5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD at an excellent price
I find this DVD to be an invaluable resource. It has more than four hours of various sections and details. It is perfect for beginners because it doesn't "dumb-down" the art of Tai Chi and gives an incredible overview. Tai Chi was originally a martial art and is now practiced mainly for health and relaxation. Without the martial essence the Spirit is lost, the postures have no meaning, and the mind loses its focus during practice.

This is the real thing, on a DVD with amazing navigation. Every single movement, posture and technique has its own chapter marker which makes it possible for anyone to study the form carefully and learn authentic Tai Chi quickly.

The depth of the content is impressive, while the presentation is simple and relaxing. I especially love the music during the program and the breathing instructions during the form..

There really is enough to practice on this DVD for years, rather than many of the Tai Chi videos out there where you see someone on the beach going through the motions, which you'll only ever watch once or twice. It is very difficult to find anyone who even knows the original 108 Posture Classical form, nevermind a teacher who performs it so beautifully and gives us so much insight.

1-0 out of 5 stars A reference video, not for the beginner
This is really more an encyclopedia article than a learning video. Note also this video comes from a fighting art viewpoint; no relieve-stress-on-the-beach scenes here. As reference it goes into MUCH detail, but for beginners this is too tedious a place to start. All the moves are shown from about the same angle; new learners usually need more help than that and will find this video frustrating in that respect. If you already know the form, are looking for more historical background or are coming from another martial art you will find a lot of data. So it all depends on your goals - to learn the form look elsewhere, this is way overpriced. But if you already know the form and are looking for details, you may find it interesting. Either way though its a bit pricey for what you get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Tai Chi Video Ever
The DVD edition of this Yang style Tai Chi video is so amazing. It is organized in a very simple and scholarly way, but the teaching inside is very deep and thorough.

It starts right at the very basics for beginners and gives you an excellent overview of the art of Tai Chi. The setting is a formal training studio. The video contains all the things you would learn in a Tai Chi Class from the basic stances and fundamental postures, to the entire form instructed and performed in complete detail by Dr. Yang.

There is an enhanced content button you can click on at any time to get the detailed analysis and instruction of every one of the movements. He even demonstrates some Chin Na grappling hidden in the postures of the form.

Not only is the entire thing subtitled, which is really helpful, but there are additional content subtitles, between the narration, in case you're interested in knowing more. It is over four hours long, including an excerpt of a Tai Chi Theory lecture by Dr. Yang, where he clearly explains the roots of Taiji Philosophy and Tai Chi as a martial art. This lecture alone makes the DVD worth getting.

There are also additional sections which explain Taiji Qigong (Chi Kung) internal energy training, and Taiji Fa Jin, which is the 'emission of internal power.'

The music is beautiful Classical Chinese and suits Master Yang nicely. I see this DVD as a very important document for transmitting the true essence of Taiji, both in its Classical form, and as a living, modern art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
This is definitely a great DVD but it's not for beginners. The concepts he explains and the way the forms & other sequences are filmed will not do you much good unless you're already familiar with tai chi / kung fu. The picture quality leaves much to be desired and it's obvious that this was poorly remastered from a VHS tape. However, there is a wealth of information here and it's really worth the price. All of Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming's products are worth seeking out for the enthusiast or serious student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well done
I've seen a number of other videos offering instruction in various styles of martial arts and Tai Chi specifically. This one stands above them all for the quality of the production and the way the DVD is put together.

There is a great wealth of information on this DVD. There is a short lecture on theory, a number of loosening up and warming up exercises, Taiji Qigong exercises, and of course the full Yang style long form. Everything has chapter stops and you can skip to the section you want quickly and easily from the DVD menu.

The long form doesn't dwell excessively on any individual movement which allows you to practice along with it, but if you want more detail on how a movement is performed, you can hit 'Enter' on your DVD remote when the yin yang symbol is on the screen to get in depth instruction on the current movement being demonstrated. In that way it manages to offer the best of both worlds.

