Description

This instructional DVD set is the original Renzo Gracie/Craig Kukuk series that changed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu forever. Originally selling for almost $400 dollars in the VHS version, we have digitally re-mastered this series for DVD. This 11 volume series deals with Sport Jiu-Jitsu and No Holds barred fighting and has hundreds of instructional techniques. Renzo Gracie and Craig Kukuk take you through each technique with clear, concise explanation that made this series a favorite for many learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-defense and hard core street fighting.

As an added bonus to the instructional material is some of the most brutal bare knuckle style fights from Brazil. These matches were long before the UFC and take place in gyms in Brazil and underground No Holds Barred events (many fights have no gloves). You will see Renzo Gracie himself in his early fights and many other Gracie’s crushing their opponents. Renzo and Craig teach tons of moves on this set and often stop in the teaching to show you a real fight were the technique they are teaching was done. This is a MUST have set for any grappler and fan of MMA. This set contains 11 volumes on 3 DVDS. Each DVD has a complete menu with chapter breaks for each technique.

Volume 2. Advanced Armlocks
Volume 3. Escape from the Bottom
Volume 4. Escape from the Headlock

This is a great DVD for anyone interested in gracie jiu-jitsu or fighting in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars great dvd set
this is a very good dvd set for anyone looking to learn jiu jitsu, .. they teach you in a way that you'll learn it easily. for the price, i highly reccomend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Great deal, Hours of instruction.
I completely disagree with the idea that the instruction on these DVDs is poor. The illustration and detail of technique is fine. Not high quality production, but you can learn the techniques just fine. For the price, and what you get, I would say this is an under-rated bargain. $60 for 11 tapes (put on DVD). Granted there is nothing overly complicated here. This set gives you a good over-view of the Gracie/BJJ system. This is the best bargain I've seen on BJJ instructional tapes/DVDs. A must have.
The NHB fights from Brazil are an added bonus. If you pass this deal up, you are a sucker, you won't find this level of instruction for this price anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good set!
This is great deal! I purchased this set years ago for much more money. To have it on DVD is a nice touch because you can jump to any technique you want. Renzo Gracie is great. For the money, this is the best deal on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructional videos you will ever find.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Boxing Package! A++

I recently received the Christopher Getz Ultimate Boxing 8 DVD Boxed Set and on first pass I am impressed. There is so much information it took me over a week just to view them all. I have over 40 pages of notes after watching just half of them. Getz is a very skilled and knowledgeable teacher who is never boring as he breaks down all the techniques and strategies in a way you can easily learn them. The lessons are very well structured and all DVDs compliment the others. Everything is covered from equipment to basic and advanced techniques so I must say this series offers a complete package on Boxing which is what I have been searching for and finally found with this set. The best thing is besides the physical routines, the lessons open your eyes as to how sophisticated and technical the sport of boxing really is. Boxing is a game of chess and to succeed Coach Getz teaches you to be a smart fighter as well as a fit fighter. The series is a total package with hundreds of techniques, tips and strategies that can make anyone who studies them a complete fighter. A++ Very good investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insights
This DVD provides great insights into the Vatican and the role of the pope. This video tells a great story with pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO THE HOLY SEE
Gain behind-the scenes access to the See of Peter in National Geographic's INSIDE THE VATICAN. This documentary provides an unprecedented view of the inner workings of the Church, such as the election of a new Pope, enlistment of Swiss Guards, the ordination of Archbishops, the restoration of priceless works of art, and a history of the Papacy and its critical role in the development of Western civilization.

The Papacy has its beginnings with St. Peter, Prince of the Apostles, and leader of the formative Church. He is the first Pope, who ministered the flock in Rome at the time of Nero, and was martyred at Vatican Field in a circus in the outskirts of the city. The disciples recovered his body and buried it in the same field, which became a center of pilgrimage in the ensuing centuries. The exact spot of his crucifixion was preserved by tradition, and is now marked by an altar. Constantine the Great built a basilica at the site of his tomb, which has been replaced with the magnificent renaissance structure of today.
One can see for the first time the original tomb of Saint Peter, which had been lost for centuries and has been rediscovered only a few decades ago, right under the main altar of today's basilica.

Of particular interest are the priceless documents from the last two millennia in the Vatican's Secret Archives. One can see letters from Michelangelo to Pope Julius II, the request of Henry VIII for the annulment of his marriage (this was denied, and led to the formation of the Anglican Church), and even a demand from the Mongol Emperor that the Pope pay homage to him! (Of course, denied.)

