3-0 out of 5 stars Good Learner, Intermediate and Full Posture demonstrations
I bought this DVD after having used the Living Arts Basic Matwork DVD for about 2 months. I purchased Brooke Siler's The Pilates Body book at the same time.

The instructor's (Deason) approach to Pilates instruction seems to grow from a Yoga practice. The DVD starts with a 10 minute body-awareness session centering on breathing and movement during the breath. This is good for the overweight and provides a good foundation for the principles the workout is based on.

The workout sessions offer 4 workout POV's (beginner, moderate, or full and combined). I can keep up with the moderate but can't keep up with Deason, the full practice model, for the entire session. This is where the fourth view is useful, a longer shot where you can view all postures simultaneously (with some inserted close-ups that keep the camera position from becoming stale). PFW also does more reps of each exercise so this session is longer to perform.

Also, some postures have a 'Pilates tutor' section available. In movements where this feature is available a small figure doing 'The Teaser' appears in the lower right corner of the screen. The graphic signals the availability of a section on the disk that explains the posture for those who are new to Pilates. If you are a beginner to Pilates, please view these sections. PLEASE, don't follow the Full practice forms until you've been doing Piltes for a couple of weeks. You could hurt yourself. Better to start slow and stay with it than push to hard and and be sidelined by injury or burn out.

By now, you're thinking, 'So why did this guy only give the DVD a 3?' The style of PFW is more Yoga-centric, which is good for some but doesn't really hold my interest. I prefer the more standard instructor-led style of Ana Caban. Also, and I learned this after completing the Siler book, some of the exercices used in the DVD are modifications of actual Pilates mat workout practice. So if authenticity of technique is what you crave, this really isn't the right DVD.

Not to say that this isn't a good workout. It is. If you do the exercises as instructed you will feel it the next day. This is as it should be. So much of the Pilates work is isometric, you can always make the workout harder as you get stronger.

I would have given this work a 3.5 if I could.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Workout by Ms. Deason
I am new to Pilates, but have been using Suzanne Deason's Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss for a while now. I decided to try her Pilates for Weight Loss because I like the tranquility of her other videos and the way she takes the time to explain the benefits of the various movements. I feel this video offers an effective workout regardless of your fitness level. If you are new to Pilates, as I am, I would strongly recommend that you watch the video through a couple of times before actually beginning the workout, so that you can focus on the breathing techniques and instructions that Ms. Deason provides. The video is fast paced, but it is well worth the effort to learn the routine. Overall it provides an awesome workout for the abs and is a great way to start your day. I intend to use both the Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss and Pilates for Weight Loss videos in combination, as part of my overall weight loss program. I highly recommend this video.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite as a Beginner
I think that which VHS you prefer depends a lot on your temperment, just as much as
the quality of the workout. For Pliates and Yoga, I prefer straight-forward, calm and
pleasant instruction (nothing intrusive) like that of Suzanne Deason and Alan Finger.
On the other hand, for Aerobics, I prefer more animated instruction (even annoying
Richard Simmons to that of comatose Jane Fonda who is totally devoid of
personality). With that said, this VHS is my favorite of the 5 that I own (Pilates for Dummies-which I also like a lot and which I found to be invaluable for learning the exercises before
moving on to Suzanne Deason's VHS and the 3-SET of Mari Winsor-whom I can't stand-
she talks, actually, yells, incessantly and says little that is useful. She wastes half the time
making stupid comments and her tapes are nothing exceptional). I do recommend "Pilates
for Dummies" before doing this tape, because, if you are brand new to Pilates, I think that
you will be somewhat confused withour prior instruction. This tape is approximately 55 minutes of actual workout time. The first 10 minutes or so are devoted to "Awareness", awakening your muscles with various gentle exercises and easing you into the Workout. You then move on to the "Workout" which is about 40 minutes long. (I prefer a long workout to a 20 minute one) The tape ends with another 5 minutes or so of Yoga to relax you and make your back feel great. After the Bridge, you do the SideStretch and finish with the Hammock. There are 3 women doing 3 variations on each exercise. You follow whichever one you like according to your level of proficiency- Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced. Suzanne Deason makes you go slowly into each Pilates exercise (pose), one step at a time, you come out of each one the same way. If you do this properly (abdomen tightened - this is the KEY to reaping the benefits of Pliates) even the setup and easing out are pretty intense for a beginner like me. If I didn't like this VHS so much (as I do with her "Yoga for Weight Conditioning"), I'd give it no stars for lying about the weight loss part. I believe that using weight loss in her titles is a cheap ploy to get people to buy her tapes. That's my only complaint about her and her tapes. DO NOT expect to lose weight from this and DO NOT expect to see immediated results, although, you'll feel results right away. I find this workout to be both relaxing and invigorating, and, I feel great afterwards. I've been doing Pilates for about 6 weeks. I used "Pilates for Dummies" for 2 weeks, then switchewd to this tape. As a beginner, I love it (I do some intermediate and some advanced levels now). I can't say if I'll still find it enjoyable and challenging when I'm more proficient.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a workout, only for extreme beginners
I found this video to be definitely not for me. I have a little experience with Pilates, so the moves were much too basic. Even if I had no experience, there is minimal cardio benefit and is mostly used for strengthening abs. Even if you're interested in strengthening your core, I would HIGHLY suggest looking for another Pilates or yoga video. The pace for this one is much too slow and I found myself waiting much too long in resting poses for the next instruction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good intro DVD, but you will grow out of it.
This DVD was my introduction to Pilates. I started with the "partially modified" level (medium difficulty) and after the first few times I was getting pretty good at the moves. Soon I noticed feeling more toned in areas, particularly in what they call the "core", such as my lower back and abs.

