gorgeos ranging from computer graphics (CG) and your wonderful anime artistry. The charectar designs for this anime is phenomanal and the way the emotions are depicted are beautiful. I have seen many anime in my life but this one is wonderful. I havn't had the chance to see it on a tape uncut or anything but as for a tv version I personally think it was wonderful. Blue Sub no. 6 is basiclly about the end of the world when the major cites of earth are flooded and creatures start attacking people. A young 18 year-old girl named Kino starts off the movie looking for Mayami (Spelling? i think its right) an ex-pilot. She finds him and is dissapointed in his lack of enthusiasum and leaves. She and her friend whose name I don't remember are going back to Blue Sub 6 when these giant spider-like creatures start attacking the people of the city. in the end of the whole ordeal Mayami ends up saving Kino, her friend, and some lady from being fried. So Mayami emds up on Blue 6 after all. Evevtually the main crew of blue sub 6 send Mayami and Kino out in a scouter ship to get rid of some demon water crafts. Kino and Mayami end up shooting one of those spider-like things and it is stuck on top of a submerged building. Mayami exits the scouter and finds a human, girl-like creature with red eyes and weird hair. Mayami saves her and later on this prooves to be useful, when he is drowning in the ocean. The demon girl carries him back to safty, whitch is a giant floating piece of rubble left from a blue sub explosion (note: not blue sub 6 another part of the Blue army fleat) Mayami wakes up to find the demon girl floating in the water staring at him. time passes and the two become frinds. Time goes by and the final battle to save mankind has come and Kino and Mayami go off in search of the mad scientist who created all of the demons and killed 10 billion people. Since this is such a good story and I can't nearly tell it as good as it is then I'm going to stop and say one thing (ok.....maybe a couple) Blue Submarine no. 6 allllllllllll the way!!!!!! oh yeah and the music in it is awesome!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Anime with a different flavor
Fans of anime in general will definitely dig Satoru Ozawa's 4-part, 'Blue Submarine No. 6,' series. For starters, being that the story is centered around futuristic submarines and naval warfare, viewers are treated to some terrific battle scenes taking place on and below water - a setting typically not utilized in anime. Vol. 1 of the series sets the stage nicely showcasing some of the offensive/defensive capabilities of Blue Sub No. 6 and the colorful assortment of characters within it.

While much has already been commented on regarding the use of CG and traditional animation utilized in this series, in summary it looks just fine and at times absolutely breathtaking. But perhaps one of the best aspects of this disc is the really awesome Dolby 5.1 audio track for the Japanese-language track. This mix will have your system pumping out for sure - definitely one of the better audio mixes i've heard on an anime DVD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Water is fun..So are Submarines :D
This was pretty good. The story needs some deveopment but other than that..it was sweet. Charaters are cool and the music is AWESOME! Wicked....

5-0 out of 5 stars The end couldn't be cooler
This is one of the best "end of the world" stories. I liked the bad guy of the story, instead of being some psycho he actually has a reason for destroying the world. Good CG animation too. Great anime { once again}. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars editing on this movie
this film was first shown in the uk on the cartoon network channle about 4 years ago i was 11 i loved it my mum loved it and she dont even like anime. well around sumer of 2002 toonami stoped showing on cartoon network beacause turner bought out a new channle cnx all the anime was shown on their in cluding adultswim it wasnt called that it was just cnx well after outlaw star and cowboy be-bop and spawn they hade a movie at 10pm with those martshall arts horror film but in their time they did show blue sub 6 and gundamwing endless walts. but just
beacaused they couldent be arsed to get the uncut version they shew it edited.well about a year after the channle closed down du to poor raitings and chained to the toonami tv channle and blue sub no 6 is still reapeted the edited version every half term along side these crappy hero films. soon im ordering it uncut somtime this week and i will ejoy it the way it was soposed to be shown.

ps i still thought the edited version was okay in story line and the film in jenral. and the editing was okay until the end part when you know who dies but i would like to actually se it instead of assume it happend.

i just thought that being on at 10pm could of got them to show it uncut for once.

thanks for reading i hope i didnt bore you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rating for Edited Toonami Edition
Let me start by saying that this is an excellent film. That said, even its editted form is not suitable for children. I have found the rating system for Japanese animation to be very inconsistent with 13+ rated films that are okay for any age and 7+ rated films, like this one, only suited to teens and adults. Another problem is censorship. Censors are not artists and often hack out very important scenes that mar the film. Usually this means cutting out scenes of bloodshed and death while leaving the actual battle scenes intact. The result is pointless violence. Blue Submarine 6 Toonami Edition is one of these films, although the hack job is less severe than some other films I have seen, like Cardcaptors for example.

