5-0 out of 5 stars Documenting The Real Thing
This DVD is an unapologetic documentary of Joseph Pilates' original mat workout series with superb demonstration of exercises, and expert verbal instruction by Bob Liekens. The workouts move quickly without stopping so that your heart gets pumping and your muscles start working. This is precisely the point: The Pilates method is supposed to be vigorous as you gain familiarity with the exercises. Learning Pilates is sort of like learning a language. You start slowly at first then you pick up the pace then interact with your new 'movement vocabulary.'

If you want a slower workout, the "modified basic" routine on this DVD gives you the basics. I recommend this video without reservation, yet you should always try to take Pilates lessons from a certified instructor, so you can glean the full benefits from the method, from this DVD, or from any other DVD.

Classical Pilates has the best example of Pilates done well. This DVD shows the full range of exercise levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 10 Star Video!
I have been working out in the Pilates method for several years and take private lessons only once in a while. I live far from certified instructors who have extensive training, so I have to rely on mat classes and video instruction. When I heard about this Classical Pilates video, the recommendation seemed too good to be true, but I bought it anyway. This video is so pleasurable to watch because the demonstrators are precise, focused, dynamic, and fluid. This video is also thorough enough to be considered as a 'visual encyclopedia.' I have never seen another video that exhibits every level! Other Pilates videos charge about the same price, however, they only supply a single workout. The point is that I can grow with this video, and learn from Bob Liekens' insightful instruction, as if I were taking lessons in a New York City studio. Another thing I'm very satisfied with is that I actually get a workout! Many other videos show so many flashy camera angles, and explain the movements in so much detail, that I don't sweat. Classical Pilates claims to preserve the original Pilates method in their video. Since I do not know very much about the Pilates method, I can't adequately comment on this. But I have heard that Joseph Pilates was a tough guy and all around athlete who put his clients "through their paces," and he would encourage people to workout intelligently with robust energy. From watching other students and instructors practice the Pilates method, I can see that Classical Pilates technique is flawless, so I am inclined to believe that Classical Pilates keeps the true flame of Joseph Pilates' tradition burning brightly for the rest of us. I am very impressed

4-0 out of 5 stars Hurts so Good
This DVD is a little dry, nothing fancy here, but it is a great - no, excellent - Pilates workout.

The buildup from Beginner to Advanced is appropriate (I did the Ana Caban (Giaim) beginning and intermediate Pilates DVDs to compare) -- but,WARNING you should probably have taken a beginners Pilates class or done at least one other Beginner Pilates DVD several times before diving into this one. The other reviews are correct, this is a technical DVD with little review of the basics of Pilates, so to start with this one would have been confusing and probably very frustrating.

The "Super Advanced" section provides a worthwhile goal, when I am feeling uninspired I look at/attempt those excercises.

If you can do the Advanced workout all the way through with correct pace, breathing, and form I would say you would be in very (very) admirable shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conditioning & Healing
In addition to physical therapy, Pilates lessons and this video helped me recover from a back injury that stopped me in my tracks. Sometimes I lift heavy boxes as part of my job. One day I wasn't paying close attention. All of a sudden I felt a snap in my lower back. I could hardly stand upright; it hurt to stand up, sit down, even roll over in bed when I was sleeping. I couldn't exercise for several weeks.

Anyway, my PT said I should take Pilates. I was willing to try anything to help my aching back. This video starts off slowly, which was really important. After practicing the pre-basic workout for several weeks, I went on to the full basic workout. This was invigorating and it moves quickly. Now I'm practicing intermediate.

All in all, this video has helped me fully recover. I recommend this product to my friends and work associates. Thank you for making this video!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Like The Style
The guiding ideas of this program seem to be: It's a workout. Do it well. Look good!

I play tennis, ski, and surf. I just enjoy being physically active, and I like to practice sports that involve discipline and skill. The same applies to body conditioning. Pilates is not easy. It demands concentration, strength, and creativity to do it well. I appreciate this DVD isn't a watered-down version of Pilates that underestimates my ability. So I'm learning, having fun, and staying in good shape. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Pilates buy
This is the best pilates tool anyone could own. I am overweight and looking to lose weight, and after I started exercising regularly, I wanted to add both Pilates and balance ball exercises to my routine. After searching for a LONG time to find a great dvd, I found this one. It has been such a rewarding dvd for so many reasons, and I have already lost weight in combining this dvd and others in my routine. This dvd has three sections for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels. The great thing is that each section has 5 workouts ranging from 10 minutes to 90 minutes, and you can choose a program with or without a warm-up. The instructor is great and each move is done a good amount of times. There is nice music in the background as well. What I also find to be truly invaluable in this dvd is the fact that during the workout the instructor will remind you to breathe properly, just in case you forget, and she also tells you how many are left during each exercise. I can write forever about how GREAT this dvd is, but I don't like reading long reviews myself so I wont make you! Just know that this is the #1 DVD for Pilates students at any level, from novice to advanced, and I LOVE IT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended For my Students-Taught By A Certified Instructor
I am a Pilates instructor and recommend this to my students who come to class looking to get in shape and lose weight.

There is a wide range of work outs for them to use and the instruction is expertly done. Prior to recommending it to my students, I watched this DVD and did some research on the instructor's background. Both were impressive (she was trained and certified by Romana Kryzanowska.)

As others have pointed out, Pilates is not a "weight loss" method in and of itself, but was developed to help develop "core" strength and flexibility. It is used extensively in physical rehabilitation; in other words if you are out of shape or have an injury the general nature of Pilates is designed to be helpful to get you back into shape with less stress on your body than other forms of exercise. To me it accurately and faithfully represents what Joseph Pilates developed.

This DVD additionally provides three levels of instruction (Beginner, Intermediate and Advance) with the proper Pilates modifications for each level so you will be able to use it for a long, long time even as you progress and get back into shape.