However, after a few months I was ready to try the advanced level and was disappointed to discover that, unlike the two lower levels, it's not possible to view just the woman doing the advanced moves on the screen - you have to have all three women on the screen, one doing the advanced, one the partially modified, and one the fully modified. It requires too much patience to hear the instructions for all three levels when I already know what I'm doing. So I am ready to try my next DVD, one that moves along at a faster pace.

In conclusion, I do not think you will be disappointed with this DVD, but you may find yourself outgrowing it. I suppose if you have some friends who have also expressed interest in pilates, you can pass it along to them when you're ready to move on.

Cheers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Attunement!!!
I have now purchased Steve Murray's... "Reiki Healing Attunement", "Reiki 1st Level Attunements", "Reiki 2nd Level" and "Master Attunement".
I was very impressed with the healing energy that comes forth through these much needed DVD'S of Reiki attunements.

However, if you are looking for information on the history of Reiki, you will not find it here. There are many wonderful books out there for that kind of knowledge, but if you are truly interested in receiving Reiki attunements then these are the DVD's I recommend. If you are wanting attunements to be able to heal yourself, others and this beautiful world we live in, then Steve's DVD's are for you.

I was blown away by the love I felt and the flow of positive energy. The attunements are powerful! I am so eternally thankful someone stepped outside their comfort zone and made Reiki attunements available at such an affordable price. Reiki is needed now more than ever. This is truly healing for the now and the future.

If you are interested in making a positive difference in yourself, and others, I urge you to get these Reiki attunements. And don't let people tell you that to be able to receive attunements you have to do it in secret, and it has to cost a lot of money. Reiki energy is a gift from God and is a free, loving energy to anyone that has a desire for healing.

I thank Steve for having a vision for the betterment of everyone!

This will honor you where you are, and inspire you to go beyond your impossibilities!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love all the Programs
I have bought most of Steve Murray's videos, dvds and books. And love them all. His new Reiki book is one of the best, if not the best. His programs have made Reiki available for everyone

5-0 out of 5 stars Video Brings Healing and Peace
I have watched this video two or three times. It has helped me to experience a feeling of peace regarding the problems I worked on, and the faith that a higher power will help guide events, my thoughts and my emotions in such a way that the problems will be healed. When I watch this video, I see colors in the crystal. I feel as if I become one with the crystal, and that my problems are being surrounded with light and healed. I also feel healing heat in my body as soon as the video starts playing, even before the actual attunement begins. I highly recommend this video.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful program
I use all the programs. They are as I said many times...Wonderful. You can read my other reviews on the programs for more info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Realistic and easy to follow
I liked the pace, the information, and the quality of the camera work. This is a well shot video. I will be looking for future editions to the line.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good thing
I like the For Dummies series. They are far more superior than the Idiot's Guide due to the way the books are laid out and the authors the publisher chooses. Having this "bias" already, I was quite intrigued when I saw the DVD. What the heck, let's try it out. And the result is... not bad.

It's quick and dirty work out on all parts of the abdominal. I got a kick out of it. There are about 10 exercises in all plus warm up and cool down. The music is light, the teacher smiles a lot (a bit much really), no fuss no frill, just getting down to business. On the negative side, there are no pauses really between exercises. You have to stop your DVD player between exercises especially if you are a beginner. My guess is For Dummies is saving on run time. But at 12 bucks per DVD, I won't complain ... too much. :) Overall, I'm quite satisfied. You'll like it if you have some training in abs already; you'll have an easier time to catch on. It might be a bit hard for a beginner given the pace of the DVD. But it shouldn't stop you from giving this a shot. Just remember to pause in between exercises. Oh and one more thing. The DVD doesn't offer much exericse on the lower back (the opposite muscle group). You should always work out on opposite muscle group to avoid imbalance of muscle strength. So, do a few on your own. There are much written in the way of what lower back exercises are, so I'll spare you the details here. Have fun, and have a good sweat!! ... Read more

One of the essential principles of t'ai chi is complete relaxation, letting the lower body sink as if rooted into the ground while the upper body floats above. The movements are slow, circular, fluid, and balanced. In T'ai Chi for Health: Yang Long Form, instructor Terence Dunn teaches the complex, 108-posture Long Form with clarity and patience. The format of this 120-minute video is similar to T'ai Chi for Health: Yang Short Form: 7-minute explanation of the qualities, philosophy, and health benefits of t'ai chi; 10-minute breathing and warm-up segment; 20-minute introduction to basic postures; full hour of step-by-step instruction in the 108 postures of the Yang Long Form; and finally a 15-minute Yang Long Form demonstration. Dunn is an excellent instructor, explaining each move in detail and demonstrating with grace, suppleness, and strength. --Joan Price ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Much more bad than good
I ordered this DVD on the basis of some of the reviews - it was a big mistake. While Terry Dunn is very relaxing to listen to and obviously knows his stuff, the quality of the DVD makes its all but useless as a training tool. The DVD does not permit selection of the section I want to perform. The section that introduces you to the basic forms is so washed out that you cannot tell what the foot and hand positions are supposed to be.
Finally, in the last segment where Terry performs the complete form, the camera pans in too often so that you cannot actually see the form from start to finish.
Sadly, I highly recommend you seek another source of knowledge for this wonderful art.I know I will be looking for something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I purchased this, with much trepidation, based on one person's 5 star review BUT indeed this is a wonderful video. The music is very appropriate and peaceful, the instruction is clear enough for beginners but the instructor's expertise is clear and will provide learning for many, many hours to come, and the instructor is wonderful, no silly jokes that will get annoying, very to the point yet not dry, seems very genuine.I am very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Video
This is the best Tai Chi video on the market.I've been studying martial arts for 16 years and this is the 1st Tai Chi video that i have seen that teaches the correct form move for move.Excellent video for learning this form.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner, but...
This is a reasonably good video for someone who has little or no Tai Chi experience. The instructor does an excellent job of describing the weight shifts, and subtle movements. The video is disappointing for the intermediate student. It is advertised as a demonstration/training video for the Yang LONG form, yet only addresses the first three sections - half of it.I was hoping for a detailed view of sections 4 through 6, which are not addressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall GREAT video!
I would have given this video 5 stars but I do think for an absolute beginner, it is difficult to follow and there are some basic instructions missing. I took Kung Fu for about a year and am used to learning a 30, 40, 50+ step form. What this video is missing is an explaination as to how you should approach your Tai Chi training. If you've taken a martial art, Tai Chi itself or even ball room dancing, this is a great video.

