This read-along presentation of Little Mermaid is designed as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, Disney's full-length feature film. The read-along section features a 14-minute narrated synopsis of the basic story in five languages; each with onscreen words accompanied by still action pictures from the Disney movie and very brief song excerpts. The vocabulary portion introduces words like "mermaid" and "crab" in English, German, French, Italian, or Spanish. Sing-along songs with onscreen lyrics include "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Poor Unfortunate Souls." Children ages 3 and older will enjoy pursuing Sebastian as he hides beneath ever-moving cups in the game section. Music videos "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World" (featuring Jodi Benson) are sure to appeal to preteen audiences and the Search the Web DVD-ROM and Disney preview sections are of interest to all ages. While the Little Mermaid story is scant on drama in this format, this read-along makes reading fun and constitutes a nice accompaniment to the feature film. --Tami Horiuchi ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I Paid Too Much!
Maybe if I had paid $10 instead of $18 I would consider this a better buy. Unfortunetly, I paid too much. My 4 1/2 year old daughter is in LOVE with Ariel, so I bought it and was not real pleased. Neither was she. The find Sebastian game was fun for about 3 minutes (she found him every time) and the story is narrated with still pictures from the video. (maybe a different story about Ariel would have been nice) I do think the foreign language part is cute, although a little tough to understand for a 4 year old. All in all, for $10 it's a decent buy...but no more than $10!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Magic Of The Little Mermaid On Your DVD!
DVD READ-ALONG - THE LITTLE MERMAID is a fantastic thing for the kids and adults. It has the complete story of the Hans Christian Anderson story of The Little Mermaid with all the character voices and a great narration by actor Roy Doltrice (TV's Beauty & The beast) It's all the original cast too. Jodi Benson (Ariel) and Buddy Hacket too!

The menus are cleverly put together and the graphics are fun. The extras include music videos with sing-a-long capabilities and words as well. There is a game that you can find Sebastian and a vocabulary section that everyone can learn foreign words. There are even two rock videos of Kiss the Girl and Jodi Benson herself singing Part Of Your World. That is very good.

The best part for me and the kids is the fact you can listen to this story in six different languages. A very cool feature I wish I had as a kid. Our kids today are going to be smart in several different languages. You should get this. It's fun and musical! (8-15-02) ... Read more

The DVD read-along version of Lilo & Stitch grabs attention withalmost too many cool features to collapse into a manageable bite. For starters, you'll need to find your way around a screenful of flags. Feeling unambitious? Listen and readalong with the English narration, featuring the original movie voices of VingRhames and Tia Carrera. Up for a challenge? Flex your foreign-language muscleswith the Spanish, French, German, or Italian versions. Then you're free tofollow a condensed account of the spunky Hawaiian orphan girl who unknowinglyadopts an alien. Future MTV addicts will want to skip forward to the musicvideos (the A*Teens'"Can't Help Falling in Love" and a children's chorus rendition of "HawaiianRoller Coaster Ride"), while gamers will go for the feature that reinvents the remoteas a joystick. The song section parades lyrics along the screen (take your pickof languages), and the vocabulary area allows for slipping in and out of foreigntongues while learning words like "ohana" (family). Two other options, "Searchthe Web" and "The Magical World of Disney," aren't much more than commercials, but if you like movie trailers, click away. Lilo represents a new, bookletless breed of read-along, but, for technophobes, it's comforting to knowthat its volcano of options isn't about to blow. Sparing yourself a DVD lavabath of bells and whistles is as simple as sidestepping a flag or two. -- Tammy La Gorce ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good DVD!
This disc has a story, 2 songs, 2 music videos, a vocabulary section, a handful of preveiws, a game, and 2 computer web links.
The story is the same as the regular CD read-along, but I think it's funny to hear them speak other languages. There are 2 songs from the movie, "He Mele No Lilo" and "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride", to sing along with. The 2 music videos are the A*Teens "I Can't Help Falling in Love With You" and "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride." The vocabulary section is educational because you can learn beach-related words in 5 languages. (Swimmerifen, ha ha!) The previews are previews, what more can I say. The game isn't very hard, so it will be easy for littler kids. (I, being 12, didn't enjoy it that much.) I can make no comment on the web-links, because I can't do them on my computer. Well, MY favorite part was the sing alongs, and the "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" music video, though there was a preview of a computer game I particularly enjoyed.
All in all, this is good for Lilo & Stitch fans of all ages. (Save the ones that only liked it for the Elvis music)

