5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD Set
I have almost every jiu-jitsu instructional video set on the market and this is one of the best out of them all. Cesar is a great teacher, very technical and detail oriented, which makes all the difference. You will see an immediate improvment in your gi game guarented. I am a purple belt and ill tell u, what I learned from just his basic set alone is worth the price of this whole dvd set. His breakdown of how to behave and how to pass someones guard , with the gi on, is by far the best of any video set out there. Actually I thought this set was going to be like the videos of 10 years ago with basic self defense and all but it was so much more. The only bad thing I will say about this set is that he shows you a few moves that everyone already knows like standing headlock escape but still 90% of the stuff on here i didnt know and hadnt seen anywhere else. Well worth the 60 bucks especially if you are just starting in Jiu-Jitsu. You wont be dissapointed with this set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good movie about a little known war
This was a war that the Soviet Union waged on Finland in the winter of 1939 to gain access to a port. They got quite a shock when they were met by extremely stiff resistance. This movie chronicles a group of friends who go together to the front to fight. This is a tough bunch of guys, but they never lose their humanity, like most of the nazi soldiers did. The Soviet forces were lacking leadership due to the fact that Stalin had decimated their ranks in one of his insane paranoid murderous purges. This is the war that convinced Hitler that the Soviets would crumble when his army attacked them. The film does have a kind of washed out, grainy look, a little more than Saving Private Ryan did, but that didn't detract from the movie. It kind of emphasized the bleakness those men were facing. This movie has great battle action sequences, and I'll bet if there were environmentalists on the set, they'd have all had heart attacks because of the number of trees that were destroyed by tanks and artillary. This movie isn't hampered by contrived plots, like SPR, or unnecessary love triangles, like what is in Enemy at the Gates (which is a good movie in every other respect). The only quibble I have with this movie is that the subtitles were sometimes hard to read and the English wasn't always correct (but that was kind of comical).

3-0 out of 5 stars Great combat scenes but some boring parts
This is an okay movie. It tells the extremely dramatic story of Finnland's heroic resistance against the Soviet invasion of 1939 (this, by the way, is one of the things that the Russians would like you to forget about when they assert that they essentially won World War II on their own).

Anyway, the combat scenes are impressive for a film made in 1989. However, unless you speak Finnish, you're likely to get bored and start pressing the fast forward buttton when Talvisota gives you a series of verbose scenes at the beginning that last almost a half hour. There are several shorter (mercifully) interruptions punctuating the combat.

I've often wondered why Hollywood has never made a film about the brave fight that the Finns put up against the Russians. It would seem to me that the story would have the same appeal that "Braveheart" did. But then, I'm not a Hollywood producer.

The bottom line: If you can't rent it, I'd recommend buying it used (like I did). It simply isn't worth 45 dollars brand new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guy's Movie!
I give this film 5 stars not so much for its storyline or plot (which is virtually non-existant) but for its attempt to show a little known conflict. The combat scenes in this movie are intense. The waves of Soviet infantrymen throwing themselves upon the Mannerheim line gives the viewer a good idea what it must have been like for the Finns. The production value of this film is superb. Those are authentic Soviet T-26 light tanks, and early Yak Fighters. Again, don't look at this movie if you want to see a human interest story or standard plot. The intent of this work is docu-drama. The film accurately shows what the Finns did to resist the Soviet onslaught of 1939-40. There is not much character development here, pretty much all the Finns look like another, but what you see is a gritty determination of a small nation to defend itself against Stalin's tyranny. In the end of course the Finns had to make unfortunate concessions, but few modern wars show a more inspiring image of a small determined people fighting for their survival. This film is worth looking at for its marvalous combat scenes, equippment, and sheer grit. This is certainly a guys movie par excellenece. If you are inspired by it you should read the fine recent history of the conflcit entitled "A Frozen Hell"