For those who have not take any martial art etc, here is some advise. When you start to learn the form, realize it is going to take A VERY LONG TIME for you to be able to learn the entire form correctly. To start, learn the first 5-8 steps and then turn off the video. Keep practicing until you can do the steps without thinking about them. Go back to the video and do the next 5-8 steps. Then turn off the video and do all the steps you know until you do ALL of them automatically. Keep this up until you learn the whole form. This will take weeks if not months to perfect. It is possible to learn the form in a few days and be automatic in it within a week or two, but you've got to dedicate some serious hours to Tai Chi training.

All in all, a wondeful video that is easy to follow. Just take your time and be patient. Once you learn the form by heart, you can concetrate on the relaxation power of the form and less on remembering the sequence of manuevers. Good Luck!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good with some technical problems
I have loved Kathy Smith workout tapes/discs for years. I'm glad she did this type of a workout but I have a few issues with it: 1) The lower body section relies too heavily on squats which can lead to an imbalance in muscle development, 2) the abdominal section is not that great, 3) the stretching sections are pretty fast, 4) sometimes I wished for a better view of proper positioning or technique.

Technically, there are a couple of problems with the DVD: 1) The main menu is incomplete. Hello! What's the problem here???? 2) Free stability ball workout? I don't think so. At least not on my disk and apparently not on some of the other reviewers' copies either. These kinds of mistakes are foolish in this day and age.

I did think that the upper body work out was unique and challenging. I also think that it is fairly easy to scale this workout to your fitness level. She's no nonsense, not annoying, and they keep the silly production stuff to a minimum.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOOOOOOOOVE this workout!
I am new to exercise, having dropped just over 50 pounds in the last year...and I've always hated exercise...until just recently. (Now I work out 5-6 days a week, and I crave it!) I started with the DVD from the weight loss program I was on, and did that for about 2 months until boredom set in. Then I discovered Kathy Smith! Lift Weight to Lose Weight is the 5th Kathy Smith video I've purchased, and is already my favorite. I love the programmable feature--one of my other DVD's was supposed to have that, and it didn't work. I love the squat section, the glute section (OH MY WORD! The glute section!), the standing upper body section (she nearly kills me on the triceps part every time); I haven't tried the stability ball workout yet, so I don't really feel qualified to comment on that. I don't know about anyone else, but when I finish this workout, I feel fantastic! I know it's making a difference...I was sore, GOOD sore for at least two days, the first few times I did the routines. I'm so glad I purchased this one--it was money well spent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout!
I have no time to workout as a stay at home mom of two kids - 27 and 9 months old. I bought this DVD to try to get a little weight training in and in only 20 minutes I get a great workout! I love it! If I can find 20 minutes to do it anyone can. The DVD is easy to follow and Kathy is not annoying at all. I was able to find the bonus routines quite easily, you need to go to the next screen(there is a little arrow on the bottom). I like that I can do a 10 min. segment on arms and a 10 mins segment on legs and I'm done, or I can do all arms or all legs. Either way it is only 20 mins!

4-0 out of 5 stars Finding Incomplete Menu
A couple of reviews noted that there was no stability ball workout and an incomplete menu. I had the same issue and then finally figured it out. What appears to be the main menu is actually just the first of 2 main menus. To get to the second you need to select the triangle at the bottom. This takes you to the second menu and allows you to access the stability ball workout ( which is fun).

5-0 out of 5 stars Muscles Have Love/Hate Relationship with this DVD
Kathy Smith is one of my favorites. I like that this video challenges my muscles to the point where I can feel them the next day. If you don't enjoy the next day "good" hurt, you can use lighter weights or no weights at all.

In spite of the fact that the DVD cover boasts of a non existent 20-minute stability ball workout, I highly recommend this workout DVD. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
It certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I thought I was going to get a GOOD WALKING video but in turn got more strength training with this stretchy band thing that I don't even have. I didn't like how it began with walking only to stop walking and start toning. I would have liked it better if it were strictly a walking video with walking all the time with added toning, not stopping walking while toning. I don't much care for this one and I LOVE the other tapes I own but this one, I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivating
I am a former couch potatoe. I did not like exercise before I tried this DVD. Leslie has motivated me to get up and move. I like the results that I've gotten. I've lost 10 pounds adjusting my eating habits and exercising five days out of the week. I've noticed that my legs and upper back and arms have begun to respond to the toning exercises. This is a miracle for me. The best thing about it is it's do-able! I can't do aerobics--I'm too clumsy. But I've decided that I can do more exercise than I thought I could do. My next challenge will probably be pilates. But I won't abandon Leslie Sansone's tapes. By the way, Leslie is not irritating, she comes off as a genuine, nice person with no diva qualities. P.S. I'm sending a copy to my sister who has diabetes and is seriously overweight.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hardly walking strong!
I expected a lot more toning from this dvd/vhs, based on the title and description of the video. Although Ms. Sansone promotes the benefits of resistance work with the "stretchie" and the "interval training," this amounted to little more than maybe 10-15 minutes of actual toning work out of 30 minutes in the video. Although the walking steps are done to a brisk soundtrack, I also find it difficult to believe the level of activity for the video amounts to a 2 mile walk.

