4-0 out of 5 stars Another typical french romantic comedy!
The movie is a typical french romantic comedy and this is rather a complement. As usual in such films you can expect deep pchylogical observations, in this case of quite unstable single woman in her thirties (played fabulously by Karin Viard). There is plenty of humor and even sarcasm in the movie. I was rather a little disappointed by the ending (contrary to what some other viewers said here) since I felt that it somehow didn't follow the spirit of the movie - therefore only four stars. But overall, if you like romantic comedies and/or like french movies you will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Eve, So French, So Fun
This is a great romantic comedy with all the twists and turns of a typical French film. Camille (Karin Viard) is a bored young woman who hangs out at [exotic] clubs and often ends the night passed out from too much liquor and drugs. She has a disfunctional brother with a pregnant wife. One day she meets a socialist worker, Alexis, with whom she rapidly falls deeply in love. After she finds out he is married, she becomes involved with a truck driver and a lesbian. The sex scenes are fun, but not explict. The ending is poignant and sweet.

2-0 out of 5 stars ...
... this movie was extremly dry w/ little if any redeming factors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Karin Viard is a great actress
i have to say that i saw this film with spanish translation and thank God because the whole thing is in French. And i dont understand French because i dont speak it at all. i only speak spanish and english ,but i thought this motion picture was great and really worth my time viewing. Karin Viard, is truly, a fantastic actress who works at her character quite well. She is truly a gifted actress. i think she is very cute too. She plays a woman who falls in love with a married man and finds out that the married man will not leave her wife(teacher) for her. the situation infuriates Camille (Karin Viard)and so she works very hard at persuading him with words and positive actions at the work place that the only person she truly loves is him, that he is the love of her life. the ending is really something, which i feel everyone should see.ending is really sweet and beautiful and one actually wants a happy ending for camille in which it does happen. this motion picture titled "New Eve" which stars Karin Viard should be broadcasted on the major networks of this country (USA). movies such as these have so much feeling and soul.Great motion picture.... Ms. Karin Viard..sensational! buy it, very touching! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars VIAGGIO con Anita
Don't waste your time or money on this one. With Goldie Hawn and Giancarlo Giannini together (two of my all time favorites and both very funny people and fine actors, I thought this would be one hysterical movie, but I was wrong. It is not a comedy at all, and you will be very dissapointed if that is what you are expecting. Also, the quality of the video is not good. It's very dark.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goldie's Best!
This is a weird little, low-budget, foreign film that oddly enough is the best movie I've ever seen Goldie Hawn in. My wife is a big fan of Goldie, so--by osmosis--I've ended up seeing her in all her movies, and I swear, this one is funniest, in a low key sort of way. It's about this world-weary, chain smoker, bag-eyed, married guy, who drives to his dad's house (the dad is dying) and takes Goldie along--he finds her at his mistress's house. The movie has got this nice lightness/feshness/breeziness to it--that most movies no longer have, and you get odd pretty glimpses of Italy as it was 30 years ago. The DVD unfortunately isn't wide screen, the print is less than spectacular, the soundtrack sounds like it has been badly dubbed, there is no scatalogical humor, there are no wonderful special features, but oddly enough you will feel utterly wonderfully, satisfied, and amused, when you finish with this charming little DVD. ... Actor and martial arts maestro Jet Li and iconoclastic director TsuiHark revisit historical China and legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hung in the second installment to the wildly popular Once Upon a Time in China film series (or better yet, "serials"). The main players include Li as Wong Fei Hung, Rosamund Kwan as his beloved but Westernized Auntie 13, and their clumsy sidekick Foon (Max Mok). China is in a period of political unrest. Dr. Sun Yat Sen is beginning to gain momentum behind his Nationalist party. A Qing minister (played with intensity by skilled fighter Donnie Yen) firmly carries out his job as police enforcer and a crazed cult called the White Lotus Sect has decided to take matters into their own hands by bullying citizens and destroying everything foreign. Wong and his crew find themselves at odds with the minister and the Sect, who have more in common than they initially let on. It all leads to some high-octane action scenes, including an all-out table-stacking and airborne brawl with theSect (in which Wong uncharacteristically goes a little berserk himself) and a one-on-one matchup between Li and Yen. Tsui juggles the multilayered plot while Li juggles his opponents in a perfectly serviceable epic that is perhaps not as significant as the first Once Upon a Time in China but is solid kung fu nourishment for fans. --Shannon Gee ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special Weak on the Action !
I know that this movie seems great to all the people who are reading these reviews, but trust me, this dvd is not worth it. The action scenes weren't that great. The plot was a little weak. The guy who played Foon didn't fight well. Don't get me wrong, I loooovvvveeeeeeee Yuen Woo-Ping movies. I lovvvvvvveeeeeeeeee Donnie Yen and Jet Li. I expected this to be a non-stop action ride. But in fact, it was greatly lacking all of the above. Yuen Woo-Ping has done some of the greatest fight sequences I have ever seen. But something happened here because nothing was original or unique. It was plain and boring. Don't get me wrong, I've seen Tai-chi master, Wing Chun, Deadly China Hero, Legend of the Drunken Master, Iron Monkey, Fist of Legend, etc, and thought they were the best movies i have ever seen for Kung-Fu. I thought Ouatic 1 was also original and moving. The way Tsui Hark directed the last fighting scene and all the rest was amazing. In this movie you had to wait for 3/4 of the movie to finally see some serious action. Crouching Tiger's action was much better and even more unique. In fact, in Hong Kong and Mainland China they criticized Crouching Tiger as being boring and having no action, while Ouatic 2 was a classic there and had absolutely no action or plot. I know the other reviews sound appealing and I stick out like a sour apple, but please try to understand. I love Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, etc, but this movie was a big disappointment. I watched this in great pain. How could this movie be so ordinary and medicro. I, like you, read the reviews and said to myself, hey this movie is going to be great. I even saw a trailor of Donnie Yen and Jet Li fighting with bows in a enclosed area and said out loud, this is going to be a great movie. I will say this, the action between Donnie Yen and Jet Li was amazing but that amazing part only lasted 10 minutes. Jet Li never fights hand to hand with Donnie Yen. Donnie Yen doesn't fight at all with his hands. Please put this DVD away. Trust me, writing this review hurts me more than it hurts the people who are reading this. I'm a great admirer of Yuen, Donnie and Jet and even Tsui Hark. But this movie didn't do it for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars In my opionion, the best of the series that I have seen
Wong Fei Hung is an important figure, not only to Chinese history, but also to me as a student of the style, which he helped make famous. The Hung Gar Style is traced back to Hung Tsi Kwan (there are lots of debates over the spelling of his name) who taught Luk Ah Choy, and Wong Tai (Wong Fei Hung's grand father) who taught Wong Kei Ying (Fei Hung's father) who refused to teach Fei Hung, forcing him to turn to Luk Ah Choy for lessons. Fei Hung then went on to teach Lam Sai Wing who wrote the book that more or less made the style famous. Hung Gar is a very common style in Southern China, but is very rare stateside with only a small number of schools teaching it. Wong Fei Hung is therefore a matter of great interest to me, which is why I bought this film without actually seeing it first. Lucky for me it ended up being a very worthwhile purchase.
Although the film continues the bizarre and fictional relationship between Wong Fei Hung and his Cousin Yee this film is the most enjoyable of the three that I have seen. There is a lot of comedy in this film that works brilliantly along side the action and the drama for this film, which fully recognizes itself as being a work of fiction despite its use of historical figures.
Wong Fei Hung and his student Foon (Now played by a different actor) set off on an adventure with Cousin Yee that bring them up against the Sinister White Lotus Society who are determined to rid China of the foreigners using a mystical power that makes them invincible. But is this power real? The film's story is more intriguing than the previous film, and the action scenes are twice as good. I highly recommend this title as it, like its predecessor is one of the finest Kung Fu films out there. Even the English dub on this film is halfway decent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the first! (by a lot!)
I've saw the first and second one and I must say that the second one was soooo much better than the first one. If you liked the first one or any other martial arts movie with Jet Li in it, then don't pass out on this one!
The second movie (in my opinion)is not nearly as violent as the first one; they don't cuss as much; and the storyline was just great! There are less fighting scenes (not too much, so don't worry) but when they do appear, they are better than all the fighting scenes in the first one combined!
What else can I say? Get this film or at least rent it!

