5-0 out of 5 stars Nice To See
I have to say that this series is one of the best I have ever seen. It's funny, it has pretty girls, it has guns and ammo. It's all over a good show in my eyes. No magic or anything like that so it's a lot more real. Not the best for young children, but very good for teens and adults. ... Read more

The 1997 television series Burn Up Excess was the second follow-up to the original Burn Up OAV (1991). Rio, the four other women of the Tokyo Police Warrior Team, and Yuji, the lone male, swing back into action, battling the machinations of the mysterious Miss Ruby. Although the Team solves hostage situations, jewel robberies, terrorist activities, serial underwear thefts, and underworld wars, Excess features less violence and more slapstick than the original. But the point of the series is the jiggle shots, gratuitous nudity, and jokes about men driven to unseemly behavior by animal lust. The extras include a "jiggle counter" that enumerates the number of times each character's breasts bounce. The buxom character designs and over-the-top shootouts embody the clichés that lead many Americans to dismiss anime as "Big Eyes, Big Breasts, and Big Guns." Rated 15 Up: Nudity, profanity, violence, sexual humor, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than Burn Up W, and That's A Lot!
Burn Up W was great; great story, great music, and great characters! But Burn Up Excess takes it even further. Rio, Maya, Lilica, Nanvel, Yuji, and Maki return for another dose of the Burn Up series. If you haven't seen Burn Up W you can still understand the story, which makes Excess great! It's about Team Burn Up and the cases they take on, so think cop show with hot chicks and one "normal" guy. Rio is the female lead, which is ironic because she usually has money problems or ends up with nothing in the end. Yuji is hard to place because he acts "normal", so just think average guy around gorgeous women all day. Assisting the story and sometimes leading it are her co-workers: Maya the gun nut who really, really enjoys using guns, Lilica the cute computer specialist, and finally Nanvel, the prettiest technologist I've ever seen. Maki is the boss, which gives her little to work with but she still plays a big role. There are a few other characters, but I won't spoil it for you. Burn Up Excess consists of four volumes with four episodes on each. So, if you buy all four you got your day planned. The content is just like Burn Up W, so expect high doses of everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, very funny
Yes this is a great anime, girls, guns, explosions, pink cokroaches and bunny mecha.... It pretty much spoofs everything, including itself. Very light hearted even when they have a serious storyline. However, I must put out a bit of a warning. I was originally led to believe that it was a sequel to Burn Up W. It isn't. It has the same characters, the same quirky humor, but there are enough differences to put it out of continuity. The storyline from Burn Up W isn't continued, and I doubt it will be. Still, this is a pretty good anime regardless. It's funny, at times cute, and rather addictive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, and bouncy to boot!
I have to say, it's very hard to make me laugh, and this series made me laugh quite a bit. It's quite a step up from the first two Burn Ups. And of course, it helps that this show can not only make you laugh, but make you drool too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch all the way!
By far the most enjoyable incarnation of Burn Up. If you were let down by the amazingly bad wrap up of the Burn Up W series, don't shy away from Excess. No previous knowledge of the Burn Up universe is required, but it certainly doesn't hurt. The storyline from Burn Up W continues into Excess, but-- again, no previous knowledge is required.

The animation is excellent. Flawless. Spectacular direction and execution. Character designs have been tweaked and the series has a much more "serious" feel to it. If you think you'll miss the silly humor of the Burn Up W episodes, you may want to try before you buy.

As for the rest of us... Excess is dead-on. A very strong set of episodes. Extras are solid. The Jiggle Counter is not always accurate, but we could argue all day. ;)

Oh yeah, and if you like fan service, you just can't go wrong!

4-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and filled with laughs!!!
After two to three years of letting the license for this anime sit on the shelf, ADV Films has finally decided to reenact this anime for US commerical release!

Generally, a person would not watch an anime like Burn-Up Excess for any sort of educational value whatsoever. It does not have heart-wrenching drama or a stunning story that makes you sit up and say "Wow!" Rather, a person would watch this if you needed something to laugh at. And Burn Up Excess provides lots to laugh about.

Enter Rio, the foremost character of Burn Up Excess (and the one you see on the front cover.) She's broke, she overspends, and her answering machine is loaded with messages from various bill collectors. To pay all this, she works at Policetown HQ. However, what's special about her (or her job, at least) is that she belongs to Team Warrior.

Team Warrior is a small elite crime squad that serves as a police special operations unit. Along with Rio in this unit are Maya, a green haired gun maniac, Yuji, a driver/pilot of all vehicles and part-time pervert, Nanvel, the mechanical genius, Lilica, the hyper computer hacker, and Maki, their boss, who is always cool and collected. Together, they face off against the many terrorist who would dare to take on the law, or Maya's big gun, or Rio's special-issue police baton, whichever is convenient.

Ladies might not be as appreciative of this series as most gentlemen would be. This series is absolutely loaded with "fan service," or raw appeal for men. There is much suggested nudity (nothing concrete), as well as four of the five Warrior ladies have huge chest that will definitely lead to back strain later in their lives. Added to this is ADV Film's patented Jiggle Counter, an extra that can be set to show how many times the breasts of the Warrior ladies bounce during the DVD. This show was obviously created with the male fan in mind.