The notes on the DVD state it "is the perfect complement to any weight-loss program" and instructor reiterates this on the DVD - Pilates will be one aspect in helping you get into shape and other changes in your lifestyle, such as diet, may be needed. There is never a magic bullet that will make you lose weight.

While there are also other physical activities you can engage in trying to get in shape, Pilates is one that is worth considering based on how and why it was originally developed. And if you already know that you would like to make Pilates part of your activity, then this DVD is perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starting to See My Abs Again
After having 2 kids and years of sleeplessness, I thought my abs were a thing of the past. A friend let me borrow this DVD and I love it. It lets me work on what I need to work on, and also fits into my busy schedule when I have time to myself. I looked in the mirror the other day (after using the DVD for 2 months) and I am starting to see my abs again. Follow what the intructor says in terms of exercising properly and other suggestions and I am sure this will help you too.

2-0 out of 5 stars Discouraged
The models and the sets look good, but here's the situation: Joseph Pilates would NEVER describe his method as a weight loss strategy. Mr. Piates was an amazingly intelligent man with incomparable integrity. The Pilates method is a wholistic approach to mental, physical, and spiritual health. The method was NEVER intended to provide a quick way to lose weight.

As a professional Pilates instructor with 20 years' of experience teaching the method, I feel strongly that people represent Joseph Pilates' work accurately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not JUST for weight loss
If you're completely new to Pilates, it's perfect for you. If you're experienced in it, this may not be the best choice of a DVD. This was the 4th Pilates program I bought and it's better then all 3 of the others combined. The instruction is detailed and separate from the actual exercise sessions. There are several sessions of different lengths and focusing on different areas (legs, upper body) at each of the 3 levels. As you get to the harder levels they start going faster but it's not too fast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great pilates workout
I recommend this dvd for anyone that wants to tone their whole body. The instructor is fun, she is full of positive energy and is constantly encouraging you to keep up the good work. This dvd has a great total body workout. The dvd has five 10 minute segments. These segments consist of: abs, buns and thighs, body sculpt, total body burn, and pilates for flexiblity. I really enjoy this workout and have seen results.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Favorites!
This is a great DVD - Each of the 5 segments is fantastic. I love that you can customize your own work out. You can feel your muscels stretching and toning at the same time. Lara Hudson is so graceful and instructs so well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Effective!
I found this video to be very effective.I've had it now for almost a week and after the first 3 days I could already feel my abs and core getting stronger.I, personally, am concentrating on separate routines at a time, but I do squeeze in that incredible flexibility set which is great for relaxing.I feel so good for finally buying a pilates video...especially this one.I couldn't have done any better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners or Anyone
I really have enjoyed this DVD, she is easy to understand and her intructions and constant body check reminders are great! I have about 20 pounds to lose so there are one or two individual moves I can't do yet, but I will eventually. This whole 10 minute series is GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This has become one of my most used DVDs.I like all the segments, and love being able to tack on the ab segment to a weight workout which has trad abwork (yuck..).But my fave segment is the pilates stretch for flexibility. It is yummy.I tack it on to practically everything, except yoga. Most weight workouts have abysmal stretching, and this 10 minute segment covers the whole body and leaves you feeling really relaxed and opened.Love it!Hope she comes out with more workouts soon..... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Short and too Quick
I found this Dvd to be not particularly helpful. It is divided into 3 separate trimester workouts, each of which is only about 10 minutes long. A 10 minute work out is not of much use to me. In addition, I thought the instructor went too quickly through each exercise, without much instruction on what to focus on. I enjoyed using a Pilates for Pregnancy book instead. I get a 30 minute work out using my book and I find it easier to read the instructions than to watch someone else zipping through the exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS DVD!
I just had my baby, and I used Prenatal Pilates from my 4th month on. To be honest, I thought it would be too easy. I am so glad I stuck with it! The bigger I got, the harder it was. It saved my back in my 3rd trimester. I have been told my labor was really short for a first pregnancy. I just gave it to my pregnant sister-in-law because she knew how much I loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is the best
I got this as a gift and used in during all 3 trimesters. It truly helped me stay in shape during my pregnancy. Even now, a few weeks after delivery, I can tell that I'm in better shape than I was after my first child was born(when I hadn't used this excercis video then). I recommend it highly!!

2-0 out of 5 stars No menu
I only watched this DVD once! The video is split up into three sections. One for first, second and third trimesters. You are only supposed to watch the section that is designed for your stage in pregnancy for obvious saftey reasons. Mine did not have a menu. I had to watch the entire thing if I wanted to watch the third section. Who has time for that? I also would not recommend it for anyone who is just begining exercise. It was a waste of $25!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Pregnancy
I'm so glad I found this video. It definitely helped make me more comfortable during my pregnancy, especially my back. The instructor takes care to modify the exercises for pregnancy and divided the video for each trimester. Great if you're a pilates fan or just need a safe way to exercise while you're pregnant. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Beyond
Classic Pilates sets the standard by which I see all other Pilates DVDs. As a certified instructor, I know that Joseph Pilates created a very clear and organized exercise system. He also wrote books that established a philosophy of health to give his exercise system even more substance.

I am a fan of Classical Pilates because their work shows ultimate respect for remaining true to Joseph Pilates' workouts and philosophy. I purchased this comprehensive 3 hour 2-DVD Reformer video from Classical Pilates (before it was available on Amazon) and it definitely goes beyond all expectations by expertly demonstrating workouts with beautiful strength and articulation. Classical Pilates brings it all together with some of the best Pilates professionals in the business today.

There are two distinct basic Reformer workouts on this video, which is very instructive, because they show how you can start the method differently from the very beginning. These two basic Reformer workouts also show how different types of skills can be accomplished with the same exercises. Then on to intermediate level, advanced level, and even super advanced level. There is also a phenomenal exposition of archival exercises that I have never seen.