Great attention is given into a "normal" day in the Vatican: the restoration of priceless tapestries by Raphael; the cleaning of Bernini's colossal baldachino; meetings of international figures with the Vicar of Christ. In addition, one can see the blessed ministry of Pope John Paul II, a man of great compassion. Particularly moving is footage of his visit to a leper colony in Korea: the Holy Father embraces and kisses these poor souls, not shying from their diseased flesh, but rather sharing with them the love of Christ.

Truly the Gates of Hell have not endured against Christ's Church. The successors of Peter have served the Church, and will continue doing so, throughout the ages. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for teaching about the Vatican and Papacy
Every teacher of the Catholic faith to young adults and adults should incorporate this DVD into their classes. It is so unusual to see the Catholic faith presented without an agenda -- and this succeeds. Everything is clearly explained and given a historical context. I was impressed with the archival newsreel footage incorporated into the explanation of the papal elections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
I found this dvd very entertaining and informative. It is a fascinating look into the operations of the most visited place in the world. The beauty and grandeur of the place especially the priceless paintings and artifacts have made the Vatican the most valuable wealth of historical information available. The dvd is great! National Geographic has done a great presentation of the Vatican and great to watch especially if you have never been there. This dvd is a great addition to any dvd collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well researched!
This video is an excellent video to show students, young adults as well as adults who want to know more about their faith and how did the Vatican came to be. I think it is also encourage anyone who is interested or curious about the Cathoilc faith to take a preview of the video. The video decribes how an ordination happens at Saint Peters, what actually goes on during an ordination. The video also decribed a Blessed and is story and how one day, he could become a Saint by the Pope. Finally, once a Pope dies, a new Pope must be elected, the video will cover that as well. The pictures of the Vatican are just awesome. I've been to Rome before, and these pictures just bring back memories. Also, I forgot to mention, the Swiss Guards. The video goes into how one becomes a guard for the Pope and there uniform. You must buy it or at least rent it if you can. The Pope is seen in several frames thoughout the video. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great lineup, sterile handling
Carlos Saura has cornered the market for flamenco movies today, from his 'Carmen' and 'Bodas de Sangre'. The long career has given him access to Spain's top artists working today. Unfortunately he has not seen fit to change his doggedly austere style, throwing artists into a stark empty room hoping to induce a more somber, and presumably purer, more dignified and more respectable Art.

This may be good politics, but makes for bad art. Like it or not, the soul of flamenco cannot be torn from the Andalucian sun and earth and still live. Like Argentine tango and jazz, it is at its most vibrant and purposeful when it's at home among its people.

A much better intro to flamenco, which showcases this living link, would be "Duende y Misterio del Flamenco", "Los Tarantos" by legend Carmen Amaya, or the many Spanish TV documentaries like "Caminos Flamencos" or "AƱos de Flamenco" (with many of the same artists), available from Catalina's (catalinas@aol.com)

5-0 out of 5 stars All the power, passion and artistry of contemporary flamenco
This is THE flamenco film. Carlos Saura, famous for his work with the great Antonio Gades ("Blood Wedding," "Carmen" and "El Amor Brujo") and for his portrait of Andalusian folklore in "Sevillanas," creates one of the best flamenco films ever made.

The focus in this work is on the performers and their performances. Sets are minimal and there is no "story" except that generated by the lyrics of the flamenco songs themselves. The director is careful to capture not only the larger aspects of the performances but also to zero in on the emotional engagement of the performers with their art . Flamenco is as much about the performer's struggles with the art and the emotions that underpin it as it is about a stage presentation. This is an intimate film despite the fact that it was shot in a train station. The sets, lighting and camera work continually direct your focus to that intimate space created by the performers.

The conceit of the film is a journey not only through flamenco's different styles as embodied by some of the art's greatest contemporary performers, but also a journey into the night. Not only is the night evoked through lighting effects, but the deep inner recesses of the soul are suggested as well, that inner wellspring from which flamenco itself arises.

This is the most profound exploration of flamenco ever captured on film. To understand flamenco, there is no better place to start than with Carlos Saura's masterpiece, "Flamenco."

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought...
I have listened to flamenco music all my life..I was born in Spain, and I'm telling you that this tape is not the true flamenco you would find on the streets of sevilla, or anywhere else in the south. ALso did not have enough dancing, which is the main atraction of the flamenco music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Duende on film
Those not in the know tend to think of Flamenco in terms of women with fans and flying skirts and men in boots and macho attitudes. Well, yeah, but there's more, much more. This movie, filmed in a converted Spanish railway station, presents the full range of the Gitano's art, from traditional to modern, individual to group, expressing all the pain and joy of a true, very serious artform. A delight.

