If you want a slower workout, the "modified basic" routine on this DVD gives you the basics. I recommend this video without reservation, yet you should always try to take Pilates lessons from a certified instructor, so you can glean the full benefits from the method, from this DVD, or from any other DVD. Classical Pilates has the best example of Pilates done well. This DVD shows the full range of exercise levels.
The buildup from Beginner to Advanced is appropriate (I did the Ana Caban (Giaim) beginning and intermediate Pilates DVDs to compare) -- but,WARNING you should probably have taken a beginners Pilates class or done at least one other Beginner Pilates DVD several times before diving into this one. The other reviews are correct, this is a technical DVD with little review of the basics of Pilates, so to start with this one would have been confusing and probably very frustrating. The "Super Advanced" section provides a worthwhile goal, when I am feeling uninspired I look at/attempt those excercises. If you can do the Advanced workout all the way through with correct pace, breathing, and form I would say you would be in very (very) admirable shape.
Anyway, my PT said I should take Pilates. I was willing to try anything to help my aching back. This video starts off slowly, which was really important. After practicing the pre-basic workout for several weeks, I went on to the full basic workout. This was invigorating and it moves quickly. Now I'm practicing intermediate. All in all, this video has helped me fully recover. I recommend this product to my friends and work associates. Thank you for making this video!
I play tennis, ski, and surf. I just enjoy being physically active, and I like to practice sports that involve discipline and skill. The same applies to body conditioning. Pilates is not easy. It demands concentration, strength, and creativity to do it well. I appreciate this DVD isn't a watered-down version of Pilates that underestimates my ability. So I'm learning, having fun, and staying in good shape. ... Read more

There is a wide range of work outs for them to use and the instruction is expertly done. Prior to recommending it to my students, I watched this DVD and did some research on the instructor's background. Both were impressive (she was trained and certified by Romana Kryzanowska.) As others have pointed out, Pilates is not a "weight loss" method in and of itself, but was developed to help develop "core" strength and flexibility. It is used extensively in physical rehabilitation; in other words if you are out of shape or have an injury the general nature of Pilates is designed to be helpful to get you back into shape with less stress on your body than other forms of exercise. To me it accurately and faithfully represents what Joseph Pilates developed. This DVD additionally provides three levels of instruction (Beginner, Intermediate and Advance) with the proper Pilates modifications for each level so you will be able to use it for a long, long time even as you progress and get back into shape. The notes on the DVD state it "is the perfect complement to any weight-loss program" and instructor reiterates this on the DVD - Pilates will be one aspect in helping you get into shape and other changes in your lifestyle, such as diet, may be needed. There is never a magic bullet that will make you lose weight. While there are also other physical activities you can engage in trying to get in shape, Pilates is one that is worth considering based on how and why it was originally developed. And if you already know that you would like to make Pilates part of your activity, then this DVD is perfect.
As a professional Pilates instructor with 20 years' of experience teaching the method, I feel strongly that people represent Joseph Pilates' work accurately.

I am a fan of Classical Pilates because their work shows ultimate respect for remaining true to Joseph Pilates' workouts and philosophy. I purchased this comprehensive 3 hour 2-DVD Reformer video from Classical Pilates (before it was available on Amazon) and it definitely goes beyond all expectations by expertly demonstrating workouts with beautiful strength and articulation. Classical Pilates brings it all together with some of the best Pilates professionals in the business today. There are two distinct basic Reformer workouts on this video, which is very instructive, because they show how you can start the method differently from the very beginning. These two basic Reformer workouts also show how different types of skills can be accomplished with the same exercises. Then on to intermediate level, advanced level, and even super advanced level. There is also a phenomenal exposition of archival exercises that I have never seen. The camera work is wonderful in this Reformer video. You really feel the movement of the demonstrators as you watch it. And it feels great!
This Reformer video opened my eyes, and my mind, about the classical approach to Pilates. The exercises are precise and they flow energetically from one to another without interruption. The practitioners execute their routines with wonderful movement qualities. After seeing this video, I wanted to learn more. So I decided to study with someone who trained in this tradition. The experience has been great! I'm thankful that I found this video. It has enlightened me about the Pilates method, and I use the master teacher's verbal cues to improve my workouts.
I'm happy to have 'graduated' from using the small home "Performer" that I bought on QVC, to getting a full studio Reformer. I was so inspired by this DVD that I decided to take private lessons from a certified Pilates instructor. Using this piece of Pilates equipment literally changed my body and improved my strength. Now I alternate between doing a Pilates mat workout 2-3 times each week, and practicing on the Reformer. This is a fabulous combination. This is a 3 hour 2-DVD set. Although I will never, ever, get to advanced and super advanced routines, these are splendid to watch. Pilates, I see now, can go on forever!
Since I'm an instructor, I have searched the market for available videos on Joseph Pilates method. This equipment video is head and shoulders above the others. Honestly, I wish everyone would work out on Pilates equipment, in addition to the mat. I know, I know, Pilates can be expensive. But I feel that it's better to invest in your health and well-being than to pay for doctors and medication if you let your health deteriorate. I recommend for everyone to "Get Pilates!" ... What a pleasant surprise! I use this video regularly and definitely feel and see the results. Michelle Dozios clearly explains and demonstrates every move but is never condescending, irritating or intrusive. She also shows modifications for beginners and advanced exercisers, plus demonstrations of what NOT to do. I'm not a Pilates expert, but I've seen some of these positions before on other Pilates videos, so I'm guessing they're pretty standard. You'll really feel it in your abs. (I think that overall, Pilates is much more effective -- and interesting -- than crunches for toning abs. I know I see a big difference when I do this video regularly.) This is purely Pilates. There's no cardio, no weights. I like to alternate this video with cardio and weight work; additionally, you can skip the ab section on your other videos and use this instead. This is a great intro to Pilates, and you sure can't beat the price. I highly recommend it.