The camera work is wonderful in this Reformer video. You really feel the movement of the demonstrators as you watch it. And it feels great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
As an instructor, I highly recommend this Classical Pilates DVD for beginning through advanced clients. Understanding the flow and order of the exercises in each Reformer workout, as well as the nuances involved in performing the exercises correctly, can take years to comprehend. Classical Pilates' DVDs illustrate these points clearly and succinctly. The section of archival exercises is more of an exhibition than a workout, but it is the crowning glory of the method and this DVD. Congratulations to Classical Pilates for a spectacular presentation of the original Pilates method of body conditioning.

5-0 out of 5 stars For All Students & Teachers
I've studied the Pilates method for a few years, and became certified through the Stott training program. After going to a couple of Pilates conventions, where people from different schools attend, someone suggested that I buy this Classical Pilates video. I had heard of the classical style or classical approach, but I didn't know much about it. Stott Pilates is good, but we learn different exercises and different movement speeds compared to this video.

This Reformer video opened my eyes, and my mind, about the classical approach to Pilates. The exercises are precise and they flow energetically from one to another without interruption. The practitioners execute their routines with wonderful movement qualities. After seeing this video, I wanted to learn more. So I decided to study with someone who trained in this tradition. The experience has been great!

I'm thankful that I found this video. It has enlightened me about the Pilates method, and I use the master teacher's verbal cues to improve my workouts.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Authentic Pilates
If you are looking for authentic Pilates with seriously beautiful and skillful practitioners, as well as solid instruction, this DVD is for you.

I'm happy to have 'graduated' from using the small home "Performer" that I bought on QVC, to getting a full studio Reformer. I was so inspired by this DVD that I decided to take private lessons from a certified Pilates instructor. Using this piece of Pilates equipment literally changed my body and improved my strength.

Now I alternate between doing a Pilates mat workout 2-3 times each week, and practicing on the Reformer. This is a fabulous combination.

This is a 3 hour 2-DVD set. Although I will never, ever, get to advanced and super advanced routines, these are splendid to watch. Pilates, I see now, can go on forever!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilates Equipment Is Great
This DVD shows exercise routines on the Pilates Reformer exercise machine. Although Pilates mat exercise routines are a great way to stay in shape, Joseph Pilates invented equipment that gives you his total philosophy of health. By using Pilates equipment WITH the mat floor exercises, your flexibility and strength increase in many ways.

Since I'm an instructor, I have searched the market for available videos on Joseph Pilates method. This equipment video is head and shoulders above the others. Honestly, I wish everyone would work out on Pilates equipment, in addition to the mat. I know, I know, Pilates can be expensive. But I feel that it's better to invest in your health and well-being than to pay for doctors and medication if you let your health deteriorate.

I recommend for everyone to "Get Pilates!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soothing and Strenuous
This is the best pregnancy workout I've tried yet. So many of them have you working on your back or doing other things that are dangerous for moms to be. The main instructor is great and the video is easy to follow and very soothing.
The other thing that's great about this one is that the modifications for different trimesters are done by the three instructors throughout the video- so you can use it from the moment you find out you're pregnant until delivery- and you don't have to fast forward to the trimester your in- it's all right there throughout.
I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a great workout that's SAFE!

1-0 out of 5 stars poor work, instructor is too inexperienced
this is a poor quality exercise video; i was hoping the prenatal activity would be better, but its hard to do with the inconsistent instruction from the teacher, who is nice, but she doesn't exude much confidence and doesn't seem very polished at being in front of the camera, which makes a video workout hard to follow...I'd recommend Fitmama or something else, this is not very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very little challenge for women who are active pre-pregnancy
This workout has some great stretching but was not a challenge for someone who is newly pregnant and already active. I was looking for something that would make me sweat or really tone muscles enough that I could feel a difference.

I would recommend this workout for women in their third trimester or women who did not workout before pregnancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for stretching, toning muscles, safe prenatal exercise
This is the second pregnancy dvd that I've ordered, and it is by far the best. If you're looking for an aerobic workout, you won't get one here. What you will get is a yoga, pilates, mild weight session that really helps to stretch and strengthen muscles and feel more in tune with your body. I found it helpful to have 3 models to follow, one doing more strenuous stretches for the 1st and 2nd trimester folks and the other two doing modifications of the same stretches for 3rd trimester. I have personally found yoga to be boring, but this tape moves quickly enough to keep my interest and incoporate pilates moves to make it go quickly and be relaxing at the same time. Of course, you will need to "invest" in some equipment to get the most from the workout; you'll need a stool or chair, 2 2lb. weights, a small ball, and a pole about 4 ft. high for some of the stretches. Sometimes I find that I really need to watch the screen to follow Jennifer Gianni's instructions. Unfortunately, she does not mirror what you are doing (she says, "stretch to the right" and she does, but it looks as though she's stretching to the left from my perspective), but I believe that in time I'll get used to the workout and won't have to depend so much on visual prompts. Overall, I am happy that I spent the money on this dvd. I will probably keep on watching after my delivery. This exercise, combined with a brisk daily walk and some other areobic activities make me feel as though I'll be ready when it's time for labor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good video for stretching, strengthening, relaxation
Before pregnancy, I did yoga regularly, but I had never done pilates, so I can't compare this video to other pilates options, prenatal or otherwise. I can say that I feel good after a session with this video - more flexible, relaxed. My back, in particular, seems to benefit. The exercises are varied, with some yoga, some pilates, some light weights (upper body only), and stretches. It is good to know in advance that some "props" are used in the video - a stool, a wooden dowel (I use a mop handle), 2-pound weights, and a yoga mat if you like to use one. They also recommend a ball and a blanket, but I don't find those necessary. Easy to use with the sound off once you have been through the routine a few times. The modifications for 1st and 2nd vs. 3rd trimester seem appropriate, and all are shown simulatenously, so no need to skip around to find your trimester. I watched the intro and "Kegel" exercise portion only once, and skip the relaxation segment at the end, so a session now takes about 50 minutes. The instruction is generally clear, and it is nice to see a real, healthy- and happy-looking pregnant (3rd trimester) woman leading the video. If you are looking for a pregnancy workout video that is very aerobic/high intensity, you might look elsewhere, but for stretching, strengthening, flexibility, relaxation, and overall feeling good, this one is helpful. ... Pilates Workout for Dummies is a 60-minute DVD, ideal for both the first-time and intermediate Pilates exerciser. In the Basic Workout, well-toned instructor Michelle Dozois clearly and patiently presents 18 classic Pilates mat exercises, first demonstrating and explaining, then doing 6 to 10 repetitions. She explains what the Powerhouse is and how to use it, and covers the basics you'll need if you've never done this before (or need to be reminded), offering alignment tips, breathing, and extremely clear instructions for executing each movement. Dozois suggests modifications for making the exercises easier (or, occasionally, more challenging), and includes cautions against common mistakes and reminder tips for doing each exercise effectively. This is a fine first workout for Pilates novices. The Intermediate Workoutconsists of some of the Basic exercises and several new ones, all done at a faster pace and with more challenging instructions. This is a workout you can progress with! --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! What an unexpected surprise!
I saw this video at a local discount store and picked it up on a whim. I didn't expect much, but it was cheap, so I grabbed it.

