4-0 out of 5 stars Good Workout
Normally, I would give Denise a completely glowing review, but this workout was a bit different. Things I greatly enjoyed were the program: 25 minutes of cardio, followed by 10 minutes segements of arms, legs and abs. Also, the DVD version came equipped with a resistance band, which is necessary to participate in the workout. My criticism is that the whole DVD seems either rushed or was a production after-thought. The music is pretty generic and Denise's spoken introduction is part of the workout, you can skip it manually, but it isn't its own chapter. That's kind of annoying. As for the workout itself, it is very good. During the cardio, you jump around and sweat, all the while using the resistance band for simultaneous toning. The moves are simple, yet effective and the band is a wonderful piece of equipment to weave into your own personal home workout routine, it makes your muscles adjust, as weight routines cause muscle memory over time and your muscles grow accustomed and don't work as hard. Her workout group is made up of people who are thin and fit, but don't look super-ripped or sickly, which is nice and semi-realistic, not intimidating like others can be. She recommends a 6 day schedule, but I think that people who have been working out for a while or have some sort of fitness savvy can decide for themselves, though it is nice to have some guidelines for those just starting out or unsure of how to go about things. She jumps right in, so there is no real explanation section. While the moves are not extremely difficult, there are just barely enough reps to get it right, but that is something that will resolve itself over time. And my last bit of criticism is that Denise seems either tired or a bit disinterested in the workout, she didn't seem as into it as her previous videos. However, she does take the time to really explain the mucles being worked and proper form on her fellow workoutmates. I would like to think of this review as overall a positive one, I just think that if I were to read a review, I would like to know of the negative aspects, to make a well-informed decision.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fat-Burning Sensation!
Taking the intensity up a notch was something I really wanted to accomplish after I finished working out to the same workouts that Denise Austin did everyday on Lifetime TV. Her new video, "Power Zone: The Ultimate Metabolism Boosting Workout" has done just that. Using resistance bands during the whole workout, Denise brings the intensity up efficiently and effectively....enough that I was sweating in less than 10 minutes into the workout! During the entire 25 minutes of cardio, you're burning OVER 300 calories! I am serious - with the resistence band, fat gets a powerful punch!
Denise has you do 25 minutes of cardio, then 10 minute segments each for your legs, thighs, buttocks, and abdominals. After working out with Denise for over two years, I have to say that this workout is the best and most effective that I ever used. Although, I do have my disappointments in this one. I noticed that Denise seemed hurried and uninterested in the workout in some points of the video. The moves are quick and fast-paced and if you are doing the workout for the first time, you may feel like you're not able to keep up. Of course, you will get used to the moves in time - after the first workout I got used to it, so it's not something tremendously serious that you need to think over. Denise's workout mates on the video can annoy you enormously if you let them - they seem like they're in a trance during the whole workout and look more like fake supermodels than workout mates (you notice in many exercise videos that workout mates seem more tolerable and real - like mothers who workout or someone from the street who is fit.. but these women on this workout video seem like they have fake personalities).
Other than that, the workout is great - you definitely feel like your muscles were worked hard enough and that you had a real, complete workout.
Recommended fitness levels are at least intermediate. You need to have at least SOME exercise experience - if you are just starting out, I would recommend Denise Austin's Xtralite Exercise videos that are available at Amazon instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Workout!
The people who gave this DVD negative feedback must not be doing the video correctly! I am a Certified Personal Trainer and would recommend this video to anyone who wants to tone up and lose fat. Within 10 workouts, I could feel and see results and I've been working out for years and years! Denise is tremendously motivating and encouraging. The total video is about 55 minutes long, however the way the segments are set up, you can choose to do each section separately. Remember...give it 100% and you will look and feel better! Buy this DVD...it is so worth the money spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Workout DVD
I have been using this DVD for about a week and this is really a good DVD. It is really a good workout for those who hate to go to the gym and it is cheaper.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's great to walk three miles in your living room!
I have a reasonably large library of exercise videos and must rate this as one of my favorites. The workout is a good one in that I really work up a sweat and can feel the burn, yet it is easy to follow with good cues and steps that aren't too complicated. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't just exercise my legs, but also my arms, waist, and pretty much everywhere else, too. I also like the fact that it is possible to do the exercises with or without weights and can vary the intensity by making bigger or smaller movements. I am an avid walker, but living in New England means that I can't always actually walk outside so being able to get three miles in my living room is a very good thing! The only negative is that Leslie just plain talks too much which I find annoying at times. Fortunately, though, since you don't need every ounce of gray matter to follow the movements, it is easy enough to tune her out on those mornings when I would rather just exercise and not hear Leslie's banter.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love These Tapes and got Great Results!!
Okay, everyone, i've been reading all of the reviews and would like to say something first of all: Leslie is not annoying. shes a lovely instructor and a bit dorky but shes her own unique person and is great when it comes to this workout. i just watch what she does and listen to music. if you have a problem with it then do that too. its very simple. so to all of you complainers: get over it. I've been doing these tapes for 3 weeks and within 2 weeks i lost 8 pounds. may i add that a dedicated diet that suits you is also very effective. i am 16 years old...and i've had a medical problem for 2 years and never thought i'd get rid of weight. since i started these tapes i am motivated to loose and cant wait to reach my goal. (i started at 200 and im 5'6 which is not healthy for my age) now im 192 and it keeps going down and down and everyone i know is saying how fit im looking. it makes me feel great. if you have 30 minutes a day then i suggest that this will work great for you. also if you have a medical problem and need to start slow and everything the 1 mile would be perfect for you for a while but i do 2 miles a day and it is working great so make sure you get this tape if you are interested!!!!!!!!~

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Leslie Sansone Workout
Leslie is the "Queen of In-Home Walking." This is different than walking on a treadmill, but seems equally effective. You can also walk any day of the year, rain or shine, day or night. There are no limits.