What this DVD is is a solid introduction to the beginning and intermediate levels of Pilates. There is an introduction about 10 minutes long that explains the significance of and the proper position for the powerhouse and spinal alignment. The instructor, Michelle, takes the time to teach the proper method of breathing during the exercises. After the introduction, there are two groups of exercises at the beginning and intermediate levels. The beginning group of exercises has 18 basic Pilates exercises. It looks like the intermediate group has about the same number. The strength of this DVD is that each exercise is demonstrated in a detailed fashion along with easier and more challenging variations. You should have little ambiguity performing the exercise correctly after listening to the explanation and seeing the exercise performed. In addition, common problems encountered performing each exercise are shown in an exaggerated fashion, so you clearly understand what not to do. I had read two highly recommended books on Pilates, but seeing the DVD really put it all together for me. After using the DVD 3 times this week, I am feeling muscles I haven't felt in years and have developed a sense of when I am not standing properly or slumped over at the desk. I did have a low grade lower backache for a couple of days (which is somewhat normal according to the books) but that has passed. I recently also joined a health club where they offer free Pilates Mat workouts. After watching one session and working out one session at the health club, it clear how much better the instructor on the DVD is. Finally, for me, this workout would not work on VHS format. I really enjoy the ability to step through the exercises rather than FFW or REV.

She mentioned that at the different levels there are changes to the various poses that make them more difficult as you learn and progress and showed me a book on Pilates (from a real Pilates instructor, in fact Karen, the instructor on this DVD, is mentioned in this book as a "real" Pilates instructor). No matter what level, there are certain things that are used in many routines, but they are changed and modified throughout the DVD, and the longer routines have more exercises. The basic and beginner levels have about 10 routines that run 5-15 minutes and consist of around 4-6 exercises. The Intermediate, Intermediate/Advance & Challenging Levels have around 25 routines, that run 5-30 minutes and consist of around 10-20 exercises. (Do not let the shorter times fool you, if you do the exercises properly you can feel their effects. The shorter routines are also good for when you are short on time or not feeling "up" for longer routines.) The biggest thing to be careful of is watching and learning. There is a principal and caution description on the main screen, and an Introduction at each level as well. If you do watch these, it will make the great instruction and workouts even better for you and you will fall in love with this like I did.
There are many levels (I am still at the basic/beginner levels, and trying the intermediate levels sometimes) and times of the routines so I am able to choose different things on different days. The best part for me is that the lessons and workouts are seperate. Other DVDs I have tried had too much chatter in the workouts. Here you watch a lesson/introduction for each level and the instructor introduces new poses and modifications for different poses so you know what to expect. If you do not watch the introductions for each level, then you will miss out on instruction and how do do the exercises. You really need to watch them before trying things, the modifications for the routines are in there and not in the routines themselves. Also as you increase in levels there are more options and routines to work with. So as you start there not be as quite of a range of selection as later on. There are 5 levels and the first 2 levels have about 6 -7 routines in total, but later on each level has about 8 routines or so. But even the lower levels has more than the other DVDs I have tried. As others have noted she may not smile during workouts, instead she is giving me valuable lessons and she does have alot of energy as she guides you through the workouts. If you prefer the tapes with more "filler" and "fluff" then you may not like this. If you want to learn and get a good workout, then this is for you.
The first time I used it I just selected a workout, but when there was no instruction on how to do everything, I went back and watched the intro stuff. Don't bypass the section on how to use the DVD. I went back and did the principles at the Beginner and Intermediate levels a couple times and decided to start with the Intermediate workouts. The first dozen times or so I had to pause the DVD a few times to get into the next position, but once I learned more, I can now do the routines through and the pace is good. It really moves but not too fast to keep up with. ... Read more