What a pleasant surprise! I use this video regularly and definitely feel and see the results. Michelle Dozios clearly explains and demonstrates every move but is never condescending, irritating or intrusive. She also shows modifications for beginners and advanced exercisers, plus demonstrations of what NOT to do.

I'm not a Pilates expert, but I've seen some of these positions before on other Pilates videos, so I'm guessing they're pretty standard. You'll really feel it in your abs. (I think that overall, Pilates is much more effective -- and interesting -- than crunches for toning abs. I know I see a big difference when I do this video regularly.)

This is purely Pilates. There's no cardio, no weights. I like to alternate this video with cardio and weight work; additionally, you can skip the ab section on your other videos and use this instead.

This is a great intro to Pilates, and you sure can't beat the price. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Pilates
This DVD has none of the lush production of other Pilates DVDs or tapes that I have seen. The music accompanies rather than inspires or encourages. The studio is Spartan.

What this DVD is is a solid introduction to the beginning and intermediate levels of Pilates. There is an introduction about 10 minutes long that explains the significance of and the proper position for the powerhouse and spinal alignment. The instructor, Michelle, takes the time to teach the proper method of breathing during the exercises.

After the introduction, there are two groups of exercises at the beginning and intermediate levels. The beginning group of exercises has 18 basic Pilates exercises. It looks like the intermediate group has about the same number.

The strength of this DVD is that each exercise is demonstrated in a detailed fashion along with easier and more challenging variations. You should have little ambiguity performing the exercise correctly after listening to the explanation and seeing the exercise performed. In addition, common problems encountered performing each exercise are shown in an exaggerated fashion, so you clearly understand what not to do.

I had read two highly recommended books on Pilates, but seeing the DVD really put it all together for me. After using the DVD 3 times this week, I am feeling muscles I haven't felt in years and have developed a sense of when I am not standing properly or slumped over at the desk. I did have a low grade lower backache for a couple of days (which is somewhat normal according to the books) but that has passed.

I recently also joined a health club where they offer free Pilates Mat workouts. After watching one session and working out one session at the health club, it clear how much better the instructor on the DVD is.

Finally, for me, this workout would not work on VHS format. I really enjoy the ability to step through the exercises rather than FFW or REV.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Pilates Program for Surgery Recovery!
I am a very active person (aerobics, walking, running) who recently underwent bunion surgery. I did not look forward to several weeks off my feet and being generally inactive. I use this program daily to keep myself active, since very few of the exercises require you to be on your feet. There are only a few that require flexing of the foot while bearing weight on the toes, which I don't do yet. This program has been a godsend for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good start for beginners
This DVD gives you a basic workout which is very easy to follow and. despite being very simple, it's quite effective. It's great for people like me, who had no previous knowledge about what Pilates is or how it works. The instructions are very clear and Michelle does a good job encouraging you all along the video. In addition to this, you get more basic or more challenging versions of some of the excercises, and quick tips to avoid some common mistakes that you may unconsciously make. After some sessions, you really get to feel the so-called "Powerhouse". If you're tired of dull gym routines and don't like the en vogue tendency of having big muscles, Pilates (as well as yoga) will really help you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Core" or Naked men do pilates on the garage floor
The DVD has the following menu: Workout; Scene selection; Pilates Principles; outtakes; slide show; and yoga secrets trailer. I bought this video because: (a) (...); (b) I'm interested in pilates; (c) (...) I would be learning some useful exercise at the same time (it's called rationalisation). Two young, well endowed, handsome men, black and white, perform 36 classic pilates exercises in about 40 minutes. The setting is a grungy garage and the men practice on mats placed on a very dirty looking floor - Grunge Pilates! (...). And, the camera stays firmly on the area I wanted to see - that is the core - which is so important in pilates! I can't say the pilates form was exceptional, but both men work hard and they look pretty much like the I look when I practice - you know - a bit shakey. After watching the workout, I viewed the outtakes - a montage of scenes during the making of the video with the boys larking about, suggestively and otherwise. I thought it was funny to watch after viewing the main workout. Fair dues to them both for keeping a (mostly) straight face during the workout. So, there you go. Two naked men doing pilates in a garage, and in a genre almost entirely female, I say more power to them. I may even do the workout one day. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner / starting out
Almost 10 years ago, I got these in video form.As a beginner, who had a total lifestyle change to include my diet, Mrs. Fonda's Personal Trainer series really helped me lose weight, tone up, and be fit. I lost 20 lbs and have kept it off.I also had success after I had my son when I used her videos in combination with a 2 mile run 5 days a week. I also recieved complements on how my body looked, many people would ask me if I was a gymnast!:) Her workouts and fitness philosophy are right on.I highly recommend this series for anyone just starting out. They are easy on the joints, and have three women who demonstrate basic, intermediate, and advanced levels in each workout, as well as lead some of the workouts, so its not all Jane. The workouts really have some great basic moves for learning about the body in toning and stretch. The aerobics get the heart rate up, and the moves are simple. The aerobics section does require a little bit of space, enough to walk about 5 paces in each direction. I've moved up in my fitness level, but I still use this series for toning, stretch and when I just want to burn a few extra calories. I alternate my workouts with other videos like Gilad, Kaehler, and the 8min(ABS/BUNS)etc series, and I recommend these too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A remarkable lady indeed!
[...] If shoppers have something against Jane Fonda and wish not to buy her films or fitness videos that's fine but they should not be publicly allowed to encourage others do to the same.

