I have never studied ballet formally, but was familiar with the five basic positions and many of the other common ballet exercises. As a result, I fell in step quite easily and was able to concern myself more with proper form than might otherwise have been the case. The three warm-up segments had me laughing at my own clumsiness the first time around, but were much easier the second time I did the tape. This workout won't be especially difficult for anyone who's either studied ballet or is in fairly good shape. I found certain things challenging (like holding the arms in second position for the whole of the tendu segment), but overall, I think this tape is aimed more at helping the viewer develop flexibility and strength without taxing the cardiovascular system to any great degree. I have found that I can do this tape at 9:00 in the evening and fall easily asleep at 10:45. You will be perspiring but have an overall feeling of tranquility at the end. Even though I love this tape, I gave it only four stars because of what I perceive to be some minor problems. There is one bad edit in the stretching segment that threw me off at first. Peter Martins's cueing leaves a bit to be desired, and his instructions of "right" and "left" are from the dancers' point of view -- not from the perspective of the person following along. (I'm used to simply mirroring the people in workout videos and disregarding the narrator, so this is not a problem for me -- but could be confusing for others not experienced in doing that.) And finally, the dancers aren't always shown full-length, which makes it harder to know what the parts of their bodies that aren't being shown are doing at that particular moment. But, as I say, these are minor matters in an otherwise terrific video. They certainly do not keep me from recommending the New York City Ballet Workout!

Classical Pilates shows good fundamentals of using the magic circle, and then they demonstrate a solid beginning workout. After that, they take you into a realm where only the most highly trained classical instructors can demonstrate effectively: a beautiful intermediate level and an advanced level that is superbly executed. As if all of these workouts were not enough, there is something called the Reformer Mat workout. I had never heard of this before. If you go on vacation and don't have your Reformer with you, you can practice all the Reformer exercises on the Mat! This workout is a sight to behold. The woman who performs this workout is so beautiful, strong, and pleasant in her demeanor, that she makes Pilates look like a sheer joy to do! I have been telling all my friends and family about this DVD because it adds new interesting dimensions to regular Pilates mat exercises. If you get this DVD, you will want to tell your friends! One last thing: the man that narrates the workouts coaches you with this really cool accent. I don't know where he is from, but his words and voice make me understand the Pilates exercises in ways I never dreamed of before. His voice lulls me into deeper wisdom about the Pilates method every time I listen to the DVD.
The magic circle makes me feel my muscles more in the center of my body, the area that Pilates people call the Powerhouse. And you must keep your mind focused and completely 'present.' You don't have time to think about anything else, which is good! In this multitasking world, it feels like such a rare and satisfying experience just to be completely involved in what you are doing in the moment. And time flys right by! Woooosh! You're done! And you had fun! There's also an extraordinary workout at the end of this DVD called the Reformer Mat Workout. This workout seems to be the final frontier of Pilates mat exercise routines. It is a awesome challenge for the mind and body, and I will be working on it for many years to come.
This DVD has basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. Afterward, there is a beautiful creature showing something called "Reformer on the Mat Workout." It's fantastic to watch! And I've incorporated some of these exercises into my mat routine. I'm really happy with this DVD!
At the beginning, the magic circle is not easy to work with. As you gradually learn the exercises, you start having fun. And you feel the difference! I felt Pilates mat exercises much better, much deeper in my muscles than before. The magic circle somehow makes exercises NEW by making your muscles work differently. You connect with the powerhouse directly! After the magic circle exercise routines, there is something called the Reformer Mat Workout. The entire section is beyond my current ability, but I can do many of the exercises pretty well. These exercises definitely spice up my Pilates mat sessions. My new motto is "Wake up, hit the mat, then live it up!"
The magic circle Pilates workout is simultaneously gentle and physically challenging. It's also mentally interesting and keeps my attention. I don't get bored, which is very gratifying! Sometimes I workout on the treadmill, but it definitely does not challenge my mind. I can space out and watch TV or listen to music on the treadmill. But with Pilates, my mind and body must try to coordinate all the intriguing movements and goals to improving the movements. I bought this video because it was recommened by a friend, and because of the reviews on Amazon.com. For $19.95 you cannot have a better Pilates training guide, unless you hire a teacher to come to your home. Thank you for making this video. ... Read more