Leslie travels all over the world promoting fitness and holds six certificates from the American College of Sports Medicine. She also owns Club Fitness and makes appearances on the QVC Home Shopping Channel.

After trying a few of Leslie Sansone's workouts, this is now my favorite workout.

This Super Fat Burning - 3 Mile workout took me to new places in my fitness level. I really saw some good results in the stomach area. I had to keep looking in the mirror to make sure it was true. This workout firms the upper and lower body, improves coordination and balance and boosts cardio strength. (47 minutes)

Since I'm not the queen of coordination, the Leslie Sansone workouts allow me to exercise without worrying about fancy footwork. If you can stand in one place and move forward, back and put your arms up and down, you can do this! Therefore, this is really for anyone! The use of weights really takes this video to a new level. This workout really does tighten and tone you all over.

I highly recommend this workout or the three workout set with weights. This workout is for anyone starting a new workout program or for anyone who just wants to have a little fun with their workouts. You just become one of the group and Leslie creates a very friendly, accepting environment. I really started to look forward to working out in such a positive environment and enjoy being in the presence of some positive energy, plus it gave me an added boost of "I can do this." The music also just keeps you moving!

If you have a 5' x 7' space anywhere near a TV, these are perfect. You don't need a lot of room like many aerobic videos require.

Leslie's workouts that add a smiley burst of energy to your day. If you are on your couch, you better be looking out for Leslie Sansone cause she is going to "come over and get you" off that couch! At least that is what she says. ;)

I sent my aunt the 1-mile workout and she now says that
she does the workout with my little second cousin who is
now living at her house. So apparently even kids love
Leslie's workouts. ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of all 4 of Leslie's workouts (so far!)
Last fall, when I first heard about Leslie's workout tapes, I bought the 3-DVD set of the 1-mile, 2-mile and 4-mile DVDs. I was able to move quickly from the 1-mile to the 2-mile, but going from there to the 4-mile proved much more challenging. I thought I'd try a 3-mile as a middle step until I could easily get through the 4-mile and bought this one earlier this year.

I love it! Things I like alot: 1) there are more people participating in the workout than in my other Sansone DVDs; 2) Leslie has MUCH more interaction with the people in the workout than in my other Sansone DVDs; 3) the set/studio where the DVD is filmed is a hundred times better than those in the other Sansone DVDs I have; 4) the transitions in music/pace are a hundred times better than in the other Sansone DVDs I have; 5) the music, while not hugely inspiring, is good; and 6) while it's a shallow and silly thing, this DVD is MUCH more up-to-date than the others and I don't have to look at terribly outdated workout outfits and hairdos anymore. :)

I have no major dislikes. After watching/listening to the DVD repeatedly over a course of months, there are LITTLE things that bug me like the fact that Leslie so often refers to "the girls" and ignores the fact that there is a man participating (Randy). I noticed that Randy was dressed differently than the girls (their outfits are all in a matching color scheme and by the same company), so I wondered if maybe Randy was a "fill-in" for someone who couldn't make it at the last minute and therefore Leslie was used to it being all girls and kept forgetting he was back there (he was in the back row).

All in all, a WONDERFUL exercise tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for those days...
when you don't want to think about it. I alternate this tape with other workouts (elliptical trainer, walking outdoors, biking) and it's a nice variation. The weights give it just enough "umph" and even when I'm unmotivated, I can usually make myself do this tape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga in Nature
The stunning beauty of the red rocks and panoramas of Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona Arizona makes this video one of the most beautiful yoga workouts to date! The blue mats are just striking against the background and that makes this quite visually pleasing.

If you love exercising in the evening, this workout is perfect to promote a general feeling of well-being and relaxation. Suzanne Deason has created a calming escape you can enjoy for 45 minutes.

While I can't say for sure that you will lose weight while using this particular video, I know you can condition your body with Yoga and Pilates.

I like the combination and have many DVDs and videos. So, I recommend this in addition to all the other workouts you own. Variety seems essential in keeping us all motivated!

The theory behind this workout is that yoga can be used for therapeutic applications. Being overweight has a lot to do with an imbalance in your body's physiology and an internal disconnection between the mind and body.

If you think about when you overeat it might be when you are feeling stressed. It is much easier to keep to your healthy nutrition plan when you feel calm and in control. I also have come to believe that when we are stressed, our bodies pack on the pounds.

So, this workout gives a calmness to your being and in this way you help to control the bodies healing process.

There are four workout levels:

Complete Workout - For anyone who has experience in yoga. All you need is a yoga mat.
Slightly Modified (1/4) - To build strength and stamina.
Partially Modified (1/2) - When your flexibility improves.
Fully Modified - If you have tight hips or hamstrings, you can use a strap, bricks
and a blanket.

All the workouts contain a 10 minute "Body and Breath" warm-up section to loosen the muscles and heat the core. The breathing cues are excellent and you will find yourself enjoying the deep cleansing breaths.

This is followed by "Active Yoga Conditioning." A mirror behind you is helpful at first until you learn to moves. Or you can just do some backwards and still see the screen. Many of the poses where chosen with larger bodies in mind. This is great for people who are just starting yoga. You will notice that three of the instructors are definitely more like the "normal size" woman.

It was comforting to me to see women who modified various poses as I often have to. Instead of feeling like I could not do the poses, I felt I was reaching a level that was comfortable for me. You may also find you can do some of the poses from the advanced level and some from the modified. You feel so proud of yourself when you can finally feel comfortable doing most of the advanced poses.

Finally you enter the 14 minute cool down phase called: "Balance and Relaxation."

During the workout you might notice a Personal Instructor Icon. On my DVD control I had to select the "ok" to get this feature to work. There is also a nice way to get to various workout levels. You just press the "angle" button.

