5-0 out of 5 stars great educational tool
I know some people have mistaken this for the feature film but it's actually a great educational tool for the classroom. It is great to help show young people how to deal with their anger and some of the negative consiquences of letting their anger control them.

1-0 out of 5 stars What is going on here?
The amazon people should be ashamed of themselves. They are obviously trying to trick people into buying this video under the impression that they are getting the jack nicholson movie. Key evidence: look at the list of "other dvd's these customers bought" - they're all feature films. This product is an instructional video. And I would love if someone could explain to me why it's $90 for an instructional video that is only 21 minutes long. How on earth can something that short in length be so much money? I also like how they advertise "buy together with Adam Sandler's Anger management for only $110". What? What?! That's not a deal. I damn near wet my pants when I saw this total debacle. Buyer beware - either that, or just ask yourself "Why is something that stars Adam Sandler $90?"

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the Adam Sandler-Jack Nicholson movie!
Don't look here if you want the Adam Sandler-Jack Nicholson theatrical feature. This "Anger Management" is a 21-minute instructional DVD.Perhaps Sandler could have used this before he had to see Jack... ... Read more

Description

This 40-minute video uses spectacular and unusual footage of erupting volcanoes from Hawaii and around the world to explain the features found in many of our volcanic national parks and monuments, and to show how they form. It presents up-to-date scientific ideas about lava flows: how they move, how they change, and how they create lava tubes. Designed for an audience that desires to understand more about volcanoes than is generally presented in made-for-TV documentaries. Beautifully photographed and entertaining, yet packed with information and concepts; you will never look at a lava flow the same way again.Winner of an Aegis award for video excellence and a finalist at the 2004 New York Festivals.

The DVD version also contains another program entitled "Kilauea: Close Up of an Active Volcano" (with English, Japanese, German and Korean language tracks, 2000 edition, 30 min.). This international award-winning video describes the origins and types of volcanic activity in Hawaii, and goes into detail on the eruptive activity of Kilauea volcano.

Both programs have chapter menus to make it easier for viewers to find sections of interest and for teachers to use in classes. Together they make a great educational package. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lava Flows and Lava Tubes
Lava Flows and Lava Tubes (DVD) provides the viewer with the opportunity to watch actual Hawaiian volcanic eruptions. The resulting features and terminology are all explained in a simple yet informative manner. A very nice comparison is made between the recent Hawaiian flows and prehistoric flows from the western continental United States. The producers obviously have a great love for their work and it shines through in the many beautiful images of eruptions and lava flows. Included on the DVD is another feature on the past eruptions of Kilauea with images that are breath-taking. This production presents an excellent overview of Hawaiian-style eruptions (excellent teaching resource!) and the fruits of many years of studying and filming the eruptions on the Big Island of Hawaii. I highly recommend this DVD. ... Read more

Kids gobble cookies, blow bubbles, open and close a box of dress-up items, even sit on the potty to illustrate some of the 31 hand gestures taught throughout this excellent sign language video. Much like a mini video "dictionary," teaching focuses on word recognition alone--not the alphabet nor on full sentence structure--and covers a smart variety of simple verbs and nouns (based on American Sign Language and Signing Exact English). The format is simplistic but highly effective, and keeps the action moving. After the word appears on-screen, an adult carefully signs and pronounces it twice. Then, scenes flip open like book pages or spin like revolving doors to reveal several real-life examples; for instance, "grandfather" fishes with his grandson, eats cereal, and reads a book. More hand gesture repetition, performed by a culturally diverse group of grownups and kids, offers lots of practice time. Probably best used in the home or in a hearing classroom, this visually and audibly appealing 40-minute show comes from the folks who created Parent's Choice award-winning Baby's First Impressions series. --Liane Thomas ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Check it out from the library before you would buy it.
I got this video from the library.I am glad I did so I didn't spend money on buying one. They teach 30-some signs in this video. The signs are:

mother, father (daddy), baby, boy, girl, grandmother, grandfather, love, please, thank you, eat, drink, more, cookie, potty, help, socks, shoes, hat, open, close, stop, go, sit, stand, off, on, play, ball, car, bubbles, books, video.