Yes Miss Fonda made mistakes in the past for which she has profusely apologized on national television and in her biography `My life so far'. But whatever one's feelings, it is impossible to deny this woman's talent, intellect, complexity, dynamism and the contributions she has made (and still continues to make) to our society. Through her humanitarian work, Jane has more than made up for her past mistakes. She is a gifted vital figure, always challenging and dedicated. Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and inspiring women of our time. A truly remarkable lady indeed!

Regarding her fitness videos, buy them without hesitations. I have used all of them except for a couple. They are very safe, beautifully made and if used correctly, extremely efficient. Jane huge range of videos has something for everyone whatever your age and fitness level. Jane is very motivating and a great example that we can stay fit and strong for ever if we look after ourselves. I would recommend Jane's video to anyone wanting to become fit, strong and healthy and stay that way.

Jane Fonda is back with a biography `My life so far' and a new film `Monster in law' with Jennifer Lopez. Welcome back Jane and whishing you all the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workout for day or night
So far, this is my favorite Ravi Singh & Ana DVD. First let me describe it in detail as I know that will help you in deciding whether or not to buy it.It starts with the Tuning in Mantra-Ong Namo GuruDev Namo 3x.Then there is a breath meditation to use " so that nothing will get on your nerves"It is 10 sniffs and 1 exhale.Next are standard kundalini warm-up--spinal grinds and flexes. Then there are the standing exercises such as stretching back and down, side to side; leg to leg; wide angle stretch; crow squat with breath of fire, etc.Sitting down stretches are butterfly stretch; one legged stretch with the bent leg in rock pose(if you have bad knees like I do, you will need to put a pillow behind your bent leg OR don't sit in rock pose.Next is plow pose; cobra pose with wide legs; upward facing bow with breath of fire--this is quite hard as I can not hold upward bow for 2 minutes, which is about how long this exercise is.Instead I do bridge with a block under my tail bone. The last exercise is Sat Kriya. My absolute favorite! Finally there is a relaxation and the Guru Ram Das mantra at the end of class.Overall I love this DVD.What I don't like is the music. The mantra music is by Wah! and is Reggae style.I don't like Reggae music so at that point in the DVD I turn it off and put on my favorite version of Guru Ram Das.Ana looks like she wearing her underwear, but since you do kundalini yoga with your eyes closed,I bearly notice her any more. The DVD is accessible to everyone and I'm glad I got it.Hope this review helps you.Oh by the way, all kundalini classes end with the "Long Time Sun" song.Snatam Kaur recorded a very nice version of this closing song.Sat Nam

5-0 out of 5 stars Feedback on Ravi/Ana DVDs
3 months ago I got the 3 Ravi and Ana DVD's(Warrior Workout, Ultimate Stretch and Navel Power) and they are the most interesting workouts I have ever done.I have had many years of neck and shoulder pains. I had been seeing a chiropractor 2X a week for a month before I read about these tapes and tried them. I tried the Warrior First(probably a mistake)and ended up feeling more tight in my neck and shoulders then I already did.By the time I went to sleep that night though I started feeling really good. I slept like a baby and by the morning I felt better then I have in years.
I canceled a couple of my chiropractor appointments because I felt so good. They kept calling me and I finally went in to show them how good I was doing. I had all the doctors coming in and listening to my story aboutdoing the Kundalini Yoga DVD's They were amazed at how fluid my back really was now. I have been continuing with these DVD's and still maintain more openess and less tension in my neck and shoulders.
I plan to purchase their other DVD's to help me further explore Kundalini Yoga.
Thank you Ravi and Ana for giving me the opportunity to have this experience in my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this DVD
I love this DVD for what it does for my back. I am much stronger in all my back bending poses. My hips feel freeer and I feel like I have found an extra inch in my spine. People have asked me if I've gotten taller! I do this two times a week. This is my Sunday and Wednesday morning ritual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very very very excellent DVD's!
About 1,5 year ago the person I go to for SHIATSU , started to attend Kundalini-yoga-classes in Amsterdam.
He became very, no, extremely enthousiastic and soon he started to teach me a bit at the beginning or end of the shiatsu. And so I started reading about Kundalini and got through him my first Kundalini tape, and soon after I bought the Ravi &Ana Total Tune Up and Yoga Cleanse DVD's.
Now I bought the newest DVD's and I amthrilled with the new workouts!
The Kundalini yoga helped me very much to get out of a very serious depression, to structure and motivate me at the beginning of the day and also to overcome the side-effects of the medication I took.
It also helps me to keep my lower back in shape because a hyper-mobility off my spine causes me severe back-problems when I meet stress.
The Kundalini-fever infected my life in such a positive way that I am gladly spreading the virus under my friends. The excellent DVD-work-outs are so clear and easy to follow, that it's a very nice way to do yoga on your own when you wake up in the morning. ... Read more