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney Read-Along DVD's......Great Idea!
I think the Disney Read-Along DVD's are a lot of fun. My 20 month old really enjoys sitting for the short stories. She's to young to sit through an entire movie, but the Read-Along DVD's are just the right length to hold her attention. I ordered these DVD's for Christmas and was somewhat discouraged after reading the reviews of the other parents. So I didn't expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised after watching them. If you are expecting these DVD's to be educational tools you may be disappointed, they're great for fun time. I read to my daughter so I don't need her sitting in front of the TV with a book. Yes, there are Disney promos and it's still animation, but you have the option of NOT watching the Disney trailers. You select what you want to watch from the main menu ie; the story, music videos or vocabulary. I like the music videos with the on screen lyrics. I also think it's interesting to have vocabulary section which gives you words to choose from in either English, German, Spanish, French or Italian. You also have Disney's web access with this DVD using your computer and a DVD game option. My only complaint is since the stories are so short there should be more than 2 or 3 music videos. Otherwise, This is perfect for my toddler, maybe a little boring for older children. Older Children may appreciate the Leap Frog "Letter Factory" and "Word Factory" DVD's my daughter loves them and they are a more educational.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but better with book
My son loves books but finds the read-along DVD uninteresting. I like the fact that it can expose children to other languages, but this will only work if you can get them to watch/listen. Maybe this format would work if kids weren't exposed to high stim TV/Videos. I think it would be much more useful if they included a book the child could reference as the story was told. I know I used to turn the pages of Disney's Cinderella book to follow the movie, and it was great fun. Maybe as my son starts reading more on his own, he will enjoy this more, but I doubt it. I'd pay another $10-15 for a book that went with it in all languages.

4-0 out of 5 stars What I expected
I think people are expecting books with these. My son enjoyed this DVD, even though he's seen the movie, because there are words on the screen. We also liked the vocabulary part of the DVD. Reminds me of the old records that you used to follow along and turn the page when Tinkerbelle's bell sounded, except now it's onscreen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sales gimick
I couldnt see any merrit in this DVD. It was recieved as a gift to my grand daughter. If you've seen the movie, the storybook feature was worthless. Most of the songs included werent even in the movie. The rest of the DVD was advertisements for other Disney movies. Why should I pay to see more advertisements??

5-0 out of 5 stars awsome for all to see

Anybody who struts around with Simba's hard-won authority deserves thisroyal DVD read-along from Disney. Kids can recoil at Uncle Scar's dastardlydeeds en español and discover that "hakuna matata" sounds pretty much thesame in Spanish, French, Italian, or German. And should the dynamic storytellingfail to thrill your 4- to 12-year-old fan, a flurry of other interactive optionsawait. 4-0 out of 5 stars Read along in five languages - great idea
I bought this DVD because it is formatted like a book with words on the screen in five languages. A group of words are shown in bold as they are read. My only complaint is that the words should be highlighted or change colors as they are read. Also, I had some trouble with the speed of the DVD. Initially it was reading fast but when I slowed it down, the words being highlighted did not match when the words are being read.
If the words are in synch and the each word highlighted as it is read, I think it will do a much better of job teaching young children reading.

Anyway, my four year old loved the DVD. He already knows how to speak French and English and the vocabulary section got him interested in other languages too.

