Denise Austin leads a30-minute workout to lift, tighten, and tone buns. Although it is titled "yoga," it's really a series of varied buttock and thigh exercises--some yoga, some not--that use body weight and balance. If you're an Austin fan seeking a good gluteal workout, you'll like adding this to your collection, but if you're really looking for yoga, Yoga Buns falls short. Austin demonstrates the poses well enough, but her constant, cheerleading patter ("Make it work for the cheeks, for the buns, tight tushies!" and "Think of a tree, beautiful tree, hold it up!" for example) runs counter to the meditative aspect of yoga. Austin gives good alignment instructions, but never includes breathing and never connects with the serenity or spirituality of yoga. Recommended if you're looking for a half hour targeting the buns and you like Denise Austin. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
I absolutely love this video. It really works. You feel results the first time you do it and the second time you actually see the results! This is not a traditional yoga video- however some traditional yoga poses are done. I think my favorite part about this video is that not only the glutes get a thorough uplifting workout-but almost every exercise in this tape works the abs as well! Not to mention stretches you out completely. I can't say enough good things about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice workout
This is a fun workout, the only complaint I have with it is Denise's over use of the words related to buns. I don't know if this was an angle to use to market it, but it gets too much emphasis in her instruction. That aside, it is a fun workout and really gets you working. If you don't like Denise, avoid it. I like her so I don't mind her peppiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Results
I bought this DVD two weeks ago and have been doing it almost everyday. Denise recommends that you do it three times a week, but it is so invigorating, that I want to do it everyday. It is really effective and you feel like you've done something after you're finished. I noticed results after only two workouts! I highly recommend this DVD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Non-traditional yoga
I have been practising yoga for 3 years now. I like the deep breathing and calming meditative effect that this type of exercise provides. I purchased this tape thinking that it would be along the same lines as other yoga tapes I have, but with more emphasis on the lower body. I was sadly dissappointed. The routine is fast paced with little emphasis on breathing, so much so that I would hesitate to put the word 'yoga' in the title. About half way through the tape I turned it off and resumed my yoga workout with my old tapes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tape
I may be biased because I like yoga moves but I really don't like all the meditating and new age spiritual ways that is can be presented. This tape doesn't do that. Yoga is really just saying that the workout involves some yoga moves. It totally can help your fannie area but it is up to the viewer to tighten and use that area. If you are able to concentrate your efforts I think it is a worthwhile tape. Thanks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars classic workout, great dvd
leisa hart's STEEL workouts were my favorites during the 1990's, and i was so happy when i saw that some of her STEEL titles were now in dvd format....they are classics, and they give me a great legs workout....my buns are still sore 2 days later, and i really enjoyed the options available with this disk, a great great DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars so cool, love Leisa Hart, love the old "STEEL" videos
Leisa Hart is my favorite instructor, and it's so cool to have two of her old "STEEL" videos put onto one DVD. Hart's cueing is so good, and her style of teaching is very comforting. I love most of the Buns of Steel videos, but the ones lead by Leisa Hart are truly the best. This is a great dvd and is well worth it. 2 thumbs up!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHO'S BETTER THAN KATHY?
Rather than jump on the bandwagon right away, Kathy Smith always takes her time and produces a quality workout. She packs alot in under 30 minutes. As the title suggest this targets the abs or the "core". You get some benefits for the legs but you core will feel it! Smith is a careful, detailed and motivating teacher. I have several Pilates tapes and it finally clicked with this one. I finally managed to scoop" my abdomen and "engage" my powerhouse. And, while you are sitting or reclined the whole time you will sweat. Here's hoping Smith releases an extended full-body Pilates tape in the near future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to Pilates
Pilates is all new to me. I was psyched to see that Kathy Smith was doing a video, and was even more excited to see that it was geared towards someone at my fitness level. (Beginner/Intermediate) I'd have to agree that if you were already familiar with pilates, you may not get much from this video, however if you're looking for a sequence of pilates moves geared at working the abs, I can't see how you couldn't benefit from this tape. She gives great instruction in the beginning on form. It was easy for me to feel like I was doing the moves right, and she does so well on stressing the breathing. (Breathe out - breathe in...great cues!) I viewed the entire video, but wasn't able to complete it in entirety yet, but it's giving me something to work up to. I'm hoping Kathy decides to market a total body pilates video! You won't be disappointed with this tape!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars This workout is easyyyy...or so it seems...
It's my frist Kathy Smith's video and i'm not as pleased as I thought I would be...it's short and I didn't feel the ab muscles at all after the workout. I,however, loved the intro where kathy explains Pilates. It is worth giving a try but don't get too excited. It is reserved for beginners because I, as an intermediate/advanced exerciser, am only going to use this one when i'm cranched for time.