3-0 out of 5 stars not enough dance
I am relatively new to flamenco and do not understand spanish. I like flamenco for the passion in the dance. I do not understand the music though, so my review might be that of a novice. I cannot even recognize the artists. I expected more dance in the video, though there are some very good pieces. I wanted to see more of the performers dancing like the world did not matter to them and the sound of the shoes was all the sound in the world, and the expressions in their faces. I am disappointed considering the price i paid for this. I wish I knew where to look for heart stopping flamenco dance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great toning workouts! Fun & Easy!
I love this dvd! I've tried many other workout videos, and this one is my favorite. It gives you a better workout in just 10 minutes & is fun to do. It contains 9 different toning workout segments, each are 10 minutes for different body parts (abs, arms, legs, buns). You get to pick which segments you want to do to customize your workout, whether you want to do 10 minutes, 20 or 30. In just 10 minutes you get a great workout & can really feel it.

It's fun because you can always do a different combination so it doesn't get boring. And each of the 9 segments are not your typical exercises. For example, if you're tired of doing ordinary crunches, the ab segments have so many different crunch variations as well as other great ab exercises.

The exercises are easy to do. The instructors explain the routines, keep you motivated & are fun to workout with.

The exercises are designed to give you maximum results in minimum time. It's great for people who don't have a lot of time for exercise - who can't spare 10 minutes?

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Find!!
I bought this DVD a few months ago based on the reviews I read here at the Amazon site - all saying what a great toning/spot exercise DVD this was. Well, I'm happy to say the reviewers were right!

Now, if you are looking for an overall body workout that includes cardio, this isn't the DVD for you. But, if you are like me and use other tapes or DVD's for the cardio aspect of your workout but also want to get in some toning and spot work after the fact, buy this DVD! The wonderful thing about it is that you are able to choose between 9 different workout segments, program from one to three segments at a time and mix and match them daily so that no two workout days are alike. I really love this option because there are days where I've already worked my buns and legs to death but haven't done much in the way of abs and arms. No problem - I just put in this DVD and choose one of the three ab 10 minute ab workouts and the 10 minute arm/upper body workout and the problem is solved. Also, the nice thing about each of the 9 segments is that there's a little countdown clock in the lower corner of your TV screen that lets you know where you are at in the segment and how much longer you have to push yourself before you're done. I like this because some days I just want to be done with my workout and that little clock works as a psychological motivator to tell me "it's almost over... only 3 minutes to go..."

The instructors on this DVD are really good as well - so much so that I've become a fan of Minna Lessig and have bought both her Balanced Blend workout and her Emergency Workout and haven't been disappointed with either and highly recommend them both as well. The only additional item you'll need for this DVD is a set of hand weights for the arm and arm/leg segment and then... get ready for a great spot/toning workout! You won't be disappointed!!

1-0 out of 5 stars TOO CHEESY
Mina Lessig is an nnoying Denise Austin type. She tries soooooo hard at being cute or sexy that she BUGS ME immensly. Nancy Popp is good, but the workouts don't do it for me, they are repetitive and cumbersome. i'd recommend anything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets to the point
Pluses: Tough enough to challenge a solid intermediate; all the segments are different; Minna Lessig; the DVD provides the ability to set up any combination of up to 3 out of the 9 10-minute segments; generally useful editorial tips during the exercises from the 3 leads.
Minuses: 3 buns segments and only 1.5 for each of arms and legs (2/2/2 would have been preferable); occasional prattle between the 3 leads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I got this less than a week ago and tried all the programs straight through, as well as using the "blender" feature. Wish there was one of these for aerobics! I loved Nancy Popp in the Steel 2000 series and she's just as good here. Some of the segments are easier than others so there's a perfect workout for every day here! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely Done
Nina is certainly one of the most attractive of all the adult star, a truly awesome bod. Comes across in this video as quite intelligent and articulate. I love her wholesome attitude about sex and the way she conveys her total enjoyment whenever she is engaging in sex. An attitude also obvious with Barbara Dare. She obviously knows what she is doing as she discusses and performs fellatio. The only shortcoming is that she omits any reference to the guy's climax and the ejaculation that follows. For a guy, the most erotic part of fellatio, for the gal, especially a gal wanting to learn from the video, the part of fellatio that can be the most difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nina does put her mouth where her words are
Nina once again has produced a winner. Of course it helps having a well endowed subject on which to demonstrate. The lecture/discussion is very informative but the demonstrations of mouth on _____ are explicit and well done. Thank you Nina I thank you from the bottom of my heart...I mean entire length of my manhood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This nine-part documentary is not only a history of the Jews, it's a history of the western world! Hundreds of thousands of dollars were probably spent in the production of this series. Abba Eban takes the viewer all over the world to examine one of the world's most gifted and intriguing people - the Jews. These tapes will not put you to sleep. The music and images allows the viewer to relive Jewish history. And consequently, come to understand the world we live in today much better. I know the tapes are pricey, but own this documentary if you ever have the chance. You'll never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heritage Civilization & the Jews by Abba Eban
I thought the documentry was thought provoking, and set a good example of what documentries should convey -- "the facts" -- minus "too much" so-called "perspective". I took an amature film-making class years ago, and as much as I like classic films; it is always super to view "factual" documentries (minus the "revisionist" approach to manipulating the facts!) 5-0 out of 5 stars Heritage - Civilization and the Jews DVD
WOW! This is an incredible set to have. The DVD is a reprint from a PBS special in 1984 (Peabody winner, at that). Abba Eban is an incredible, captivating speaker. My only problem is that there is so much information, I can only watch about two hours at a time. This is a must have whether you are Jewish or not. The series pulls together world history unlike any class I took in college. The addition of the DVD-Rom with tons of maps, historical documents, and video clips is awesome. It has answered most of the questions I had, and let me view a moving graphical history by sliding the scroll bar. Super buy for a history buff!