The only small criticism I have is the way the camera angle would switch sometimes during the course of a movement. It was done to provide the best view of the movement I'm sure, but the specific directions each movement travels in are not clear. A small nit to pick no doubt and probably of no concern to a beginner anyway. All in all this DVD stands well above any other Tai Chi instructional video I've seen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Tai Chi
As someone coming new to Tai Chi I wanted a medium which would allow me to easily repeat a particular section until I become comfortable with it. This DVD meets that requirement and more. I have found Paul Lam's explanations to be very thorough and free from jargon, and I am sure that after a few weeks I will start to derive some real benefits.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best way to get into tai-chi (besides live instruction)
This program enables anyone interested in learning tai-chi off to an enjoyable start. This video/dvd version by Dr. Paul Lam shows the 24 forms in different perspectives - including the full form facing you as well as back to you, which is very considerate for the absolute beginner which these videos are geared towards (I previously bought a video by another teacher which supposedly is geared to beginners as well but I didn't appreciate the version because the instructor faces the viewer leaving you to move in the opposite direction then does the complete form in silouhette lighting this video by Dr. Lam is much more considerate in that manner).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instructional Video of the Standardised 24 forms
It is an excellent 2 hours instructional video of the standardised 24 forms. All the instructors are of high level, and explanations are very clear. The tape has 3 parts. The first part teaches 6 Qigong exercises. The second part teaches the 7 most important/difficult movements of the form. The third is a detailed instruction of all the 24 movements. Each movement is split in several parts and it is shown from different angles. At the end of the video, there is a complete demonstration of the 24 forms from the front and from the back views. There are instructions how to use the video for learning efficiently the 24 forms. However, it isn't enough for the absolute beginner. The video assumes that the viewer has a previous training either from a teacher or from al least one of other basic videos of Dr. Lam (eg. Tai chi for older adults, Tai Chi for Health).

5-0 out of 5 stars Go to the Head of the Class!
This is truly a marvelous video especially to be used as a study guide between classes. I used it in conjunction with a weekly class on the 24 Form with an instructor. I quickly went from novice to the head of the class. Now, when the instructor tells the students, "I know the class is crowded, but, if you cannot see me, watch Pat". I feel very proud. I could not have done it without Dr. Lam. Get this tape. It is an inexpensive way to Tai Chi stardom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lam-- professional, standard Yang short form
Dr. Lam and some of his assistants in this DVD have won medals in China in Tai Chi competition. This reflects their standardness and conformity to the Yang style. If you want the standard stuff, and are not willing to settle for watered-down, careless, or altered versions, this is it. This will show you the Yang Short Form as true to its original developers. I have not had any instruction in karate or any martial art, but was able to follow the individual form presentations fine without having to go to the final demonstration.
I believe that much thought and care was put into the development of the forms to the end of maximizing the benefits to the flow of Chi in different parts of the body, with the attendant health benefits. Departing from or altering the forms could cut across the gains to be had from this. So I say be as standard as possible to reap the full benefits of Tai Chi.
I looked at several other Tai Chi DVDs. Some of them were at a lower level than the Yang Short Form. One of them was at a higher level-- showing 48 forms. The Yang Short Form was developed with the idea of having a set of forms that pretty much the whole population of China could do on a daily basis. The intention was to cut down on health care costs by promoting the preventative health care benefits of Tai Chi. So they needed high participation, and they couldn't make it difficult to learn. They also couldn't have it take much time. It takes only 4 - 6 minutes. Leading practitioners of Tai Chi were given the job of sifting through the larger body of Tai Chi forms and practices to come up with a set of exercise forms that would maximize health benefits in a short period of time. I respect the product of this work, and wanted to stay as close to it as possible. If you think this may be too much for you to start with, ask yourself "Do I think I can understand and apply as well as 80% of the Chinese population?" You probably can. If you think so, don't start out with a lower level "beginning" DVD. As far as a higher level, you can go on to that once you have this down. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Introduction to Tai Chi
"...because he is alive to difficulty. That is why he meets with no difficulty." ~Lao Tzu

Firstly this workout DVD has so many features it was quite amazing. If you are new to Tai Chi this is a perfect place to start. The music is soothing and exotic, the scenery is beautiful and the instructor's voice is calming.

Secondly, I could actually do the workout on the first try. Tai Chi looks difficult when it is done too quickly. On many other DVDs I felt that I could not learn the moves fast enough so I gave up. Scott Cole moves at a perfect pace.

Scott Cole focuses on guiding you through Tai Chi postures and training techniques. He blends martial and healing arts in order to empower you and motivate you to move in a healing direction. He was named one of the Top 5 Fitness Instructors in the world and has appeared in over 300 publications worldwide.

DVD Contents:

1. Play Features - Plays all the features

2. Chapter Selections - Pushing the Wave, Beautiful Woman Turns Her Waist, Grounded Chi Journey in Hawaii, Parting Horses Mane

3. Special Features - Postures with Narration, Postures With Music, Workbook Slideshow, Hawaii Workout to Music.

4. Audio Features - Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1

The benefits of this DVD are immediately apparent:

Renewed Strength
Upper Body Warming - blood flow definitely increases in the upper body.
Increased Flexibility
Increase in Energy and Confidence

This Tai Chi workout is the best I've ever tried. It was easy to learn the exercises and I also had a few great laughs because, well, some of the postures and movements are rather funny the first time you do them.