The pros - there are some worthwhile moves with the stretchie - some of the best are the lunge/squat moves. Once you learn these moves, you can easily repeat them on your own without using the tape if you want more resistance work.
Also, its great that she still includes the warm up period and cool-down stretching.

The cons - simply not enough toning. I feel I'm getting better results for my upperbody by using handweights. Also, the tape is more of a cardio/toning combination and it's too short on either end to really meet my personal cardio or toning goals per workout. I definitely have to augment this tape with other toning exercises or cardio time.

Still, overall a pleasant enough experience and I probably enjoyed it more than her regular 2-mile "cardio" walk programs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
This video is similar to her others, with new people behind her and new music. The other reviewer is not totally correct in regards to the "annoying" music - that particular soundtrack is only for the first 5-7 minutes of the entire 30 minute video.

My only "wish" for this one is that she did more toning for even more areas. This is not to say that the toning is lacking, really... there are lots of different moves that target different muscle groups, with brisk walking in between. I guess I just sort of wanted even more (maybe a little longer than 30 minutes?).

Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with this title. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tape to add to your collection
I got this tape as part of the whole collection of her "Walk Away the Pounds Express", and am very pleased with it. It's a tape that you may not do every day, I just view it as a supplement to use on days when I want a little something different. The stretchie band may not come with this video on it's own, but I got it with the set. If you don't have it, you can just use resistance bands available in any sports store. I would imagine you could even just use plain old 2-3 pound hand weights as well. I can really feel it in my arms and shoulders when I use it, and she does incorporate squats and lunges into the routine too. You do do some of the walking in it too, it's not all toning and strength training. She even manages to make this count as a "2-mile walk" for the day! It's a good tape to use for those days when you feel like a little variety, VERY easy to follow and doesn't leave you feeling wiped out at the end. Good one for your Leslie Sansone collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Yoga Workout For Dummies
I have other VCR yoga tape that I have used. This is the first DVD yoga instructional video that I have bought. I am a beginner in the practice of yoga and the way that Sara presents this material makes it very easy to follow. I have been using this DVD every day since I bought the disk. Because this is a DVD I am able to go the part of instruction that I want to review immediately. That is a nice time saving convenience. I use my laptop computer to watch the video so that I can do the exercise and not have to twist around to see the video. It is also convenient to use when I travel. Sara does a wonderful job explaining the poses, showing beginners alternatives to do so that they can still do the exercises and get the benefits of the exercises. I find this video very comfortable to use and would recommend it to anyone that is thinking about beginning yoga. For those of you interested in the spiritual side of yoga there is not much of that presented on this video.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRODUCTION TO YOGA--START NOW!
I have never really done yoga, or so I thought until I viewed this tape. Being active all of my life has kept me flexible and so I was surprised to know that I had been practicing "yoga" without knowing it. A few of the poses were new to me but mostly they are common sense stretches. OR SO I THOUGHT. Now I know, thanks to Sara, stretching isn't yoga. Yoga is an art that unites the body and mind. It combines poses with focus and breathing which result in a feeling of calm AWARENESS. Sara has the gift--a very pleasant, friendly, poised and positive instructor that is the perfect example of the way yoga will make you feel: calm, relaxed, focused, balanced, positive and strong.

Here are the "daily dozen" of which each should be held through six breaths:
1 Cat pose*
2 Mountain pose*
3 Standing Forward Bend
4 Lunge
5 Tree*
6 Standing Side Stretch Pose*
7 Downward Facing Dog*
8 Cobra*
9 Child's pose
10 Seated Spinal Twist*
11 Seated Forward Bend*
12 Final Relaxation pose
(* a favorite pose of mine/ feels great)

Sara says, "THIS IS YOUR PRIVATE TIME. SO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT ALLOWS YOU TO FOCUS AND REALLY ENJOY YOUR PRACTICE." That being said, I recommend using this tape until you are happy with your results (yoga is not competitive) and then muting it and do your moves to your favorite dreamy, inspiring music. As you advance, get another book or video, or incorporate your favorite moves from different tapes (I really love Tai Chi) and go through your own poses.

BOTTOM LINE: This is a terrific yoga introduction of poses concentrating on the proper alignment, breathing, and focus for the beginner to advanced athlete. However, if you already have yoga experience you might want to try a more advanced tape or class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Curious About The Yoga Hype? This is a Perfect Way to Learn
I know many who still don't want to buy into the "Dummies" series! They are Dummies for not taking advantage of these great resources. This is an excellent tape/DVD, especially if you are new to fitness or are a returning 40-something as I am. Oh yes, I'm also a guy. I've found yoga (and deep stretching) to be a perfect compliment to a pick-up game of basketball, an hour of karate practice, or a cardio kickboxing aerobics session. The relaxed tone of this DVD is also a nice way to gently unwind after a stressful day at work or with the kids.