Once you watch the complete workout/combination workout, you can then figure out which level you are at. After watching the combined workout, you will more than likely enjoy just working out with one instructor. You have the choice of four instructors.

I find that my yoga and Pilates workout "moments" have become so healing and nurturing. If you wish to make your setting even more comfortable and are familiar with yoga, I would recommend a nice duvet/comforter covered in a soft fabric. Once folded in half, this gives you a nice soft padded space on which you can place your yoga mat, etc. If you need props, there is information in the pamphlet that is included with the DVD.

Think of exercise as your own private mini-vacation and suddenly exercise is something you start to look forward to. You could also walk for 30 minutes before starting these exercises or walk in the morning and do this video at night.

An exercise program for the entire mind/body/spirit connection. The 16-page full-color pamphlet also contains a mini-nutrition guide, tips on healthy eating and a weight management guide.

Develops concentration, patience, body awareness, muscle tone and a sense of emotional calm.

If you are new to Yoga, this might be the best place to start. I can also recommend "Pilates Conditioning for Weight Loss" with Suzanne Deason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video
Excellent video with 3 sections to the workout.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should simply be called Yoga conditioning. Soothing.
I'm sure the marketing gurus felt they had to include "for weight loss" in the title. That really doesn't belong. This DVD is more about the smooth, gentleness of yoga. This isn't power yoga. Please read the other reviews regarding the slowness of this DVD. I like its calmness. The music is soothing too. I'm turned off by quick, fat blasting yoga. Fast yoga is like slow aerobics. I like the poses and the length of time they're held. Deeson gives excellent instruction. She's very thorough, even to the point of telling you when to breathe. I don't think that detracts. Her voice is soothing. My only problem with this DVD is that I can't access Deeson's further studio instruction in the modifications. According to the help section of the DVD, it states press the enter button when you see the icon in the corner, which looks like a solid white. On my screen, it's not solid white and when I push enter, nothing happens. Maybe my DVD player is too new or there's a problem with the DVD.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ehhhh ok
I wasn't crazy about this video. It is good for beginners, but for someone who has practiced yoga before, it just didn't hit the spot.

It WAS painfully too slow (like another reviewer said) and also even the most advanced yoga person performed modified yoga positions that I felt watered down the yoga quite a bit--I did not get even the stretch that I wanted.

The idea of using different views is nice, but I wouldn't recommend this video to anyone I know.

2-0 out of 5 stars maybe for a couple of pounds, not for the very large
I understand that i may have missed out, but as an absolute beginner, and someone who is very overweight (over 100 pounds, i admit it) I was only able to make it about 15 minutes through the workout. I found that there was little explanation of what was going on, and often, by the time i could see what i was supposed to do, they had already moved on to the next position. also i found that certain body imperfections made it near impossible to do some of the poses correctly, even on the beginner level. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instructional Video, But Boring Workout
This tape is excellent as an introduction to the pilates and yoga moves used in The Method series. You will learn the proper forms and breathing patterns. However, because of all the time devoted to instruction, it is not a workout you will do more than a few times (depending on how long it takes you to become accustomed to the correct forms).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD
I was getting tired of my workouts(consisting of weight training/running)and thought I'd give Pilates a try. AT FIRST, I didn't find the workout challenging but there a few things I wasn't doing to maximize my results. (i.e. keeping heels off the floor when in sit-up positions-this enagages the quads continuously). Those of you that say it is not challenging are not performing the exercises correctly or not fully engaging the muscles(which takes a lot of mental concentration). I'm very happy with this DVD and encourage those who are not to give another try with the above mentioned in mind. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well-chaptered DVD
I am a big Jennifer Kries fan. I love her newer series (Pilates Method/New Method) and her book, Pilates Plus Method. I tried in the past to get into some of her older stuff- Precision Toning and Precision Sculpting- and while I thought she gave (as always) great instruction, the workouts were very long and I just couldn't see myself making the commitment on a regular basis.

I just recently got this DVD and am now over the moon. It is very well chaptered. If your DVD has a programmable play feature, it's easy to split up the workouts so you don't have to do over an hour (Precision Toning) or forty minutes (Precision Sculpting). Some of my favorite combinations are: the upper body work from PS combined with the side kicks from PT; the matwork/Method Toning (minus the side kicks) from PT; and Toning Essentials from PT and the pelvic lifts/ballet segments from PS. And while figuring out the specific titles/chapters on some DVDs can be a nightmare, this is pretty straightforward: Title 1 is PT, Title 2 is PS, and the chapters for each segment are numbered on the title menu they provide.

Though some may already have other Pilates workouts (even other Jennifer Kries workouts) I still recommend this tape. The side kicks segment alone is worth the money- I could not believe how much my thighs and buttocks burned the first time I did her sequence, and I'd been a Pilates "veteran" for quite some time.

One final comment: when these two workouts were first released, everyone kept going on about how they were "fusion" workouts, combining Pilates, dance and yoga. Having done them, I can guarantee that they are almost completely straight up Pilates (with a little dance thrown in at the end of Precision Sculpting). Yes, we do use Child's Pose a few times, but that move has been used in "pure" Pilates practices for years. Not that this takes anything away from the workouts- I just wouldn't want someone to be disappointed by the lack of yoga on this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-nonsense Pilates
I agree with the person who said this is like having a 1:1 trainer. Jennifer Kries is no-nonsense about her explanations and is very clear about breathing and how to hold the positions. No, there's no music, and no, she doesn't smile like a robot and talk endlessly like some exercise personalities do. That is why I find this DVD workout appealing. If you are just wanting to learn the basics of Pilates, this is a challenging workout you will want to do long after you learn the positions. Also, it's great that there are 2 workouts, the "Sculpting" and the "Toning." More advanced Pilates devotees will probably find this boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's not hard enough. . .
. . . you're not doing ir correctly, according to Joseph Pilates. I agree that the negative reviews here are unwarrented. I have had several Pilates tapes/DVDs AND I have used a certified personal trainer. I am fit and limber -- but I still sweat to this video. Perhaps the problem is not that the video is too easy, but that Kris does not stress enough that you have to be very precise with your movements (or that it's too easy for viewers to skip over that part -- particularly on the DVD version). I've never had a problem with her explainations, but maybe that's because I have had the benefit of one-on-one training. It's a great video for use between trips to the gym/studio. If you know what you're doing, you can use it as a guide and advance your movements according to your level -- even use equipment -- without being distracted by "exciting" graphics and music. But only if you're serious. If you're looking for a hand-holding video, you might want to look at something else. ... Read more