4-0 out of 5 stars good beginner workout
This is a really good abs workout. It is shorter than SMith's other pilates workout for the lower body. I found that the exercises were harder and I was unable to complete the workout the first time. However, I give this workout four stars because it has some of the same ecercises as the Lower Body workout and it is not as long. I simply felt that Kathy Smith's Pilates for the Lower Body was the better video of the two. This works best when used with that workout.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great technique pointers make this a great abs workout!
At the start of this video, Kathy Smith takes a full 7 minutes to discuss proper form and alignment. She covers important Pilates terms such as the powerhouse, and she also offers detailed form pointers including how to pull your navel toward your spine, how to tilt your pelvis, and how to contract your pelvic floor (similar to Kegel exercises). Although I was already familiar with Pilates, I found this section to be a very helpful refresher, and I appreciated Kathy's unique instruction.

Kathy then moves on to the workout. Although she doesn't do the moves in the classic Pilates sequence--she notes that she altered the sequence to focus even more specifically on the abs--she does start with the typical Pilates first exercise, the Hundred. She performs this and other moves at a modified level while her assistant, Lija, demonstrates more challenging positions. The exercises include lesser-known Pilates moves such as the Can-Can and the Mermaid as well as a yoga pose, Bridge. Kathy offers form reminders throughout the workout, and I found this to be particularly helpful in making sure that the work was concentrated in my abs. The entire workout is over in a quick 20 minutes, but by the end, my abs definitely felt the work.

Although this workout is appropriate for those at a beginning level, I wouldn't recommend it to someone totally brand new to Pilates, as it proceeds a bit too quickly. Instead, a Pilates novice could use either Ana Caban's Beginner's Mat Work or Hilary Burnett's Pilates for Beginners to obtain more detailed instruction on performing the movements. Once the basic technique is learned, however, this workout is appropriate for beginning or intermediate Pilates practitioners who want a short program which specifically targets the abdominal muscles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great for lower body
Kathy Smith's Functionally Fit videos are fun and effective! This one expands more of the toning exercises in Funct. Fit Peak Fat Burning. Everything Kathy promises about this video is true, it will help you tone and shape your lower body. I gave birth to 3 children in 3.5 years and it has helped me get back into shape - for my everyday life - and beautifully shaped my buns and thighs. The exercises are fun and interesting so you don't get bored and not too dancy or complicated. You will want to compliment this workout with some cardio and something for abs and then you'll have a great diverse workout! From my experience I would NOT use this (2-3 times weekly) with the Functionally Fit Peak Fat Burning workout (3 times weekly) because they work many of the same muscles. I would alternate them with some of Kathy's other cardio workouts like her Personal Trainer DVD or Timesaver Cardio Fat Burner. Hope that helps! :o)