If you are sore for a week after you work out, or jog, or play weekend sports, chances are you're not stretching as much as you should, especially afterwards. This DVD/tape will show you that basic yoga is an excellent way to gently stretch your muscles, reduce stress, and relax. The deep breathing that is key to yoga and is well described by the workout instructor "Sara Ivanhoe" also helps you to think more clearly and creatively. Despite the yoga postures on the DVD seeming relatively simple, I monitor my pulse during this workout and am routinely up around 110-115, and work up a nice glow of a sweat.

I really believe that yoga combined with other types of exercise is a way to keep your mind and body in synch. I searched for a tape/DVD to replicate my experience of doing yoga in our local health club, and found this one to be the best and easiest to follow. At the low price, it's also a great buy for the traveler who might be carrying a laptop with a DVD player.

Oh yeah...if you embarrass easily, contrary to the image of yoga that I once had in my head, you don't have to tuck your legs up over the top of your head or otherwise contort your body in weird ways. The basic yoga "postures" demonstrated by Sara feel natural, and actually look pretty cool (even with a guy doing them).

3-0 out of 5 stars Gives the Tiny Details, but Lacking in Routine
This tape is -- as everyone else has mentioned -- an good tape for the beginner. What also needs to be mentioned is that it is a technical tape. Not technical as in jargony and difficult to understand, but that it gives the details of how to do and not to do a pose. The upside to this is that it explains to beginners the poses. The downside is there really isn't any flow, so the tape isn't meant to be used for daily practice. It should be seen of as an adjunct and complement to your daily yoga tape, not your routine. A book could fill these shoes just as easily, and there are lots of excellent books out there. Try something by Rodney Yee for beginners instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to yoga
Twelve basic yoga postures are presented here in non-intimidating language. Ivanhoe calmly goes over the fundamentals of each posture as well as the importance of breathing. Anyone who thinks that they need to be initiated into a secret philosophical organization before they can do their first yoga posture will be relieved by this video.

Throughout, a narrator makes points about common misconceptions, "Bewares" (or common mistakes) and helpful tips and tricks.

The big downside to this tape is that it takes quite some time to get through the twelve postures (just a little over 45 minutes). While most absolute beginners would do well to spend that much time listening to all of the tips on alignment and breathing, slightly more advanced beginners (e.g., they've read a book or even gone to a class) may not derive as much benefit. Even the brand new beginner will probably outgrow this tape sooner rather than later.

Having said that, Ivanhoe is a very good instructor on this video, balancing calm and humor. Again, no one will be intimidated by her approach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Abs tight!
I have 5 different kind of Pilate DVD. Cardio Pilates is my favorite, because it's concentrated on abs, balance and posture very well. I feel really warmed up and my heart are pumping and I feel like I done some cardio excercise. My abs are flatter than used to be. I love this DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good!
Really helped me tone my abs, I used this to target the abdominals cardio wasn't as important to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pilates workout with a twist
I love doing pilates at home and this new DVD is a great addition to my DVD collection. You do a traditional 40 minute pilates workout with great instruction and reminders on how/when to breathe. After the pilates Ana leads you through a walking sequence that really ups your heart rate (the cardio portion of the workout). It lasts 15 minutes and she leads you through different movements, lunges, etc.I really enjoy this workout and appreciate a little cardio after doing my pilates.I also have the "Bands" Gaiam Pilates video and the Mari Windsor Pilates DVDs.

3-0 out of 5 stars modify and you'll be fine
i am new to the whole workout video thing, and i know that ana caban is a good pilates instructor, so i gave this one a shot. the warm up is your typical pilates.... the 100, leg circles, criss-cross, etc, and not very many reps. it just gets you warmed up for about 15-20 minutes. then the cardio segment is low-impact, low-intensity, and VERY repetitive. that segment is 20 minutes. i mean seriously, it's four basic low-impact moves, with two short bursts of high impact. unless you're sleeping, you'll get bored.

so i thought i had wasted a whole 17 bucks on this one, but i'm finding that i end up using it more than my others. i modify the cardio with weights, repeat segments to make it longer, and listen to my own music instead of the ridiculous soundtrack they have in the video. i modify the warm up by doing more stretches. so each time i do it it's a little different, according to what i need on a particular day. who can just follow along with a video all the time, anyway?

i have serious back issues, and this one i feel is a good choice because it's anatomically sound and won't injure you. you just have to kick it up a little when you are feeling up to it, and do the workout as is when you are not. if you're ok with taking that initiative, you will like this video. if you want to just put it in the player and follow along to the end, you may want to pick something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars could use a bit more cardio
Overall, I'm very happy with this DVD.
The pilates workout is great for both beginners and regular pilates enthusiasts. Advanced users may find it too easy.. I don't know.
Regardless, this gives you a great workout and DOES get your heart rate up towards the end(keeps it up, too).
The cardio does leave a little to be desired, though.
The moves are WAY easy/standard. These are things you already know how to do. The plus side is you won't really need the instruction for this portion of the program.
However, if all you're looking for is a long, great(but fairly easy) pilates home workout with a short, standard, easy to do cardio ending; you've found your ideal DVD.
The instructor is very clear with instructions and great with reminders to breathe, keeping your stomach "scooped", etc.

Again, this would make an EXCELLENT beginner's pilates/cardio DVD,and an average(to above average) workout for anyone above that level.
Advanced users may want to pass on this one.
Also.. if you want a LOT of cardio, pass. There is only about 15 minutes worth on this 42 minute DVD. What's there IS effective, however.