Back to the film itself: The first episode is very confusing. It is like picking up a novel in the middle and trying to understand what is going on. If you can get past the first half hour however, the story gradually falls into place and the film improves by leaps and bounds. By the end, you will probably be glad you stuck it out.

The only reason I purchased the Toonami version was that it was much less expensive than the unedited version. However, I always recommend getting the original if possible, and Blue Sub 6 is no exception.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good series, poor editing
I love this series. I rented each dvd individually at my local store and nearly cried when the Musuca died 3/4 of the way through the series. It is an excellent scene that I believe is badly marred due to the editing done for television. I'm a little curious why an unedited "movie" version hasn't come out. Great series and well worth the purchase. If you're just curious about the show or just want some anime to satisfy those cravings, pick up this edited version of the show. But if you really care about getting the full effect, pass on it because you might be upset

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Anime Art
Blue Sub No.6 has captured my imagination. The characters seem so familer as the plot continues. Its amazing how an experimental cell animation and CG anime came out so wonderfully.
The animation is amazing as the explosions come to life.

I totally recomend it to anime lovers of any age. Blue Sub No. 6 is an unbeleiveable travaganza of art and computer graphics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ummm WHAT?!?
Ok. So I loved this show. But now here's the thing why it's 2 stars. Why didn't they release this in the FIRST place!?!? hehe geez.. Instead of me paying $16-20/disc for those 4 episodes. SO.. I could have saved [money] by getting this version they didn't release until months later?

Well besides my rant of getting jipped on the pricing, the entire story line is very cool. The combination of 3D modelled animation and hand drawn is very awesome. I like this new Era that Anime is coming into. They're doing more on the computer and looks much cooler than it ever could hand drawn. I suggest if anyone's an Anime and 3D graphics addict, they pick this flic up (and save a buck or two on collect calls, lol!) . It's a must for any Anime collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars By this time you have 4 volumes
I never expected that a show that bursts with graphics can be so deep. You have to watch each episode sequentially to get the big picture. The animation made me interested in this series, but it was the drama the kept me glued.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blue Submarine
Really good anime, the story is good and the action is really good in this anime, if you are a real anime you must get it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great animation
This anime has awesome animation. The best computer graphic animation I have seen. Yet, the story line is confusing and you have to really pay attention to this anime. If you like anime just for the awesome animation you can get this but...it's plot is nothing special.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Blend of CG, Anime, and Jazzy Sounds
The story of Blue Submarine #6 (Ao no Rokugo) comes to a conclusion in this extended length episode. Revolutionary for its blending of computer generated graphics with traditional cel animation--done before but never to such extent or with such success--Blue #6 like many modern anime is a cautionary environmental tale of mankind's struggles to get along with Nature.

In prior episodes, a scientist has brought about devastating ecological changes to the Earth, flooding most of the land by melting off the polar caps and making Antarctica a habitable paradise populated with his sylvan genetically-engineered creations. The crew of Blue #6 have orders to launch a nuclear strike on the scientist's "base" (a small cabin in a village, as we later see) to stop his flipping of the world's magnetic poles and subsequent extinction of mankind.

The final episode features some incredible battle sequences between the forces of humankind and those of Nature (who have an giant submarine modified from an old battleship) and a somewhat confusing at times anticlimatic confrontation between the main character and the "evil" scientist. Who will win? Will humanity survive at the expense of Nature, or can the two coexist?

The soundtrack is outstanding, performed by a Japanese big band group and includes the stunning, sultry, Jazz-club-esque closing title, Minasoko ni Nemure (literally, "Sleep on the Sea Floor" or "(this thing that) Sleep Inside Everyone." Some may find the juxtaposition of brassy big band jazz sounds over climatic battle sequences a bit off-putting, but for me, they work hand-in-hand and offer a wonderful sensory experience.

Check out the whole series. I saw this episode first and went back to see what I had missed (most of the story won't make sense otherwise) and am glad that I did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Looks Aren't Everything
...P>The story behind "Blue 6" is simple, but made meaninglessly complex. Apparantly the script writers decided that instead of coming up with their own ideas, it would be much more fun to borrow a story-line that seems less in place with anime and more in line with the plot of a Marvel comic book...