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun and fast but not challenging enough
I feel like this is a video to maintain my legs and butt during the winter months when I am wearing pants. However, it definitely does not give me the definition that incorporating dumbbells does or that similar lower body Tamilee Webb videos do. It's a great video if you are a beginner or want a tape you can use on days when you don't have time to exercise your legs to exhaustion. I wouldn't use this tape to get into peak physical shape, but it's great as a starter. I guess that's the functionally fit aspect. You won't get the muscle-by-muscle definition that exercising each part individually to fatigue will give you. However, she explains everything very well and keeps you motivated. I don't feel like my quadriceps got a good workout...I didn't even feel it. But, it will keep your glutes in shape and burn some calories in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast workout and fast results!
I really love this workout. It has a quick warm-up (that really warms you up and should probably be called a mini-workout) and then two 12 minute workouts. I need things that are short on time, but this tape kicks my butt in that twelve minutes! It's challenging and fun, and I saw results very fast. I'd recommend it to anyone, and have been raving about it to friends and family. Buy it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too easy
I have a million work out dvd's and i love Kathy Smith's stuff but the exercises in this dvd are very simple and don't even come close to toning anything unless you haven't exercised in years. For someone who exercises often and has resonable tone in her legs this was too simple and unchalleging. If you just started working out this will be a good DVD for you but be aware that you will probably grow out of it after a couple of weeks. Not recommended for someonbe who works out more that twice a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still My Favorite!
I've owned this tape for several years, and while I have over a dozen exercise videos from various instructors, this is one of two that I keep coming back to on a regular basis.

Kathy Smith is the best. She keeps proper count of her repetitions (I hate when they lose count and leave you feeling lop-sided), she offers do-able alternatives for beginners, and she motivates without using that condescending tone some others employ.

The tape relies heavily on squats, which I dreaded at first (I was completely out of shape). However, after Kathy teaches you how to do a proper squat (weight on the heels--like you're sitting down), it does get easier.

I think it should be explained that the difference between the first segment and the second isn't the number of repetitions or speed. In the first segment you do each exercise first on one leg, then on the other. This gives each leg a rest during each exercise. In the second segment you go through all the exercises on one leg without a rest, then start over on the other leg. This is what makes it more difficult. Still, it's not so difficult that you should be afraid to give it a try if you're a beginner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Standing Pilates
I've been a Denise Austin fan for a while. I've been pretty impressed with many of the releases she's had in the last three years, since she took on choreographer Lisa Wheeler of Method fame. I've found the workouts to be innovative and challenging, and I love the Pilates focus.

The workout could be described as classic fusion, combining yoga, Standing Pilates and a little bit of dance. The centerpiece, of course, is Standing Pilates, an innovation of Physical Mind (a Pilates organization with which Ms. Wheeler is affiliated). To the best of their ability, trainers turn the classic Pilates matwork on its feet, challenging balance as well as some core strength.

The Standing Pilates used here eliminates some of the moves that challenge balance the most, like the Standing Hundred and Corkscrew. However, it does add some new ones, like the Standing Swan and Single Leg Pulls. The feel of this workout is dancy rather than athletic.

I would call this a high-beginner/low-intermediate workout. The team seems to have gone out of its way to eliminate or modify some of the more challenging moves, including the Pilates Pushup. In the Physical Mind syllabus, this is done on the floor (as in the Classic Mat sequence) but here Austin uses the wall. No modifications to make the work more difficult are shown.

The Soul part is where most of the dance comes in, plus a little bit of yoga. I felt this was the weakest section of the workout- nothing wrong with the moves, but something about Austin's voice overpowered the flow of the moves and the music, and it wasn't as much fun as it could have been.