5-0 out of 5 stars Original Film Was Oscar Worthy, DVD Is Cut In Half
I wanted badly to purchase this DVD. However, the DVD running time is only 125 minutes. The film, when released, ran 3 hours and 16 minutes!!! That translates to 196 minutes. I am not surprised that this DVD has collected some very negative reviews here. It is missing an hour of content!!! I am now off on a search for an uncut version. I still have a Los Angeles Times review of this film from December 8, 1989 (when it arrived as Finland's official Oscar submission) written by Kevin Thomas who marvels at "a classic war picture, at once intimate and epic, majestic and numbing." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I agree, excellent DVD!!
I have to agree with the others, this is an amazing DVD, with tons of information. I found it very easy to navigate and the material is easy to follow. I don't think you'd really need to buy anything else to learn this qigong, since the master explains everything so completely. Maybe after you learn this set you might get another book or video from the same author, into intermediate and advanced qigong training. Perfect for beginners!

So great to finally understand qigong thanks to this video!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good video
With some patience, I came to realize that this DVD is great. I do wish the formatting was faster and easier to get to, but the instruction is great. There is a lot to this subject, so it makes sense that you might want to purchase other material on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic DVD!!
This was my first Qigong video and it still by far the best I've found. This teacher leaves no questions about how or why to do any of the movements and explains everything with clarity in a straightforward manner. It is very much like a Yoga routine with a more internal focus.

The movements are simple and can be done sitting or standing, so it is excellent for all ages. Though it seems too simple to be effective, you'll find that after you practice along with this video, you have stretched and toned your entire body. Just doing this gentle exercise a few times a week for 20 minutes a day, I feel very strong and relaxed, I am remembering to breathe deeply and slowly all day and I have a lot of energy.

The poetry and music add a nice touch of class to the instruction and the teacher is an absolute pleasure to learn from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality video
This DVD is nicely produced with very high quality digital footage and sound. the instruction is clear and the movements are simple. There are two complete sets of exercises. the first on is sitting, and it is meant to be done right when you wake up to get your Qi energy circulating. I found this to be a surprisingly powerful set of exercises, and its taught me to be much more aware of the energy in my body. The standing set of exercises is more physical, and after only a few months I have found that it has made me very limber and much stronger. I have more muscle and less fat and I feel 'connected' to every cell in my body. I wake up with more energy than I ever have in my life.

The greatest part of this DVD is that after you've learned the movements, and seen them demonstrated, Dr. Yang explains each one and gives additional information about each movement that you can get much more out of your practice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
I write this in an effort to save you the money I wasted on this DVD. If you presently move any part of your body, in any way, there is nothing you will gain from this DVD.
I've done karate and yoga for over 20 years and hoped this would expand my learning, but found it a complete waste of time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD at an excellent price
I find this DVD to be an invaluable resource. It has more than four hours of various sections and details. It is perfect for beginners because it doesn't "dumb-down" the art of Tai Chi and gives an incredible overview. Tai Chi was originally a martial art and is now practiced mainly for health and relaxation. Without the martial essence the Spirit is lost, the postures have no meaning, and the mind loses its focus during practice.

This is the real thing, on a DVD with amazing navigation. Every single movement, posture and technique has its own chapter marker which makes it possible for anyone to study the form carefully and learn authentic Tai Chi quickly.

The depth of the content is impressive, while the presentation is simple and relaxing. I especially love the music during the program and the breathing instructions during the form..

There really is enough to practice on this DVD for years, rather than many of the Tai Chi videos out there where you see someone on the beach going through the motions, which you'll only ever watch once or twice. It is very difficult to find anyone who even knows the original 108 Posture Classical form, nevermind a teacher who performs it so beautifully and gives us so much insight.

1-0 out of 5 stars A reference video, not for the beginner
This is really more an encyclopedia article than a learning video. Note also this video comes from a fighting art viewpoint; no relieve-stress-on-the-beach scenes here. As reference it goes into MUCH detail, but for beginners this is too tedious a place to start. All the moves are shown from about the same angle; new learners usually need more help than that and will find this video frustrating in that respect. If you already know the form, are looking for more historical background or are coming from another martial art you will find a lot of data. So it all depends on your goals - to learn the form look elsewhere, this is way overpriced. But if you already know the form and are looking for details, you may find it interesting. Either way though its a bit pricey for what you get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Tai Chi Video Ever
The DVD edition of this Yang style Tai Chi video is so amazing. It is organized in a very simple and scholarly way, but the teaching inside is very deep and thorough.