*EDITED 04/20/2005(initial date of review was Sept 23, 2004)* to add that this is still my FAVOURITE pilates workout tape. I've had to stop using it temporarily, because I'm pregnant(not supposed to do exercise on your back when pregnant)... but I can't WAIT to use this to get rid of the post-pregnancy weight. I will say I saw a HUGE difference in my body after even 2 weeks of not using this tape. So, the DVD was *definitely* doing its job. Still VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Back in Shape with Mimi Solaire
Mimi Solaire, made an incredible video in the foreground of the beaches of Whitsunday Islands in Australia called "Back In Shape." This video is well instructed and easy to follow regardless at which level you would be on, from beginner to advanced. The workout was carefully constructed combining yoga techniques and chiropractic principles. I also didn't mention that Dr. Parsons, is also included in this video as well. Dr. Parsons has worked with Olympic athletes and also is on the team of several "Ultimate Fighters" where he uses his chiropractic charms.

"Back In Shape" is broken into two 15 minute workouts as well as combining both workouts into one ½ hour workout. Either way that you should choose to use this video, each session that was collaborated between Mimi Solaire and Dr. Ryan Parsons, will help you strengthen your abdominal muscles, improve your flexibility, and of course HELP you BUILD a STRONGER BACK!

To set out the highlights, I have listed them below:

• Uniquely combines the traditional strengthening exercises and relaxation techniques to maintain a healthy back as well as healing your back
• Safe and effective for beginner. The exercises are appropriate for men and women of all ages and levels of fitness in a step-by-step, easy to follow format
• Session 1: Begins with a series of three breathing exercises to reduce stress followed by hip opening exercises to help reduce sciatica and lower back pain and lengthen the hamstrings. Abdominal and back strengthening exercises develop a strong core to support the spine.
• Session 2: Focuses on the neck and shoulders to relieve tension and increase mobility. Exercises promote spinal flexibility.
• Filmed on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Hill Inlet on the Whitsunday Islands, Great Barrier Reef of Australia - providing a perfect and backdrop for a tranquil and peaceful environment.
• Set to music by Dean Evenson titled Ocean Dreams for the ultimate in relaxation.
• All exercises can be done in the convenience of your home - a comfortable surface to lie upon and a towel are all that is needed

This is beautifully produced Video that I hope everyone checks out at one point or another. It will cover all the aspects of back health which is what Mimi Solaire specializes in with her classes in Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Having recently injured my back I was anxious to learn about ways to keep my back healthy. I want to continue to lead an active adult life. I attended one of Mimi's sessions and was surprised that even after one session - my lower back pain was eased! My entire body felt relaxed and more limber! Not only are the stretches and toning exercises clearly demonstrated by Mimi but the music and background images (lovely beach) put you in the right frame of mind. The 2-15 minute sessions seem like no time at all. Give yourself the gift of time. Great job, Mimi! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Worth It
I'm writing this anonymously because I'm bi, technically I'm straight cause I love my wife and kids, but I dabble with the boys weeknights while out of town. I was in Houston last week for business and met this young boy at JR's who demanded we do this video to get rid of my office vibe. So we got naked and did the yoga video for an hour. We both got real hot and sweaty and it was actually a real workout that I very much needed - but all for better sex. By the middle I was so ready to bounce on my dancer boy. But he made wait. But after I cannot believe my 46 year old self kept up with this boy shot for shot ALL Night - I hate working out. But now I see why boys do this yoga.. It makes you feel like a king! The instructor is very easy to follow, even the hard stuff seemed possible. I felt the benefits. I can't recommend this video more for you and all your lovers!! Next port of call, yoga men only please! Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great session...more then just sex focused
This is a great yoga session (approx 50 min) to help you be more flexible and energetic. The instructor is innovative with poses and he explains well. You need to watch it once before doing it...he goes a bit fast. 3 guys are doing the poses with the instructor helping them.

Production value (sound quality/scene framing) is bit cheap...it feels like a one take session but it's not that important. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miss Paula Gets The Gold
What a tape this is! WOW! Paula Abdul really gets your heartrate going, and she is great company to sweat with.At first the dance moves DO seem a bit complex but they are easily mastered and really work your body out. What I like the most is that the warm-up is quick and effective, then Ms. Paula takes you right into the dancing. And how-these are some real funky moves! She takes it slow(and uses an inset box which I find useless), and after a few times you'll get it. If anyone expect to pop in an excerise tape and have to routine after only 5 minutes-you have got another thing coming. After the dance routine, Paula does some real great toning and stretching. The workout really burns in you legs and thighs(hey-it's that "good" burn), and the stretching feels fantastic for you back and legs.If you consider yourself a beginner try Paula's first tape "Get Up And Dance". Otherwise pick you this tape(or DVD!) and get to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cardio Dance...
I mastered "Get Up And Dance" and I loved it! I was looking for a new challenge and I found it with this DVD. I really like the warm up, it is not your basic stretching ect. It's fun and I almost feel like I am dancing in her video!

The problem that I have with this video is that I think you need to have more room than your average living room. Not to mention that Paula and her dancers can move so easily b/c they are on a tile floor and my living room carpet makes it harder to feel like you are doing the moves the right way.

All around I think that this video gives me a good workout and after I finish it I feel good, and I had fun. In fact the first few times I did it I was laughing at myslef b/c it was fun, not frustrating! I would say get "Get Up and Dance" first and if you like Paula's style then go for Cardio Dance.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't break down the steps
Paula is a great dancer, but she does not spend enough time breaking down the dance steps on her DVD. I eventually got frustrated and quit, so I never got a workout. I'm a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor and have been doing aerobics for years but this workout is not for the average exerciser. If you are into dance and pick up dance step very quickly this may be okay for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars I can't dance :)
I love this DVD workout because it doesn't feel like a workout at all. I am not a natural dancer and just trying to follow along keeps my mind so busy I don't notice when I start to sweat. The dance segment flies by. It's about 30 min but it feels more like 10. The second part consists of lower body work that I sometimes skip because I'd rather do other workouts.