5-0 out of 5 stars superb! Teaches us that Jews and christians are brothers
and sisters. One realizes how alike we are andwonder how we could have persecuted our Jewish brothers for the past 2000 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-issue of a great documentary from the 1980s
This DVD is a re-issue of a 9-hour mini-series that first aired in the 1980s, and was recently (Nov-Dec. 2001) aired again on PBS. Each segment is 1 hour long, making it a useful tool in history classes covering many different periods. Since the "history of civilization" textbooks rarely mention what the Jews were doing in the 1900-year period between the rise of Christianity and the Nazi Holocaust, this series plays an important role in helping to make the curriculum more inclusive. Plus, The DVD version has a lot of additional resource materials not in the original PBS series.

Regarding classroom appropriateness in public schools, this is a documentary, not a "religion" series. Yes, the series does talk about religion in some places, but it's called "Civilization and the Jews" for a reason. To be Jewish is not just a "religion," it is also a culture, with its own art, music, literature, etc. The approach is a mix of history, theology, archaeology, art, architecture, etc. that is intended to inform, not preach. The series clearly shows how Jews have contributed to the various civilizations where they lived, and how, in turn, the Jews benefitted from interaction with many of the different cultures where the Jewish communities were located. Yes, it also covers the pesecutions of the Jews, but it's well-balanced with positive experiences and events. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Rome: Power & Glory is a six-volume comprehensive introduction to the rise, rule, and fall of the Roman Empire. The series covers the political, military, and social history of the empire from its miraculous engineering feats to the exorbitant taxation that contributed to its downfall. Learn about ancient sporting events and Roman opinions on sex, fashions, slavery, and taxes. The series covers many of Rome's most famous, and in many cases infamous, figures, including Julius Caesar, Augustus, Nero, and Caligula. One of the series' main strengths is its coverage of all levels of Roman society, depicting the diverse strata of Roman civilization in all respects: economic, religious, geographic, and such. While providing a good general overview, Rome does not have time to make a detailed study of any one topic. The other disadvantage is a reliance on old gladiator movie footage that detracts from the seriousness of the topic. All in all, this is an excellent visual introduction to the history of the Roman Empire. --Tara Chace ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Best for the Beginner
This is not a DVD series for someone already familiar with Roman history. It is, however, a decent introduction for a beginner.

As other reviewers have said, the series is laid out in six independent chapters. Although the layout is roughly chronological, it does jump forward and loop back at times, which can lead to confusion if watching the entire series at one sitting (wait, didn't we already cover Commodus? Did I start the wrong chapter?). This repetition occurs because the chapters were meant to be shown one at a time, and are thematic, rather than chronological. For example, one chapter might cover the legions, and another the growth of Empire, and both chapters might discuss the second Punic War and the fall of Carthage.

The narration is fair. I was a bit off-put at first by the American voice (though American myself, I always expect a British narrator in this sort of film) but quickly grew accustomed to it. Many of the images are of very old (look to the the 1920's or 1930's) films about Rome, with modern images added and similarly made to look dated. It's a decent effect. The more modern images, such as those of a man throwing hay into a wagon with his pitchfork, are repeatedly used throughout the film -- any time the series discusses farming, we see this same film clip.

The experts are...fair. I found it disheartening to hear one compare Rome's gladiators to Mike Tyson in the first few minutes of series -- the comparison, while true, felt trite and overly focused on pop culture. It will date the series in a few years when people say, 'Mike Who?'.

All-in-all, a reasonable effort.