I'd give this workout 3.5 stars if I could. The biggest problem I have with Austin's workouts isn't that they are too easy, but that they include intermediate or sometimes advanced moves without a lot of instruction. Her directions for breathing are minimal, and she spends almost no time discussing the need to stabilize the muscles of the torso (the focus is on balance here, but balance is easier when you consciously focus on the muscles of your powerhouse). I'd still recommend this as a jumping off point for Standing Pilates, but only for those already versed in the mat Pilates principles.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Workout Find
I first heard of Denise Austin's Power Zone workout from my January 2004 Fitness Magazine. In this issue there was an article listing the best workout videos according to the areas it focuses on . Power Zone was listed best for abs....an area I could definitely use. I researched further reading the reviews on Amazon's site and decided to give it a try. Both didn't steer me wrong. I LOVE IT!!!! This is my first Denise Austin workout video. At first I didn't know if I could handle her voice, but got use to it quickly. In fact I found her very motivating and like the way she cues you throughout the workout. Her best reminder..."zip up those abs" was very helpful for me. I enjoyed it so much I'm getting her book "Shrink Your Female Fat Zones" and checking in to some of her other DVDs.
Power Zone has three sections to focus on the mind, body, and soul.
First comes the mind in the form of Yoga. I have done some yoga and found the moves are fairly easy. It uses some basic moves and involves lots of stretching. The only thing there is no other person showing an alternate way to do the moves. I think though that if you found a move difficult you could conquer it rather quickly with some practice.
Next comes body. This section uses Pilates which I love. I have a few pilates mat DVDs. This one is standing pilates. It incorporates many of your mat moves only standing. Its a great addition because doing the same moves standing works the area in a slightly different way. Also during this time you do moves using the wall and chair or something to hold on to.
Last is soul. This is covered through a light aerobic salsa dancing routine.
Overall this DVD is a great find. I'm so glad I took the chance and tried it. I wish I could say that on all my workout video purchases. I really enjoy working out with this DVD and actually look forward to it. If your looking for a great yoga/pilates workout look no more and purchase Denise Austin's Power Zone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too short....
This workout is too short for the price you're paying. It is different in a good way, but she is still overly chatty.

Also, Hey Denise, everyone knows you have tons of videos/DVDs out, put your ads on the last part of the DVD intstead of in the first chapter--people want to get right to the workout, not sit through ads. That alone is truly annoying, and because of that, I'll be looking for it used.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slow and effective
After nearly 49 years of a sedentary life, I decided I was going to get in shape. This was a great video to start with since I had not been physically active. I could not do a lot of the Yoga moves or keep the pace of the dance moves at first, but I can do most everything now after several months. I have "advanced" to some of Denise's fat-blasting tapes, but I still do this one several times a week. Excellent for lower back strength and flexibility!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workout
I have quite a collection of Denise Austin videos. She is my favorite and with such a variety of workouts I never get bored. The Power Zone workout is one of my absolute favorites!! I saw it at our local store and grabbed it. Its wonderful! You get a great workout and you feel so relaxed afterwards. I cannot say enough about it. I've let all my friends borrow this DVD trying to get them to buy it because it really does make a difference. I do this workout in conjunction with her Blast Away 10lbs and her Power Kickboxing. I have noticed a difference and my flexibility is amazing. This is so worth the money! ... Read more

Breakthru Pilates Plus is an innovative and powerful 50-minute strength and flexibility workout combining Pilates, ballet, and yoga. Best for the intermediate exerciser, this workout uses body weight for muscle and core strengthening. No equipment is needed, so this workout can be done anywhere, even in a hotel room. The Pilates segment is challenging and not a repeat of the Pilates exercises you find in most videos. The ballet segment is a series of moves done standing, using a chair for balance, primarily working the calves, thighs and buttocks. The strong yoga segment works the whole body. Tracy York and Michelle Dozois are excellent instructors: clear, motivating, warm, and energetic. Even when you can't watch the screen, as in parts of the yoga segment, their verbal instruction is precise enough to take you from pose to pose without confusion. Highly recommended, especially for experienced exercisers seeking variety to spice up their routine. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as the Title Says- Plus!
I have mostly The Firm videos, however I started doing pilates with the Dummies series and really enjoyed it. This video has Michelle Dozois from the Dummies series along side Tracy York. These two have a great rapport and a challanging workout. While it doesn't get your heart racing it does work your core (pilates), your legs (ballet) and stretch and calm you (yoga). I find it a nice change of pace from my Firm videos. Take the time to try it, you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY PLEASED WITH PILATES
After 2 weeks of doing this video every other day, my abs were solid from the bottom of my rib cage all the way down to my groin! And I've had 2 C-sections!