The games are also pretty nice...only problem is that you can't choose which game to play. You always have to start from the beginning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hakuna Matata!! Wonderful!
Finally, A Lion King DVD from Disney that has all the songs with the words and some fun games as well. My two year old has learned the words to I Just Cant Wait to Be King, Circle of Life and Hakuna Matata. He has also learned to distinguish various animal tracks from one of the games included. If you are looking for the movie wait for the Special Edition in October, but if your child loves the Lion King and plays the audio tape over and over this is the DVD for you!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth a penny
I thought "Read Along" meant a book - Not. It is a DVD "book" with subtitles on the screen, the characters don't talk or move, it only has a narator's voice and the pages "flip" on the screen. The whole story is over in 5 minutes. Most of the DVD is taken up with ads for other movies, and 3 music videos (Elton John, etc) which children aren't interested in anyway. Should be rated "fast reading adults only" who want a summary of the story at best. ... Read more

For kids who can't get enough of the Toy Story phenomenon, Disneyoffers this read-along DVD as an educational companion to the popular sequel. Itdoesn't serve as a replacement for the full-length feature, however--the storyis boiled down to a more manageable 16 minutes. Words appear along the bottom of the screen in English,French, German, Italian, or Spanish. 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $
I agree with the previous reviewer. I bought this as soon as it was released, and I thought it was the film (the photo and details were not available until it was actually released). After watching it a couple times I am very disappointed. This isn't worth the bother. By the movie and a book. Skip Mitch's bouncing ball!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough fun
I found this DVD a waste of money. I thought that it would include a book for my child to read along with, which it doesnt. It only has one game and my child mastered it early. It also only have one music video, and a poor choice at that. If I could I would of returned this item for a complete refund. But Amazon doesnt take back opened DVD's. This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." 5-0 out of 5 stars Treasure Planet is sure to be a hit!
Treasure Planet is the latest animated feature film from Walt Disney. It is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island", but is set way on the future.

The story is about fifteen-year-old Jim Hawkins, who comes across a map to the greatest pirate trove in the universe. The tale follows Jim's fantastic journey across a parallel universe as a cabin boy aboard a glittering space galleon. Befriended by the ship's charismatic cyborg (part man, cook John Silver, Jim blossoms under his guidance, and shows the makings of a fine spacer as he and the alien crew battle supernovas, black holes and ferocious space storms. But even greater dangers lie ahead when Jim discovers that his trusted friend Sliver is actually a scheming pirate with mutiny in mind.

Although it does look a lot like "Atlantis - The Lost Empire", Treasure Planet is much different than it, because I feel that Atlantis was way too complicated for children to understand the concept and the storyline of the movie, whereas Treasure Planet is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, a famous classic with a simple storyline. With amazing special effects and cgi technology, this movie is sure to put the audience in awe. The voices provided for this movie are from some famous celebrities like Roscoe Lee Browne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and David Hyde Pierce which itself is worth watching for.