1-0 out of 5 stars Order the Pasta! This Caesar Salad is not Roman
I took a chance ordering my first DVD series about the power and glory of Rome. I felt it would be an excellent idea for my family to gain a complete perspective about the Roman Empire. I understood it was not going to have the same quality of "The Passion" or the blood and hoopla of "Braveheart," however, I was expecting to get an excellent historical perspective about the splendor and magnificence of Rome, the greatest empire of the World.

Instead, my family viewed a hodgepodge of ruins, black and white blurred segments, 'candy-coated' imagery to soften the senses (the hysteria and shock could not be absorbed as to how Rome really functioned on a daily basis) and colossal amounts of repetitive film clips that became so nauseating that the narrative, in audio, intellectually overwhelmed the content presented on video.

There was some beautiful footage of the countryside and fleeting glimpses of grandeur sprinkled throughout the series, but the splicing and cuts shut down any momentum. Regrettably, even the documentary got repetitive. Several comments were contradictory. Important aspects of Roman society were utterly dismissed, ignored or avoided. Many statements were biased, misrepresented and utterly false!

For example, the narrative claims that the Barbarians and other cultures were more sadistic and treacherous than the Romans. Let us use some common sense! On the admission of the narrators, the Romans were embedding for centuries the fine art of sadism and treachery...while the video is showing repetitive scenes of earlier periods from Disc 1, 2 3 and 4.

I was not very comfortable with the comparisons made between America and Rome. In fact, it was confusing without deeper analysis. Some incredible comparisons were made, but like many comments given on other subjects on the DVD, they needed to be backed up with evidence, proof and further discussion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Rome
I thought it would be worse due to the importance given to fighting and gladiators, but it has a lot of information and is quite entertaining. Great for students. However, I was aiming at something more intellectual.

1-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and Simply Wrong
If this were a book rather than a video then I would say there is a mistake on almost every page. The author's understanding of what he/she writes about is superficial in many areas, and often what is said is simply wrong. If you already have a good foundation in the history of Rome then this might be a two star video since parts of it may be entertaining or otherwise interesting. However, this is a very misleading way to start an understanding of Roman history. The author seems either to be incompetent, or perhaps is consciously unconcerned with the facts in order to twist Roman history to fit into some political statement the author wants to make. Either way this is not a very insightful, accurate work.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource on understanding the Roman world
I would give this 4.5 stars if I could. The content on this DVD is arranged topically instead of chronologically. Because of this, you can watch each episode independently of the others instead of all in a row like I did. :-)

Some of the content is repeated across episodes as they recap an earlier one (this originally aired on TLC) so even though it is 5 hours total, it is probably closer to 4 hours of unique content.

The narrator is generally good in giving content and the expert sound bites are just long enough, though it would be nice to hear more.

There are very few re-enactments in this series. They have a stock set of actions they re-use in different contexts.

I would definitely recommend this for people to watch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING
I am a 21 yr old female and I have always had a large stomach. I have tried many ab exercises and DVD's but this one is DEFINITELY the best. Most ab exercises are just too easy for me, but this DVD really showed me some new exercises that were very CHALLENGING. This DVD has three different workouts, or "phases" as they are called. The first one is a little challenging but the second one killed me. YOU will feel the burn on this and you will SEE RESULTS! All you need is a stability ball and for some of the exercises you need to lean your feet against a wall. Otherwise, no other equipment is necessary. AN EXCELLENT PURCHASE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compulsory
If you want to work your abs on a stability ball this dvd is a must. And, after working out with this dvd I'm convinced that working abs on the ball is the only logical and effective solution for the mid-section (this after years of performing crunches and other floor exercises with moderate effect). It contains three 20 minutes workouts for three different levels of difficulty. I was familar with some of the moves contained in this dvd because I had already purchased "Swiss Ball Basics" by Adam Ford - also highly recommended. There is plenty to challenge your core muscles here and many of the moves, even in Level 1, require great concentration and may have to be worked up to. You will definately know the meaning of a recovery day after doing this one and your abs, expecially the obliques, will be hurting (in the good way). I honestly believe that if you did one of the three routines once or twice a week you can't fail but to see great results. I already have and I wasn't out of shape to begin with. Adam Ford has a great mid-section and he's an inspiration. I would highly recommend this dvd - no sloppy production values here. I hope Adam Ford intends to make more programs. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars No nonsense results!
Finally! a fitness dvd that is well presented, thorough, and shows simply and effectively just how to use a Swiss Ball to it's full potential!

Before I found this dvd, I'd been looking for one in the UK for months, but they all seemed to be aimed specifically at women, and were mainly intent on just reducing fat - none of them actually showed you how to use the Swiss Ball to it's full advantage.

If, like myself, you have a swiss ball at home and up to now have only used it as a piece of novelty furniture, then this is the dvd you need to finally make some real use of it!