Following the cardio workout, you move to the floor for more traditional Pilates matwork. Ellen begins with The Hundred and continues with moves from the classic Pilates stomach series. However, she also adds her own twists to many of the Pilates exercises as well as suggests easier modifications. Most of this section is performed while lying on your back, but there are a few exercises done from stomach down, kneeling, and seated positions (none of the Pilates side kick series exercises are included). This entire section went by very quickly, and at the same time, my core felt challenged by only a few of the movements. Ellen is a likeable, friendly instructor who provides good form pointers, but she frequently fails to adequately cue new movements, which makes it initially difficult to learn some of the moves. The workout is performed on the standard Crunch set with a room full of about 10 participants. In addition to the background music, there is a live drummer on set; some other reviewers didn't like the drummer, but I found him to be an interesting, non-distracting element. Overall, this is a nice workout for those who enjoy blended routines and who are looking for some fresh twists on the traditional Pilates exercises.

Classical Pilates shows good fundamentals of using the magic circle, and then they demonstrate a solid beginning workout. After that, they take you into a realm where only the most highly trained classical instructors can demonstrate effectively: a beautiful intermediate level and an advanced level that is superbly executed. As if all of these workouts were not enough, there is something called the Reformer Mat workout. I had never heard of this before. If you go on vacation and don't have your Reformer with you, you can practice all the Reformer exercises on the Mat! This workout is a sight to behold. The woman who performs this workout is so beautiful, strong, and pleasant in her demeanor, that she makes Pilates look like a sheer joy to do! I have been telling all my friends and family about this DVD because it adds new interesting dimensions to regular Pilates mat exercises. If you get this DVD, you will want to tell your friends! One last thing: the man that narrates the workouts coaches you with this really cool accent. I don't know where he is from, but his words and voice make me understand the Pilates exercises in ways I never dreamed of before. His voice lulls me into deeper wisdom about the Pilates method every time I listen to the DVD.
The magic circle makes me feel my muscles more in the center of my body, the area that Pilates people call the Powerhouse. And you must keep your mind focused and completely 'present.' You don't have time to think about anything else, which is good! In this multitasking world, it feels like such a rare and satisfying experience just to be completely involved in what you are doing in the moment. And time flys right by! Woooosh! You're done! And you had fun! There's also an extraordinary workout at the end of this DVD called the Reformer Mat Workout. This workout seems to be the final frontier of Pilates mat exercise routines. It is a awesome challenge for the mind and body, and I will be working on it for many years to come.
This DVD has basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. Afterward, there is a beautiful creature showing something called "Reformer on the Mat Workout." It's fantastic to watch! And I've incorporated some of these exercises into my mat routine. I'm really happy with this DVD!
At the beginning, the magic circle is not easy to work with. As you gradually learn the exercises, you start having fun. And you feel the difference! I felt Pilates mat exercises much better, much deeper in my muscles than before. The magic circle somehow makes exercises NEW by making your muscles work differently. You connect with the powerhouse directly! After the magic circle exercise routines, there is something called the Reformer Mat Workout. The entire section is beyond my current ability, but I can do many of the exercises pretty well. These exercises definitely spice up my Pilates mat sessions. My new motto is "Wake up, hit the mat, then live it up!"
The magic circle Pilates workout is simultaneously gentle and physically challenging. It's also mentally interesting and keeps my attention. I don't get bored, which is very gratifying! Sometimes I workout on the treadmill, but it definitely does not challenge my mind. I can space out and watch TV or listen to music on the treadmill. But with Pilates, my mind and body must try to coordinate all the intriguing movements and goals to improving the movements. I bought this video because it was recommened by a friend, and because of the reviews on Amazon.com. For $19.95 you cannot have a better Pilates training guide, unless you hire a teacher to come to your home. Thank you for making this video. ... Read more

Description The DVD features the Pilates Beginning Mat Workout, plus a bonus workout and interview with instructor Ana Caban. Reviews (194)
I've since moved onto the Intermediate workout and I agree with the poster who said this one is a lot harder. Be warned! Make sure you can do EVERY stretch before moving on. I made the mistake of moving onto the intermediate workout before I'd mastered the open leg rocker and teaser. I kind of thought I would be doing different stretches than the ones in the beginner workout. Wrong! Not knowing how to do those specific stretches made the 2nd video a lot harder than it should have been. 3 months after starting it I'm finally getting to the point where I can do the stretches without to much difficulty. I'm giving myself another few months before moving onto the advanced workout just to be safe.
Maybe that's because a lot of days I don't have time to make it to the gym but I want to do some kind of exercise. At 20 minutes, the workout on this video is a very convenient length for those days. I can fit it in almost anytime, but I definitely finish it feeling like I've gotten a workout. This video can be the difference between feeling lazy and flabby and feeling alert and motivated at the end of the day. Ana Caban's instructions are clear and complete, and while her delivery of the introductory "this is great and you'll love it" section is a little annoying, during the exercises themselves she's not at all grating. Compared to most exercise-video instructors she's appealingly low-key.