This well-designed program combines fast-paced yoga moves for fat-burning, hatha yoga poses for strength and flexibility, and stability ball exercises for core conditioning in three segments that can be done in one 60-minute session, or separately. Segment 1 builds patterns based on strong yoga poses such as the Warrior and Balancing Stick, adding lifts and lunges at a fast pace so that you're breathing faster and working the muscles simultaneously. Segment 2 is strength training by holding poses. Segment 3 focuses on core strength with a stability ball. Some familiarity with yoga is helpful--Austin doesn't give much instruction about breathing or the fine points of the poses--but not required. Although Austin talks nonstop, as always, her voice is quieter than usual and more fitting for this workout. (The repetitive, rhythmic music, however, is distracting rather than supportive.) Recommended for intermediate exercisers because no modifications are shown, and many of the poses are challenging. --Joan Price ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good workout, but not yoga!
I'm a big Denise Austin fan, so I was prepared to love this video, but I've got to tell you--I'm pretty disappointed. This was a good workout, but there was very little yoga to do with it. While the postures and moves are based in yoga, it seems a stretch to call the workout itself yoga; there is no emphasis on breath, there is no emphasis on posture or correct form. It is definitely not a beginner workout. It is a good aerobic workout, and yes, all of my muscles feel it today, but if you're looking for a good YOGA workout that will yield the same results, try Crunch's Yoga videos--they're great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Give your muscles a new challenge.......
As an experienced intermediate exerciser, this workout was a little something different. It begins with a faster-paced 30 minute yoga workout that does increase your heart rate a little and challenges your muscles. Sometimes however, the faster pace interupts the usual flow that yoga has, and you kind of stumble into the moves the first few times. For safety I recommend practicing the moves by pausing the vcr throughout the first section the first time using it. Honestly, I do wish Denise held the stretches longer. I can feel the strength and flexibility benefits though, and after the first time, I had a mild soreness the next day to show I'd challenged my muscles, but no lasting pain of any kind. The second workout on the tape is a 15 minute strength and flexibility workout, where poses are challenging and held longer. It challenges the arms as well, which is good, to provide balance since the first workout used mainly the lower body muscles. The tape also includes a workout for abdominals and total body conditioning, which recommends a "stability ball", this portion gives your abdominals and back a good workout. All in all, this video can add something different to your workout routine, once you get used to the rushed pacing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I absolutely love this DVD. The workout is quick (30 mins or 15 mins segments)and invigorating. I would not recommend this DVD to beginners, however. Many of the moves need to be familiar to have the best effect. I would recommend Denise Austin's Yoga Essentials for someone who wants to learn the basic moves in yoga. Once the basics are learned, following along with this DVD is easy.
I do wish there were alternative exercises for those who do not have the exercise ball in the 15 min ab segments. I skip this part.
Contrary to all the negative comments about Denise's perkiness, I find her helpful and uplifting, and she keeps me on task. The reminders about body positions are necessary.
I will recommend this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to yoga and tool to get in condition
If you enjoy Dennis Austin, then definately try this video. As a beginner to intermediate level exerciser, I found this video to be challenging and enjoyable. I appreciated Dennis's encouragement and marveled at the simplicity and effectiveness of the movements executed over time. I used this program as the foundation for my routine over a 10 month period and after a while, added other videos for variety, however, I always came back to this as a favorite. Thanks Dennis for helping me achieve my fitness goals beyond what I thought I could do! Now that summer is getting too humid for my outdoor routine, I'm upgrading to a DVD version. Rene King

1-0 out of 5 stars Crikey!
I've never written a review before, but I feel very strongly about this workout video and think everyone should know about it. Why? 'Cause it sucks. I'm not joking. Denise Austin is like a mad woman in this video... she's all over the damned place and her voice is constantly grating. Yap-Yap-Yap... Yoga is supposed to be relaxing, but this woman is like a crazy dyslexic hurricane who's all over the place. I'll probably give it another shot... the workout itself looks cool, but it's just too damned fast. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic and easy to follow
I liked the pace, the information, and the quality of the camera work. This is a well shot video. I will be looking for future editions to the line.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good thing
I like the For Dummies series. They are far more superior than the Idiot's Guide due to the way the books are laid out and the authors the publisher chooses. Having this "bias" already, I was quite intrigued when I saw the DVD. What the heck, let's try it out. And the result is... not bad.