The presenter takes you though the correct use of the ball and guides you though a series of exercises which look innocent enough until your abs start to scream at you the next day (a sure sign that it's doing the job!). Just watching the presenter at work is inspiration enough as you can see every muscle the exercise is intended to train flex as as each exercise is perfomed. It sounds daft I know, but for me, this alone is an enormous help as you can see straight away whether or not your doing the exercise properly by comparing which of your muscles are working against those that are flexing on screen!

Music and other distractions are kept to a minimum, and at every stage you're guided along with an informative but unobtrusive commentary. You can even hear the presenter breathing, which soon makes you realise when your own breathing is out of whack (something I'm always getting wrong when exercising!)

I'm a 34 yr old guy who's used gyms and other abs equipment in the past, but I've NEVER found a training programme that's been as effective as this! I've been using it now for a few months on and off, and it soon becomes second nature. It may take me some time to get the sort of abs the presenter has, but at least now I'm doing the RIGHT exercises, the RIGHT way help me achieve this! ... Read more

In the early 1970s, a group of young surfers from a tough neighborhood south of Santa Monica took up skateboards and offhandedly changed the world. At least it appears so after watching Dogtown and Z-Boys, a documentary about how twelve "Z-Boys" (including one girl) resuscitated a dead sport and created a lifestyle that spread infectiously to become a worldwide counterculture phenomenon, namely high-flying "vert" (i.e. vertical) skateboarding and punk rock abandon. Director Stacy Peralta, one of the original Z-Boys, and Craig Steyck, the photographer whose publicity first made them famous, would have you believe that with empty pools as their springboard, the clan single-handedly carved a niche that grew into what is now referred to as "extreme sports" (snowboarding seems particularly implicated). Degrees of accuracy aside, the hoard of original footage Peralta and Steyck have access to makes for an engaging portrait of "accidental revolutionaries" whose mythology as expressed by themselves (all but one of the original crew give extensive interviews) and those they influenced (including Henry Rollins, Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, and Sean Penn, who narrates) is far more entertaining than any evenhanded version could ever hope to be. --Fionn Meade ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good but Inaccurate
As I amazed my 11 year old son and his friends (and myself) by performing 3 consecutive 360's (I'm 50) they mentioned seeing this trick on 'Dogtown.....' I immediately went down to rent it. I really enjoyed it but I believe they portrayed themselves incorrectly as being the only pioneers of 'empty pool skating'. Me and my friends were doing this on our expensive $10.00 Makaha skateboards in La Habra, California in the mid 60's!!! When we weren't able to do that we were flying down West Road in La Habra Heights with dogs chasing us doing the same hairpin turns as these guys supposedly pioneered 10 years later?

4-0 out of 5 stars Once upon a time...
If you grew up in the 70s like me and couldn't wait until the new Sears catalog came out with the latest skateboard (remember the exposed ball bearing wheels)and spent hours at the local mini-mart combing through the latest Skateboarder magazine that you couldn't afford, this movie will instantly transport you back to those days. I hadn't thought about Stacey Peralta, Jay Adams, Tony Alba, Steve Olson, etc for the last 20 years and whammo I watched this flick and wanted to dig through my parents garage, wipe off the old Alva board, tighten the Gullwings, and find the closest empty pool. One of the better "birth of a era" flicks I've ever seen. I know I'm biased but just watching the fluidity of these kids exploring the limits of gravity at the DogBowl and listening to the choice soundtrack Peralta pieced together is a true pleasure. One of my favorite scenes: Jay Adams follows the old stiff Bruce Logan's et al at the Del Mar Nationals and blows the doors off the place with a no-holds-barred performance which is so aggressive he gets thrown off the board a couple times. Gotta love Jay! Enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars The rebirth of the cool
This movie is alot of fun.It has the same spirit and sense of invention as the great surfing movies. In fact, it comes as little surprise that a brat pack of surfboys were the ones to turn skateboarding on its ears in the 70's, by introducing extreme maneuvers that left the judges agape when they reintroduced national competitions in the late 70's.Here you get the unvarnished impressions of the motherf*#!ers of invention themselves, exploiting every school yard and swimming pool in their immediate vicinity to give skateboarding a whole new look and feel.

Stacy Peralta captures the energy of the Z-Boys and how they rise to fame and in some cases fortune by turning this kids' sports into one of the great extreme sports of the 90's.Like "Riding Giants," Peralta has fun piecing together the history and breakthroughs of the sport with a lot of personal interviews with the original Z-Boys.It pretty much ignores everything else that was going on in skateboarding at the time, but no matter, these guys were the top dogs, launching onto the scene in Skateboarding magazine, thanks to the gonzo style approach of Craig Steyck.Style was everything and these guys and lone gal had it to spare. My only qualm is with the dull voice over of Sean Penn who sounds like a wet blanket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent.
My boyfriend skated with some of these guys in the early 80's in Los Angeles. I wanted to understand what he was talking about, so I rented the DVD from Netflix the other day. GREAT film. A very interesting piece of history and skateboarding culture.