It starts right at the very basics for beginners and gives you an excellent overview of the art of Tai Chi. The setting is a formal training studio. The video contains all the things you would learn in a Tai Chi Class from the basic stances and fundamental postures, to the entire form instructed and performed in complete detail by Dr. Yang.

There is an enhanced content button you can click on at any time to get the detailed analysis and instruction of every one of the movements. He even demonstrates some Chin Na grappling hidden in the postures of the form.

Not only is the entire thing subtitled, which is really helpful, but there are additional content subtitles, between the narration, in case you're interested in knowing more. It is over four hours long, including an excerpt of a Tai Chi Theory lecture by Dr. Yang, where he clearly explains the roots of Taiji Philosophy and Tai Chi as a martial art. This lecture alone makes the DVD worth getting.

There are also additional sections which explain Taiji Qigong (Chi Kung) internal energy training, and Taiji Fa Jin, which is the 'emission of internal power.'

The music is beautiful Classical Chinese and suits Master Yang nicely. I see this DVD as a very important document for transmitting the true essence of Taiji, both in its Classical form, and as a living, modern art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This is definitely a great DVD but it's not for beginners. The concepts he explains and the way the forms & other sequences are filmed will not do you much good unless you're already familiar with tai chi / kung fu. The picture quality leaves much to be desired and it's obvious that this was poorly remastered from a VHS tape. However, there is a wealth of information here and it's really worth the price. All of Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming's products are worth seeking out for the enthusiast or serious student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well done
I've seen a number of other videos offering instruction in various styles of martial arts and Tai Chi specifically. This one stands above them all for the quality of the production and the way the DVD is put together.

There is a great wealth of information on this DVD. There is a short lecture on theory, a number of loosening up and warming up exercises, Taiji Qigong exercises, and of course the full Yang style long form. Everything has chapter stops and you can skip to the section you want quickly and easily from the DVD menu.

The long form doesn't dwell excessively on any individual movement which allows you to practice along with it, but if you want more detail on how a movement is performed, you can hit 'Enter' on your DVD remote when the yin yang symbol is on the screen to get in depth instruction on the current movement being demonstrated. In that way it manages to offer the best of both worlds.

The only small criticism I have is the way the camera angle would switch sometimes during the course of a movement. It was done to provide the best view of the movement I'm sure, but the specific directions each movement travels in are not clear. A small nit to pick no doubt and probably of no concern to a beginner anyway. All in all this DVD stands well above any other Tai Chi instructional video I've seen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic Qigong Training!! Brilliant!
This video is excellent. It is over three hours of various exercises, unlike most of the other fluffy qigong videos out there. It teaches the theory of qigong in general, and briefly explains the difference betweenthe methods of Hard and Soft qigong.
Dr. Yang is in horse stance almost the entire time (how old is this guy?!). For the first month of training my legs were a sore distraction, but now they're used to the stance and I can focus on my deep breathing, which is the key of qigong: Getting more oxygen into your body, so your cells can more efficiently repair themselves, build muscle, clear toxins, etc.
The DVD helps also to focus the mind on the specific part of the body you are training, which has helped me immeasurably to use my mind to lead the energy in my body where I want it to be.
These movements generate a lot of Qi energy in the body, and Im learning to store it in my 'dan tian', or 'elixir field', which is about 2 inches below the navel, in your center of gravity. This is the main place in your body where your bioelectricity is stored and circulated from. After training these qigong for a few months I can feel an abundance of Qi here and can also circulate it through my body, into my limbs and back.
Dr. Yang's demonstrations of these movements is invaluable and inspiring, and the narration is very clear and simple. I expect to train with this DVD for several years, and will probably refer back to it repeatedly for the rest of my life!

5-0 out of 5 stars White Crane, not only a beautiful bird, but a beautiful DVD.
I myself have training in the arts of Tae Kwan Do and Karate. After I dedicated a few years to each school, I decided I enjoyed Chinese martial arts more so than Korean style. Every sect of martial art is unique and wonderful; however, I found the most enjoyment in Chinese. This in turn led a search to find a proper, traditional kung fu school. Well, such thing does not exist in Colorado, however, Dr. Yang's DVDs do!