It's quick and dirty work out on all parts of the abdominal. I got a kick out of it. There are about 10 exercises in all plus warm up and cool down. The music is light, the teacher smiles a lot (a bit much really), no fuss no frill, just getting down to business. On the negative side, there are no pauses really between exercises. You have to stop your DVD player between exercises especially if you are a beginner. My guess is For Dummies is saving on run time. But at 12 bucks per DVD, I won't complain ... too much. :) Overall, I'm quite satisfied. You'll like it if you have some training in abs already; you'll have an easier time to catch on. It might be a bit hard for a beginner given the pace of the DVD. But it shouldn't stop you from giving this a shot. Just remember to pause in between exercises. Oh and one more thing. The DVD doesn't offer much exericse on the lower back (the opposite muscle group). You should always work out on opposite muscle group to avoid imbalance of muscle strength. So, do a few on your own. There are much written in the way of what lower back exercises are, so I'll spare you the details here. Have fun, and have a good sweat!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
My only introduction to Tai Chi was what I saw in "The Calendar Girls" movie, so I was a rank beginner when I bought this DVD. Because of bad knees, I was unable to do Yoga, so decided to try this out.

Scott is a wonderful teacher and I was able to follow along right from the beginning. I've used the DVD, morning & night, for 4 weeks, and have noticed a great deal of improvement in muscle tone in back, abs and especially the knees. They are stronger and no longer have that annoying tendency to buckle on stairs. I am overweight, btw, and unlike Yoga, this does not present a problem with doing this type of exercise. Hope these comments helps someone make the decision to buy . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I've never done Tai Chi before so I was a little skeptical about how much I would get out of this video. I bought this DVD yesterday and I've done the PM section twice and the AM section once. I felt energized after doing the AM stuff this morning and I am looking forward to doing it again tomorrow morning. The instructor has a very pleasing voice, is great looking, the music is very pleasant and the beach is gorgeous. He explains each movement clearly. I'm also getting a beginner's video so that I can learn more about the philosophy of Tai Chi.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Effective
I have taken tai chi at 3 different times in my life from teachers with vastly differing styles. One was quietly meditational, another more dance oriented (he was a ball-room dance instructor) and the last was a martial arts instructor who taught a strict, rigid class that I survived for about 2 months. That was 12 years ago and I havn't done much in the way of exercise since. Now as part of a get-healthy-before-I-die program, I picked up the video cassette of Discover Tai Chi PM.

It was a very nice surprise. I had never heard of Scott Cole but his vital, cheery aproach to Tai Chi was very accessible and easy to follow. He gave an adequate amount of information about the philosohical basics (it is after all an exercise/health tape and not a Taoist teachings video :-} ) and it was incorporated into the exercises them selves. The movements flow nicely and are repeated several times in the introductory segments. They are then tied together into a form of sorts and repeated at the end over some above average New Age meditation music.

Cole is quite energetic, easy going and appears to really enjoy the act of teaching. And he has a pleasant voice that is easy to understand.

Now for the really important information. I feel great every time I do this work out: energized and relaxed at the same time. It was the perfect relaxation tape for this sedentary, moderately stressed out, over weight (but decreasing...finally) 40-something female. It would probably be best to have some familiarity with tai chi, although it is by no means necessary. It was for that reason (my perception that a certain amount of basic knowledge was assumed) and the fact that Sensei is still in my head barking at me to do the form seriously and correctly, that I gave the tape 4 stars. For sheer enjoyment and effectiveness, I'd give it 5.

The DVD format would be great as it is easier to find specific segments and more forgiving of endless replays. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great when you get the hang of it!
This is a lot like Sweat and Shout with Disco music. I was VERY confused when I first tried it. In fact, I was so confused that I didn't even break a sweat because I spent too much time trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. The second time I did it, it was a lot better. "Shake Your Booty" is so much fun! My 5 year old son does it with me because he loves that song so much.

There's also 3 high-intensity intervals, which he never did in the "Sweatin' to the Oldies" series. This is supposed to make you burn fat more effectively. I've lost 8 pounds in 3 weeks from doing this every day and I don't have a whole lot more to lose. It's a low-impact, high-intensity workout. You get the same workout without hurting your joints and back.

Great buy!! I'd recommend this to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous workout
I used this tape a few years ago and just recently found a copy of it again. It is fun enough to do over and over, even every day as I do. It is a trick to get used to the moves the first few times you do it, but once you get the hang of it it totally flows. Richard takes you through a series of highs and lows so that just when you feel you're about to break, he calms you down a bit; then by the next song you're on fire again and ready to kick it up! It is a long workout, and that too takes time to get used to, but as such it is very effective. Recommended to anyone who wants to lose weight, especially those of us who are VERY overweight and hate excercise!

5-0 out of 5 stars I forgot how fun it is to dance
I just did the workout for the first time, and I tell you, Richard Simmons between making me smile and having so much fun dancing, I barely felt like I was working out besides the sweat streaming down my face. There is also a surprise ending. I think you will love to do this on a daily basis.I can't wait to do it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars get up and dance
have one month without cigarettes after smoking 41 years and 3 weeks of doing disco sweat...needless to say i couldnt exercise when i smoked.

this is the best of the several simmons tapes ive gotten.the moves are simple to follow and the camera pans on the entire body instead of closeup of faces(which do not help in seeing what steps he's doing) you do sweat and it feels great..
have done these exercises every day for last month.
i especially like richards tapes because he has real looking people there. wish there was older people in this video(like me)
but hey richard and i are of an age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good with some technical problems
I have loved Kathy Smith workout tapes/discs for years. I'm glad she did this type of a workout but I have a few issues with it: 1) The lower body section relies too heavily on squats which can lead to an imbalance in muscle development, 2) the abdominal section is not that great, 3) the stretching sections are pretty fast, 4) sometimes I wished for a better view of proper positioning or technique.

Technically, there are a couple of problems with the DVD: 1) The main menu is incomplete. Hello! What's the problem here???? 2) Free stability ball workout? I don't think so. At least not on my disk and apparently not on some of the other reviewers' copies either. These kinds of mistakes are foolish in this day and age.