The Fog of War, the movie that finally won Errol Morris the best documentary Oscar, is a spellbinder. Morris interviews Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and finds a uniquely unsettling viewpoint on much of 20th-century American history. Employing a ton of archival material, including LBJ's fascinating taped conversations from the Oval Office, Morris probes the reasons behind the U.S. commitment to the Vietnam War--and finds a depressingly inconsistent policy. McNamara himself emerges as--well, not exactly apologetic, but clearly haunted by the what-ifs of Vietnam. He also mulls the bombing of Japan in World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis, raising more questions than he answers. The Fog of War has the usual inexorable Morris momentum, aided by an uneasy Philip Glass score. This movie provides a glimpse inside government. It also encourages skepticism about same. --Robert Horton ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant insights
Errol Morris's stunning documentary is about one of the 20th century's most significant players: Robert McNamara, who reprises the highlights of his life and professional career. The movie covers a lot of ground, including McNamara's stint as a Ford Motor Co. executive, his participation as a war planner in World War II, and his crucial involvement as secretary of defense under President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and under Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson during the Vietnam War. There are some stunning revelations, including his role in the firebombing of Japan, as well as the nuclear face-off between the United States and Cuba. This is another brilliant coup for Morris, the inspired documentarian who has made a career out of conversations with the most fascinating subjects. He tells a story that knocks you right off your feet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. McNamara reveals all...In His Own Words!
While network & cable news television reveal(s) inside political information to its' viewers, they only tell a fraction of the story, and only reveal what the viewer wants to hear at that. Docudramas/biopics, on the other hand, tell the complete & entire story as is, all without leading the onlooker astray in the process. Former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara's account is no exception, of which, during the course of "The Fog of War"'s one hour, forty-five minute run, enlightens its' viewers with a biographical and pictorial collage of Mr. McNamara's hectic and universal life in government. Also contained within the fascinating, as well as extremely personal pages of Mr. McNamara's diary, this "Soldier of Fortune" really gets down to business, and isn't gun-shy in the slightest when discussing issues relating to the Cuban Missile Crisis (including Fidel Castro's reign of power [as well as his reign of terror against the United States Government and its' proud citizens]) and the Vietnam War. McNamara also manages to sneak in a poignant and mesmerizing real-life story pertaining to his frienship with the Kennedy family, as well as standing toe-to-toe with President Johnson and his administration. Robert discusses said wars from a business standpoint as well, including a "lesson" in the economic laws of supply and demand. Even with an I.Q. ranging in the 99th percentile (I.Q. of 140 or higher), McNamara concedes that even he has his faults, and acknowledges that no one's perfect by any means imaginable. By looking at this insightfully provocative and candid account, even I don't have to be a genius (of which I'm not, trust me!), to see that a man of Robert S. McNamara's talents and intellect, has any noticable flaws, of which there are extremely few, I'm quite sure. But, don't just take my word for it, just weigh all the merits of this particular "...Fog...", and see your way clear for yourself (either at an art-house cinema locale near you, or on video or DVD in the not-too-distant future) real soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Powerful Errol Morris Film
The Fog of War is basically a well-packaged two hour interview with Robert McNamara, the subject of this feature because of his position of Secretary of Defense under Kennedy and Johnson. It is a captivating glimpse into a man who served in America's most important war of the 20th century (WWII) and helped build its most infamous.

While the subject of this film is clearly McNamara's role in and reflection of Vietnam, filmmaker Errol Morris begins his piece by sculpting the life of the now 85 yr old former wiz-kid. The film traces his role as a strategic analyst for bombing raids against Japan, his short stint as President of Ford Motors and his eventual place alongside Kennedy and Johnson. We also get to see some personal moments about him, such as his claim to be the person who selected Kennedy's gravesite at Arlington. But Morris does not get side-tracked giving us too much irrelevant information; his piece is clear and to the point.

The film attempts to place McNamara in the position of a sage-like wiseman, who near the end of his life can educate the rest of us on the lessons that should be drawn from his successes and failures. Make no mistake, the film clearly attacks the logic behind the Vietnam War (and war in general) and even gives McNamara the chance to pass the buck to Kennedy and Johnson. But I find a refreshing attempt at truthfulness in this film that is usually lacking from most political texts aimed at persuasion.