Do not get me wrong, as White Crane techniques have been adapted into nearly every martial art, this DVD is priceless regardless of style (or lack there of.) This DVD is much more strenuous than some may believe too. Even in Soft Qigong, it is easy to break a sweat (if done properly.)

Dr. Yang's "Shaolin White Crane" book compliments this video. While the book is not required, it is highly recommended. It goes over the spiritual aspects, history, and breathing, while the video does not. In my opinion, the book may be more important than the physical training itself.

If you want to build a properly strong foundation for TRUE Shaolin Gong Fu (Kung Fu) studies as I am doing, this DVD is second to none. For you see, Dr. Yang is a White Crane (among other arts) student of two TRUE Shaolin masters (you will have to buy the book to see whom.)

This is a DVD I will be using ten - twenty - thirty years down the road with my White Crane studies. At YMAA.COM (Yang's Martial Arts Association) site, there are near countless other videos, books, compact discs, art, uniforms, etc. Included in these are White Crane Basic training 1 & 2 (2 tapes, or one DVD.) Moreover, Basic training 3 & 4 are due out in a month or two. Currently there are Kung Fu Fundamentals, Ti Chi, Chi Na, and much more, take time to visit www.ymaa.com, you will not be disappointed.

In addition, there is NO affiliation with YMAA and myself. I simply have much passion and respect for such true quality video training, A RARITY now a day.

I digress though; this DVD is broken down into Soft, Hard, and extras (ymaa video clips for others videos.) Within Soft and Hard are subdirectories that allow simple navigation to any point of study. I find the best feature is how there is nearly no talking, just soft Chinese music that escorts the current movement or exercise. Actual training is VERY easy to understand and follow, but to replicate the flowing movements of Dr. Yang, well that is up to hard work and time.

Yet that is what martial training is:

time, dedication, development, and enlightenment.

Peaceful Years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Marlene Dietrich
Its WORSE and BAD and Ugly that this Movie appears when I type in MARLENE DIETRICH - she would rotate in her graveyard here in Berlin when she would know this.

This is toooooo BAD!
I hate and dislike the Nazi-Guys. They were ill and stupid and brought a lot of MESS. It s crazy that in the world some people are playing this time in Costumes? Has the World nothing better to do?

Get better good books and documentary about this then the stupid movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings this time in history alive.
This video brings this period in history to life. You can actually imagine yourself there. Wonderful new material in color.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, valuable, but could be better
An interesting work with valuable footage, but too much "filler" material. The inclusion of footage of war criminals Roosevelt and Churchill is especially not within the parameters of "Third Reich in Color." The producers/editors could have cut some of the footage that was unnecessary/inappropriate, and not only not detract from the work, but improve it, even if shorter overall. Their inclusion of the special feature, "Reichshauptstadt Berlin," is a big plus, though.

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the buck
I bought this DVD based on the Amazon on-line reviews. I'm not certain if the reviewers are put ups or not, but when they say how great the quality is on this film I really wonder if they've watched the same program I did. The quality is awful!
Come on reviewers help out a little. If this is what you consider great quality, what do you consider bad? Not worth $29.95. More like $2.95. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good quality, new material
This DVD contains some interesting and new color material from the Nazi era. Initially I was skeptical in purchasing this, and assumed it would just trot out the same old Eva Braun home movies we've seen a million times. But wait... there is actually new film here, some of it recently discovered and airing here for the first time. Much of it was taken by soldiers at the front. There is some especially interesting footage taken during Barbarossa in the Russian campaign. There are also segments taken on the Western front in the 1940 campaign which have only recently been unearthed. Seeing these things in color makes everything appear more immediate and contemporary.