This video is my first with Pilates on it. It is great for beginners because it is tripled with ballet & yoga. This makes it a well-rounded workout. The Pilates segment is just the right length. Anymore would be too much for a beginner. It is definitely challenging, and after doing it the first time, I thought Pilates was torture. Then I realized I like subjecting myself to this torture, and it really does work! I've done other tapes for my abs, and the Pilates segment on this video works the best BY FAR!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very dependable
I've been using this workout for about two months - normally on my cardio "off days". It is a very challenging workout, but it's almost as if you don't notice how hard you are working because the program flows so well. It has become my favorite workout and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for something a little different. It's a great early morning workout - it's challenging without being too overwhelming.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Loved It!
Some portions were intense like the yoga push ups. But other than that, I enjoyed the routines immensely. I have Core Conditioning by the pair and found that the routine which was primarily pilates based, put too much pressure on my neck.

The variety in this workout is more versatile. In my opinion, if you've never done ballet, they make the movements easy. I enjoy the tape and will log on to their website to check out the tape that incorporates weight training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Thing I've Found!
I have not worked out in almost ten years. In fact, I don't get much exercise at all, I have a desk job and walking to and from the car has been about it. Fortunately, I'm blessed with "thin" genes. But, I have a lot of body pain, joint stiffness...and very high cholesterol. My doctor said to start moving, didn't matter what it was, just MOVE! I don't like to walk or do aerobics, so on the way home from my labwork, I stopped at our library to try out a tape and there was Breakthu Pilates Plus. What a find! I love this tape! While in the beginning I could not get through the whole thing at once, I did like that I could do just part and not feel like I stopped in the middle of something. Also, the girls continually coach through the whole tape to find the place that feels right for you. I didn't feel pushed to keep up like some of the program's I've ~watched~ on tv. I now own the dvd and it's the best money I've ever spent on myself!

Each morning, I get up and at least do the ballet session, it really gets my energy level up. If I have time, I do the rest of the program. At night I do the yoga and it really helps me relax and sleep better.

This tape has been the best find for me. My body pains and aches are less and less each day, my cholesterol is coming down and I feel good. It is something I look forward to doing each day, I don't dread doing the exercises! Tracy and Michelle seem like they are two good friends in my living room, helping me through this workout. I highly recommend this program!

Thanks, Tracy and Michelle! ... Read more

Physician and tai chi expert Paul Lam has created a 77-minute tai chi workout with movements specifically chosen for those with both Type I and Type II diabetes. In the seven-minute introduction, Australian medical experts explain the disease and endorse tai chi, with its gentle combination of muscle-strengthening and relaxation exercises, as ideal for diabetic patients. Then Lam and his assistants begin a program of warm-ups, stretches, and qigong movements designed to improve energy along the meridians affected by diabetes. (Lam explains meridians as part of the Chinese concept of Qi--"life energy"--and how they affect the body.) They follow with both basic and advanced dance-like movements, which have such delightful monikers as "fair lady working at the shuttle" and "waving hands in the cloud." Lam includes a separate demonstration without instruction for those who master the movements and want a fluid routine to follow. --Kimberly Heinrichs ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but missleading
This DVD is a little missleading. When you buy it you think that you are getting several different workouts that last for different lengths of time. When I opened it, I chose to do the first workout. A 45 minute Yoga Sculpt routine. This is a great session for beginners like me. But, when I finished, I wanted to try out the 20 minute Pilates routine. Well, turns out, I already did it in the 45 minute Yoga Sculpt session. What they did was add the 25 minute Yoga Flow routine and the 20 minute pilates to get the 45 minute Yoga Sculpt session. I was a little disappointed with that. Plus, the pilates basically focuses only on abs.

The second half of the DVD, like other reviewers had mentioned, required more equiptment, and included a wierd flailing of the arms warm up.

Overall, the Yoga is very good. I was just dissapointed when there weren't more options.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Workout
Karen Voight is very cut. I doubt she got that way from these routines.

The yoga is the best part. There are some good stretches. The instructions are pretty good. Its a good off day yoga routine.