If you are a veteran of the Walk Away The Pounds walking program, you will have no problem completing these walking workouts. It is a do-able supplement to the Walk Away workouts, for days when you don't want to use weights and need a little more variety. These DVDs do not have any strength training, and uses very little in the way of arm movements. They are purely cardio workouts. However, there are a few things that really date these DVDs. Be aware that they are a re-released old workout from 1992. The music is very dated. Leslie is also continually referring to using a VCR with the workout: "Fast forward to the cool down" or "if you didn't catch this step, rewind and do it again." The clothes and hair styles also really date this DVD, from the "big sock" look to the layered leotards. The moves themselves are more complicated than her Walk Away workouts. For example, she has you doing several variations on side steps - lots and lots of 80's style grapevines, stepping to the corners at an angle, and even backwards side steps. The bonus features on all of the DVDs include a short biography of Leslie (non-interactive), and a URL link to Current Video (the manufacturer). For example, The 2-mile DVD features a three-minute introduction, where the walkers themselves are interviewed about the walking workouts and their success with them. Leslie then introduces the walkers (the same walkers as the "Miracle Mile" DVD). What I really appreciate about Leslie's choice of walkers is that they are "real" people. One of the walkers lost over 100 pounds! While I really appreciate Leslie's Walk Away Workouts, I find this release to still need some tweaking (how about a make over?). I only use it occassionally, to throw some variety into my workouts. If you're bored, and looking for something else to try with Leslie, give this a go.
The first DVD is the "Miracle Mile". This offers a great workout if you are in a hurry one morning or you just do not have the energy to pursue a two or three mile workout. Yes, the DVD is dated, looks to be early 90's to me, but the workout is just as good as her current releases! As long as I am sweating and I feel good, I do not mind the dated looks, styles, etc. The second DVD is the Two Mile Challenge. It is not hard at all and takes all of 25 minutes. This is what I do on a regular day and I can DEFINITELY feel AND see a difference-even within just a week. Just between us girls, my legs and the ::gasp:: cellulite is actually going away and firming up! (I've had a big struggle with this, but I do have a small case of it). I feel better and look forward to getting up and working out before even worrying about breakfast! The third DVD is the Weight Loss 4 Mile Challenge. It contains three segments. The first segment is only 1 mile long in which Leslie walks by herself doing her "common" walkaerobic moves and feels more like a warm up to me. During the second segment, Leslie is joined by two older ladies and one older man. The moves are the same, but longer and more intense if that makes sense. This segment is 20 minutes long which includes a 1.5 mile walk! In the third segment, Leslie is joined by three younger ladies, which is where the challenge really kicks in. After going 2.5 miles, you have to give it everything you've got to make it. This segment is also 20 minutes long with a 1.5 mile walk. Followed by a cool-down, this is my absolute FAVORITE L.S. Walking DVD. I highly recommend these DVD's for anyone who likes to walk in the comfort of your home, lose weight sensibly, variety of workouts and who do not have alot of time for working out. Leslie is an angel! Her programs are absolutely amazing. Remember, activity before food, and you'll stay healthy always! Good Luck and God Bless! :) P.S. One more thing I forgot to mention, when I started segment two of the 4 mile walk, I felt as if I was learning Salsa moves! Leslie wants you to tap, put your hips into it, so on and so forth. Later on, I kinda laughed to myself with Leslie said, "C'mon, it's just like the Mambo". This is why I LOVE Leslie and this DVD--it just does not feel like "working out" but you come out sweating everytime. Have fun!!

It's fun because you can always do a different combination so it doesn't get boring. And each of the 9 segments are not your typical exercises. For example, if you're tired of doing ordinary crunches, the ab segments have so many different crunch variations as well as other great ab exercises. The exercises are easy to do. The instructors explain the routines, keep you motivated & are fun to workout with. The exercises are designed to give you maximum results in minimum time. It's great for people who don't have a lot of time for exercise - who can't spare 10 minutes?
Now, if you are looking for an overall body workout that includes cardio, this isn't the DVD for you. But, if you are like me and use other tapes or DVD's for the cardio aspect of your workout but also want to get in some toning and spot work after the fact, buy this DVD! The wonderful thing about it is that you are able to choose between 9 different workout segments, program from one to three segments at a time and mix and match them daily so that no two workout days are alike. I really love this option because there are days where I've already worked my buns and legs to death but haven't done much in the way of abs and arms. No problem - I just put in this DVD and choose one of the three ab 10 minute ab workouts and the 10 minute arm/upper body workout and the problem is solved. Also, the nice thing about each of the 9 segments is that there's a little countdown clock in the lower corner of your TV screen that lets you know where you are at in the segment and how much longer you have to push yourself before you're done. I like this because some days I just want to be done with my workout and that little clock works as a psychological motivator to tell me "it's almost over... only 3 minutes to go..." The instructors on this DVD are really good as well - so much so that I've become a fan of Minna Lessig and have bought both her Balanced Blend workout and her Emergency Workout and haven't been disappointed with either and highly recommend them both as well. The only additional item you'll need for this DVD is a set of hand weights for the arm and arm/leg segment and then... get ready for a great spot/toning workout! You won't be disappointed!!