The story is completely redundant. You have everything in here to make a cliche'd movie that only the Sci-fi channel would want to run. Sure, there are a few imagninative moments here and there,...

The characters are possibly the rarest to find even in bad anime....these characters don't make any sense!! Who are they? Where did they come from? Why are they in charge of this submarine? Why do they have a little kid working the communications? And why does one of their team mates resemble a more amsculine Wionna Ryder? Seriously, if you're going to spend this much time working on the overall look of the OAV, you might as well have put some thought into the characters. No matter, what happens to them or what troubles they face, you never seem to care about what happens to the crew, not enough detail was given even for that...

The music was very annoying...simply put. It sounded as if someone stole sheet music from yoko Kanno, then decided that they didn't like they way the score was arranged, so they took liberties upon changing the music into something less interesting and more...cold. The music just seems to "start up" without any purpose and it really throws your mind for a loop it doesn't have to go through. It's basically jazz, if you can call that, and it really doesn't have a place in the world of "Blue Sub 6."

The battle sequences are the only things that are well animated, and even then they seem to be borrowing ideas from anime that involve starships. So the battlescenes basically turn what seemed like an original submarine/post-apoclyptic anime into "Macross"-underwater. They do give some thrill, but what's the point? The story is so lame you hardly understand why there are underwater battles going on in the first place.

The series is only 4 episodes long. 4 episodes=4 DVDs. That's 1 episode per DVD, so each DVD is 30 minutes long...something ain't right here. Why pay [$$] for thirty minutes? It makes no sense!! And to top it off, these DVD's don't come with any extras,

Overall, "Blue Sub 6" could have been a better anime, but not in this lifetime...

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth owning
Despite the price factor, and only one episode per DVD, this series is so fantastic, and I'm glad I own it. If you are a DVD fanatic, love anime, have a great home theater setup, and want to watch some very pleasurable eye-candy, this is the set for you. The story is compelling enough to keep your attention, and the visuals are just plain awesome! Sad side note for the sub-title haters; 5.1 is only offered in Japanese! But, for you purists that hate bad english dubbing, you will be very pleased. Actually, the english voice overs could have been a lot worse, but I would much rather enjoy it in its original form. This is a must-have series, so get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop the horns, but bring on the battle!!!
In my opinion, the mix of CG & anime make for one of the best anime videos Ive ever seen. Im a fan of all anime, and have a wide nackground, and although the series is way too short and the battle music needs to drift away from that cheery horn, BS6 is recommended to anyone who likes a good plot and a lot of action. What is with the music, though? You dont have an epic battle scene filled with ragin waters, exploding subs, and deadly missles, while a squeaky horn is playing in the background. The characers are likeable, especially Tetsu Hayami (Im not totally confident on the spelling). I tend to like the quiet, mysterious guys who have a bad temper. Basically, i recommend this anime to anyone and everyone!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars state of the art
This four volume series is exceptional--I like it as much as Macross Plus with the drama, the dialogue, and of course, the action and mechanical designs. Computer graphics and cell animation merge seamlessly. The characters are deep and diverse. The setting is similar to Voogies Angel and Agent Aika (or Waterworld) , while the theme of a scientist creating human-animal hybrids or mutants reminds me of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Even though each DVD is only about 30 minutes long (this last volume is longer), as long as I don't pay more than twenty dollars this collection is worth it. Cartoon Network is going to show this series Nov 6, but for best picture quality this is best enjoyed on DVD. The dubbing was done by Coastal Carolina--my favorite sound studio. This series gives not only beautiful graphics and glorious explosions, but asks the nature of humankind's tendency for conflict and violence. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite episode
Blue Submarine No.6 is a great miniseries, and starting this episode you will start to pay less attention to the wonderful graphics and more attention to the motives of the characters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Short for the Price
This DVD, although visually impressive isn't worth the price for only 30 min of animation. It was an interesting blend of computer generated scenes along with traditional animation, but there were sections that just didn't mesh all that well. It sets the stage for the rest of the series, but doesn't cover enough plot to make me want to buy the second volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally it all comes together!
While visually the first 2 episodes of Blue Sub were amazing, they just left you wanting a little more substance. Hearts, the third episode, fleshes out the main characters a little more and clarifies the conflict. The production value of the disk is on par with the rest of Bandai's work. The disk has tight menu's and great audio video quality. If it weren't for the bits of blood and nudity this series would be a great demonstration for DVD picture quality, as well as the future of animation. Check it out.