The sculpting was disappointing. First of all, you have to buy extra equipment (Green Genie Balls). You can get them at Wal Mart for half of what Karen Voight's website wants. The routine starts with some clunky cardio that's hard to follow. The instructions are poor. The sculpting routine is not very challenging.

This may be okay for a beginner, but someone with experience will be let down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good workouts thrown in here
I'm your typical middle aged male recalling the great athletic younger days but noticing more than a little extra developing :). So my wife and I bought Yoga Sculpt and the Pilates DVD by Karen Voight. I'll discuss the good and the bad-

Good- Core Essentials lunge and squat workout. Just step aerobicky enough to make it interesting but nothing you men out there will be too humiliated to do. She gets those legs burning.

Yoga workout. Especially if done after Core Essential lunge workout it is quite challeging but doable by a beginner. I like it.

Voight is ripped! Especially in the lunge workout which seems to have been filmed years ago. Even to a man it is inspirational.

Bad - After the lunge workout Voight takes you through some routines that involve special equipment you can purchase. Better stomach and legs workout in here pilates DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars As always - Karen delivers the best!
I have done several yoga tapes and I find this yoga workout very soothing and at the same time athletic. I like music, too. I am always very relaxed after doing this workout.

2-0 out of 5 stars motion sickness
There are 2 workouts on this dvd--a yoga workout, and a core essentials workout.

The continuous camera movement for the yoga portion makes me feel ill. So, the rare times that I view this dvd, I try to avoid looking at the screen. Unfortunately, I can still see the screen out of the corner of my eye. The music is of the ballet-piano variety, which I am not the biggest fan of. The instructor breezes a little too fast through the poses, and her voice sounds like Jenny Jones's--this I wish I had known before I bought the dvd.

The core essentials portion of the dvd is strange--the instructor starts off with this weird speed floor aerobics. Then I realize that in order to do the workout, one needed to have purchased this weighted little ball (a catalog and order form is 'conveniently' included inside the dvd) from her store. Voight doesn't even suggest modifications in the event you do not have this ball, which I found annoying.

There are much better yoga dvds out there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Energizing, relaxing & a great workout!
What an enjoyable and invigorating workout. I have been doing this yoga video for about a year now & I don't ever get tired of it. It's the best thing that I have done for myself since having 2 children. Keeping up with 2 young & energetic boys sometimes leaves me tired, achy, tense & unfocused. This video has been a life saver for me. As a current ballet teacher & as a former ballet dancer, it's really nice to do the stretching & relaxing that this workout has to offer. Not to mention it's a great workout. After incorporating this workout into my life, I have an amazing amount of energy & I have been able to slim my entire body down to the thinnest & strongest I've ever been. I really enjoy the relaxation that Rod Stryker leads you through at the end. It is a true revitalizer. He and Kathy Smith are so enjoyable to watch & listen to. As an instructor, Rod is a nice change of pace. I think this is a great intermediate workout & definately more challenging than the New Yoga Workout. I am ready to move to a more advanced workout, but I will always continue to do this one because it makes me feel so good.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Usual Kathy Smith does an excellent job
I have had this workout on VHS tape since it came out (about 5 years ago). It is wonderful! Kathy Smith has a way of explaining exercises in a clear manner but yet not making you feel like an idiot. The Yoga on this tape is a great total body workout. While you are doing it you don't even think you are working that hard and then before you know it you are sweating. By the next day your body feels like you've worked hard.

I loved it so much I just bought the workout on DVD. The DVD is great because the workout is seperated into different sections so that if you just want to quickly do floor exercises or deep breathing you can go right to that particular part.

I would highly recommed this tape to those people who like Yoga or simply want to try new things. I started out with the Kathy Smith beginner Yoga tape and moved up to this when I felt confident.

I hope Kathy Smith comes out with some more advanced Yoga tapes soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars ROD STRYKER AND KATHY SMITH, AN EXCELLENT YOGA COMBINATION
By way of giving some background, I've been practicing daily Yoga for 7 years, have over 70 yoga videos, and study with a fabulous teacher as well.