Once you have learned the moves you can then try the workouts with just music. Once you have memorized the workouts you may find yourself wanting to do the exercises outside. The exercise routines can be done almost anywhere and you need very little space to do them indoors at home.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay introduction for absoulte beginners...
however, you have to listen to a lot of New Age blabber. If you don't have much time to spend, have never done Tai Chi before, and you need a workout that is not too physically demanding, scott Cole's program really will fill the bill. However, this is not the traditional short form and the individual positions are performed differently by Cole (though they are easier to do) than by traditional Tai Chi teachers. Paul Lam's Tai Chi - The 24 Forms is a much better place to start if you've had some Tai Chi background or you want to learn according to the traditional style. Lam's DVD is detailed and precise, and includes 6 Qigong exercises as well. Personally, I found Cole's DVD a good springboard to get back into Tai Chi, but probably won't view it again now that I've stumbled across Paul Lam. Lam (a medical doctor) also has Tai Chi programs for people with diabetes, arthritis, folks who are over 50, and for absoulte beginners who need an easier introduction. But most of all, no New Age mental clutter to distract you from the beauty of the Tai Chi movements.

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Tai Chi
I have been doing Tai Chi in my home in front of the TV now for about 8 weeks. Scott Cole presents the material in an easy to digest way and keeps it light and interesting. I own this disc and the AM/PM workout disc. This disc is a little more advanced than the AM/PM workout disc in my opinion, but it doesn't move too fast. I would recommend the AM/PM disc if you haven't studied any martial arts before. I think that the postures in the AM/PM disc are a little easier to do than the moves on this disc.

That said, I think this disc is also appropriate for a beginner. The disc presents an introductory workout that gets the juices flowing. The disc menu is organized to help you do the workout, but also to get additional help on the postures. All of the moves are available from the postures menu. This is a good feature in my opinion - you can review any posture you are having problems with.

Overall I really like the disc. One complaint that I do have is that the default audio is stereo. The default should be Dolby digital 5.1. The DVD player and TV can convert that signal to stereo so why make that the default mode? Anyway, enjoy.

Cheers,

Chris

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for begining
The start of the DVD, where you have to go through all the company's crud that made the DVD, is really really annoying. Scott is fairly easy to follow, but I'm still not all the way through the DVD. I wish he went into some stretches, and how you're supposed to breathe and all a bit more; he goes a bit fast, sometimes. Which may seem a strange complaint, given he's moving in slooooow motion, but this is the very first time I've ever tried this stuff; I'm not just in it to learn the forms, I'm in a remote area and have no other way to learn this stuff. I guess I was hoping for a bit more of an introduction to Tai Chi; but if you already have a bit of experience in yoga or martial arts, and just want to learn & practice with the basic forms, this is a good DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Instruction
This is my first encounter with Tai Chi and I found Scott very easy to follow. I am now waiting to receive the AM/PM DVD's. I will make this a part of my life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning Tool!!
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a great alternative or supplement to their formal instruction in T'ai Chi. Bill Douglas' teaching approach makes learning and appreciating this wonderful internal martial art fun. I wish I had stumbled across this many many years ago, as I had always been interested in T'ai Chi, but good instructors are difficult to find in my area.

Anthology of T'ai Chi & Qigong: The Prescription for the Future
has been my answer and when you read the book, and also watch the DVD or Video as an additional supplement, it is obvious the time and effort and professionalism that has gone into the making of this production.

My life has been enriched by this book. As the material teaches, T'ai Chi is a lifelong learning process and, for me, this has been great place to start. Many, many thanks to Bill Douglas for sharing his experience with the rest of us!

1-0 out of 5 stars Insulting Series
I have not read this book.
It is not the content that I'm one staring. (neologizing permitted?) I will not read any book that implies that I'm an idiot. Of course I won't read those books for people that can't speak either. Now the question is; Is it elitism, or do I have some modicum self-esteem? Enquiring minds anyone?

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what we need
I'm a big fan of Bill Douglas's work. When I began looking into Tai Chi, I first picked up Bill's Book and thought it was great. It explained things in very simple terms and defined the ideas very well. I've been mostly working on my Tai Chi alone do to my crazy schedule & lifestyle and its is difficult at best. As soon as I saw this DVD set I grabbed it right up and it has reinvigorated my playing. Bill has single handily opened the doors of Tai Chi to millions around the globe and we are all in great debt to him. I couldn't be happier with this DVD, or recommend it with more enthusasum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best in it's Field! Perfect for Beginners & Refining Moves
I practice outside, so don't use the DVD daily, but sure is nice to review and refine movements or check out the next movement whenever I feel ready to! Have tried other styles on VHS, but this version and the way it is presented, is MUCH easier to pick up, and very relaxing. Still have a way to go, but now I can improve on movements and correct breathing by reviewing even the earlier lessons. Our instructors say, "It took the Chinese 400 years to develop T'ai Chi, so we have plenty of time to get it right." Always thought I'd like to learn T'ai Chi,
THANKS Bill! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for Stress Relief!!
The New Forest Tai Chi for Beginners Video is a great stress relief tool, and who couldn't use that? As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) I see many people who are searching for tools to help them manage the stress in their lives and to help them achieve some sense of internal balance. This video provides excellent training in using movement to achieve those goals. Bright-Fey's approach is easy to learn and easily fits into even the busiest schedule. No prior experience is necessary - this video is appropriate for all ages and all levels of physical ability. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Forest T'ai Chi for Everyone
The New Forest T'ai Chi video for beginners is an excellent way to experience the benefits of a well-designed program of exercise which relieves stress, loosens joints and improves balance.