I did think that the upper body work out was unique and challenging. I also think that it is fairly easy to scale this workout to your fitness level. She's no nonsense, not annoying, and they keep the silly production stuff to a minimum.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOOOOOOOOVE this workout!
I am new to exercise, having dropped just over 50 pounds in the last year...and I've always hated exercise...until just recently. (Now I work out 5-6 days a week, and I crave it!) I started with the DVD from the weight loss program I was on, and did that for about 2 months until boredom set in. Then I discovered Kathy Smith! Lift Weight to Lose Weight is the 5th Kathy Smith video I've purchased, and is already my favorite. I love the programmable feature--one of my other DVD's was supposed to have that, and it didn't work. I love the squat section, the glute section (OH MY WORD! The glute section!), the standing upper body section (she nearly kills me on the triceps part every time); I haven't tried the stability ball workout yet, so I don't really feel qualified to comment on that. I don't know about anyone else, but when I finish this workout, I feel fantastic! I know it's making a difference...I was sore, GOOD sore for at least two days, the first few times I did the routines. I'm so glad I purchased this one--it was money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout!
I have no time to workout as a stay at home mom of two kids - 27 and 9 months old. I bought this DVD to try to get a little weight training in and in only 20 minutes I get a great workout! I love it! If I can find 20 minutes to do it anyone can. The DVD is easy to follow and Kathy is not annoying at all. I was able to find the bonus routines quite easily, you need to go to the next screen(there is a little arrow on the bottom). I like that I can do a 10 min. segment on arms and a 10 mins segment on legs and I'm done, or I can do all arms or all legs. Either way it is only 20 mins!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finding Incomplete Menu
A couple of reviews noted that there was no stability ball workout and an incomplete menu. I had the same issue and then finally figured it out. What appears to be the main menu is actually just the first of 2 main menus. To get to the second you need to select the triangle at the bottom. This takes you to the second menu and allows you to access the stability ball workout ( which is fun).

5-0 out of 5 stars Muscles Have Love/Hate Relationship with this DVD
Kathy Smith is one of my favorites. I like that this video challenges my muscles to the point where I can feel them the next day. If you don't enjoy the next day "good" hurt, you can use lighter weights or no weights at all.

In spite of the fact that the DVD cover boasts of a non existent 20-minute stability ball workout, I highly recommend this workout DVD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Beginner Series
Bryan Kest is a gifted teacher and inspiring man. This series is perfect for the beginning Yogi. Kest provides plenty of explanation at the start of both the Step-by-Step and 20-Minute Beginner series. You enter each workout with an understanding of the movements and in the right frame of mind. Once I had listened to the intro a few times, I just jumped straight into the workout on my DVD player.

I found the Beginner workout challenging and was thankful for Kest's voice guiding me throughout. As I was new to yoga when I bought the DVD, the series helped my body become familiar with basic Vinyasa flow movements. I found the flexibility and strength starting to improve in my arms and legs just after doing the workout a few times.

I highly recommend this tape for the beginner Yogi! It's gotten me hooked on yoga and I've already started doing some of Bryan Kest's other series! I've also noticed how yoga is affecting other parts of my life. I find myself feeling more calm and relaxed after each workout than I have felt in a long time!

3-0 out of 5 stars If you have done any Yoga at all, don't bother.
Bryan is inspiring and he has a lot of good things to say. I just wish he would say it in the first session and then let me practice yoga in the rest of the sessions(four included on this DVD).

I've done Yoga on and off for years and recently got into power yoga. This is waaaaaaaaaaaay to slow and by the time you feel any heat, you are done. If you are a beginer it would be pefect for about 2-3 weeks and then you'll need to move on to something more. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the usual Rodney Yee..
I had Rodney's original Back Care video and I bought this DVD to use for business travel so I could play it on my laptop in my hotel. It was WAY too slow moving for me. I plan to return it to Amazon. I was very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good DVD
This DVD has really helped me with my back problems. The excercises shown are gentle and useful. I have chronic back pain, and in order to avoid, and not take pain killers, I do yoga. I have used this DVD, and as soon as I finish one of the three routines, my pain is gone. The only thing that I don't like about Rodney's approach on this DVD is that he shows some very weird excercises, and sometimes you feel like you aren't doing anything. The first routine feels like you didn't do a thing. The second routine is great. The third one has a lot of akward positions, for which you need a chair and a king size pillow. I have never been to a yoga class where you need such items, so I find it weird, and not too effective. However, overall, it is a good DVD (but he has a better DVD, try the Yoga for Athletes, also from Rodney. It is excellent.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Three workouts focused on maintaining a healthy back
Excellent yoga instructor Rodney Yee offers this 3-part workout focused on strengthening back muscles to maintain a healthy back. He utilizes props (blanket, bolster, chair, brick, strap) to make the poses more gentle and accessible to those at all levels of fitness (although absolute beginners should stick to his previous video, Back Care Yoga for Beginners).

The first 16-minute section concentrates on simple stretches to warm up your back muscles. Poses are done either while lying on the floor or in a seated position, and Rodney uses a blanket to increase range of motion. The second workout is a bit longer (around 18 minutes) and places greater emphasis on strength moves. It begins with simple backbends (eg, cat pose) and moves on to standing poses modified by use of a chair; it ends with a series of lying stretches. In the final workout, Rodney uses a wider variety of props, including TWO chairs and both the blanket AND the bolster. This is a slow-moving, approximately 16-minute practice which focuses on relaxation through practicing a small number of poses for a longer period of time.