I must admit that I was skeptical about a Yoga video w/ fitness star Kathy Smith. I was concerned that this was strictly a "Let's get on the Yoga Bandwagon" project. However, knowing that Rod Stryker was her partner in this made me give it a try because Rod is the "Real Deal".

This video is actually led by Rod Stryker w/ Kathy Smith assisting him (which is a very smart move on Kathy Smith's part and gives it much more credibility "Yoga wise" in my opinion).

It's a very complete yoga routine, with Gentle Warmups, Sun Saluations (w/ pushups between up/down dog), a complete standing pose practice, Short balancing segment, a very complete backbending routine plus forward bends, inversions and relaxation. There is a clear explanation of Ujayi Breathing at the beginning as well.

I found this tape to be enjoyable to practice with, easy to follow and challenging as well.

I actually took it out of the library to try it out and was so impressed that I just ordered her Ultimate Yoga DVD set which has her three Yoga Programs, I've tried all three and had to have them.

By the way, I thought Rod actually came across better in this video than he does in his "Yoga For Longevity" video where he seems a bit stiff and mechanical (even though that is a WONDERFUL video which I highly recommend).

Also, if you want to try another really great and challenging video, check out Sherri Baptiste's "Baptiste Power Of Yoga" video (which is an intermediate level video)as well as her brother Baron Baptiste's excellent collection of videos (in particular his "live" set). Of course Bryan Kest has some of the best videos out there as well if you're looking for a real challenge with another excellent teacher.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good-Competitive stars
The asanas displayed in this video are pretty standard, nothing terribly complicated, but in Yoga there is always room for improvement, and one can always try to be more flexible in even the most basic of poses. Therefore the videotape won't necessarily go out of style.

Also, although I might not yet have achieved the same degree of flexibility as Smith and Stryker, I'd still say the video is a bit slow paced and boring. Not only that, but I found Smith and Styker to be a bit competitive with each other, trying to one up each other a bit. Styrker made some comments about Kathy being more flexible and liking to show it off, etc. I sensed a bit of competitiion, which I honestly feel has no place in the practice of Yoga, which is to eliminate competition and go at your own pace. Honestly, I think Kathy Smith is not at her best when taking a back seat to another person's instruction, and she needs to, or rather should be, the star of the show. I sensed a bad vibe between the two which sort of ruined it for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great video
I do enjoy this video and find it challenging. However, Kathy does not instruct it! Unlike quite a few other instructors she is able to follow along and keep up better tha Denise Austin! But I did find it dissapointing to see an instructor that usually is in living arts videos.
Overall a good challenging yoga workout! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
My mother has used this workout regularly for the past 5-6 years (she's now 78 years old). She likes it because it gives her an overall good workout without discouraging her by being overly strenuous. I often listen from the next room while I'm working, so I can say (and she heartily agrees) that Leslie's words are encouraging, not annoying to hear with repeated use of the workout, as is the background music. I even know an 82-year-old neighbor who'd stopped going to a class for seniors and now works with Leslie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic workout
I am a fan of Tamilee - and she delivers a good allround basic workout. This DVD would score higher with me if I were a beginner: it delivers a solid, 30 minute aerobic (cardio + strength) workout followed by a 10 minute ab/stetch section. Ideal for the beginner, for whom it'll be a real challenge. Less ideal for the intermediate or advanced exerciser, which I am (the rest of this is for more experienced exercisers). However, after a 4 month hiatus I am getting back in the swing of things and this is a good programme to do it with. If you really apply yourself, you'll definitely break a sweat. Think heart rate somewhat lower - in the fat burning zone. Good for days when you want a fast workout or alternatively when you want something not very intense (or for those lazy days but you want to kick the guilt by still doing something).