A small weakness is that there is not much actual color footage included of Hitler, Goebbels, Goering or the other Nazi henchman. They spend an inordinate time on a 1939 exhibition at Munich's Haus der Deutschen Kunst, where Hitler and the gang arrives and sits on a dais, watching a Wagernian-motive parade. There's also some nice scenes of a Bueckeburg farm fesitival in 1936, with Hitler walking up a hill with a limping Goebbels at his side. This has been seen before, however, most notably in the British production from 1972, "The World at War." Another weakness is the narration, which doesn't provide much actual information and doesn't tell the viewer what year the footage was made.

I recommend this film which will intrigue most people interested in WWII or the Third Reich. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good little German Movie
THE BRIDGE is a fine B&W WWII movie that is set in a village deep in Western Germany. All of the action occurs the last week of April, 1945.
This Movie is unique because of the time, location, and entirely German perspective of this tiny War story.
The eight kids who are assigned to guard, then defend, the bridge are 16 year olds. The climatic battle with the American Armored patrol is very well done (for the most part). What is interesting is that, because this is a German made film, the American soldiers and Sherman Tank gunners are all very bad shots (except for an American sniper with a scoped rifle). Where as in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (an American made film), the German Wafen SS troops and Tiger Tank gunners who attack the bridge at Ramelle are also very bad shots!
Still the action is riveting for a low budget, foreign film. Unfortunately, the viewer has to wait an hour for the final battle, because most of the picture is character development, and it consists largely of teenagers yelling at their parents, which can be very obnoxious to listen in German dialouge.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good German war film
One of the few post-war (1959) German films to depict actual combat against the Americans, "Die Bruecke" (The Bridge) was shot on location in Bavaria in black-and-white with a low budget and mostly local actors. Still, it tells its story well and avoids the blah-blah, angst-ridden, self-psychoanalysis that plagues much German cinema. Set in the last days of World War Two, the film tells the story of a group of teenage schoolmates drafted into the home guard and assigned to defend the bridge into their village against the approaching Americans. Their leaders are middle-aged WW1 veterans (who recall their own combat experiences with bitterness) and die-hard Nazi fanatics (who can't admit the war is already lost). In simple, realistic scenes the director portrays the futility, confusion, terror and waste of all war, and the hopeless anarchy that existed in 1945 Germany. A well-wrought little gem. Too bad it hasn't found a larger American audience. Compares favorably with "A Walk in the Sun," which is at least available on VHS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite
... The one thing that truly upset me was the seemingly obvious attempt to make the Americans look as stupid as possible. The uniforms and equipment they were clad in were truly insulting. There were enough Americans in Germany at the time the movie was made that authentic gear would have been as close as a call to any American base. I realize this was a German film and was not intended to make the Americans look good, but come on. If the intent was to make the Americans look foolish--it worked. An effort to show the boys fighting a well equipped American force would certainly would have honored the boys efforts more effectively than showing them fighting the bunch of oafs portrayed. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Perspective
I won't give a whole summary of the movie, but this movie is amazing.... you can see a completely different side of what we as Americans are used to. It shows sympathetic Amercian soldiers and the way a war and your pride can bring so much courage to a battle not meant for people this young. I don't think it really has anything else to say but PROPAGANDA, they wanted to fight becuase of what they saw and thier innocence is what held them together. Excellent film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Little to add except...
Others here have already detailed what a fine (anti)war film Die Bruecke is and why. I can only echo those sentiments: this is a gripping film that really makes you think about militarism and war and their costs. I did find one unfortunate problem with this particular release of the film: the subtitles are at times wrong, but more often they cut and simplify the dialogue and seemingly make little attempt to recreate its nuances. On the bright side, this film isn't heavily rooted in dialogue: the plot and images speak louder than words and get the messages across as clear as day. Still, it would be nice to see this film re-released with better subtitling. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A little piece of history...
This DVD is a great value & I am glad I made the purchase.

You don't find too many training videos at this quality and at such a resonable price. The video has no fluff. It is all quality training footage. Which to me is important when choosing training aids.

It is always great to see Hatsumi Sensei in action. His movement & martial skill is impressive as always. Everything he does appears effortless & his years of training shine through on this DVD.

The 2003 U.S. Tai Kai was particularly special because it was the last Tai Kai being done outside of Japan. So for me, it is like having a little piece of martial arts history.