Here's an example of how it's done. For the word "mother" a woman signs it 3 times, a boy signs it twice, a girl says, "mama" and signs it twice. The little dark-skinned girl that does the signs and talks is just so adorable. The other people, for the most part, are looking at an angle away from the camera and it's a bit annoying.

At the end of the video they have a review. They say, "Do you know what this sign is?" and they show a person doing the sign. The audio is off but you can see them move their mouth while they say the word.It doesn't take a genius to read their lips and know exactly what word they are saying.I don't know how effective of a sign review that is.

I thought a few of the people doing the signs did them a little wrong.I am no expert (we started signing with my daughter 9 months ago) but for "bubble", as an example, they have someone signing it and it looks like bubbles are bursting; which is correct. But, then another lady will sign it and it looks like she is grabbing bubbles instead of popping them.Your fingers should be together and your fingers burst out, like a bubble popping. But that one signer has her fingers out and then brings them together as if she is grabbing the bubbles and not popping them. Also, the sign "boy" wasn't done the best. Some of the signers look like they are just closing and opening their fingers by their forehead. They really should have moved their hand forward a bit while doing that. It's just a little thing but it should be done correctly, in my opinion.

If you really want some excellent signing videos definitely go with "Signing Time" and "My Baby Can Talk".My baby is 18 months old and has been watching these since she was 9 months. She now knows over 50 signs. She loves those dvd's so much and watches them everyday. If we owned Talking Hands I really doubt she'd want to watch it.I have other reviews for you to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably best for older children
I started my son on this video at about 8 months and he picked up signs almost instantly. But many of the words taught I think pertain a little more to older children. He is now 18 months and is finally getting a handle on some of the other words.I've since found another dvd that I think catches is attention more and has words that are more from his world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Didn't keep my child's attention
Compared to another Signing dvd this one did not keep my child's attention.I kinda made me feel weird when the signer adults never even looked forward into the camera.I would not suggest getting this dvd at all....I would suggest another company...Signing Time.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stinky Robot Signs!
This video is definitely NOT my favorite. As the mother of a hearing, nonverbal child for whom Signing has been alife saver, let me tell you that this video is dry, robotic and not terrifically helpful. My child wasn't interested at all.We have other videos like Signing Time that are much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twins speak

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect ransition tool
Richard Harrington has gift for presenting a complex subject in a straight forward, easy to understand way. Knowing how to use Photoshop is not a guarantee of success in video editing. They are two separate disciplines, and this video goes a long way in bridging the gap. It is recommended for anyone new to video and who is trying to integrate elements from Photoshop into their work. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Digital Designers
I have been using Photoshop for about 5 years now and thought I had a pretty solid understanding of how to use it effectively for my job as a digital media designer. After purchasing Mr. Harrington's DVD set I found a ton of useful information to help my work flow, as well as, I'm embarrased to say, alot of information I simply did not know or consider when it came to digital media production with Photoshop CS. This is an excellent resource for beginners as well as experienced digi media designers. Definately a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Wish I'd had this a year ago
I just viewed an advance copy of Harrington's DVD set, and it's impressive. Harrington is an easy going, smooth instructor. Most importantly, he doesn't leave Windows users in the dark like most Photoshop training tools do.
Harrington isn't just a Photoshop guy, he knows video very well, and shows how Photoshop is a great asset to any video editors toolbox.
It's a long view, since it's 5+ hours. Don't try watching it all at one sitting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to get started
My wife and I purchased this DVD and love it.It is a great DVD if you are just getting started with Salsa.Ken does a great job with his instructions and there are lots of little breaks that allow you to practice. I think this is a great purchase for a beginning student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great instructor, essential moves, a bit advanced
Both the instructor and his partner are professional. The DVD is well done with good navigation and bilingual (Spanish and English). The Spanish version is also interesting since it has been dubbed. He also added an uncut, behind the scene footage which I found very funny.

i found this vol 1 a little too advanced for beginners. Also personally, I would have loved to see dancing performance of the instructor and his partner. His partner seems to be a very good dancer as well.