Pilates Complete for Everyone is a bargain: about four hours ofPilates instruction and practice, from beginning to advanced levels, more than35 workouts all on one DVD. The workouts are divided first by level (basic, beginning, intermediate, challenging, advanced), then into individual 5- to25-minute workout chunks so that you can fit your Pilates into the busiest day. The10- to 20-minute introductory segments for each level have the most instruction.Certified Pilates instructor and former professional dancer Karen Garcia has animpressively lean, supple, and strong body--a testament to her Pilates practice. The instruction is done by voice-over; Garcia's moving body doesn't talk orsmile. Although Pilates is best learned from an instructor who can give youpersonalized instruction and correct your form, this DVD is the next best thingto having your own trainer, and there's enough variety that you'll never getbored. --Joan Price ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Detail, Many Workouts (At Least 30 I Can See)
This DVD is alot more detailed than others I have watched. I started at the beginner level right off, but in my rush I skipped the introduction and still had fun. Of course then I bounced around the DVD to look at levels and I thought they were the same or similar, until a friend explained a little bit of what to look for.

She mentioned that at the different levels there are changes to the various poses that make them more difficult as you learn and progress and showed me a book on Pilates (from a real Pilates instructor, in fact Karen, the instructor on this DVD, is mentioned in this book as a "real" Pilates instructor). No matter what level, there are certain things that are used in many routines, but they are changed and modified throughout the DVD, and the longer routines have more exercises.

The basic and beginner levels have about 10 routines that run 5-15 minutes and consist of around 4-6 exercises. The Intermediate, Intermediate/Advance & Challenging Levels have around 25 routines, that run 5-30 minutes and consist of around 10-20 exercises. (Do not let the shorter times fool you, if you do the exercises properly you can feel their effects. The shorter routines are also good for when you are short on time or not feeling "up" for longer routines.)

The biggest thing to be careful of is watching and learning. There is a principal and caution description on the main screen, and an Introduction at each level as well. If you do watch these, it will make the great instruction and workouts even better for you and you will fall in love with this like I did.

3-0 out of 5 stars could be better, but still good
This dvd is different than any of the other pilates workouts i have & took some getting used to. it took awhile to get used to watching a prim & proper women demonstrate the moves while another voice tells you to breathe & counts in the background (both of which i find rather annoyting). i got this dvd b/cause it had beginner, intermediate, & advanced pilates all in one; however each section uses the same moves just w/no modifications in the so called advanced section. i would have liked there to have been different moves in each section but do find the dvd to still be effective. i do like the fact that each section has 10, 15, or 20 minute sections & that the intermediate & advanced ones utilize weights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout & Modifications
I had been looking for a good Pilates DVD, and after trying a couple of titles, I tried this one and cannot recommend it enough.

There are many levels (I am still at the basic/beginner levels, and trying the intermediate levels sometimes) and times of the routines so I am able to choose different things on different days.

The best part for me is that the lessons and workouts are seperate. Other DVDs I have tried had too much chatter in the workouts. Here you watch a lesson/introduction for each level and the instructor introduces new poses and modifications for different poses so you know what to expect.

If you do not watch the introductions for each level, then you will miss out on instruction and how do do the exercises. You really need to watch them before trying things, the modifications for the routines are in there and not in the routines themselves.

Also as you increase in levels there are more options and routines to work with. So as you start there not be as quite of a range of selection as later on. There are 5 levels and the first 2 levels have about 6 -7 routines in total, but later on each level has about 8 routines or so. But even the lower levels has more than the other DVDs I have tried.

As others have noted she may not smile during workouts, instead she is giving me valuable lessons and she does have alot of energy as she guides you through the workouts. If you prefer the tapes with more "filler" and "fluff" then you may not like this. If you want to learn and get a good workout, then this is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good instructional information
If you watch Garcia's introductions to the exercises, you gain a lot more than if you dive right in to doing them. She goes through the actual exercises fairly rapidly and without any instruction or tips. There are a large variety of workouts to pick from both in fitness levels (3) and multipe time lengths. If I have 25 minutes, I can do the long one; when I'm pressed for time I do the 8 minute one. My only reason for not rating this a 5 is that she is totally without emotion or enthusiasm for Pilates. You have to be intrigued by Pilates before you do this workout or you might get dismayed by her lack of energy! Jennifer Kries (The Method) has combined her workouts with yoga, which changes the flavor of Pilates, but she has a smiling, happy approach, which I enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best program for learning Pilates properly
I bought this DVD after I read about it in Yoga Journal. I have 2 other Pilates tapes but this one is so much better since it helped me learn Pilates properly and add it into my workouts.

The first time I used it I just selected a workout, but when there was no instruction on how to do everything, I went back and watched the intro stuff. Don't bypass the section on how to use the DVD. I went back and did the principles at the Beginner and Intermediate levels a couple times and decided to start with the Intermediate workouts. The first dozen times or so I had to pause the DVD a few times to get into the next position, but once I learned more, I can now do the routines through and the pace is good. It really moves but not too fast to keep up with. ... Read more

"Calorie burning cardio plus Pilates-based toning," promises this 40-minute Crunch program, which combines Pilates-influenced standing and mat exercises. In the cardio section, instructor Ellen Barrett uses Pilates terminology (e.g. "standing imprint") as she adapts Pilates moves to rather repetitious standing exercises--mostly squats and leg lift variations--which work the core muscles of the abdominals and back as well as legs, thighs, and buttocks. The moves are sometimes slow and rarely "travel," so your heart rate might not stay elevated, although your lower body and core muscles will get a good workout. The toning section consists of Pilates mat exercises which work abs, back, thighs, and buttocks. One exerciser demonstrates easier modifications. The background music is dominated by a lively drummer who keeps the workout upbeat andenthusiastic. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A light cardio routine combined with brief Pilates matwork
Fat-Burning Pilates consists of two separate routines: a 26-minute cardiovascular workout (the "fat-burning" part) followed by 14-minutes of matwork (the "Pilates" part). The cardio section is Pilates-inspired in that instructor Ellen Barrett frequently reminds you to keep your abdominal core area tight, and she also adapts a few traditional Pilates floor exercises to be performed in a standing position. Overall, however, this segment consists of standard, low-impact aerobics moves such as squats, knee lifts, step-touch, and also some ballet-inspired exercises. Although this part of the workout is fast-paced enough to raise your heart rate, given the extended warm-up period (7 minutes) as well the low-intensity nature of the movements, advanced beginner to intermediate exercisers will probably find this to be a light aerobic workout at best. The cardio section concludes with two short sets of Pilates-style pushups.