After taking two (one twelve week and one eight week) sessions with John and Kim Bright-Fey, I realized the video would encourage me to continue an exercise regimen at home. I have been so pleased with the video because it accurately reflects their teachings and techniques and motivates me to do the exercises and routines in between the personal sessions. The routines are easy to learn and fun to do!! By the way, I am a 72-year-old female with a precious husband who has Parkinson's. Talk about stress!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Workout Without Pain and Pretzel Twisting
Like many people, I have tried all kinds of yoga only to discover that pain and soreness outweigh any "relaxing" benefits. Then I discovered New Forest Tai Chi. This video provides what I've been looking for for years--a simple movement routine that relaxes and boosts energy without tying me up in knots. Far from the manic energy I'd feel sometimes from aerobics (ugh) or power yoga, playing New Forest Tai Chi makes me feel truly relaxed and revitalized for the rest of the day. I was surprised at first because the videotape seems so simple. I'm usually wary of anything for beginners, but the introductory level of the video makes it completely accessible and yet I can tell the benefits are quite advanced.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye
Having played a variety of styles of tai chi with a variety of teachers, I have to say that John Bright-Fey's presentation of tai chi makes this powerful art accessible to anyone and everyone. Although the movements are simple, their performance coupled with a playful attitude can produce amazing results. Although it is a beginners tape, "old pros" could benefit from this tape in that it speaks to the essence of this ancient art that is read to be rediscovere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tai Chi that spoke to me.
This is a great beginnner video. It was simple, the instructor was personable, I felt like I was in the room with him. I was able to do each step, each movement. By the second use of the video, I started to feel I was really getting the hang of it. I could feel the flow in the movement. If he has another tape, I will order it. ... Read more

If you have the VHS tapes he made in 1987 - "David Carradine: T'ai Chi Workout" (ASIN: B00000DGGX or ASIN: 6302817668) and "David Carradine's Kung Fu Workout" (ASIN: 6302702844) - then there is not really anything new here in the workout sections. However, for those who have been waiting for him to put those 1987 workouts on DVD, this is it! They're both here. I really liked his "Shaolin Cardio Kickbox" tape. I haven't seen the "Shaolin Strength Workout" tape yet, but I'll probably get both when he releases them on DVD. Maybe he'll put both Shaolin workouts on the same DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Try It!...You'll Love It!
I work out every day. I vary my workouts between weight training, aerobics, upper and lower body days, some Yoga and some Pilates. I started incorporating this "Tai Chi Workout for Beginners" about 6 weeks ago, and now it is the one I use the most. If I had to choose only one, this would be it! With each session it leaves me feeling strong and rejuvinated, it is a feeling that is almost euphoric that I carry with me long after the workout.

As a total newbie to Tai Chi, I am glad I started with this one and would highly recommend it to others who want to learn from a great instructor.David Carradine, who we all know and love as "Grasshopper" from the Kung Fu TV series, will immediately put you at ease with his soft voice, and expertly and gently guide you through the entire workout.

The program breaks down to five sequences of movements and then on to a meditation sequence that is indescribably wonderful.
First up is about 15 minutes of specific stretching exercises, that will get the blood flowing and the muscles warmed up. If you practice Yoga, you will probably be flexible enough to perform these easily. If you are not as flexible, go slow, there is a lot of twisting and strectching, and the more you practice these, the more flexible you will become. Next up you will learn the Basic Stances of Tai Chi, which also take a bit of practice to get down, then on to some Vital Engery and Fitness exercises in which you will actually feel the stress leaving your body and the engery entering. After that, Indiviual Tai Chi Movements(a master instructor is on hand to demonstrate at this point) are practiced and then it is all put together in Complete Tai Chi Form.

The total workout is a little over an hour, and I will tell you that you are getting quite a workout and won't even realize it. There isn't one part of your body that is missed. It will leave you stress free, toned and more flexible physically and mentally. The meditation sequence as mentioned is also wonderfully calming. Carradine is always encouraging, and makes you feel perfectly fine to go at your own pace.