At times, Rodney's reliance on props is a bit distracting, particularly while you are trying to relax during the final section. However, he always allows ample time to relocate the props inbetween poses, and his use of the props is definitely beneficial at some points, such as during the second practice. Rodney's manner is extremely calm and relaxing, and his voiceover is always perfectly in sync with his on-screen performance. One minor criticism is that he doesn't offer mirrored instruction, but this is easily ignored given his otherwise excellent cuing. Overall, this is a very good workout by a master yoga instructor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original
I was disappointed in this DVD. I also own Rodney Yee's first back care workout "Back Care Yoga for Beginners" (1998, VHS), which is much better. "Yoga for Back Care" relies too heavily on props, moves very slowly, and doesn't cover enough poses. If you're looking for a good back care workout, go back to the original tape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle and Excellent
I checked here for reviews before buying this. There weren't any, so I took a chance. I'm glad I did. And since no one else has posted a review, I finally decided to in case anyone else would like a user's opinion. When I first tried this routine, I didn't think it was going to do much. It is very conservative. But it is also very safe. It avoids some of the front bending and stretching postures that can be dangerous for low back problems. Yoga Journal's routines often go in and out of postures faster than I like, and at first I wasn't sure I liked that aspect of the routine either. Ater doing this routine for about a month, though, I can say that my low back discomfort has eased off greatly. This DVD gets the credit. It is an excellent combination of equalized stretching on both sides of your body, plus relaxation for your upper and low back. The entire workout runs nearly an hour, which I don't always have time for. But it is broken into three segments, so you can do one or two only. Still, make the time for the full routine if you can. It's worth it. You don't need to do it every day. A few times a week has been enough for me to feel the benefit. Finally, the setting is beautiful, the production quality is high, and Rodney Yee is a pleasant presence (important for something you listen to over and over again). I highly recommend the DVD for anyone looking for back-related flexibility, relaxation, and restoration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great "non-traditional", parts toning
My first Jennifer Kries purchases were her newest set, The New/Pilates Method. Between those three videos, she covers a lot of ground- anyone who enjoys yoga, Pilates and dance would do well to take a look at those. When I heard about about Target Specifics, I wasn't sure that I would find a whole lot that I didn't already have in that series. Curiousity got the best of me, and I made the purchase.

This is a great DVD to have in your collection. If you're short on time, you can pick the area that you need to work on that day. If you want to make this a full workout, you can use the entire program.

For abs, Kries includes almost the entire Intermediate Pilates mat program. As with all Pilates programs, proper form is important here if you want to feel the work. If you're new to Pilates, you may want to watch this section a few times before you join in.

For the arms and upperbody, Kries uses most of the Standing Sculpting series as well as a few yoga-inspired moves. A lot of people have mixed feelings about this work. It would be very difficult to get large muscles or even gain significant upper body strength using these light dumbbells (3 to 5 lbs is the maximum recommended). However, proper technique will contribute to overall integrated strenght, that is, properly using your center as well as your limbs. Again, this may be better done after viewing a few times.

At first glance, there is quite a bit of repetition between the Thighs and Hips section, and that can be annoying. However, upon closer examination, there are enough differences to justify doing both sections. The Hips section is predominantly ballet and Pilates movements. The moves here concentrate on lateral movement, thus more effectively targeting the hips. A bunch of plies as well as tendus and degages (ballet kicks) are performed here. You may want to modify if you have sensitive knees.

The Thighs section uses a small bit of ballet and Pilates, concentrating on yoga. This section includes Sun Salutations (sneaking in some upper body strengthening as well), Awkward Chairs/Fierce Pose and Lunges (again, modify if your knees are not your strong suit).

There is quite a bit of overlap between this and Kries' newer offerings. However, it would be a good way to introduce yourself to her fusion-style in small pieces before you take the plunge into some of her longer tapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workout!
I've been using this DVD for a quick 15 or 30 minute exercise every day, and it works wonders. I alternate which routine I do (stomach, arms, hips or thighs) for a total "toned" look.

Jennifer Kries is a great instructor. She speaks in terms that someone new to pilates can understand, and really gives you motivation without being annoyingly perky. I've been using this DVD for a couple months now, and haven't tired of it. Thats a record for me.

Since I started this DVD, I look more fit and toned than I have in years. My husband is very impressed with the results, especially on my butt. I highly recommend this for anyone at any fitness level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Challenging 4-Spot-Toning Workout
Jennifer Kries has created a challenging intermediate to advanced workout in response to requests for workouts to address specific areas of the body. If you are looking for a great full-body workout, you can do all four workouts one after the other. If you are short on time or just want to work on one area of your body, you can choose from four workouts:

Abs (15 minutes)
Arms (15 minutes) - Need 1-3lb weights
Hips (15 minutes)
Thighs (15 minutes)

You will recognize many of the signature "Method" postures and exercises in this workout, however there are quite a few surprises. Not only are all the exercises even more precise than before, they seem to be the "next" challenge. The pace is slightly faster at times and the "dégagé" reaches a new level of intensity.

Some of the Exercises:

The Hundred
Roll-Up
Leg Circles
Rolling Like a Ball
Double-Leg Lower Lift
CrissCross
Active Moving Cat
Active Cat with Yoga Press
Down Dog
Exercises from the Side Series for Legs
Swimming
Sun Salutation
Standing Sculpting Series
Chest Expansion
Boxing
Plié Series (makes you feel like you are doing ballet)

It is helpful to have Jennifer Kries' new book: Pilates Plus Method to learn the names of all her exercises and read the finer details of how your body should feel as you work through each exercise. She also gives excellent advice about the dégagé:

"Try to feel as if you were pushing your foot through the sand on the beach, moving with great resistance." (from her new book)

There is hardly time to give extra advice, but Jennifer still manages to give you tips throughout this workout. If you have been doing her exercise videos over the years you will almost "hear her advice in your mind" as you go through the exercises.