1-0 out of 5 stars A bad sequel to Once Upon a Time in China
This film does not come close to the quality of Once Upon a Time in China. First of all, the plot is weak, it does not have the kind of power that the original of this series did. The characters in this film seem like they are out of a comic book, while the characters in the first film were interesting and complex. The kungfu is mostly unrealistic wirework, and while Once Upon a Time in China had some of this, the emphasis was on realistic martial arts. In the original, the main characters were trying to resist the influence of the West which was destroying their culture, but in this version, the main characters are actually on the side of the Westerners and they are fighting their own people! There is no explanation of why Wong Fei Hung and his crew would side with the people who were their enemies in the last film. One of the reasons the original film was so good, was because it was about brave Chinese patriots trying to protect their culture, but in this film is seems as though they have switched sides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Arguably the best of the series....
I picked this one up as I heard that it's the best movie in the series, as well as one of Jet Li's best movies in general; that statement is really only half right. It is most likely the best in the series, essentially due to the intricate fight scenes choreographed by none other than "The Man" Yuen Woo Ping. Unfortunately, all of the movies in this series suffer in the same manner as the build-up to the fights is rather boring and extensive; i.e. the stories are nothing to write home about. In actuality, my favorite movie with Jet Li depicting Wong Fei Hung would be "Last Hero in China", which is officially not even a part of the OUATIC series. Watch this flick for Donnie Yen; if you want to see more entertaining work by Jet Li check out "Fist of Legend" or "Kung fu Cult Master". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Standing The Test Of Time
BEAT THE DEVIL is a very funny movie which retains its subtle charm even after many viewings, It reminds me of the MALTESE FALCON not only because of the similarity of some of the characters but also because of the likeness of the screenplays. Both films essentially focus on a treasure hunt with an array of buffoons vying for the prize. Humphrey Bogart's characters seem to be about the only really normal people in either movie. While it is definitely considered to be a comedy, BEAT THE DEVIL is also not a bad adventure story. Most of the subdued action takes place on shore while the assorted crooks and cutthroats are waiting for a leaky old ship to take them to Africa.