I have to say, Great job! to those who put this DVD together to chronicle the event. For those of us that weren't able to be there in person we now have the next best thing.

Thanks again!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Martial Arts DVD I've Ever Seen
This terrific three-DVD set chronicles the last training event taught by ninja Grandmaster Hatsumi Masaaki outside Japan. For twenty-one years, Hatsumi-sensei has traveled around the world to teach the nine Japanese martial arts traditions he inherited from his teacher, Takamatsu Toshitsugu. In August, 2003, Hatsumi-sensei came to the U.S. for three days and amazed the participants with his knowledge and skill. Like it says in the product description, Hatsumi-sensei doesn't just show techniques; he gets to the essence and principles of the movement, offering unlimited freedom in dealing with any situation. His understanding of martial arts really comes through on this DVD, providing endless hours of viewing.

One attacker not enough? How about watching Hatsumi-sensei toss around multiple attackers half his age as if they weren't even there? Still not enough for you? Okay, lets add a variety of weapons such as shuriken (throwing stars), daisho (long and short swords), kyoketsu shoge (sickle and chain), and yari (spear), and watch as he effortlessly controls his opponents.

Most importantly, Hatsumi-sensei doesn't teach in a stiff and stern manner. His approachable and charismatic demeanor really comes through, and makes it not only fun to watch but much easier to understand what it is that he's teaching. I highly recommend this DVD set. Anyone interested in martial arts can benefit from the information, and those seeking the true essence of the warrior way will not find a better source! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BAD GIRLS!!!!
THIS DVD WILL BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY!!! THESE WOMEN ARE THE BEST FEMALE FIGHTERS I HAVE SEEN!!THERE IS NO DIFFRENCE BETWEEN THE WOMEN AND THE MEN BECAUSE THESE WOMEN FIGHT JUST HAS HARD IF NOT HARDER THAN THE MEN AND THAT SIMPLY BECAUSE HAS FEMALE FIGHTERS THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVE TO THE PUBLIC AND THE M.M.A. INDUSTRY..SO WHEN YOU SEE THEM FIGHT THEY ARE EXPLOSIVE!! THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE DVD IS THAT THE FIGHTS ARE FAST BUT STILL VERY GOOD..

5-0 out of 5 stars who says women can't fight
Hook N Shoot took a big gamble by having the first ever all women's MMA card in North American history. After watching this DVD, you will have to agree that the gamble paid off big time. 7 fights in all with only one going past the first round. People who say women MMA fighters have no skill will be forced to shut their mouths after watching this event. All 14 women show amazing heart and they show some pretty impressive skills levels too. The main event has Debi Purcell, my favorite female fighter, taking on Chris Van Fleet. An excellent event that would be a shame if missed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Chin Na instruction available!
I have been fortunate enough to learn the techniques from Dr. Yang himself in his seminars. He is a great teacher, a highly developed master, and a rare individual. If you've read any of his books you know how well organized, researched, and thorough his writing is. Well his videos are the same. These DVDs are as good as you can get. Nothing compares to one on one instruction, but these techniques are very clearly demonstated with close ups and alternate angles. A person can get a very good understanding by watching these and practicing along with a partner.
Some user complained about watching students "fumble" around with the techniques while Dr. Yang corrects them (mostly on the higher level DVDs). There is a good reason for this. These students are well practiced and still make mistakes. They are likely to be the same mistakes you will make. This method helps you recognize them as mistakes so you can refine your technique. Well worth the money! I recomend his seminars first and buy the DVD to review and practice between seminars.

Go to YMAA.COM to find seminars etc...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent series
Dr Yang is an excellent instructor, and this DVD series is the one of the best I have seen for teaching or self study of grappling methods. It is not a complete system of fighting, but it isn't meant to be. It is a very detailed introduction that is intended for those who have some experience in martial arts.

In my opinion, the price is too high. It is true that the cost is small compared to the cost of one-on-one training with a skilled instructor, but if like me you are buying this as well as training, it gets expensive quickly.