Following the cardio workout, you move to the floor for more traditional Pilates matwork. Ellen begins with The Hundred and continues with moves from the classic Pilates stomach series. However, she also adds her own twists to many of the Pilates exercises as well as suggests easier modifications. Most of this section is performed while lying on your back, but there are a few exercises done from stomach down, kneeling, and seated positions (none of the Pilates side kick series exercises are included). This entire section went by very quickly, and at the same time, my core felt challenged by only a few of the movements.

Ellen is a likeable, friendly instructor who provides good form pointers, but she frequently fails to adequately cue new movements, which makes it initially difficult to learn some of the moves. The workout is performed on the standard Crunch set with a room full of about 10 participants. In addition to the background music, there is a live drummer on set; some other reviewers didn't like the drummer, but I found him to be an interesting, non-distracting element. Overall, this is a nice workout for those who enjoy blended routines and who are looking for some fresh twists on the traditional Pilates exercises.

3-0 out of 5 stars not heart pumping for me
I am a intermediate exerciser and workout around 4 to 5 hours a week. The moves in this video are fun, interesting, and challenging at times and the video does go by quickly, but it didn't get my heart pumping with it's extremely light aerobic (?) exercises in between the pilates poses. There are a whole lot of pile squats and squats in general and the instructor is clear and motivating. Also the live drummer in the backround also makes it fun and lively but i would not select this workout as one to aerobically challenge myself. It is a light workout with a great amount of toning exercises. Good but not at a fat burning pace unfortunatley!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Kick-butt Workout!!!
This is one hell of a great workout!!! I felt challenged without feeling overwhelmed! It's great for days when I don't feel like getting on my elliptical trainer! The music is awesome and Ellen Barrett rocks!!! I will say that there isn't enough mat time at the end, so I usually supplement with Crunch Pick Your Spot Pilates. Awesome!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars In A Class of Its Own
Since I'm a Pilates fan, I have purchased many DVDs to practice the method. There are a few other videos that show magic circle, but they're way NOT like this DVD.

Classical Pilates shows good fundamentals of using the magic circle, and then they demonstrate a solid beginning workout. After that, they take you into a realm where only the most highly trained classical instructors can demonstrate effectively: a beautiful intermediate level and an advanced level that is superbly executed. As if all of these workouts were not enough, there is something called the Reformer Mat workout. I had never heard of this before. If you go on vacation and don't have your Reformer with you, you can practice all the Reformer exercises on the Mat! This workout is a sight to behold. The woman who performs this workout is so beautiful, strong, and pleasant in her demeanor, that she makes Pilates look like a sheer joy to do!

I have been telling all my friends and family about this DVD because it adds new interesting dimensions to regular Pilates mat exercises. If you get this DVD, you will want to tell your friends!

One last thing: the man that narrates the workouts coaches you with this really cool accent. I don't know where he is from, but his words and voice make me understand the Pilates exercises in ways I never dreamed of before. His voice lulls me into deeper wisdom about the Pilates method every time I listen to the DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic Circle is a Blast!
The magic circle makes Pilates mat exercises fun! I love Pilates but lessons are expensive, so I can't take them regulary. With this DVD you can save a lot of $$$$ in lesson fees, but be aware that using the magic circle looks deceptively easy! The demonstrators are clear and straight forward, so I thought that's fairly easy. Well, it's not! It takes concentration and coordination, two very good things that apply in many other parts of life. But the fact is that everyone can use the magic circle with Pilates mat exercises.

The magic circle makes me feel my muscles more in the center of my body, the area that Pilates people call the Powerhouse. And you must keep your mind focused and completely 'present.' You don't have time to think about anything else, which is good! In this multitasking world, it feels like such a rare and satisfying experience just to be completely involved in what you are doing in the moment. And time flys right by! Woooosh! You're done! And you had fun!

There's also an extraordinary workout at the end of this DVD called the Reformer Mat Workout. This workout seems to be the final frontier of Pilates mat exercise routines. It is a awesome challenge for the mind and body, and I will be working on it for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastc Stuff
I really enjoy the Pilates class at my gym. My instructor sometimes teaches with a magic circle to liven things up. Pilates is a good complement to my cardio workouts and weight trainng. But I'm so busy sometimes that I wish I could workout at home. So I decided to get this DVD. The instruction is great, and the demonstrators are so good it's scary---scary in a good way. I could tell these guys take their work seriously.

This DVD has basic, intermediate, and advanced levels. Afterward, there is a beautiful creature showing something called "Reformer on the Mat Workout." It's fantastic to watch! And I've incorporated some of these exercises into my mat routine.

I'm really happy with this DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Twist On The Mat
I hesitated buying this exercise video because I assumed adding a magic circle to Pilates mat exercises was a marketing angle. But I underestimated this video. There is a lot of substance and style, which made the $19.95 cost worth every penny.

At the beginning, the magic circle is not easy to work with. As you gradually learn the exercises, you start having fun. And you feel the difference! I felt Pilates mat exercises much better, much deeper in my muscles than before. The magic circle somehow makes exercises NEW by making your muscles work differently. You connect with the powerhouse directly!