The cast includes Humphrey Bogart, Robert Morley, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Peter Lorre, Ivor Barnard and Edward Underwood.

John Huston was the director and Truman Capote contributed heavily to the screenwriting after the filming began in Italy.Truly a ton of Hollywood talent was assembled for this one movie in a relatively charming location.

It is no wonder that the movie is standing the test of time and is now enjoying a revival of sorts with even a minor cult following.

4-0 out of 5 stars Either You Get It or You Don't
Optioned as a drama by Humphrey Bogart's own production company, this movie was hijacked by director John Huston and screenwriter Truman Capote, who turned it into a subversive comedy under Bogart's nose. Some swindlers assembling in Italy would like to clean up a uranium concession in Africa but can't seem to keep the plot on the tracks. Almost entirely dialogue-driven, this satire relies in no little part on the mangled English dubbed for several of the characters by Peter Ustinov. Critic Pauline Kael quoted Humphrey Bogart about it: "Only phonies think it's funny." But even phonies like to laugh.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE ???
Great story with a great cast, but horrible sound and picture quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars A jar of pickled clichés
Certainly not a masterpiece with a terminating Humphrey Bogart and a debutante Lollobrigida. Two odd couples with crossing affairs lost in a small harbor no one knows where because their derelict ship has broken down, surrounded by a band of three or four would-be gangsters who are nothing but weak bad boys. They even end up with a taxi jumping into the ocean, an attempted murder by overboard throwing in the middle of some ocean night, a shipwreck that brings all that nice group of adventurers to some Morocco where they are forced to bribe the locals to get through, and that is not as easy as one may think. In other words quite a compilation of clichés. And yet it is some fun to see such naive queer composition that someone in Hollywood called a film.

3-0 out of 5 stars FILM NOIR SPOOF
This glorious spoof of the film noir genre of the 1940's, has direction by John Huston, an ever evolving script by Truman Capote and stars:Humphrey Bogart - HB (Billy Danreuther), Jennifer Jones - JJ (Gwendolynne Chelm), Gina Lollobrigida - GL (Maria), Edward Underdown - EU (Harry Chelm), Robert Morley - RM (Pierson), Peter Lorre - PL (O'Hara) and other notable character actors.

Basically a group of rogues are vieing with each other to be the first to obtain a rich uranium deposit somewhere in "British East Africa" but we are never told where precisely. It was filmed on location in Italy and features the only other comic role of JJ, (her first being "Cluny Brown (1946)) as a congenital liar, whose Spanish Nurse taught her all there is to know!.What a pity Selznick did not recognise the comic potential of his wife and instead of putting her in soulful dirges like "Indiscretion of an American Wife"(1952), he had developed her natural comic potential."Beat The Devil" did not perform at the box office in 1953/4 when released but is now, thankfully, being re-evaluated by discerning film connoiseurs, achieving almost a cult like status.

Being a strong amateur chess player, I particularly liked the scene outside the Italian cafe where JJ is "duffing up" EU again with an almost instant sight of the board, while chatting up HB.(Note to chess geeks - JJ plays much more weakly in "A Farewell to Arms (1957) vs Rock Hudson!!).Incidentally HB liked to play chess himself when off camera.

The plot twists & turns and being English with a bawdy sense of humour, I laughed when GL says to EU "I've brought you some tea & crumpet" while almost smothering EU in the eye with her... well you get the point! It is reported John Huston rather sadistically requested JJ to climb to the rocking crow's nest- a fearsome climb - to do her leg stretching exercises on the ship taking them to Africa. The gang, led by RM, hope she breaks a leg - & not in the theatrical sense! My favourite scene is in the office of the African potentate who is questioning the motley group of rogues. In reality all he wants to know is whether HB has met Rita Hayworth as he is a big fan!.If you look carefully you can see her pin-up on his office wall. The quivering of RM's various chins when he is threatened with torture, is a delight to behold.

The trick of Nazis having escaped to Latin America after WWII, is lampooned by PL who insists everyone calls him "O'Hara" (our little Irish leprecaun!).Everyone seems to be having a ball.Look out for Bernard Lee playing his usual police inspector role. This was long before he shot to fame as "M" in the Sean Connery, James Bond series from 1962 onwards.I've noticed in memorable films there is usually a catchy tune somewhere and here is no exception as played by an Italian brass band.I even find myself whistling the pianola music played on the ship while Ivor Barnard is away with his stabbing swagger stick ready to bump off EU.I voted 3/5 stars for this film. ...