So, if you feel you are in need of some laughs, then pick up this popular comedy/action anime, as there's a lot of fighting and loads of humor to be served up! ... Read more

This nutty police-adventure-cum-fan-service fest comes to a bigfinale in three linked episodes that sort of explain what's been going on.The Tokyo Police Warrior Team discover they've been used as pawns in asinister plot that involves a former prime minister, Masato (Warrior chiefMaki's ex-lover), the murderous Miss Ruby, and a horde of battle robots ("theultimate fighting machines"). It's difficult to take the threats tooseriously, as director Shinichiro Kimura shoots about one-fourth of thescenes at chest level, allowing the camera to linger on the bouncing breastsof Rio, Lilica, and Maya--in the shower, putting on their bras, and jigglingwith every step they take. Despite the crisis, Yuji spends most of eachepisode trying to peek into the women's locker room and getting clobbered.(Rated 15 and older: nudity, profanity, violence, violence against women, sexualhumor, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best volume of the series
Adoring fans of the Burn Up Excess series are left with even more comedy, action, and gratutious clevage. The ending to this series was a bit of a surprise, but one that any could make up the conclusion to. The dub was exceptional, for the twang of each characters' tongue made the English version special, unlike some that make you want to switch off your DVD player. Although this series as a whole didn't contain as much action as some may have hoped, it made those who watched it lips' curl up into a smile. Through the comedy of breasts bouncing up and down and Rio kicking serious butt came a strong sense of love for the characters that took part in this series. Look out Mecca cops, here come Rio, Maya, Lilica, Nanvel, and Yuji in the LAST EXCESS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excess ends on a high note.
To start this off, the first episode on the disc (of three) has the lowest production values of the entire Excess series. The animation budget appears to be at the bare minimum for the entire episode. Even the action scenes are reduced to near-slideshow quality.

However, there are many humorous scenes in that episode... especially the 'sexual assault'. Hilarious.

I guess they were saving up the money for the final two episodes.

Well, that's fine with me becuase the final two episodes are amazing. Well worth the price of the disc. They really turn things loose. It's spectacular. The animation is spot-on, and there are so many memorable moments. The action scenes are very creative and well-directed. The story wraps up nicely.

I didn't much care for Nanvel up to this point. Now I think she's my favorite character. Yuji's got some great "Additional Theater" stuff on the disc as well. "EXCITING!"

If you enjoyed the action and pacing of the final volumes of Macross Plus, this is for you. And Burn Up fans, this is what we've all been waiting for. Excess at it's best. I dare say that no one will walk away disappointed with the finale of this series.

Extras are average. Disc layout is easy to navigate. In the end, I've got no complaints. Highly recommended to all anime fans. ... Read more

Too silly to work as a police series, but too violent to play as a comedy, this over-the-top series vacillates between extremes but never achieves a satisfactory resolution. The Warrior Strike Team represents the elite of the Tokyo police force in the not-too-distant future. Except for Yuji, the lone, ineffectual male, its members are women who seem to specialize in skimpy outfits: blond heroine Rio, sharpshooter Maya, computer expert Lelica--aided by techno-wizard Nanvel and shrewd commander Maki. They're pitted against a gang of ruthless criminals who have created a "virtual drug," a sort of electronic mind-control system. The screenplay by Katsuhiko Kochiba and Sumio Uetake tries to build suspense, then undercuts it with slapstick sexual humor and vice versa. Episode 3 begins with the perennially broke Rio trying to sell her used underwear to a sex-shop dealer but ends with a violent bloodbath in which her best friend is killed. When Rio sobs over her friend's murder, it's staged so that the camera is peeking up her skirt. Many anime series successfully juggle comedy and violent conflicts (Cowboy Bebop, Gunsmith Cats, for example) but Burn-Up W never gels. Suitable for ages 18 and up: nudity, profanity, sexual humor, violence, violence against women. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A better deal than VHS, but still above average.
For all four episodes on one tape and in three languages, this DVD isn't really a bad deal. Burn Up Warrior follows the story of a dispatch team known as Team Warrior, which handles obscure cases that cannot be placed into specific categories. It's also impossible not to notice that Team Warrior consists mostly of large-breasted women. There's not as much nudity as one would imagine, but there's some, and plenty of bouncing to accompany it. As for sound, Burn Up W has a great opening theme song that has an easily likable tune. The dubbing for the most part sucks, but who says you need to listen to the English track? The anime itself is a cross between comedy and action, but the execution on both is only average.

Starting off with a terrorist demand for a nude bungee jump which has to be performed by the Warrior Rio, the stories feature other fun crap like an Evangelion parody and a trip to a used underwear shop. Eventually it wears down to a hard-boiled revenge story; in episode four, Team Warrior has to dispose of three deranged murderers which make for some decent fight scenes and a strangely whimsical battle theme. Alas, the main organization behind everything is never destroyed, and the grand conflict is never resolved. The DVD is by far a better deal than the VHS tapes, which have only one half-hour episode on each one.