Overall, I highly recommend this DVD if you know very basic moves of salsa and want to improve them or just learn new ones. Looking forward to purchase vol 2...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent way to learn Salsa!
We've purchased a couple "How To Salsa" DVDs, but have used Hot Salsa Lessons, Volume 1 almost exclusively. We agree with the reviews we've already read. We'd like to volunteer that "Volume 1" doesn't yet gave a "Volume 2".That's too bad, because we'd buy it in a heartbeat if it were only available. Please make a "Volume 2" available soon!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars hey!i can salsa!
i'm not much of a dancer and the thought of taking dance classes was just too intimidating. a friend suggested getting a dvd. ken baldwin's hot salsa lessons-vol.1 was one of the dvds i happened to purchase. i had heard that salsa was difficult to learn, but i was more than pleasantly surprised. i did it!
the step by step instructions made it very easy to pick up. every move was broken down to simple elements, and then woven back together. there are plenty of opportunities to practice and follow along. the slow motion sequences were very helpful. mr. baldwin's instructions are very precise in words and movement. me being me, i needed to replay portions time and again. the dvd is laid out in such a way that such a task was made simple. i especially appreciate how he starts you out with the most simple of basics, such as how to keep count to the rhythm. the complexity gradually builds, but i never found myself overwhelmed and frustrated. thank goodness for replay. aside from the actual dance lessons, there were times when i found myself just watching ken baldwin and his lovely partner dance. i was mesmerized by the beauty and fluidity of their movement. while watching i realized how much nuance and style is involved. overall, the production values are very high. the music is fun and easy to listen to. i am looking forward to the night my wife and i go out to the salsa club. i highly recommend this dvd. try it, you'll see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and practical DVD!!!
This DVD really breaks down the dance!! It teaches you the different techniques and is extremly easy to follow. You truly get the feeling of a one-on-one instruction when you're watching Ken. Finally, a Salsa DVD that is practical and is highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Documentary
A very good-emotional documentary of the Vietnam War, it's hard to imageine that someone could have so much heart of fighting a war( North Vietnamese). The Film show how the people fought against the American, most of all- how the media was running under the war. A photographer wash his films at night without dark room. A dangerous way of walk the film back to the North. And some images were too horified to look, like the one show what was left of a town after was bomb by US B-52. If someone think that ths documentary or a reinactment they not human- probably some dead animal that has no brain at all. Buy this- it's very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning Tool for Children!
After my six-year old and I enjoyed The Fundamentals of Soccer with Stinky Shoe & Coach LaRoo DVD, I purchased several Stinky Shoe DVDs to give as gifts to friends and family with small children involved in sports. I received positive feedback from the parents who commented that their “beginner” athletes loved the characters and looked forward to testing their newly learned abilities on the field. Older, more experienced athletes can also benefit from the review as well as be entertained by the charming characters. This is an excellent product and I would recommend it to any parent who has children involved in sports. I hope to see Stinky Shoe and Coach LaRoo providing instruction for additional sports in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fundamentals of Soccer with Stinky Shoe & Coach LaRoo
Purchased this video for my grandchild who is just beginning to play the game. Covers the fundamentals clearly, reinforcing good sportsmanship and team work. Cartoon characters and associated music make the video fun to watch. May be helpful as a teaching tool for coaches.