After the magic circle exercise routines, there is something called the Reformer Mat Workout. The entire section is beyond my current ability, but I can do many of the exercises pretty well. These exercises definitely spice up my Pilates mat sessions. My new motto is "Wake up, hit the mat, then live it up!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling Better Than Ever
I have always kept in moderately good shape all my life with swimming, walking, aerobics, tennis, and golf. Yet as time goes on (I'm in my 50s) I find it's very helpful to gain deeper muscular strength in such a way that I also increase flexibility. I wish knew about Pilates 30 years ago. But there's good news: it's never too late to start Pilates. Since I bought Classical Pilates other DVD, I thought I would give this one a try.

The magic circle Pilates workout is simultaneously gentle and physically challenging. It's also mentally interesting and keeps my attention. I don't get bored, which is very gratifying! Sometimes I workout on the treadmill, but it definitely does not challenge my mind. I can space out and watch TV or listen to music on the treadmill. But with Pilates, my mind and body must try to coordinate all the intriguing movements and goals to improving the movements.

I bought this video because it was recommened by a friend, and because of the reviews on Amazon.com. For $19.95 you cannot have a better Pilates training guide, unless you hire a teacher to come to your home.

Thank you for making this video. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, if a little distracting
Ms. Garcia is a fine teacher. However, I have to ask why she wears so very little on this DVD. I find that her beautiful body, covered only by bra and shorts, distracts me hugely when I am trying to follow her exercise instructions. She is a very fine looking woman, and if she wants us to listen to what she has to say, then she needs to cover up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
I am very new to both Pilates and the Stability Ball, and I think this is a great workout for beginners. It's challenging enough that you won't quickly master all the moves or get bored with a too-simple, monotonous routine; but yet it's not so difficult that you're discouraged. It's easy to feel how you're improving - in both strength and flexibility - with every session.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific pilates ball workout
i m new to pilates and the ball. i find this dvd great for me. i m going to lose the had-two-babies weight and gain back my muscle. this video is getting me on my way. garcia, the instructor, is very clear and the video really flows. the exercises start with the easiest position and then quickly follows with the more challenging position. for me the best thing is how fun it is to work with the ball (vs. the mat) and the flow of instruction.

the dvd offers more options than the video--you can turn off the instructors commentary and work with just the music at your own pace(kick it up a notch). also there is a bonus workout.

i m really enjoying the workout and only wish this particular instructor did an intermediate workout.

3-0 out of 5 stars Relaxing, invigorating workout for beginners
This is a gentle, stretching core workout. I have been using the stability ball for quite some time, but I didn't think this workout pushed my limits. I would suggest it for a beginner, and anyone looking for gentle, stretching and pilates-based moves. The instructor is good, and explains breathing techniques which assist each move. I did break a light sweat doing this, and definitely increased my heart rate, but I think this workout would be best in conjunction with cardio. Most of the focus is on the core, and I would have liked to see some arms/chest/shoulders included.
The music is soothing and matches the pace of the workout. I'd do this workout again after an aerobic session, but on the whole it is not challenging enough. ... Read more

Description

Pilates is a full-body conditioning exercise program that uses a series of machines and exercises. It works the entire body, both the right and left sides, in unison. It focuses primarily on what Joseph Pilates called the "powerhouse," the group of muscles that begins two inches above and below your navel, then wraps completely around your front and back--kind of like a corset. It also includes your buttocks.

The DVD features the Pilates Beginning Mat Workout, plus a bonus workout and interview with instructor Ana Caban. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workout!
I've been doing Pilates for 5 months now and I love Anna's videos! The beginner mat workout is perfect for anyone who hasn't worked out before. I started doing them to get rid of a little belly chub I had left after having my daughter. Within two months I'd already lost over 5 lbs and I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight, a happy 111 lbs! I was absolutely floored at how easy and fast it was to loose the weight and get my body back into shape especially after having a baby. Something I'd been warned was almost impossible to do.

I've since moved onto the Intermediate workout and I agree with the poster who said this one is a lot harder. Be warned! Make sure you can do EVERY stretch before moving on. I made the mistake of moving onto the intermediate workout before I'd mastered the open leg rocker and teaser. I kind of thought I would be doing different stretches than the ones in the beginner workout. Wrong! Not knowing how to do those specific stretches made the 2nd video a lot harder than it should have been. 3 months after starting it I'm finally getting to the point where I can do the stretches without to much difficulty. I'm giving myself another few months before moving onto the advanced workout just to be safe.

5-0 out of 5 stars clear and challenging
I love this video. I wouldn't base my entire exercise regimen around one video, and this is not a cardiovascular workout, but Pilates is a wonderful way to strengthen and improve flexibility, which in turn can help you be able to do more challenging workouts of other kinds. Ana Caban quotes Joseph Pilates that you'll feel better after 10 sessions, but I really think I already feel better.

Maybe that's because a lot of days I don't have time to make it to the gym but I want to do some kind of exercise. At 20 minutes, the workout on this video is a very convenient length for those days. I can fit it in almost anytime, but I definitely finish it feeling like I've gotten a workout. This video can be the difference between feeling lazy and flabby and feeling alert and motivated at the end of the day.

Ana Caban's instructions are clear and complete, and while her delivery of the introductory "this is great and you'll love it" section is a little annoying, during the exercises themselves she's not at all grating. Compared to most exercise-video instructors she's appealingly low-key.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I think Ana Caban does a wonderful job instructing as well as cuing. I do this workout 3x a week and I actually look forward to the workout!! Her workouts are better and more challenging than the ones I was doing on my own! Right now, I'm still working on the beginners VHS, however, I'm looking forward to the intermediate workout.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST pilates workout avaliable!
I've had this workout for about a year and have bought MANY other pilates workouts and I always come back to this one. I was amazed after I first started using it--I could actually see definition in my abs and thighs and I've NEVER had definition. I used to have backpain everyday, but since I've been doing this program I haven't suffered a single day from a bad back. The great thing is you don't have to jump around and get sweaty, this entire workout is done either sitting or layin