And there's more..you really get your money's worth on this DVD. You will also find a Kung Fu Session which also includes stretching, stance training, some kicking exercises, combination exercises and the philospophy.

Other features include four songs by Carradine and an interview.
The music is light, refreshing and will help ease you into this gentle but highly effective workout. No special equipment is needed. The class is wearing some sort of jump suits(that looked like something out of the Jetsons) and were wearing sneakers. I usually do the workout in just some comfortable clothing that moves easily, and barefoot on my Yoga sticky mat.

I absolutely loved this workout and the class. It gave me a fabulous introduction to Tai Chi, was a great workout, left me feeling wonderful(and even feeling a little more graceful then before) and wanting to come back for more.

Try it...you'll love it!...Thanks "Grasshopper"

One of the essential principles of t'ai chi is complete relaxation, letting the lower body sink as if rooted into the ground while the upper body floats above. The movements are slow, circular, fluid, and balanced. In T'ai Chi for Health: Yang Long Form, instructor Terence Dunn teaches the complex, 108-posture Long Form with clarity and patience. The format of this 120-minute video is similar to T'ai Chi for Health: Yang Short Form: 7-minute explanation of the qualities, philosophy, and health benefits of t'ai chi; 10-minute breathing and warm-up segment; 20-minute introduction to basic postures; full hour of step-by-step instruction in the 108 postures of the Yang Long Form; and finally a 15-minute Yang Long Form demonstration. Dunn is an excellent instructor, explaining each move in detail and demonstrating with grace, suppleness, and strength. --Joan Price ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Much more bad than good
I ordered this DVD on the basis of some of the reviews - it was a big mistake. While Terry Dunn is very relaxing to listen to and obviously knows his stuff, the quality of the DVD makes its all but useless as a training tool. The DVD does not permit selection of the section I want to perform. The section that introduces you to the basic forms is so washed out that you cannot tell what the foot and hand positions are supposed to be.
Finally, in the last segment where Terry performs the complete form, the camera pans in too often so that you cannot actually see the form from start to finish.
Sadly, I highly recommend you seek another source of knowledge for this wonderful art.I know I will be looking for something better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I purchased this, with much trepidation, based on one person's 5 star review BUT indeed this is a wonderful video. The music is very appropriate and peaceful, the instruction is clear enough for beginners but the instructor's expertise is clear and will provide learning for many, many hours to come, and the instructor is wonderful, no silly jokes that will get annoying, very to the point yet not dry, seems very genuine.I am very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Video
This is the best Tai Chi video on the market.I've been studying martial arts for 16 years and this is the 1st Tai Chi video that i have seen that teaches the correct form move for move.Excellent video for learning this form.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner, but...
This is a reasonably good video for someone who has little or no Tai Chi experience. The instructor does an excellent job of describing the weight shifts, and subtle movements. The video is disappointing for the intermediate student. It is advertised as a demonstration/training video for the Yang LONG form, yet only addresses the first three sections - half of it.I was hoping for a detailed view of sections 4 through 6, which are not addressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall GREAT video!
I would have given this video 5 stars but I do think for an absolute beginner, it is difficult to follow and there are some basic instructions missing. I took Kung Fu for about a year and am used to learning a 30, 40, 50+ step form. What this video is missing is an explaination as to how you should approach your Tai Chi training. If you've taken a martial art, Tai Chi itself or even ball room dancing, this is a great video.

For those who have not take any martial art etc, here is some advise. When you start to learn the form, realize it is going to take A VERY LONG TIME for you to be able to learn the entire form correctly. To start, learn the first 5-8 steps and then turn off the video. Keep practicing until you can do the steps without thinking about them. Go back to the video and do the next 5-8 steps. Then turn off the video and do all the steps you know until you do ALL of them automatically. Keep this up until you learn the whole form. This will take weeks if not months to perfect. It is possible to learn the form in a few days and be automatic in it within a week or two, but you've got to dedicate some serious hours to Tai Chi training.