Even at this price they are well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chin Na In Depth-Courses 1-4 DVD
The service in receiving this DVD was excellent! Prompt and in excellent condition. The DVD is very clear and with very clear instruction. You are shown the actual move, slow motion, and clear instruction throughout each move.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Both the quality of the instruction by Dr. Yang and the quality of the production of this DVD are unsurpassed. There are so many joint locks on this DVD, I will be training them for years! (Especially if my partner keeps quitting on me)

The DVD has four entire VHS programs on it, an interactive catalog with video previews of a couple dozen other health and martial arts videos, sections about Yang's Martial Arts Association seminars and background, and a bio of Dr. Yang. The DVD layout is top-notch, with selections for every Chin Na technique.

The English subtitles are actually really helpful too, although you can always understand Dr. Yang's English instruction. He has a humble, funny and thorough teaching style which makes this video easy to watch over and over again. ... Read more

This presentation close to two hours in length is perfect for martial arts schools to play as a history lesson or for those who are interested in comparing the kata of Higa Seko to that of Yagi Meitoku or who want to compare Hidetaka Nishiyama to Gichin Funakoshi or maybe Nagamine’s Shorin Ryu to Hohan Soken’s Shorin Ryu.

You will see why Masters like Ueshiba, Nishiyama, Kano and Miyazato will go down in history as legends and National Treasures of Japan.

Plus you will see some of the most amazing feats of power ever, Tak Kubota smashing his shins with a sledge hammer, Seiji Uechi slicing a solid concrete slab in half with a single cut of a sword, MasOyama fighting a Bull,Hidetaka Nishiyama smashing boards in four different directions and so much more. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it
This film as a dvd is quite annoying because the entire film is one chapter, not allowing you to navigate to a particular scene. The sound quality is terrible, the music annoyingly repetitive and while the "rare" film footage has some interesting moments the quality is so bad that you can barely make out what is happening. Also there are much better and dynamic shots of some of these budo masters that this film (because of copyright?) didn't make use of. More of a slide show the narration is ridiculously limited, the titles amateuristic and so all in all nothing is missed by not having this poorly researched and trite exercise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD when it's not stopping and skipping
The music is beautiful and the footage is outstanding. It's just disappointing that it never plays straight through. All my other dvds play with no problems, so I'm not sure why this happens, but it's certainly a distraction and inconvience when the footage is so exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning much,,,
I would just like to say this Dvd is very instructional and informative. As a new practioner I found it to be very user friendly. I am impressed and glad that I made the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who really want to learn..... this is the one
This is an impressive DVD...if you are really interested in learning sword technique and kata this is the dvd for you. It may not have the "hollywood" make believe flambouancy that we see on the motion picture film screen, but it does have real technique for those who have the patience to learn. Any martial artist knows it takes patience, practice and repetition to become skillful. If you are looking for purely entertainment go to the movies if you want to learn swordsmanship buy this dvd.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This video is just boring. The picture is not to good but watchable. I hope this is the only video this guy ever makes. I do have to give it 2 stars just because it does show a lot of stuff. They maybe should explain more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mistaken Identity
As mentioned in the other reviews, the publishers of this volume simply (and I do mean simply) copied a videotape of medium to low resolution and authored a DVD with a single menu item - PLAY. The image quality is so bad in parts that it is difficult to discerne what's going on in the video, and the explanations about what the instructor is doing are sparse, if any are given at all.

Perhaps when the original video was mastered there wasn't much out there in the way of Japanese sword instruction. If this is still the case, then there is a good market for some quality instruction and creative authoring.

5-0 out of 5 stars The art of the samurai revealed to all
This dvd shows sword techniques and kata clearly and slowly that are traditional and effective. This is the real deal. When you practice the kata presented in this dvd your mind really does become one with the sword. It is wonderful that this type information is available to anyone with an interest to learn such an ancient art. ... Good DVD packaging with front cover of Akido master. No problem playing the DVD on both Apex and Mustek players. I bought this DVD as a historic document for my library, and not knowing the film quality. I am happy there is a lot of film footage of the master with his students (both indoor and outdoor classes), but the quality is very poor. Many scenes are filmed with way too much light (it may be film deterioation) so that if the students are wearing white, they blend in with the extreme brightness of the room. There is more contrast in bright light of the film when students are wearing black clothes, but not much. You see very little detail in the footage because lack of contrast washes out the figures. Do not buy this DVD to study the form of the master. Buy it if you want a rare historic document to add to your library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Wegener Rips
I had the joy of teaching Tom Wegener (star of the surf movie) back in the 1980s............ He is a wonderful surfer and one of the nicest people I have ever met.