If you are just starting to exercise with Jennifer Kries try:

The Method - Pilates: Precision Sculpting (1996)
The Method - Pilates: Precision Toning (1996)
The Method - All in One Workout (1997)
The Method - Precision Yoga (1998)
Pilates Method and 3-Dimensional Toning Box Set (2002)

The Method Pilates "Target Specifics" seems to be the most advanced workout I've tried so far when I do all four sections in one hour. If you can make it through the list above, you are ready for this workout. Once you complete Target Specifics, you will reach a new level of confidence and fitness. For me, this was the next level in my Pilates practice. The drums keep you motivated and keep you at the pace you need to be to burn those calories! Definitely an intermediate to advanced workout.

If you are just starting to do Pilates, it might be difficult to learn the moves and keep up with the fast pace. Start with some of the slower paced workouts from 1996 and learn the basics. I'd also recommend finding the Winsor Pilates workouts because they are excellent for anyone who is just discovering these amazing exercises.

Results from The Method workouts include:

Flat, firm stomach without having to do sit-ups or crunches
Defined buns without lunges
Sculpted Legs without bouncy aerobic exercises
Tones arms without heavy weights
Improved posture and flexibility. Even your feet become more flexible.
Mind and Body Healing - Your mind becomes calm and your body feels invigorated.

If you are looking for a Pilates/Ballet/Yoga challenge, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most empowering, challenging, and effective DVD so far!
I'd done other pilates DVD's before, and enjoyed them, but there are only so many moves you can do. I just love this combination of pilates, yoga, and ballet exercises.... they all prioritize form, strength, and flexibility. If you want toned arms (which most pilates vidoes neglect), this is the DVD for you! Even though you may be working on legs with simple ballet moves, holding your arms out gracefilly is toning them at the same time. You really feel it.
I love Jennifer's attitude, she's direct, pleasant, inspiring, and not over the top. The music, a simple drumbeat, fades into the background (which is great after the 20th time) and helps with timing.
Someone else here wrote that they'd tried it once and never would again. Maybe it would help to use a beginner pilates video and save this one for when you've mastered the first one. This is an intermediate skill level, which I was ready for. It's my favorite Workout and I will be looking for more from the Method Series!

I liked this workout. The moves were challenging and increased my flexibity with constant use. I use 2 pound ankle and wrist weights to increase the intensity.
My only complaint is that it tended to be a bit monotonous at times. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent workout but has some flaws
I have Leslie's earlier "Walk Away The Pounds" 1,2 & 3-mile tapes, and I like those better than this set. It seems to me that she has made a decision to "simplify" the workouts on the "Express" set, making them (for me, anyway) quite monotonous. The 1-mile tape is very, very easy and I would not recommed buying it separately, as you will be ready for more of a challenge very quickly. The 2-mile tape is better--it's billed as the "brisk walk" and it does feel like a good workout by the end--but again, the moves are extremely repetetive--just marching in place, side steps, knee lifts and kicks. These are the same basic moves as in her earlier tapes, but there she made them a little more varied by adding more arm movements, single vs. double side steps, etc. I also dislike the music, which I don't find very tuneful at all.
The tapes also utilize the "stretchy band," which is a long, rubber-esque band you use for upper-body stretches. I do like this and feel it's helping to give me some much-needed upper-body strength.
I haven't gotten up to the 3-mile tape yet, but will assume it's along the same lines as the 1 and 2-mile.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moving on up
The video is great for people that is starting out...but the downfall about this video is that once you do it over and over ..your body adjust and it becomes too easy and you will have a stand still in my opinion and you must move on too bigger and better things...but it is good for beginners...

5-0 out of 5 stars I Highly Recommend This Set for Those Who
I bought this set because I already had Leslie's Walk Away The Pounds set and wanted to do something different. This comes with the 1 mile, 2 mile (combined in one dvd), 3 mile DVD and a purple stretchie band.

Leslie does the same moves as she does in the Walk Away the Pounds set but uses the stretchie band instead of water weights. I have done all 3 of the workouts and I always feel energized after doing them. The only negative I can come up with is that Leslie simply talks too much. After learning the routine, I always mute the sound and play my own music because I get annoyed by the contant chatter.

I will admit that Leslie seems like a very nice and genuine person and I don't mind her letting you know what steps you are getting ready to do, but the constant banter about how great the "workout buddies" are etc. I get bored with after the first 2 times of doing the workout.

I used Leslie's workout tapes when I was 50 pounds heavier and I hadn't exercised in ages. Her tapes along with healthy eating habits helped me suceed in losing the weight. If Leslie comes out with more sets, and I'm sure she will, I will definately buy them!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the BEST ONE YET!
Walk Away the Pounds Express is Leslie's best. It is so motivating. The music, the walkers, the program for 1 mile, 2 miles and 3 miles are just great. Leslie keeps you motivated as you walk with her and all her walkers. I have many of Leslie's videos and I love them all but Express is my favorite. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Heart Pumping Workout!
This is a great workout. I was a little aprehensive being a "Get Ripped" Freak. I thought nothing could beat the advance workout of that, but I was wrong. This workout was better because it wasn't as long and there are a lot more intricate moves that targets more critical areas. Of course I enjoy Billy's encouraging words and the moves are more sharp and precise. I didn't sweat as much as I do with the "Get Ripped Advance" but my heart was pounding a mile a minute and I felt really "worked".

This is a great addition to anyone's workout collection. Once again Billy doesn't disappoint. Try it, you'll love it. I've lost 28 pounds eating a sensible diet and working out to Taebo every morning for 4 months along with going to the gym.

This workout truly brings results!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow, is right, even his daughter Shellie is sweating
I have added Tae Bo to my work out and have really worked my way up from, just watching through many parts, to at least walking in place in some parts, to jogging while he did his leg kicks to now being able to get all the way through a 50 minute work out with out my heart coming out of my body. You will lose weight and inches and feel really great. This tape is a great addition to his normal insanity and his daughter Shellie is really hurtin' for certain so you know they are getting in a great workout along with you.As always Billy is the most encouraging coach on any tape I have