All in all, a wondeful video that is easy to follow. Just take your time and be patient. Once you learn the form by heart, you can concetrate on the relaxation power of the form and less on remembering the sequence of manuevers. Good Luck!! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much dialogue
I bought this DVD to engage my 92 year old mother in some simple, introductory exercise. I have done Tai Chi in the past and thought she'd enjoy it. Paul Lam's style involves visual example and verbal description, and the older participants he uses were good for her to identify with. However, even on the first viewing the amount of dialogue made it difficult to deal with, left my mother & I standing and waiting impatiently for him to move on to the next pose. Since with DVD you can't fast-forward past the dialogue, it would have been better to demonstrate the moves without so much discussion before going on to putting the sequences together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not all exercisers are 25
I bought this for my mum (aged 66) who has had a knee replacement and also has a bad back and other health issues. She loves it, has even booked to join a pensioners (we call Seniors pensioners in England) class as this gave her confidence to do so, and her flexibility is improving. I don't know about you, but I HATE it when exercise DVDs only show really, really young things (I'm 38) - which I am sure is fine if you are really young. Good quality products like this have a place; the instructor really knows his stuff; the class with him did not intimidate my mum. I say, you go Seniors! Good for you, this is a great DVD and don't listen to people who are churlish simply because they bought something that was not wrong, but wrong for them.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Tai Chi for The Elderly" is more like it
I was so let down by this DVD that I almost gave up on Tai Chi. Why they chose a cast of people that were all over 50 is beyond me. I guess it's to appeal to that demographic. Paul Lam speaks too slowly and the group of seniors (to whom I mean no disrespect) move akwardly, out of sync, and barely stay 'true-to-form'. I would HIGHLY recommend that anyone who can stand up on their two feet at a moment's notice and walk up and down stairs without help should look into Kathy Smith's DVD. For those of you who are finding it hard to gain mobility - this is the DVD for you. I did not mean to offend so forgive me if I've been rude.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step"
Tai Chi for Beginners is an excellent program. Dr. Paul Lam teaches an innovative Step 1-2-3 method to make learning easy and enjoyable. I was able to learn the six beginner forms in one week. Tai Chi is not strenuous, but greatly assists the student to relax and release stress. I would recommend this DVD to anyone who wishes to improve their health without destroying their joints. Dr. Lam's students in this DVD are all in their "Silver Years." However, this training would be enjoyed by all ages. The back ground music adds to the peace and calming effect of the exercise. ... Tai Chi: 6 Forms, 6 Easy Lessons moves at a steady and fluid pace that is accessible to all levels of fitness. The instructor, Dr. Paul Lam, condenses this practice into six lessons, taught with meticulous explanation and repetition. The constant recap of each form aids in creating an approachable and easy-to-follow learning environment. Each routine is added piece by piece, which makes comprehending the overall continuity easy. Although effective in practice, video instruction may not be ideal in theory because Tai Chi lacks the same calming effects when performed in front of the television set. But this method offers such practical and basic instruction that all levels will soon be doing Tai Chi in the atmosphere of their choice. Each of the segments can be put together to form a cohesive and continuous workout or performed separately if participants want to zero in on specific forms. In addition to Tai Chi, the DVD includes a 3-in-1 Qi Gong workout. Qi (or vital life energy) Gong is based on traditional Chinese medicine and acts as a complementary addition to the overall experience. This regimen is ideal for anyone who desires both a mentally and physically focused workout. Participants with compromised backs, joints, and muscles will find a safe and nonaggravating practice that can alleviate tension and increase flexibility and balance. Tai Chi: 6 Forms, 6 Easy Lessons extends a warm invitation to old and young alike with this safe and educational format. --Olivia Voigts ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners!
This is an excellent video for beginners. Dr. Lam gives six essential lessons in Yang style Tai Chi. The moves are presented by Dr. Lam in front and back angles, by his assistant with Dr. Lam commenting on the form and in group form. The moves are repeated several times and are relatively easy to follow for a beginner.

I recommend you get the DVD version if possible. It is so much easier to fast forward or rewind than with a VHS tape. I don't think this video is suitable for intermediate or advanced students and it does not show the complete Yang form, however it is a great introduction for somebody with little or no Tai Chi experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tai Chi - 6 Forms, 6 Easy Lessons (1995)
I have reviewed 17 different Tai Chi tapes for beginners, this is by far the best. Dr. Lam presents the best form I have seen. Many other instructors abbreviate the form and movements, trying to make the learning experience easier for the beginner. I found this very confusing, especially when trying to join other groups. I just didn't know what correct form looked like. While my form is not perfect, everyday it improves with the Dr. Lam tapes. The training is provided through warm ups, class demonstration, individual demonstration, and Dr. Lam points out common mistakes made when learning a form. You are given views from the back, side and front. One after another. Learning Tai Chi can be frustrating. Dr. Lam has made it very easy for me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating and Disappointing
I've been very excited to try Tai Chi for a while now, but found it frustrating and ultimately impossible to watch Dr. Lam's video. Four key reasons why this didn't work for me:

1) The pacing is all wrong. There is not enough time for me to emulate what the instructors are presenting before they move to something else. It also continually shifts from position to position, and I lose track of where I should be starting from and moving to.

2) There is no philosophy taught behind the movements. I wanted to know a bit about the reason for each of the movements and the philosophy of Tai Chi.

3) These are real-life people who have no stage training. Their talking is stilted and disjointed.

4) The production quality is low. The navigational elements are minimal, and the studio set looks like a junior-high production.