Overall, a good solid basic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be a better video for the beginner
The use of this tape will lead you to thoroughly enjoy yoga, as I do. Having both of Kathy Smith's introductory and intermediate versions, New Yoga Basics and New Yoga, the former is the choice for the beginner. Even with New Yoga Basics, there are a couple of difficult poses; however, with several months practice, you should be able to do with ease. Three aspects make this tape stand out from the others. First, you are given sufficient time in the pose to feel the stretch. Second, during the time holding the stance, Kathy gives suggestions on correct form. I felt she thoroughly covered how ones body should be aligned while in each posture. Third, she reminded throughout the video to take long, slow and deep breaths. Also when you should inhale during the movement and exhale. This video is most effective in teaching the beginning student, because Kathy gives you adequate time and tips about proper form. She also emphasizes the importances of breathing to induce relaxation and supply the muscles and brain with the necessary element for energy - oxygen.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can actually do this!
This is an amazing tape (if you can get past the first 5 minutes of commercials for her other workout videos!!). I found after 3 sessions, I was able to do some poses on the tape that I couldn't do the first time! I feel so relaxed during and after the workout. Soothing music, not-too-crazy poses, breathing etc. I really like how Kathy does the voiceover....i think she taped her voice while watching the video after she made it. It is really helpful because she is so descriptive that when you are in mid-pose you don't have to look at the video to know what to do next. She constantly reminds you not to overstretch and to breathe correctly. I've been doing it for 2 weeks now and probably in another month I will try the intermediate video. It's not just a workout, it's a way of life. The whole thing takes about 55 minutes, but you can't imagine how good you will feel when it's done....relaxed and centered. FYI, I got the same intense muscle workout doing this yoga tape that I did with the Body-for-Life program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
This was my first exposure to yoga. A couple of the poses are challenging but I stuck with it and saw improvement very quickly. My balance is amazing and I feel great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Yoga Practice and Great Place to Start
I took this DVD out of my Library our of curiousity along with two of Kathy Smiths other Yoga videos.

While I've been practicing daily for 7 years and have been fortunate to be blessed with a wonderful and gifted teacher (whose classes I wish I could attend daily), I rely heavily on my home practice due to my schedule.

I find that VHS/DVD's are a really great way to keep a home practice from getting stale and I like to alternate between lots of programs for variety as well as different levels of intensity. Even though I have been doing Yoga for a relatively long time I still enjoy working with "beginners" programs on days when I don't want to push really hard but still want a well rounded practice.

I found this program to be a real joy to practice with and have been pleasently surprised by the two Yoga Programs of Kathy Smith's that I've gotten to practice with so far. In fact I'll be trying out her intermediate DVD tomorrow and from what I've seen so far I have great expectations. In fact I plan on ordering the 3 DVD set.

I think it's admirable that while Kathy Smith is the featured teacher in this program, she was wise enough to have collaborated with Rod Stryker (who not only developed the routine but also was a co-producer on the video if I'm not mistaken). Rod is the real deal, he's as reputable a teacher of yoga as one might find anywhere so this program is extremely sound and well structured.

I feel that Kathy does a great job of leading you through the program, she paces the program well, has clear and concise instruction and is an inspiring model.

I can see how some might feel there are some poses (particularly those in lunge positions as well as Downward facing dog) that might be a bit too much for a brand new beginner, but if these weren't included the tape would become pretty useless very quickly. The key is just to do what you can and rest when you need to, you will eventually build up strength incrementally.

Another positive thing about this program is that it is not filled with "too much" verbal instruction and therefore maintains a flow which makes it very "practice friendly". There are other very good introductory programs out there but often those become hard to practice with because they can get too bogged down with details and therefore are cumbersome to practice with.

Anyway, I highly recommend this program for beginners or even those more advanced who (like me on this particular morning) want to have a gentle yoga program to practice with to alternate with more intense programs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner Yoga Video
If you're new to yoga, I'd definitely recommend this video. Kathy is very detailed in explaining each pose and how to breathe properly. She eases you into yoga and gives you a very thorough workout. Once you've been doing this video for a while and have the poses down, you may want to advance a faster paced yoga video as this one will not be as challenging. Overall, this is a great video and a wonderful doorway to the world of yoga! ... Read more