The Standard Deviants troupe makes the daunting study of world geography fun and manageable in this 90-minute presentation. Three distinct programs explore the physical and human geography of North America, Europe and Russia, and Africa. The format is modern and fast paced, featuring young actors and comics, clear computer graphics, concise explanations, and a healthy dose of cornball humor. Hip young hosts present a basic overview of each geographical area followed by a deeper look at factors like climate, topography, historically significant events, and a glimpse at modern life. Fast facts are labeled "Geo-Neat-O's," seemingly old-time curmudgeons relate modern facts, and computer-generated classical philosophers add their own succinct wisdom. Each episode concludes with a nicely outlined, concise review of topics covered. Much like the Schoolhouse Rock! series popular in the 1970s, the Standard Deviants embrace popular culture as a significant educational tool. 5-0 out of 5 stars Generous DVD
I like a lot this DVD. Sonia after a short warm up leads you step by step in a very nice, long choreography with a lot of interesting moves, combinations and accents. At the same time you are also taught about the different rithmes you can find in a drum solo, Hassan will explain them and play them for you. This makes a nice and instructive pause between the fast moves and shimmies. In the performance Sonia dances the same choreography enriched with more moves in the beginning and accompanying it with more complex and beautiful arms. You can easily follow it and reproduce it. There is also a very funny and interesting section on Sonia and Hassan visiting Cairo. There is a lot ofhumour and you learn a lot on buying the right drum or taking dance lessons. I liked a lot seeing Sonia taking lessons fromfamous egiptian teachers, you can even there catch some interesting moves and I cannot wait seeing Sonia dancing the new choreos she learnt there! It's the first time that an interesting bonus like this is offererd in a bellydance instructional DVD. This is the reason for the title of my review and if it were not enough you also get a CD with drum solos played by Hassan. Do I need to say more? Maybe one thing, the DVD is best suited for intermediate-advanced or very talented beginners. Have fun with this DVD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic instruction for beginners
I really liked how this tape broke down some of the rhythms in middle eastern music. As a belly dance student, I had always been afraid of the drum solo, but this tape makes it seem really easy and fun.I also agree with the reviewer who stated that the movements are not specifically suited to the rhythms. However, Sonia does do a good job of breaking down the movements for the solo performance. To me, her voice is confident, yet gentle and she does not have that intimidating, irritating "diva" presence. I think beginning students will appreciate her persona.

The bonus CD is good for practicing the movements. It does not include the music to the choreography presented on the tape, but it presents good music.Overall, I enjoyed this tape and would highly recommend it for beginning students.I hope the producers will make a tape for intermediate and advanced dancers soon, and I'd like to see more of the teachers who were working with Sonia on the footage in Cairo. They were excellent and sexy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner dance combinations- fine, drum solo - so-so
I agree with other reviewers regarding the instructor's boring, lifeless image and basic moves. Here are my 2c:
Positives:
1. the combinations and choreography will be useful to beginners as a general belly dance training resource (NOT specifically as a drum solo tutorial)
2. Introduction to Middle Eastern Rhythms is a great idea.
3. Instruction is clear, comes across well on video.
Negatives:
1. Most of Sonia's combinations are not tied to the rhythm signatures of the drum rhythms. What is the purpose of offering particular combinations for particular rhtythms if the combinations don't reflect the individual features of the rhythms? They could have been created for Macareena. With a few exceptions, the combinations are just general BD combinations, not drum solo combinations.
2. From the menu you can get to "Merchandise" and "Also available", but there are no links to Warmup, Technique, Choreography, or individual rhythms inside the Technique. Looks like the marketing & sales depratments took over the dvd production entirely, so dance students have to shlep manually forwarding through chapters to get to choreography, technique and individual rhythms. To quote another reviewer, "producers take notice!"
3. The "Sonia and Issam go to Cairo" featurette is a valid bonus item, but it fails to make Sonia look more engaging, she acts like she is near asleep. She has nothing to say. It's boring to watch her try million hip scarves in her hotel room. You can find more colorful and creative tourist videos on the web. Issam talks a lot. Big time sales pitch here, including an artless attempt to present Sonia and other members of the "Belly Dance Superstars" travelling troupe as the actual superstars of their art form. Is this the self-image they cultivate in their company? Everybody in the performing arts world is a "star" but the term "superstar" implies at least name recognition and master performer-choreographer status, this is not the case with Sonia, even through I wish her success!

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay - not great
I bought this DVD looking for some fresh choreography / combinations to use with drum solos; both for routines and improvising in restaurant performances.I have to agree with one of the other reviewers - Sonia's on-camera personality is lifeless and not at all motivating. Most of the technique is beginner-level; they could have added some layering or ideas to spice it up for the intermediate / advanced dancer.