Ultimately, I'm now shopping for another DVD that I can actually watch and from which I can learn something.

5-0 out of 5 stars first exercise video i ever wanted to buy
i have no rhythm so i needed this slow, step by step process. i am only on the first lesson, but i can keep up - so i know i will go back tomorrow and try again.
the other videos all went too fast and wanted me to learn too many steps at once. i appreciate how they show the demonstators from the back so i will not have to worry about right and left. that way i can watch while i do the moves and not have too many distractions

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
I got this DVD for my husband, who has been interested in trying Tai Chi for a while. I decided to try it out first, and only managed to get through ten minutes of it. This video is painful, and I do not mean physically. The instruction is very poor, most of the movements are shots of the back of the instructors, and the set is honestly the worst I have ever seen. I agree with another reviewer that it looks like it was shot in a basement. This is the first time I have ever wished I could give a video 0 stars. Don't waste your time or money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful erotic entertainment
This DVD contains beautiful women performing yoga and Tai Chi exercises in the nude, with the lighting, decorations etc giving this a very high-class and artsy feeling. It is obviously not meant to exercise by, which is probably what caused other raters to low-rank it. However, if you enjoy the subtle eroticism of nude women exercising, you will definitely enjoy this 2 hour DVD. The yoga hour shows 3 women in more revealing poses than the Tai Chi hour, which features 5 women. Highly recommended! My wife enjoys watching this DVD, too. If you like this, also consider Totally Nude Aerobics.

1-0 out of 5 stars A simple girly tape
Dark shots of limp girls. Wouldn't really know yoga was involved. Try something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the yoga ?
The girls look like they're sleeping. Although, one stroked the shoulder of the other. It's like Chinese water tourture. Doesn't seem to have much to do with yoga. The colors are washed out and soft. I did enjoy the other offering here on amazon, Nude Yoga and Tai Chi. A much better DVD with real instruction. I rate this sequel a zzzzzz.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disnsapointed, softporn, w/ no health or athletic incentive
As a heterosexual man you can get your rocks off a couple of times to hair spray headed translocated 80's porn chicks and their silicone jugs doing nothing impressive, as well as the dingbat narrating lady's cheap voice, but like any cheap self pleasuring video, it eventually will insult your intelligence

That's about all, which is really dissapointing because the real serious female yogis are the hottest women in the world, I mean that -- and it's sad they can't get someone like Jennifer Kries or just about any experienced yoga women who normally do clothed yoga and make it so it is a total genitalia exposure nude yoga and with the same concise matter-of-fact instructions on how to do yoga right!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
My only introduction to Tai Chi was what I saw in "The Calendar Girls" movie, so I was a rank beginner when I bought this DVD. Because of bad knees, I was unable to do Yoga, so decided to try this out.

Scott is a wonderful teacher and I was able to follow along right from the beginning. I've used the DVD, morning & night, for 4 weeks, and have noticed a great deal of improvement in muscle tone in back, abs and especially the knees. They are stronger and no longer have that annoying tendency to buckle on stairs. I am overweight, btw, and unlike Yoga, this does not present a problem with doing this type of exercise. Hope these comments helps someone make the decision to buy . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I've never done Tai Chi before so I was a little skeptical about how much I would get out of this video. I bought this DVD yesterday and I've done the PM section twice and the AM section once. I felt energized after doing the AM stuff this morning and I am looking forward to doing it again tomorrow morning. The instructor has a very pleasing voice, is great looking, the music is very pleasant and the beach is gorgeous. He explains each movement clearly. I'm also getting a beginner's video so that I can learn more about the philosophy of Tai Chi.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy and Effective
I have taken tai chi at 3 different times in my life from teachers with vastly differing styles. One was quietly meditational, another more dance oriented (he was a ball-room dance instructor) and the last was a martial arts instructor who taught a strict, rigid class that I survived for about 2 months. That was 12 years ago and I havn't done much in the way of exercise since. Now as part of a get-healthy-before-I-die program, I picked up the video cassette of Discover Tai Chi PM.

It was a very nice surprise. I had never heard of Scott Cole but his vital, cheery aproach to Tai Chi was very accessible and easy to follow. He gave an adequate amount of information about the philosohical basics (it is after all an exercise/health tape and not a Taoist teachings video :-} ) and it was incorporated into the exercises them selves. The movements flow nicely and are repeated several times in the introductory segments. They are then tied together into a form of sorts and repeated at the end over some above average New Age meditation music.

Cole is quite energetic, easy going and appears to really enjoy the act of teaching. And he has a pleasant voice that is easy to understand.