The only down side is that this video takes a lot of space to do. Most of my videos only require 6 or 8 ft square while this one is better with at least 10 feet square. I have to modify parts of the choreography to avoid running into the furniture and walls. Also, if you have any chordination at all you will get the dance in the first 5 to 10 workouts. If you have no chordination (like me) it will be challenging at first and the video will keep you entertained for months :). Also the moves are not ones I'd wip out on the dance floor in public, but my rhytm and heart rate are getting better :). ... Read more

Tai Chi: 6 Forms, 6 Easy Lessons moves at a steady and fluid pace that is accessible to all levels of fitness. The instructor, Dr. Paul Lam, condenses this practice into six lessons, taught with meticulous explanation and repetition. The constant recap of each form aids in creating an approachable and easy-to-follow learning environment. Each routine is added piece by piece, which makes comprehending the overall continuity easy. Although effective in practice, video instruction may not be ideal in theory because Tai Chi lacks the same calming effects when performed in front of the television set. But this method offers such practical and basic instruction that all levels will soon be doing Tai Chi in the atmosphere of their choice. Each of the segments can be put together to form a cohesive and continuous workout or performed separately if participants want to zero in on specific forms. In addition to Tai Chi, the DVD includes a 3-in-1 Qi Gong workout. Qi (or vital life energy) Gong is based on traditional Chinese medicine and acts as a complementary addition to the overall experience. This regimen is ideal for anyone who desires both a mentally and physically focused workout. Participants with compromised backs, joints, and muscles will find a safe and nonaggravating practice that can alleviate tension and increase flexibility and balance. Tai Chi: 6 Forms, 6 Easy Lessons extends a warm invitation to old and young alike with this safe and educational format. --Olivia Voigts ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners!
This is an excellent video for beginners. Dr. Lam gives six essential lessons in Yang style Tai Chi. The moves are presented by Dr. Lam in front and back angles, by his assistant with Dr. Lam commenting on the form and in group form. The moves are repeated several times and are relatively easy to follow for a beginner.

I recommend you get the DVD version if possible. It is so much easier to fast forward or rewind than with a VHS tape. I don't think this video is suitable for intermediate or advanced students and it does not show the complete Yang form, however it is a great introduction for somebody with little or no Tai Chi experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tai Chi - 6 Forms, 6 Easy Lessons (1995)
I have reviewed 17 different Tai Chi tapes for beginners, this is by far the best. Dr. Lam presents the best form I have seen. Many other instructors abbreviate the form and movements, trying to make the learning experience easier for the beginner. I found this very confusing, especially when trying to join other groups. I just didn't know what correct form looked like. While my form is not perfect, everyday it improves with the Dr. Lam tapes. The training is provided through warm ups, class demonstration, individual demonstration, and Dr. Lam points out common mistakes made when learning a form. You are given views from the back, side and front. One after another. Learning Tai Chi can be frustrating. Dr. Lam has made it very easy for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating and Disappointing
I've been very excited to try Tai Chi for a while now, but found it frustrating and ultimately impossible to watch Dr. Lam's video. Four key reasons why this didn't work for me:

1) The pacing is all wrong. There is not enough time for me to emulate what the instructors are presenting before they move to something else. It also continually shifts from position to position, and I lose track of where I should be starting from and moving to.

2) There is no philosophy taught behind the movements. I wanted to know a bit about the reason for each of the movements and the philosophy of Tai Chi.

3) These are real-life people who have no stage training. Their talking is stilted and disjointed.

4) The production quality is low. The navigational elements are minimal, and the studio set looks like a junior-high production.

Ultimately, I'm now shopping for another DVD that I can actually watch and from which I can learn something.

5-0 out of 5 stars first exercise video i ever wanted to buy
i have no rhythm so i needed this slow, step by step process. i am only on the first lesson, but i can keep up - so i know i will go back tomorrow and try again.
the other videos all went too fast and wanted me to learn too many steps at once. i appreciate how they show the demonstators from the back so i will not have to worry about right and left. that way i can watch while i do the moves and not have too many distractions

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
I got this DVD for my husband, who has been interested in trying Tai Chi for a while. I decided to try it out first, and only managed to get through ten minutes of it. This video is painful, and I do not mean physically. The instruction is very poor, most of the movements are shots of the back of the instructors, and the set is honestly the worst I have ever seen. I agree with another reviewer that it looks like it was shot in a basement. This is the first time I have ever wished I could give a video 0 stars. Don't waste your time or money. ... Read more

I'm currently in my 19th week and have been using this video for about 6 weeks. I alternate this video with Rocki's Prenatal Yoga. This is the one I pick when I'm feeling less motivated and want a good stretch, an easy workout and some inspiration. I feel good afterwards, both in body and attitude. I'm VERY inspired by the different body types and love seeing the bare bellies on so many of the moms-to-be. I prefer Sue's personality and style to Rocki's, but I feel more "worked out" from Rocki's video.
I only wish this workout was available on DVD: I suffer from insomnia as part of my pregnancy symptoms and I have found the 2nd half or so to be exactly what I need (at 2am) to tune out my stress and relax my body. Also, I am a work at home mom with a toddler and sometimes 15 minutes is all the time I can make (the full workout is 45 minutes but I find I can break it into 3 segments when I need to). DVDs make it so easy to skip ahead and there's no need to rewind!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent prenatal yoga practice
Although I wouldn't call this the perfect prenatal yoga practice, it has some distinct strengths over other prenatal yoga videos I've seen. Visibly pregnant Sue Elkind leads a class of about a dozen women of in all stages of pregnancy through a well-chosen series of yoga poses. One woman demonstrates modifications for the less flexible, but most of the women do the program without modification, even in late pregnancy. The instructor talks through each pose, giving special attention to the balance and posture changes of pregnancy and emphasizing the connections between body and mind and mother and baby-to-be. This constant commentary makes the poses easy to follow even when not watching the screen, but may distract from the meditative quality of yoga practice.