While I disagree with many of the conclusions the film wants its audience to embrace, I can't deny the skill of the filmmaker who has given the world a piece of history that should be cherished forever. Nothing is more historically relevant than to hear tapes of McNamara's conversations with Kennedy and Johnson, two strong-willed men whose fearless determination is noticeably absent from the leaders of their political party today.

It is impossible for me to review any political documentary in 2004 without comparing it to this era's most famous documentarian, Micheal Moore. Errol Morris's The Fog of War is what I consider a true documentary (a claim I cannot make about Moore's works). His film attempts to display the truth of the situation he sees, rather than the tricky way Moore tries to shape the world to fit his views. Moore could learn a lot by viewing the powerful works of Errol Morris. The two men get to the same conclusion about war, but Morris does have to resort to half-truths and outright lies to prove his point. Compared to true documentaries like this, Moore's works are shown to be what they really are: entertainment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth watching with the noted reservations
The Fog of War has received rave reviews on Amazon.com, but this review will not add to that long list. Fog is the word most appropriate for McNamara's discussion of Viet Nam. After two hours of hit and miss questions and answers, we are left with the conclusion that Viet Nam was a mistake and that McNamara was not responsible for it; that honor goes, according to McNamara, to Lyndon Johnson.

McNamara was a statistician/accountant who understood the numbers, but he was not a leader who could translate his knowledge into forceful action. Instead, it appears as if he supported Lyndon Johnson long after he realized that Viet Nam was going to be a war we could not win. Additionally, the information that he received about Viet Nam was sometimes innacurate and misleading. In hindsight he knows that it is unsafe to trust as fact reports given by subordinates. Without a historical perspective with which to judge the data he received, he arrived at false conclusions which resulted in the deaths of 58,000 Americans and millions of Vietnamese.

Not only was McNamara ignorant of history, but he also understood little about ethics. He concludes that it is morally acceptable to do evil in order to arrive at a greater good. Machiavelli, in The Prince, would certainly agree with McNamara, but The Prince should not be a handbook for American foreign policy, even though recently it appears that Machiavelli's recommendations are alive and well in American government today. Torturing and abusing Vietnamese and Iraqi prisoners may provide useful information, but few would argue that the evil of torture is justified by what we learn from it. McNamara would have done well to study Kant's Categorical Imperative. If we approve of torture, or firebombing in the example given by McNamara, we must recommend that all other nations follow our example, at least according to Kant's Imperative.

My guess is that McNamara is a much smarter man than appears to be the case in The Fog of War. Unfortuntely, the director made McNamara appear to be often confused about the facts which were his stock in trade. He is an old man reminiscing about his life in public service and his memory is conveniently selective and self-serving.

Even so, I can recommend this film with the reservations noted for this reason. No viewer will ever think again that our safety and well being as a nation depend on rationality. McNamara prided himself on being a logical man of reason and often he was. That did not stop us, according to his own testimony, of coming an eyeblink away from the apocalyse during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Luck was on our side then. After watching The Fog of War many viewers will ask: When will our luck run out? This is a question well worth asking. Hopefully some will answer that we must replace evil intentions and actions toward other countries with moral behavior that stands as an example for the world to follow. This imperative puts us on the right if not always the winning side.

4-0 out of 5 stars valuable retrospective of the decisions of war
In his own words Robert Strange McNamara tells of his early life and his career, notably his service as Secretary of Defense under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Through his narrative, viewers obtain a unique retrospective on critical international events, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the bombing of Japan and the Vietnam War.

McNamara sticks to the history. His personality is revealed by the way he speaks about events he found moving, but he dodges the tough personal questions, such as those about his family, his responsibility and his sense of guilt.

Clearly a reflective man, the lessons he provides are worthy of consideration by all, not just government leaders. In seeing some of the same mistakes made in current foreign relations as those McNamara recounts, viewers recognize the cycle of history, and human falliability. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Hapkido DVD Self-Defense Instruction!
This is a great 3 DVD set on Korean Hapkido Self-Defense techniques. With over 3 hours of instruction I was amazed at the amount of material covered in each of the 3 Volumes. Hapkido Master Steve Sexton is a very impressive expert who defintely knows his stuff. His teaching style is easy to understaand and my friends and I were able to pick up the techniques very quickly while watching the DVDs. As a professional bouncer Master Sexton definetly talks from experience as to what Hapkido techniques work in life or death self-defense situations. There is no BS and the techniques are all hard core and explosive. If you want effective self-defense against every type of street attack then this a steal. Having purchased other tapes on Hapkido and various other martial arts this is by far the best in content and value. The production quality is high and with over 3 hours of Hapkido lessons this 3 DVD set definetly gives the best value for your buck! ... Read more