One last note, this anime isn't rated 18 up, it would be more like 13 up. This is far from hentai, which is 18+ anime.

4-0 out of 5 stars "There's a shooting spree in accounting"
ahhh, the tongue in cheek anime genre, gotta love it aint cha, they manage to spoof everything including themselves. The two main girls, rio and maya, are overly endowned, as most pf the female characters are, but purely for humorous intent, and humerous it is.

techinically, the animation is some of the best you're likely to see from an anime series, the detail is great, althogugh it does lack in some areas like minor characters and backgrounds.

The music, is just great, wheras episodes 1 and 2 are laugh out loud funny, the second two are more serious and emotional, what is commendable is that these characters progess believably, and are consistent, its not like they are going for laughs, these are who they are.

classic scenes are evident evwrywhere, rios constipation, maya trigger happy nature and the funniest evangelion tribute/joke ever. Complete with many spoofs of mission impossible, die hard with a dash of inuendo from yugi and rio's love-hate? relationship

This is really opne for those who like their anime funny and serious with lots ofr action, a bit of everything basicly. Did you like project a-ko, slayers or tenchi? if so this is for you, its also on one disc so it s cheap, like the budgy.

why did i give it only 4 stars if i praise it so#? thats a personal peeve as to the fact that its only 4 episodes period, theyran out of budget or something and leave the series on a ambiguous note, if only adv would put up the money for a second outing for the warrior team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Anime To Start
I would like to first say that this was the very first Anime I ever saw and since then I've loved it as well as a small group of other anime. The characters are funny and you've gota love that hair they have. The only boy in the show is a prick which is always nice. :) Wouldn't recommend it for small children, but for teens and adults, I STRONGLY recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anime Fanservice ^^
Burn Up W, What can I say? Team Warrior has to uncover a conspiracy behind mind altering drugs. But the fanservice is great. Light nudity here and there but lots of jiggling cleavage and panty shots.Id recommend this and Burn Up Excess to anyone into comedy and police Anime. This DVD has great extras and plenty shots of Rio but not enough of Maya.... Anyway if you like the pervertive yet shy guy Yuji or the gun crazy Maya.Get this DVD

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must See!
I'll admit I initially bought this anime for the "animation", but after watching it I found the plot to be just as amazing. Everything was simply superb from the great animation to the compelling plot. From all the anime titles I've seen I'm glad I got this one. It has just about everything and quite a bit of each, but don't let that keep you from seeing it! ... Read more

The frenetic Burn Up Excess television series (1997) was the second follow-up to the original Burn Up OAV (1991). Rio, Lilica, Maya, Maki, and Yuji of the Tokyo Police Warrior Team continue to battle various lowlifes and sleazebags, most of whom are somehow linked to the femme fatale Miss Ruby. In "An Idol Never Sleeps," a pop singer haunted by a stalker crosses paths with an international arms smuggler. The episode-long flashback "Rambo! Bravo!" explains how the ditzy, perennially broke Rio Kinezono became a member of the elite Warrior team, despite her disastrous record at the Police Academy. Rio, who makes Mihoshi in Tenchi Muyo sound like an intellectual, jiggles her way through these misadventures in a variety of minimal outfits. Burn Up Excess is definitely not PC, but some otaku delight in its cheerfully unabashed sexism. Rated 15 Up: Nudity, profanity, violence, sexual humor, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An old classic finally gets a long-overdue DVD release.
The origonal BURN-UP! video is finally on DVD! YES! O.K., for those of you who've never seen it before, it has NOTHING to do with the BURN-UP W, X-CESS, or recent SCRAMBLE series. the characters and story are all completly independant, although there are simular themes.

The scene is Tokyo, sometime in the not-too-distant-future. Women are being kidnapped off the streets and forced to become sex slaves for some rich, amoral men. (Despite such mature themes, this isn't an X-rated hentai title, though there are some definete adult-only moments, probably a title for 17 and older.) Three female traffic cops-impulsive, hot-tempered Maki, cool, level-headed Reimi, and ditzy Yuka-decide to do some under cover work, with the help of Maki's boyfriend/co-worker Kenji and his partner Banba, by going to a nightclub where many recent kidnappings have occured, and trying to lure the criminals out. But their plans backfire and Yuka ends up as the latest kidnap victim! The next day new evidence shows millionare Samuel McCoy as the mastermind behind the whole plot, but because he has powerful friends in high places, the police cheif says simply that there's nothing they can do. Maki and Reimi can't just leave it at that, so putting both their lives and their jobs at risk, they steal some body armor suits and heavy weapons and a police tank and set out to McCoy's to rescue Yuka and the rest of the kidnapped girls.

Lots of action, humor, and hot anime babes. (Though their breasts are nowhere near as exaggeratedly large as Rio's from the later BURN-UP series.) Also, the dub features long-time voice acting vets such as Tiffany Grant as Maki and Amanda Winn as Reimi. (Sadly, nether Amanda Winn nor the woman who does the voice of Yuka work for ADV anymore.) ... Read more