I have never met anyone more stoked with surfing.

The movie is excellent and captures huge hurricane surf.

This film is much better than most of the surf flicks being produced now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun and a must for all surfers
This movie is a road trip through mexico with Tom Wegener, Josh Farberow, Marc Kavanagh, and Joel Tudor. These guys go from the Baja Peninsula to semi famous Puerto Escondido. Spending most of their time driving in their old Chevy Suburban, camping and surfing. Some of their adventures include a boat ride through the jungle, making hand pressed tortillas, and cooking lobsters on a wood burning adobe stove. I think that it is a fun movie and a great time for the whole family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Mexico Surf Trip movie
This is an enjoyable Surf movie about a few guys driving down to Puerto Escondido and surfing all along the way. Mostly LongBoard Surfing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mexican Surf Safari, Joel Tudor Style
"Siestas y Olas" is the second movie by filmmaker Dan Wozniak (aka DanO), who put together "Ten Toes Over" a couple of years earlier. "Ten Toes Over" was a surf movie in the classic sense, featuring great longboarding by Tom Wegener and Joel Tudor, corny humor, a narrative reminiscient of Bruce Brown's old movies, and a lot of California, Baja, and Mexico action. It was shown theatre-style along the Cali coast as well as the East Coast and Texas, and was released in 1996 on video.

DanO returned to familiar ground with "Siestas..." with the same good longboarding, corny (almost lame) humor, and a good mix of soulful guitar and authentic south-of-the-border music. At the time this was made, Wozniak was the only guy still touring around the country with a surf movie shot on film, part of the scene that we had lost with the advent of the surf video. Other filmmakers have since followed in his footsteps, notably such movies as "Imagine: Surfing as Sadhana."

The premise of the film is simple: a three-month winter surf trip into the heart of Mexico, starting in Baja and getting as far south as Puerto Escondido. The movie stars longboard sensations Josh Farberow and Tom Wegener, with guest appearances by Joel Tudor in Puerto and Marc Kavanagh, an Aussie that hooks up with them shortly before reaching Puerto. The movie starts off with a cool vibe, getting into the cultural details of their ride (a beater suburban from Montana, sans A/C, FM radio, or working power windows) and the various local towns. Baja is skimmed-over quickly, with a touch of footage of small Scorpion Bay, before the ferry hits the main island. Throughout, most of the surfing action is on longboards, with Josh occasionally trading in for a standard thruster on the hollower stuff, and Marc sticking to his shortboard for the duration.

The quality of the movie is a vast improvement over "Ten Toes Over" which was frequently overexposed or shaky. DanO uses only film, and puts together some good water shots on the smaller days, sticking to the beach when it gets big. And it does get big! After a lot of smallish stuff at right and left-hand point breaks, the movie winds up a third act with several days' worth of solidly overhead to double-overhead Puerto. Snapped boards galore on the biggest and thickest days, and a lot of mind-blowing barrels, especially by Joel, who makes a good case in this film for being one of the worlds best surfers on any board in any conditions. The film climaxes with some truly harrowing shots of Tom and Marc charging out-of-control cloudbreaks at Petacalco. After 90 minutes of mellow times, lobster, and cervezas, the final 10 minutes will pump you back up again. Legitimately 15'-20' Hawaiian-style mackers shoaling and reeling and pounding their victims all the way to the beach. DanO has a hard time getting many good shots, lacking a boat or cliff vantage point like Peahi, Mavericks, or Waimea, so I didn't see as much as I would have liked. What I saw was epic surf with only two guys out, somewhere in the heart of Mexico at the tail end of a long journey away from home.