All in all, I think Treasure Planet will become a sure hit because of all the reasons above. A must watch!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've seen it 13 times!!!
Action, adveture, the perfect movie. Disney's Treasure Planet is a Wonderful film, one of my top ten, but maybe I'll tell you about that when I review Snow White, if at all. The movie is based on Robert Louis Stevenston's classic novel, I'm sure we've all read it, I have. Jim Hawkins live with his mother while running the Admiral Benbow Inn. Although his sort-of aligned on the wrong tracks, he know how to handle a solar-surfer. One day while coming back from surfing, a ship crash-lands on the dock near the Inn. An ugly turtle-like alien steps out, along with a chest. Being a kind hearted soul, Jim helps him into the Inn. They find out thai his name is Billy Bones, and is trying to hide from pirates. Knowing that he was dying, he gave Jim two things. A treasure map, and a warning to "beware the cyborg". Grabbing the map and his mother, they ran to the back door to escape, not a second too soon, because pirates then raided the Inn, looking for Bones' map. Jim and his mother escaped to they're good friend's house, named Dr. Doppler. (The friend, not the house). After Jim opened the map, they discovered that it led to treasure, the loot of 1,000 Worlds. Eager to see find it, Dr. Doppler & Jim hire a crew, and they set sail. Jim was to give the captain, Captain Amelia, the map for safe keeping. After that, Jim was named Cabin Boy, and was assigned to work with the ship's cook, John Silver. But Jim was terrified to see that he was a cyborg!! But after getting to know him, Jim decided that this couldn't possibly be the one he was told to look out for. They became fast friends, and became very attached to one another. But after accedentally stumbling onto his plot, Jim runs to the captain to warn her. But it was too late. The mutiny had begun. Trying desperately to get to a life boat, Jim loses the map, only to find that Morph, Silver's pet, had changed it's shape to look like it. But fortunately, none of the pirates knew. Knowing that that disaster had taken place, they were now on Treasure Planet, and Jim was to go and find shelter. On the way, they meet up with B.E.N. (Bio-Electronic Navigator) and he offers them his home. He was marooned by the same pirates, with the most famous, Captain Nathaniel Flint. In the middle of the night, Jim, B.E.N., & Morph set out to go back to the ship, dis-arm the laser-cannons, and get the map. Since all but one sly pirate, Scroop, had been left on the ship, they climbed the anchor's chain up to the top. B.E.N. was given the job of dis-connecting the laser-cannons, Morph to distract Scroop, & Jim would go and get the map. But eventually, Morph and Jim ran into each other, so now that Jim has the map, now he has to get rid of Scroop. Fortunately, B.E.N. while trying to find the right plug to puul, pulled the plug on the artificial gravity, so as jim just bearly grabbed the ship's flag as he was floating upward, Scroop passed him, flinging him into space forever. After B.E.N. finally put the gravity plug in, and the laser-cannon plug out, tthey headed back to camp, only to find that Silver had taken Dr. Doppler & Captain Amelia hostage. Forcing Jim to lead them to the treasure, they set off. They finally found it though, and Silver was filling a life boat of treasure. B.E.N. and Jim found something quite interesting, too. Jim found Captain Flint's skelliton, and B.E.N. found his missing memory chip, which Captain Flint had taken away from him, so long ago. When Jim inserted it, B.E.N. remembered about the booby trap, and the whole planet was going to blow!! ... But Jim will always remember his wonderful adventure on Treasure Planet. Well, that's it. I hope this review has helped you and encourages you to get this DVD. P.S. If you like the movie, buy the games.

5-0 out of 5 stars In the top 2 of modern Disney films!
This is up with The Lion King in quality and is modern Disney animation at it's best, unlike the shockingly bad 'Brother Bear'.
Treasure Planet also has real touches from old Disney like Peter Pan, you could see the characters in a line-up with these classic icons.
I went with a group of adults and we ALL found it very funny and yes, I was on the edge of my seat at one point!
I don't understand any criticsm for this - and I' not one of those Disneyoids who likes any Disney film either.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Movie That Makes You Dream
Even if it isn't exactly after the rules of the book, nor gravity, I greatly appreciated this animation movie. The characters were alive and the relationship between old pirate Long John Silver and young lad Jim Hawkins showed what true friendship looks like and that people can change for the better of ways. The soundtrack is also one of the best, the music and the lyrics make you fly off and enter the wonderful world that Disney created to let people dream.

2-0 out of 5 stars What's up with Disney?
Once again Disney disappionts me by making yet another action film to target young boys. And in the proccess making a movie with no heart I could care less about the relationship between that 17 year old and Captian Long John Silver or whatever they called him. Why can't Disney come up with more orginal stuff like Lilo and Stich that movie was halrious! The future for tradional animation is looking darker and darker. Hopefully Home On The Range will brighten things up but not likely. ... Read more