Yoga Mama is most appropriate for women with no or limited yoga experience and no exercise constraints. It may also be helpful for intermediate level women in late stages of pregnancy, for tired days, or as the easy part of a rotation of practices. Advanced yoga students, however might find this video frustratingly basic and prefer to develop a personalized yoga practice using books (try Preparing for Birth With Yoga by Janet Balaskas). Women who need greater modification might want to try the Shiva Rea Prenatal Yoga program instead. Props: sticky mat (or carpet), folded blanket, folded towel (for wrist pain), chair (for modifications)

Personal Experience: I used prenatal yoga videos several times a week in addition to prenatal classes in a yoga studio once or twice a week. Although no video can equal a live class, this one captures some of the spirit of practicing yoga in a room full of pregnant women of all shapes and sizes. For home practice, I could choose between Yoga Mama and Shiva Rea's Prenatal Yoga video. Although Shiva Rea's video is longer and has better production values, I plunked this video in the VCR more than twice as often. I preferred the selection of poses in Yoga Mama (though I wish each pose lasted longer) and I preferred following Yoga Mama's visibly pregnant instructor (skinny Shiva Rea demonstrates first trimester poses with no hint of a belly). In addition, I found it much more motivating to see the whole class perform without modifications in contrast to the extreme modifications in Shiva Rea's program (the third trimester woman does most of the poses seated on a chair). To my surprise, I was able to comfortably and safely perform Yoga Mama without modification up until a few days before delivery. Practicing prenatal yoga helped minimize back pain, leg cramps, and other pregnancy discomforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite prenatal yoga workout
This is a great tape! I have been doing it for almost my entire pregnancy (I'm in my 8th month) and I love it. It isn't the longest workout (about 40 minutes) and it isn't the most challenging, it is just the most fun and gives you the best feeling. Sue Elkin is awesome and the tape is just great! Get it, you'll love it!

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible video, poor quality, poor instruction
Crunch is a neat brand, but they missed it with this prego video. The instruction is poor, the set is dull, and the workout is below average.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing and fun
I really like this video. It gives you a gentle workout, not too difficult, but still worthwhile. The instructor and all the other women in the video are pregant and they give you modifications on all the harder stuff. Overall, if you want a 1/2 hour - 45 minutes of gentle yoga with some stretching and a little strength work, this is a great tape for you. It is my favorite. ... Read more

This fast-moving, high-tech 2-DVD set features former intelligence agent Katrina Barillova leading three complete 45-minute workouts for fat-burning, strength, flexibility, speed, precision, and endurance. The exercises are tough and relentless, military style, with Max, Barillova's trainer, instructing by voiceover. (He cues for the performers, not the viewer, so ignore his left/right directions.) The Combo Workout is full-body muscle conditioning with various forms of pushups, moving lunges, weighted punches, weights, and abs. The Shadowboxing Workout consists of fast, intense cardio boxing drills plus stretching. (Watch the separate Basics instructional section first.) The Cardio Workout--"designed to be unattainable"--pushes you through fast-paced, high-energy boxing moves, jumping jacks, squats, and lunges, with stretching.

When you take a water break, watch an action sequence featuring sexy Barrillova clad in evening dress, nightie, or bathtub water, defeating villainous guys and telling them what they did wrong. Recommended for conditioned exercisers who want a tough, athletic workout. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, a nice change and good instruction
Oh, this one is a blast.I don't think it's as serious a workout as, for example, the Tae Bo that is my favorite, but it is so funny, fun to watch, and informative.I haven't done all of the episodes yet, but I love the "sexy" vignettes, and the way they go over form and teach you how to wrap your wrists for when you are actually going to make contact (with a heavy bag, for example). The stuff that one learns here could easily be expanded on one's own into other workouts.Highly recommended for anyone with a sense of humor. This can be hard to find but look around and you may find a better priced copy elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic workouts with great music, addictive fun.
This DVD set consists of three separate workouts depending on your mood (toning, shadowboxing and cardio), my favourite is the cardio which consists of moves based on punches, knees, kicks and squats. This workout gets your heart rate up and works up a very decent sweat. The music is the best I've found in a workout DVD, it's very cool and very addictive. The DVD can be a little cheesy a times i.e. "the missions", however I consider this set of workouts to be one of the best purchases, if not the best in my collection which consists of over 40 fitness DVD's.I would definately recommend this for anybody looking for exciting, challenging workouts that are visually appealing and present a very polished production.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST workout video I've ever bought.
As I've gotten older (and wiser) I've bought fewer workout videos because so many are just trash. (Who cares if some MTV kids can dance to a beat? That's no workout!)The Elite Forces DVD sethas done the one thing I never thought possible: It motivates me to workout because I don't dread the exercises or the instructor. With almost all the other workout videos I've used, I'll usually watch