Now for the really important information. I feel great every time I do this work out: energized and relaxed at the same time. It was the perfect relaxation tape for this sedentary, moderately stressed out, over weight (but decreasing...finally) 40-something female. It would probably be best to have some familiarity with tai chi, although it is by no means necessary. It was for that reason (my perception that a certain amount of basic knowledge was assumed) and the fact that Sensei is still in my head barking at me to do the form seriously and correctly, that I gave the tape 4 stars. For sheer enjoyment and effectiveness, I'd give it 5.

The DVD format would be great as it is easier to find specific segments and more forgiving of endless replays. ... Read more

The beginning of Tai Chi for Arthritis introduces the arthritic senior-citizen members of Paul Lam's Australian tai chi class, who share their stories of increased range of motion and resulting enjoyment of life thanks to the positive effects of exercise. Lam, a Sydney physician and international tai chi champion, personally vouches for the ancient practice, which reversed the debilitating effects of his own arthritis. Then the class follows an hour-long program of warm-ups, stretches, and 12 movements that increase muscle tone and joint movement for the arthritic. These consist of six basic movements, six more advanced movements, and a separate demonstration by Lam without verbal instruction for those ready for a more fluid daily practice. Lam also introduces a set of qigong exercises for arthritis, explaining that the Chinese believe that the sluggish flow of Qi--the Chinese word for energy--is a major cause of arthritis. --Kimberly Heinrichs ... 1-0 out of 5 stars To many people
The introduction they could have done with out and Dr. Lam has people to help show the movements. Way to much distraction when there are that many people in a video. I didn't learn a thing from it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good excecise but not easy to follow
This is my first Tai Chi video so I have nothing to compare with. Overall, I liked the excercies and I liked how he broke every move into multiple segments to make sure the viewers get it. But his explaination of each move is not very clear and sometimes lacks details. For example, he should point out when a movement requires shifting weight or bending knees. These details are ommitted from time to time. He also needs to incorporate more breathing instructions into the movements. I was able to follow it, but my mom (whom I bought the DVD for) was confused by the instructions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Csongor Daniel's New DVD is an Investment in Yourself
Csongor Daniel's self-directed debut DVD "Energizing T'ai Chi Chi Kung" is a great investment in yourself.Even if you're unfamiliar with this ancient, up-and-coming meditative form of excercise like I was, you'll come away from watching this with the confidence that you can do it too, and that it really is beneficial to your body, mind and spirit in these modern, hectic times. The backdrop to this artful, athletic demonstration flows seamlessly from the edge of the Grand Canyon and the beaches of south Florida to the green of Scotland and the stateliness of Yugoslavia. It's almost like a travelogue for your eyes while you listen to great New Age music and Daniel's competent, soothing voice. Then at the end you realize you got a workout in, too! That's the best kind of educational exercise DVD ~ the kind you're not wishing would be over with the whole darn time.I would recommend "Energizing T'ai Chi Chi Kung" to anyone. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title...
I mistakenly assumed with a title of "DISCOVER Tai Chi" that Mr. Cole was going to teach me the traditional moves of Tai Chi. This DVD appears to be an individual's idea of an aerobics program using Tai Chi moves. I've only been stationed in one place that offered lessons and fell in love with Tai Chi, but only had time to attend for the first few moves. I've read a couple books describing the art, but thought I'd benefit from being shown the moves. This is definitely NOT the aide I was looking for.

This guy is probably a great modern dancer and aerobics instructor, but he races through his moves with little instruction or explanation of what one should be experiencing; proper breathing, stance, muscle concentration etc.

Don't recommend it unless you're bored with your current workout and know Tai Chi well.

5-0 out of 5 stars First one thing and then the other
I found this DVD at the public library and liked it so much that I ordered it for myself. This is a very good workout and it took me a good month before I could do the entire sequence in one session. And Tai Chi, if done in the right mind set, lends a certain clarity to your entire day. I am still amazed that Tai Chi is such a good workout. You can really feel the heat from following Cole's regimen.

An important note though; please take a Tai Chi class, even just one, with an instructor before jumping into the DVD. There are certain things about posture and stance that no DVD can instruct you in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it..
This is a great dvd for the beginner. After doing it a few times, you pick up the moves easily, so it doesn't bore you to death with explanations of how to do the actual moves. So in this aspect, its' great.

I would like a more advanced work out like this, so hopefully the next level will be coming out soon. But there is really nothing else out on the market.

There is the workout to music, once you learn the routine, which I use all the time now.

Great product just wish the next level was available. Scott are you listening?!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Find. Destress and break a sweat!
I love this video. I discovered it at the library and loved it so much that it was overdue for 11 days. The moves are very easy to learn. Had it down for the most part the first time I followed the tape. I felt invigorated, refreshed, and could not believe the workout I got. There are a lot of hand movements, but you are primarily working the thighs. Great for beginners or inconsistent execers