While I liked the idea of the bonus CD, I'm not able to find the choreographed routine music on it...???Perhaps it's spliced from several of the cuts on the CD, I'm not completely sure yet.I also liked how the drummer explained the rhythms and gave the dumbek pronunciation for each.Producers - take note - it's extremely annoying to put in all the work in learning a routine, and then not be able to find the music to which it should be performed!!!Please please give us title and artist, and if you're going to edit the piece, include it with the video.

3-0 out of 5 stars One retarded camera man
I'm subtracting two stars because you can't learn the technique and choreograph if the camera is focusing on the stomach and constantly changing angles. Where's the feet?!?!? Good technique and choreograph that is suitable for intermediate. Nothing too out-of-the-box. Sonia is very mellow and not enthusiastic in front of the camera. Some may find her boring and others may like her shy presence because it shows that you don't have to be extremely bubbly to dance. Good bonus CD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
This isn't really a bad DVD release, but it is on the low end of the quality material expected from National Geographic. The heavy metal music blaring over MTV-style edits of tornadoes and lightning storms occasionally dips into the murky waters of the worst of reality TV programming about disasters. Ditto the black-and-white recreations of tragedy a la Rescue 911. Techniques like these are used mostly during sections about disasters that don't get caught on tape as often, but it's still annoying.

The feature is only 55 minutes in length, but the DVD contains two extra programs, both around 20 minutes long (one on lightning strikes and one on tornadoes and storm chasers). They are both interesting and somewhat informative...in fact, I liked the program about tornadoes better than the feature.

And, while I do expect National Geographic to produce a more top-shelf product with a little more substance, the 5.1 audio and the crystal clear picture produces a treat for your senses. This release is definately designed to entertain rather than inform.

4-0 out of 5 stars Agreed - very good video but short on tornados
I agree with the other reviewers who gave this DVD 5 stars except on the point about tornados. There is one very good sequence in the video but the remainder of the tornado section is very sparse, especially compared to the time spent on other natural events. If you want tornados, I suggest finding another video.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eccellent DVD on nature.
The thing that impresses me about National Geographic DVD's is the amount of effort put into their documentaries. This one has everything. It covers tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, storms and building collapses.National Geographic puts a great deal of effort into covering the history of the disasters, far more so than others that cover the same thing. It covers the why of what happens, the history of the area, the type of land, the people and how it occurs. This is the DVD to own if you want one on the wild side of nature. It is only about 54 minutes long, but is a good DVD...

5-0 out of 5 stars One of NG's Best
I owned this on VHS. So when it came out on DVD, I just had to get it. National Geographic has always done an excellent job on their documentries.Natures Fury is a good example. The picture clarity is what you would expect on a DVD. The sound quality makes the tornadoes and booming thunder sound like it is in the room. If you like to chase violent storms or enjoy watching these wonders of nature, waste no time and buy this DVD! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but not Great!
I purchased this DVD for my 3 year old and soon realized that it was not for her. Within 15 minutes she lost interest. The actors spoke very fast and was often times unintelligible for a three year old to understand. I think that this would be great learning tool for an older child that could read the enclosed booklet at the same time. I am hoping that if I continue to play it that eventually she'll pick up small amounts of the language. At least then I can say I got my money's worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great start to learning French
My kids (3 and 5 years old) enjoy very much the film. They love guessing the answers for the games, and are already starting to sing the French songs.
I find this film a very good complement to the French songs we listen to. The words are simple and easy to catch on. And even my 3 year old shouts the colors along with the film! And the kids in the film have an energy that just keeps my kids interested.
It's just amazing how fast they can learn at that age.
Definitely a thumbs up! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Educative but excludes the Latest Tsunami Attack
This movie tells about the origin and creation of killer Tsunami waves and about the destruction caused by them in the past on Hawai, Japan and some places of U.S. It tells about the cause of Tsunami i.e an under sea earthquake due to collision of tactonic plates and thus displacing a great amount of water that runs to the shores with superspeeds and causes destructions on coastal areas. The concept is good and well picturised. The only thing missing is that it does not have the coverage of latest Tsunami that hit Sri Lanka, India Etc. ... Read more