Description From the ancient knowledge of the past, to the advanced science of today, Goldman reveals a magical world that is created, healedand transformed by the power of sound. In this insightful and informative presentation, he introduces us to some of the basic concepts in the use of sound as a theraputic and healing modality. Included in this presentation are subjects such as:the vibratory nature of our world, brainwave activity, bio-resonant frequency, sonic entrainment, the magic of Cymatics, the effects of sound on the immune system and the power of right intention in the healing process. During the course of this DVD, Goldman also discusses and demonstrates the use of the voice as a potent instrument for the restoration and maintenance of optimal health, how the power of music can assist us in leading more vital, energetic and well-balanced lives and how we can use simple techniques of sound healing to bring more luminosity into our bodies and energy fields. In addition, through the use of visual images, he shows us how sound vibrations can change molecular structure, as well as how sonic frequency coupled with intent equals healing. Included are excerpts from Jonathan Goldman's many rich and meditative albums.

Before I found this dvd, I'd been looking for one in the UK for months, but they all seemed to be aimed specifically at women, and were mainly intent on just reducing fat - none of them actually showed you how to use the Swiss Ball to it's full advantage. If, like myself, you have a swiss ball at home and up to now have only used it as a piece of novelty furniture, then this is the dvd you need to finally make some real use of it! The presenter takes you though the correct use of the ball and guides you though a series of exercises which look innocent enough until your abs start to scream at you the next day (a sure sign that it's doing the job!). Just watching the presenter at work is inspiration enough as you can see every muscle the exercise is intended to train flex as as each exercise is perfomed. It sounds daft I know, but for me, this alone is an enormous help as you can see straight away whether or not your doing the exercise properly by comparing which of your muscles are working against those that are flexing on screen! Music and other distractions are kept to a minimum, and at every stage you're guided along with an informative but unobtrusive commentary. You can even hear the presenter breathing, which soon makes you realise when your own breathing is out of whack (something I'm always getting wrong when exercising!) I'm a 34 yr old guy who's used gyms and other abs equipment in the past, but I've NEVER found a training programme that's been as effective as this! I've been using it now for a few months on and off, and it soon becomes second nature. It may take me some time to get the sort of abs the presenter has, but at least now I'm doing the RIGHT exercises, the RIGHT way help me achieve this! ... Read more

The most motivating factor in doing these exercises is seeing Burr (who is in her late 50's and looks AMAZING!) and three other women from various backgrounds do these exercises and look good doing it. They promise you'll start seeing results after 10 workouts, and you are supposed to do this workout 3 times a week. I really have trouble doing it more than twice a week, but the DVD's contain bonus workouts which are shorter and are easier to squeeze in when you're low on time. You don't need much equipment for these workouts: 3-5 lb. dumbbells, a sturdy chair, and a strap (like a bathrobe belt) for doing leg stretches. So that was nice too...I already had all the equipment at home. The workout goes by fast. 45 minutes is over before you know it. The only complaints that I really have is that the exercises are very similar between the two DVD's...I would've liked a little more variety to prevent the boredom that will eventually come from doing these workouts over and over. And Burr is encouraging and motivational, but can sometimes be annoying. I would just prefer that she instruct in the proper form for the exercises and remind you to breathe on occasion and leave it at that. The words of encouragement she speaks seem kind of forced and strange. But after using this for a few weeks now, I am beginning to see a difference. I don't expect a dancer's body, since I am rather short with stubby legs, but I can already tell that I'm a bit leaner. Although I would suggest doing cardio in addition to this, since you're not getting a cardio workout here (I do cardio at least twice a week in addition to these DVD's).

The good stuff: it's based on sound techniques, it works and doesn't damage your lower back. Now that should be enough but I'll babble a bit more. With the DVD, you get three worthwhile programs: stretch, abs and arms. The other programs are pretty much worthless filler (with one exception). The constant movement even offers a *mild* cardio workout. Converting the program to build wouldn't be all that tough. The abs routine would just require more reps and a couple of weights. The arms routine needs a set of dumb bells that would allow working each group to failure and a few sets. So, for the arms, figure 3 sets of 8 minutes and then another six minutes for all the bell changes. Now, for the bad stuff: music - bad; dialog (i.e. "Ok, gang") - cheesy, enthusiasm of two support people - they look bored and, in their defense, they are bored. She gets modified push ups and no weights and he gets, what looks like, 5 pound dumb bells.... pulleeeze.
